You can't convert but 32bit systems can run on a 64bit machine, but they'll not recognize all the hardware... Why do you need 32bit anyways?

Presumably because, if it's not new enough to run Vista or 7, 64 bit XP is a terrible curse of biblical proportions, and 64 bit linux is... like normal linux but a little bit more faff. If, for instance, he wants to use any sort of wireless network hardware ever made, going 32 bit is just common sense.

The 32bit OS should run on the 64bit processor, but can you be more specific about the 32bit OS?
killer has a valid point about hardware, if there are no compatible hardware drivers for 32bit OS that hardware ain't going to work.
