Seeking ideas for a haunted house! Pranks, gags and spooky stuff needed!

Hi all, My girlfriend and I are going to be making a haunted house and we're looking for ideas. We have access to an old abandoned house and we're going to pretend that one of us is a house inspector or a rat catcher or something and have friends set their friends up for a Halloween scare. We've got some ideas (right now we're trying to build an r/c servo that pulls the pin holding up a painting so that it suddenly falls off the wall.... Tina built an r/c prank flashlight that we can remotely turn off (so that the flashlight 'fails' in a dark scary room) and we have some old creepy porcelain dolls that we want to remotely activate (heads turning, arms moving, that sort of thing) but we're looking for more ideas. We will invite the guest to inspect the house with one of us while the other person controls the pranks and gags.  Anyway, if you have any great ideas or know of some good resources I would love to catch your feedback. Thanks! DAZU

Airport internet kiosk haunts my dreams. I must have one. Answered

I was at the Dallas airport and they had these great little kiosks with internet access. THE KEYBOARDS WERE AWESOME. They appeared to be indestructible and had a satisfying feel to them.... The kiosk had a few inscriptions: "Clearchannel", "Neptune Networks", and "DWF Free Internet". Does anyone know where I could find such a keyboard for my very own, or at least a supplier for those tasty, tasty push buttons?

How to duplicate this levitation effect?

I saw this video on Facebook which shows a Ouija board themed cake with the planchette hovering aboard the cake surface and spinning.People have asked how this is done, but the maker is not answering. It looks to me like it must be magnetic. I don't really care about cakes, but it would be cool to make something that levitates and even spins like this. A "haunted Ouija board" would be an obvious application fro a haunted house. So, how would you duplicate this effect?

I am having my first halloween in my first house. My neighbors said they go all out for holidays, and I've always wanted an awesome halloween haunt. My only problem is I've never had any electronic experience past screwing in a light bulb. I don't want to attempt programming dealing with relays or microcontrollers, etc yet. I'm just looking for things that will be fun and basic. Any body know of any ideas to get my props moving without zapping myself?

Is anyone familiar with an Euler's Disk? (physics, conservation of energy and angular momentum demonstration).

At this one site I haunt now and then, looking for new science toys and things to hack, I came across this little item called a Euler's Disk.  I am assuming at this point, that there is quite a bit of specificity in the way this needs to be made so that it works, thus the $25 price tag. Anyone have any information (not contained in the ad) on this?   It'd be most appreciated.

Ring Contest Question

I have a question regarding the ring contest. Did you have to actually make the ring or could you have designed it, planned out what went into it, created a mold model, and had a jeweler create the finished product from your design? I designed my wife's engagement ring with drawings and even a wax model but did not have the proper tools or materials to actually make it so a local jeweler put my design into reality and I critiqued it until it was exactly as I wanted. Does that count for this contest?

Bamboo wind chimes/ flutes

In the older Robin Hood movie with Kevin Costner, when Robin, Azeem, and Duncan were running from the Sheriff's men, they ran into Sherwood forest.  The forest was reported to be 'Haunted'.  Partway in they heard strange sounds which were discovered to be what I believe bamboo wind chimes that were also flutes or whistles that were activated by the wind.   Anyone know how these could be made?   The main problem I see is that the flute/whistle needs to sound at low wind speed. I have never figures this part out.    Thanks.

Newbie... How do I create the singing pumpkin as a singing Christmas Ornament for my holiday bash?

Every year I have a huge Christmas party at my place, and every year I do something more over the top. I'm just now getting into lighting and things and have no background experience in any of this. For instance, you say relay switch... I say WHA? I of course can "look it up", and I've been known to dabble in circuitry. However, I wanted this year to try to re-create the singing halloween pumpkins (that I saw in a video), or the singing Haunted mansion ghosts, into singing animated ornaments (the big kind). I know this can be done, its just a matter of understanding the steps involved. For instance, I know I will probably need a projector of sorts and huge ornaments and some sort of animation. I mostly have mac products so if the programs are for windows they won't work for me. Also, the easiest will probably be the best since I'm new. I also checked out the hologram illusion technique and the glass projection as ideas for doing this or possibly showing a floating movie or christmas short. Thanks for any and all highly detailed information. I would love to get into these things as I'm a Christmas nut and well, most of the Christmas stuff out there just sucks for creativity, but Halloween decor is insanely cool.  I want Disney-like animations and projections. Something special that WOWS. Thanks again!

How do I construct a Pneumatic Cylinder?

I would like to know if anyone has made a Pneumatic cylinder out of an old Coleman Lantern green gas tank. Or What about making out of PVC? I'm making a halloween prop that it using a door closure as a piston. It needs about 60 to 70 pounds of pressure per use and will be fired about 10 times. It uses up about 5 pds of pressure on each firing. Any ideas on making a cheap regulator for this would be helpful too. The prop will be outside in the woods for a haunted trail. So having it self contained would be nice. I didn't want to run an air hose 150' to make it operate. Thanks.

sound effects modules

Hello!! I am planning several Halloween props that will benefit bigly from sound effects. For instance...I'm working on a mantel version of the demonic grandfather clock in Disney's Haunted Mansion. It would be awesome to have the sound of the ominous ticking, backed with a chime, that the "real" clock has. This could be an audio loop of just a few seconds. Some of the other parts of my scheme would be enhanced with short loops of sound effects or mood music...a minute or two at most. I don't have a background in electronics, but I can follow directions. Any advice on constructing a few, small sound effects modules? Thanks!!

