Arc Welding Advice?

My father-in-law just gave me this 295 amp arc welding rig (he's forbidden to use it anymore--pacemaker.) It's complete with mask, rods, etc. I've never welded before, and have a couple questions:-- Any good books or tutorials to recommend?-- I live in an older home (1930s), which has bus fuses and certainly can't supply 295 amps without burning out (or down.)Should I get a separate service installed for the garage? Is it expensive? I've looked on the power company website, and it's typical superficial information for the average customer...

Electric Arc Furnace?

I'm trying to make a furnace that can melt metal.  I've done a lot of thinking on it, and I decided that I'm going to make an Electric arc furnace for a multitude of reasons. I plan to use an arc welder as the power supply, with two carbon rods as the electrodes, creating an arc just above the crucible to melt the metal. I was wondering if anyone has done anything like this before?  I plan to have the furnace body made out of firebrick and refractory cement. Would this pose any problems? Also, how much strain does this put on a welder? Will it need to be shut off after a while due to overheating, or can it sustain it's own? Finally, How much power does a typical arc welder use? (in terms of watts)

Arc reactor for girls :)

Hi guys, I hope this is the right place for this! I've been scouring you tube and Instructables for the last hour trying to find an arc reactor build that's small enough for a girl. I'm doing a Pepper Potts/Rescue build of sorts and would definitely feel more comfortable going from a tutorial for the reactor, but the problem is, all the reactor builds out there fairly dwarf me and stick out really, really far. Does anyone know of any smaller reactors? Don't have to be screen accurate, as this if for a Pepper that doesn't really exist, but definitely looking for LED lighting. Thanks!

Plasma Arc Waste Disposal

I was watching the local news earlier... and they started talking about a new waste plant being built in Ft. Pierce, Florida.Basically, they vaporize the trash and sewage sludge under a vacuum, and use the by product gases as fuel for the plant and power turbines. Steam is going to power a local juice plant. Solid by product (rocks and such) can be used for construction etc.On top of that, the by product gas - when burned - is cleaner than burning natural gas or garbage. Even if you think climate change is a myth, I think you can appreciate cleaner air to breath :P This plant is going to eat up the local landfills too :)I just thought it was pretty cool. This is the first plant in the United States and the third in the world (other two are in Japan and are much smaller).Comments?

Using Plasma Arcs to Deal with Trash

"A Florida county plans to build a facility to get rid of their landfills, generate electricity and produce construction material, all using a process called plasma gasification which vaporizes garbage at temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. The $425 million facility expected to be built in St. Lucie County will use plasma arcs to turn garbage into gas and rock-like material. It will be the first municipal plasma waste processing facility in the united states, and the largest in the world. Expected to be completed within 2 years, the 100,000 square food facility will process 3,000 tons of waste per day. Fed not only with waste being produced currently, the facility will also begin to process the waste already in the county landfill. Estimates predict that the entire volume of the existing landfill, 4.3 million tons of trash collected since 1978, will be processed within 18 years."Read More...It almost seems too good to be true, what do you think?

Arc produced orange lightweight gas? Answered

EMERGENCY: I have been arcing through everyday air in an enclosed container.  An orange gas formed at the top and I am not sure what it is.  The container is plastic and has had a small amount of melting in a top part, but very minimally.  My electrodes are aluminum foil layered over a couple times, melting has occurred slightly on the electrodes.   10kv 30mA transformer.

Anyone have a instructions on how to build an electric arc engraver?

I want to build my own electric arc engraver similar to an Actograph or a Martindale. Not prepared to spend $400+ for one. Not the vibrating kind like a Dremel but one that burns into the metal. Had one at a shop I used to work at but I never got around to copying it. I recall that it was fairly simple--a hunk of plywood with a metal plate with ground wire attatched & a heavy duty cork insulated cord with copper tip as the business end. Any info would be appreciated.

how can i build an arc furnace from a microwave ?

Hello after wanting to build a tesla coil, but first reading up on how to make a HV output supply from a microwave transformer, then realising i want an arc furnace to melt pool salt(calcium chloride, or if possible, carbonate) in order to make calcium metal, or calcium carbide, via electrolysis what do i need to do, to build an arc furnance from a microwave transformer? clearly it seems very much able to generate an arc, with a significant amoutn of heat, but i dont know how to safely use it to do what i want. at the moment i already do own a microwave transformer, its fuse clips and all the other junk form the microwave transformer. i also want to know if its possible to melt lead with an arc furnace, as i want to do some lead casting wihtout using expensive propane.

Wiring for cosplay - arc reactor - soldering help?

Iron Man cosplay trouble - my soldering iron won't tin, first off. It worked fine last week. I've tried cleaning, sanding off the dirty parts, using flux... I'm stuck. Also, it's heating the solder enough to melt it, but not the wires enough for it to create any kind of connection. It's a pretty small space that I've got to wire everythig in is pretty tight. I could post pics of the set up / ideas for the actual wiring? I've got 6 white LEDs and 2 3v batteries for power.

What to do with an old 80W lamp? Answered

I came across this 80W lamp a few weeks ago, sitting atop some junk, still in its box I think this is the data for it here I'm not sure if it still works or not, but since it was lying with other junk which worked perfectly fine, I'm gonna say that it probably does still work... Does anyone know of a good use for it? No one else seems to want it, I listed it as free on an online ad site for my area but got no replies, and I'm not sure if it's safe to just dump it into the general waste bin. Thanks

is there a way to make an ac arc using a disposable camera? Answered

I am currently searching for a way to mod a disposable camera so it will make an ac current and in extension an arc (continious or regularily pulsing , either one is fine) for my potato launchers ignition. i have seen that a decent spark can be made by connecting to wires together connected to the capasitor, but i want it to work electronicaly , not manualy aka with a trigger what i want to know is how (if its possible) to create an arc from the disposable caremas transformer that will work straight away, or converted from the capasitors dicharge into ac current which can jump to cause ignition.

audio amplifier for singing arc speaker, 110v design

Okay, I'm planning on starting on a plasma speaker, I know somewhat how I want to build it. My neighbor has one of the old school neon sign transformers for sale, he wants next to nothing for it. So I intend to use that to simplify finding materials. I am incapable of designing a circuit, so I am asking for help. What I need is for somethng to control the 110v for the transformer based on the audio input. My alternate idea was to use two NSTs and have them become a stereo channel unit. I do prefer that idea myself. I simply have no idea how to control the sound from the arc without taking the arc out. Honestly, my electronics knowledge in circuit design made me think a really big relay would work. Until I realized that was stupid. Anyways, my preferred idea is using a project box to contain a circuit, fused around critical areas to prevent the music device being blown up on accident or anything else bad happening. A stereo plug, with one transformer being the left, the other the right. I also want to try to drive either the low voltage or the 110v computer cooling fan type things so that there is an airflow through the arc.  Please help me-I can't design circuits for the life of me, and I would rather this work out. Thanks!

Help: Opening/Cleaning a portable air conditioner

I don't think this is the right place for it but I'm desperate. I have a portable air conditioner (Whynter Arc-14s) and need to vacuum and remove mildew from the inside, especially the fan blades. Now, I did contact Whynter support (e-mail) and they were able to help me remove the screws with a PDF guide. This allowed me to remove the front. Unfortunately, the back case won't come off, even though I took out all screws I was directed to. They couldn't assist me anymore after that. Now I'm stuck, summer is ending and I never got to use it this year. So has anyone opened up a Whynter Arc-14s portable a/c?
