Bearings?

I'm looking at the VXB.com web site and can anyone tell me if the bearings are a fiber casting outside or a full metal bearing. Better yet does anyone have the part or kit number. I spoke with a sales rep and she asked if I needed a fiber outside or full metal bearing.

The Bears :-(.

Ok, this is a forum topic for Chicago Bears fans (and really, all sports fans). Who thinks that the Chicago Bears are the most depressing team to be a fan of? I just got done watching the Bears/Falcons game. That was depressing. They had their chance to come back... and they blew it! Oh well, there's always next week.

bearing to shaft

How would I secure a 1/4" id bearing to a 1/4"shaft? The bearing slides on very easily and is a little sloppy. I bought these from a supply co. thinking a 1/4" id bearing would fit properly on a 1/4"shaft. Any one have and ideas?

Bearing/fulcrum for a pendulum

I want to swing a locket on a chain like a pendulum and I want to minmise the friction experienced where the chain attaches to the supporting post. What sort of bearing or similar device should I use for this? Ideally it should be available in a bronze/dirty brass colour but I guess I can deal with it if it isn't.

Low friction "bearings"

For several of my projects I required some sort of bearing that would not only allow for a minimised free play but also very low friction. Before you get too exited: This is not a new type of bearing or anthing for heavy duty loads, not even for ongoing use without servicing.I found that even slightly heavier things rotated on makishift bearing far easier if the axle was verticall instead of horizontally. This gave me the idea to try a simple needle-bearing approach. This is how it goes:1. Grind and polish your axle to get a nice needle point - it must be perfectly centered!I prefer to do this with the axle in a fast spinning drill on a fine grinder. The polishing in a simlilar way, but please do not try it with a cloth in your hand on a spinning axle!2. The other part of the bearing is a screw or pin with a punch mark.I grinded and polished a punch for this so it has an angle of 60° and polished it to a mirror finnish. If alignment is of importance then of course the pin/screw must work for this purpose! If in doubt make it spind an use a pencil to get the true center.A drop of sewing machine oil and it spins nice and with very little friction. The key is to adjust the gap(s) between axle and punch mark to next to nothing. You don't want any pressure along the axle as you would "drill" a hole into your mounts. And you don't want it too loose to avoid wobble.I hope it might give you an idea for your next project.

How do I mount or house a Taper Bearing? Answered

I am wanting to build a lathe for turning larger projects (hollow wooden shells: up to 29" wide, about 30"-32" long, 1.5" thick all the way around). I have the motor, belts, drive wheels, etc... I just need to know what would be the best for mounting or housing a taper bearing. Would I absolutely need two of them (or more)? I am using a taper bearing because it is better for handling larger weight and stress.

Proper way to "mount" a bearing?

I'm not really sure on the proper way to mount a bearing. I had a few ideas on how to do so, but I want to know what your methods are, or which of mine are the best. Images are attached. In most of these methods, there's a little collar on the bearing. I didn't discover till recently that most bearings don't have those.

Giant Gummy bear...on a stick

Woohoo! Who doesn't want half a pound of giant gummy bear on a stick goodness?? They're "Hand made (with gloves on) in the US". For a mere $ 9.95, you can have the equivalent of 88 gummy bears - on a stick.Comes in green, red and blue. The history of the giant gummies is explained in teh awesome video, showing these little guys for what they really are: manna from gummy bear heaven! They're mounted on a "portability beam", otherwise known as a stick. Getting hungry? Go get one!Did I mention it's a gummy bear on a stick? No, this is not an ad. What to do with Ball Bearings?

For some while I've had a pile of ball bearings sitting here on my lounge room table, and without knowing what on earth to do with them, I now ask you. I have found uses such as adding to my "mousetrap racer," a small car, run by a mouse trap, that can go up to 15 metres. With ball bearings it goes twice as far as it used to, so I have become curious... what to do now though? All ideas would help, and an instructable would be even better. Cheers

Another Baby Bear knife

I found some more metal and decided to make a third Baby Bear knife. Thanks to Alan Folts for the original design. He sells these now and I did not like the price, so I decided to make my own. Here is a picture of the semi-finished knife. It has curly(flame) maple handles that I found in the wood pile. I would like to make a Kydex sheath for it, but have not found a source that will let me buy a few or one sheet  at a good price. Still looking. Anyone know of a good source please let me know. I only need a few sheets to start with. Carbon graphite looks cool.

Difference between a 608zz and 608 bearing?

I have started the swap to go to this extruder on my 3D printer. As such, I am taking the time to go ahead and use new bearings. I have a set of eight that came from a [one week old] skateboard someone broke, but they are 608zz. The BOM of the extruder calls for 608. From what I can see, the only difference is that the 608zz have a plate that covers the ball bearings, versus 608 which appear to be open. Is this true? and if not, what is the difference? Can I use the two interchangeable? thanks in advance!

Guys and gals, please bear with me.....

Those of you who know me well know I have been having a difficult time of late with things "locally", and recently things have come to a bit of a head.  So, as I appear and disappear, from time to time, I ask your forbearance in taking some of my comments with a grain of salt as I work things out in "my little world".    I AM working on a project, which I hope I can finish and finish researching how to USE it properly, within a week or two.   Hopefully this will help me out of the slump like hole I have fallen into. What's the most low tech way to make wooden bearing balls for a wooden ball bearing?

Last century I read an auto-biography by a back-to-nature man who needed to transmit power from a stream paddle wheel to his cabin by belts.  He said the hardest part was making a ball bearing.  He carved the balls out of oak with a knife and roasted them brown near a fire.  These lasted a long time.  How did he do that -- or how could he have done it using low tech?

how to get a stuck bearing cup out?

I was taking apart my rear wheel, when I noticed the lack of bearing balls and appropriate parts. I wanted to remove the bearing so I can replace it with a new one, however when I was attempting to remove the last cup of the bearing, it is stuck in the hub. The local mechanic couldn't get it out and said I needed a whole new cassette and hub; I was hoping there was some nifty way I could remove it.

Reduce steel tube diameter by 0.3mm Answered

I am trying to make a DIY CNC machine, using linear rails and the expert advice in the many awesome instructables out there on this topic.  I hit my first roadblock, and I need some help/advice please... The 16mm steel tubes I ordered for the sliding rails wouldn't fit in the 16mm linear slide bearings SCS16LUU that I ordered, they are ever so slightly too big. With a lot of force I could get the rail in the bearing, but it wouldn't slide without extreme force - certainly not the smooth sliding motion it's supposed to be! I've probably ruined the bearings by forcing it in, but I'm not worried about that so much right now (I have spare bearings). I broke out the digital callipers, and the rail diameter measured 16.3mm - that's .3mm more than expected, and more than can fit in the 16.0mm bearings. So now I need to reduce the steel rails by 0.3mm. I have only hand tools at my disposal, and no experience accurately reducing steel rod diameter. I guess another alternative is increasing the slide bearing diameter, but these are sealed bearing units and difficult to get at. Does anyone have any ideas ?  Would it be easier to order new steel? Please let me know any thoughts on this, I'm desperate here.  Thanks in advance,
