"Green" jobs in Dallas Texas?

Hey everyone, I'm a 21 year old female college student from Kansas, I just got laid off in December, and looking to move soon to the McKinney, Texas area. I'm currently working on my associate's degree, then I plan on transferring to UT-Dallas next spring semester to major in Business. My unemployment from Kansas ends in June, at which point I plan on moving permanently to Texas. I'm trying to take this opportunity to find something new and branch out, I've really been wondering if there are any "green" jobs out there that would be willing to give me a shot...I'm kind of a blank canvas, but I guarantee you I'm a hard worker, and I can learn fast. The environment is important to me, and I think there is huge potential in the "green" market. I would love to help you/your business and also be able to find a full time job...if you, or anyone you know might have something in mind, please contact me... 316-519-0578. -Lita :)

Texas Windpower = Big Money

Texas is now far ahead of California, and the rest of the country, in production of wind power. From the NYTimes:Texas, once the oil capital of North America, is rapidly turning into the capital of wind power. After breakneck growth the last three years, Texas has reached the point that more than 3 percent of its electricity, enough to supply power to one million homes, comes from wind turbines.Texans are even turning tapped-out oil fields into wind farms.

Thin edge of the wedge in Texan education?

Any Texans out there? Did you know what (revisionist?) plans were afoot in your education system? Even as a panel of educators laid out a vision Wednesday for national standards for public schools, the Texas school board was going in a different direction, holding hearings on changes to its social studies curriculum that would portray conservatives in a more positive light, emphasize the role of Christianity in American history and include Republican political philosophies in textbooks. There have also been efforts among conservatives on the board to tweak the history of the civil rights movement. One amendment states that the movement created “unrealistic expectations of equal outcomes” among minorities. Another proposed change removes any reference to race, sex or religion in talking about how different groups have contributed to the national identity. - A greater emphasis on “the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s.” - A reduced scope for Latino history and culture. - Changes in specific terminology. Terms that the board’s conservative majority felt were ideologically loaded are being retired. (The new recommendations stress the need for favorable depictions of America’s economic superiority across the board.) - A more positive portrayal of Cold War anticommunism. Disgraced anticommunist crusader Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator censured by the Senate for his aggressive targeting of individual citizens and their civil liberties on the basis of their purported ties to the Communist Party, comes in for partial rehabilitation. - Language that qualifies the legacy of 1960s liberalism. Great Society programs such as Title IX—which provides for equal gender access to educational resources—and affirmative action, intended to remedy historic workplace discrimination against African-Americans, are said to have created adverse “unintended consequences” in the curriculum’s preferred language. - Thomas Jefferson no longer included among writers influencing the nation’s intellectual origins. Jefferson, a deist who helped pioneer the legal theory of the separation of church and state, is not a model founder in the board’s judgment. ... Heavy emphasis is also to be placed on the founding fathers having been guided by strict Christian beliefs. - Excision of recent third-party presidential candidates Ralph Nader (from the left) and Ross Perot (from the centrist Reform Party). - A recommendation to include country and western music among the nation’s important cultural movements. The popular black genre of hip-hop is being dropped from the same list. None of these proposals has met with final ratification from the board—that vote will come in May, after a prolonged period of public comment on the recommendations. Still, the conservatives clearly feel like the bulk of their work is done; after the 120-page draft was finalized last Friday, Republican board member Terri Leo declared that it was "world class" and "exceptional." First paragraphs from New York Times Headline paragraphs from Yahoo News It occurs to me that it may be appropriate for some members to have a rather forceful word with their elected representatives - at all levels - about the damage these proposals will cause in the American education system...