Spontaneous echo effect? Answered

I was thinking of the old teddy bears which let kids talk to them and a chip recorded the sound and talked back. That made me think how creepy it would be to people walking through a Halloween haunt if they suddenly heard their own words repeated behind them. A quick search led me to this site: http://www.electronics123.com/s.nl/it.A/id.499/.f?category=2 It seems pretty inexpensive, but you need to hold down a button to record and push another to playback. Any electronic geniuses who could create an ambiance prop that records and plays back ever 10-20 seconds or so? Hopefully one that does not involve elaborate reprogramming. Maybe there is an off the shelf option I am not aware of. That would be welcome too.

Physical Space Installation Game

Looking for people who are interested in helping out on the electrical engineering side and/or set design of a installation game. Various people in the industry (theme parks and video games) should stop by during the exhibition and credit will be provided. On the electrical side it would be helping out with networking of Arduino boards to run each "gag" and be linked into a show control. On the set design side - help with the set design of the piece, lighting, and construction. The installation will take 3 players and have them "break into" a vault with various high tech security (lasers, pressure sensors, computers needing to be hacked, etc). Other examples of this type of work would be "The Tomb" and "Operation Spy" by 5wits, La Fuga by Negone (in Spain), interactive haunted houses, and theme park attractions. Message me if you have any questions. Thanks!

Help! I'm trying to design/build a remote controlled prank flashlight (with a r/c "on/off" rig)

Hi all, I'm building a haunted house and would like to make a prank flashlight that I can remotely turn off ("oops! The flashlight failed in the dark scary room!"). I'm using a 6V camping flashlight; my plan is to replace the big squareish 6V battery with 4 AA batteries (anyone know if that would work?); I would use the extra space in the battery housing to hide a remote-control system. Does anyone have any advice to build this prank? I don't know that much about r/c servos etc but I have a soldering kit and can follow instructions decently well enough :) Many thanks- Damian

Laugh a Little

Greetings!      Where I use to live my local paper posted some funny stories or or sayings titled "Laugh a Little" hence the name. I decide to post some of them to see what you think. None of these are ones that I made up, they're all from the paper. If you want me to post more I will. I have lots of them.      Enjoy.                                Questions that haunt me! Can you cry underwater? How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? What disease did cured ham actually have? How is it that we put  man on the moon before we figured out how to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up every to hours? If a death person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing? Why do people pay to go up in tall buildings and pay to look through binoculars at things on the ground? If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a coconut radio, why can't he fix a hole in a boat? If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?                                 Church Bloopers  The fasting and prayer conference includes meals. The sermon this morning 'Jesus walks on water.' The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.' Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husband. Don't let worry kill you off - let the church help. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.  A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

Any tips on some simple fabrication?

I'm trying to plan ahead for October, I work for a haunted hayride. Now my problem is I just purchased a full-face respirator(gas mask) from an Army/Navy Surplus, now I know why it was there. I figured I'd be able to find some accessories on the company website, unfortunately that didn't happen. They've moved on to a different design that makes getting parts for my mask a little difficult(their new design is dual exhalation/single inhalation). My mask is a single exhalation valve(bottom/middle), dual inhalation valve(top/sides) mask, I can attach two filters onto it if I need to. What I want to do is retrofit a hose so that it can screw in to the inhalation valves, where the filters go. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Cool things to build in a cardboard maze?

I am in charge of building a cardboard maze for my churches "Harvest Party" (basically a safer, family oriented alternative for trick or treating). I have been doing this for a couple years, and last year we build a maze about 80x60 feet big (all out of cardboard an duct tape!). So now we are starting to plan out this years maze. I was just wondering if anyone had some really cool ideas of stuff to put into the maze, or an interesting structure/passageway to add to the maze. Not sure about sizes yet, but I think this year we can expand the maze to about half the size of a basketball court or larger (so size does not matter). In the past we have done blacklights, strobes, etc. Please no ideas about skeletons/ghosts/hauntings. This maze is for kids, and is an alternative to "scarier" halloween traditions. Keep this in mind as you post please. Thanks, I am looking forward to your replies! A907

Tasteless, textureless chocolate chip cookies, EVERY first batch I make? Answered

For the last 3 times I have tried making chocolate chip cookies, the first round that I slide in the oven has come out completely tasteless and textureless. No light buttery taste, no vanilla taste, not even a vaguely burnt taste. And they aren't crispy or chewy either. They're definitely cooked all the way through, and I follow the recipes exactly. The 2nd batch normally turns out slightly better, but I couldn't tell you why. I am a rather bad cook, but that doesn't explain why all the cookies suck. :P To quote one of my friends, "This will haunt me for the rest of my life. I don't know how to even describe this cookie, as there is nothing to describe about it." My mother once made a vague comment about the temperature of the oven, but I'm still not sure how to fix it. It's probably not the recipe; I've used several different ones that are all fairly standard and similar.