Educators and Where to Find Them

I am in search of educators and students using Instructables as part of a course or class. I would like to present at my state and national art education conference in the next year on how to use Instructables.com as a resource for student learning, sharing, critique, and assessment, but I have not been able to try this yet in my own classroom. It is a hope for the future, as my district has Instructables blocked through our web filter presently. If you are using Instructables for any of these purposes or know of someone who is, please drop me a line through a comment or PM so we might connect and share thoughts and experiences.   I'm posting this in feedback, because I am unaware of any way to find these people otherwise. Could there be some way to search for users that have added a particular city, state, or country to their profile? A profession section in the profile that is also searchable would be helpful as well.  Additionally, I am all for web anonymity and staying safe online, but it seems rare for authors to include their location in their profile. Requiring or encouraging authors to include at least the country of origin would  make it easier to understand and connect with those who come from a country or state/province/county that is not your own. For example, if I see an ible with less than perfect grammar or spelling, it is easier to overlook when I see that the author is not from an english speaking country. I have my state listed on my location, because we Texans have some pretty unique traditions and perspectives that may seem foreign even to those in another state.

Where to find anyplace with Bamboo in Texas? Answered

I've been trying to find a location in Texas (preferably Central) that either sells or has large stalks of Bamboo. Until I get a place of my own where I can grow my own bamboo, i'll have to stick to finding my own elsewhere. I've looked all over the internet for anyplace that sells it near my town, but like heck they do. Does anyone know where I can get large bamboo stalks anywhere in this tolerable circle of Hell?

Most Powerful Laser Built in Texas

Over in Texas, a new laser has been built that can zap with a full petawatt of power. That's a quadrillion watts (that's 15 zeros) of power that gets blasted in 150 pemtoseconds. While this is not the most powerful laser ever made (that was a 1.25 petawatt laser) it is the most powerful laser currently operational. All for the cost of $7 million. So what's the point of it all?"We can put materials into states that you can't access here on earth," said Mikael Martinez, the laser project's manager. "You'd have to go out into space and hang out with an exploding star to observe what we plan to observe here in Texas."Check out the full article at Wired to see how they pull off this trick.

LOCAL GROUPS

We really need to connect !  I am looking for other instructable machines to connect with.  We, as humans, are the best machines when we connect with others with similar interests.  I have particular interests, but I would like to match them with ones that I do not have.  We all have ideas, inventions, and other agendas which we can achieve if we pool our efforts together with the right contacts.  Lets do this and get off our collective butts!  We have the potential but we will never realize our goals and dreams if we work purely on our own.

Can anyone identify the insignia or badge on this Onyx ring and what it represented?

This ring was part of some jewelry that belonged to my mother, born in Dallas, Texas in 1910.  Her family (mostly Presbyterian) and ancestors lived in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota and Britain.  I wondered if it was a Christian Church or school, because of the cross and candelabra. It is small and was likely a lady's ring.

Help build a non-microsoft computer like atari or commodore or Texas Instruments

Enter comment on the part of the computers and dial up telephone network you would like to help build. This computer should not have microsoft or icons that slow down computers and make them annoying. The rom should enable the computer to turn on instantly. There should be about 5 rom chips including , video rom, a sound rom , a disk drive rom , a basic rom . The keyboard should include graphics keys of some choice. The right side of the keyboard has to be different. Since this might be a high volume computer the memory might be less than annoying microsoft. Mandatory commercial viewing might be a possibility. The dial up network might have less complex programs. Everyone should be able to write a program and type save. The problem here might be an excessive demand for 3.5 inch disks and cd disks.

Building probe/sensor for TI Nspire CX CAS?

My TI Nspire CX CAS just arrived in the mail today!  It's an upgrade from a TI84, and my reliable old TI82.  Just a quick search yields a lot of information on how this calculator can be used as much more than a graphing calc. There is software available for scientific use, which incorporates specially designed probes to measure everything from sound to pH levels.  One that caught my eye as a possible diy project was a microphone.  It appears that there is an application that is capable of measuring and mapping sound waves.  An interfacing microphone.  Can't be too difficult, can it? As soon as it arrived, I popped on to Instructables and did searches for anything Nspire CX related, but received the dreaded "no results found".  I'll have to get to work.  Does anyone have any experience with this calculator or it's data functionality? Thanks!

Automata Weevil - Creating a Giant Moving Weevil for the Stage

Crazy internal gears and hidden winches went in to creating this amazing non-motorized spectacle for a stage production of The Difficulty of Crossing a Field. A team at Texas Performing Arts at the University of Texas at Austin (my alma mater!) came up with the elegant solution shown in the video above.    J.E. Johnson speaks more about it here.
