Speed Record for Cal 40

Any one know of top speeds hit in Cal 40? I presume this would be a transpac speed.

Steampunkesque 50 cal Rifle

I'm not a huge fan of steampunk, with the exception of Lady Clankington ;-), simply because much, nay most of it, exists just as a prop, not a a functional object.  So when I ran across this beautiful rifle, I just had to share. The most amazing thing, is that someone handcrafted this in their home machine shop.  Truly a master craftsman. Steampunkesque 50 cal Rifle

Cal Lane's steel lace

The photo of this cut-steel lacework make me want to run out to the shop, grab the torch & some scrap steel, and start carving. Cal Lane cuts shovels into lace, oil drums into tapestry, and I-beams into filigreed sculpture with incredible delicacy. From the New York Times article: "The work is about the contrasts between the industrial and the fanciful, the opaque and the transparent. Ms. Lane described herself as "a person who always has opposites in my head."She started her adult life as a hairdresser (her mother owned a salon in Victoria), but she said she was a tomboy and "welding seemed to fit me better." The mix of feminine and masculine vocations (teasing hair and welding steel), she said, is encapsulated in her work."Check out more of Lane's work here and here. Amazing.

What would be a good alloy/ dimensions for an aluminum blowgun?

I would like to order an aluminum tube from McMasters.com but I'm not sure of what kind I should get for a blowgun.  If you could put in the dimensions you would get for a blowgun at http://www.mcmaster.com/#aluminum/=7mdkul that would be great, thank you.  The only set thing I need for the tube is for it to be less than a .50 cal blowgun... If you could tell me if this would be good for a blowgun that would be great: http://www.mcmaster.com/#aluminum/=7mdm28                                                                                                                       Thanks,                                                                                                                         Wafflicious

Shoot .177 ~ .22 cal. pellets from a paintball gun?

I want to be able to shoot .177 or .22 caliber pellets from my Co2 powered paintball gun (single shot or semi-auto, I don't care ). Is this even possible to do without costing a small fortune?  If you have seen the clip on "You Tube" regarding the Castleman's  Air powered .30 cal machine gun you would kind of see what I'm after in a sense.  Any info. or links to the info. would be appreciated.

Students Build Car that Gets 2752.3 MPG

Students at Cal Poly have made a car that gets 2752.3 mpg. It has three wheels and moves one person along at just 30 mph, but it can drive most of the way across the U.S. on one gallon of gas. "The 96 pound car has three wheels, a drag coefficient of 0.12, a top speed of 30 MPH, and a modified 3 horsepower Honda 50cc four-stroke engine. It originally clocked in at 861 MPG and has been continuously tweaked to achieve the mileage we see today." Link

What i've been up to: the bolt action, bullpup, tube mag, pump action, dual shot, sling repeater. Got your attention yet?

Ok, for those of you who had seen my shotgun design, you could probably tell it was over before it had even started.  I had tried 5 different layouts and I couldn't get past the frontmost barrel without running into problems.  I think it was a cool design, but it was just too much for K'nex. Most of my best get designs just pop into my head at the most random times.  Is it just me, or does this happen to other people too?  Anyways I was trying to make it until the bell in pre-cal (my teacher is a crazy cat woman who enjoys talking about her imaginary husband) and I just started drawing this design.  Not only did it kill 10 minutes but it may just be the best thing I've come up with in terms of K'nex. The magazine looking thing in front of the handle is actually the driving mechanism in this gun.  Shots are housed in the stock pressing up against the pusher.  When the pump is pulled, the pusher moves down, allowing two bullets (one shot) into the chamber.  When the pump is released, the pusher pushes the bullets up against an upper section, where they wait for the trigger so be pulled, releasing the ratchet and the rubber band, launching the two bullets with a decent (I hope) spread.   Even though it doesn't shoot yet it is fun to just load the ammo (thats just how cool this gun it).  It is probably going to be a little different than what is shown in the video by the time I post it, but right now I'm just going with what I have.  I hope you like it and please let me know of any improvements you can come up with. -Kinetic

Is it worth dropping $400 on a really nice oscilloscope (Rigol DS1054Z)?

I will describe my situation: I am a hobbiest that likes to make cool projects, and plan to get into maybe RF analog stuff, (maybe start out with making a few FM bugs, reverse engineer a simple video transmitter kit, and a few other things.) as well get into arduino some more, AC analysis (learn about Xformers, power factor, maybe some math, etc.) and I so currently have an old 2ch. 30MHz analog oscilloscope that is a PITA to make real measurements with. Not only is it huge and takes up a lots of space, but also I'm not even sure it is in cal!) I will be transferring into UVA (or maybe VT) for EE, and gone this summer for a NASA internship at langley. (maybe I will be able to take it with me w/ a toolbox of some electronics stuff!) The scope I am looking at (what appears to be what many subscribers seem to use, and/or claim is pretty good) is the Rigol DS1054Z. I only know how to use my $30 30MHz BKprecision scope I got on craigslist from the son of a father who was a TV repairman, and have NO experience with the use of the fancy-shmancy digital scope! What little I know is from watching EEVblog review of other scopes in the past. (I do know that they can be useful for 'capturing' waveforms, and can be set up to trigger on a pulse, maybe a certain digital codes, and that could come in handy for reverse engineering crap.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v-tFYbc7h8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2qdtQkBKhc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETCOhzU1O5A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gStNYfqMXk What sells it to me, being a complete newbie to electronics and digital scopes is that it has a nice big screen, the specs seem good (other certainly think, I have no intuition of what any of those things mean except the bandwidth, and maybe the sampling rate, 1GSa/s), 4 channels, intensity graded display, and it has loads of functions and stuff for me to grow into, and hacking it to make it think it is a DS1104Z is tempting, but I probably will not do that right away. Maybe once I feel what it offered is limiting. The deal breakers is the $400 price, a bit steep for me (cheap for something this good, apparently but still.), the fear that by the time I really start using it, it will be obsolete and the same money can buy some quantum super duper ASIC tech whiz bang 3GHz 100Gsa/s 1GB segmented memory spectacular scope! I am not really sure if it has a source, or signal generator either. Some sources claim that higher end ones do, or certain models anyway, and it seems like the official site say's no. http://www.rigolna.com/products/digital-oscilloscopes/ds1000Z/ds1054z/ That brings me to my next point. Should I also get a decent function generator?

Knex Firepower Standard

Hello everyone I (like alot of my freinds) get tired of... oh why dont you just search "Knex gun" and look at the mini descriptions and read them all, or maybe most and think what alot have us geting tired of, Go ahead! see you in maybe a min or 2? just click back or whatever to return here! and continue from where you last read.Welcome back! Do you see what what I'm talking about? well there are two things and if you did not notice these things feel free to look again! And what is Sypran talking about? (drumroll) the Quotes "It's very powerful" "easy yet powerful knex gun" "gun shoots about 60-70 feet" "this is a very small gun but will fire about 50 feet" "A deadly knex gun" and that is just the first page! i could go on for hours (ok maybe a long time) of coppy and pasteing these quotes!honestly i see to much "easy yet powerfuls" i cant realy tell what is powerful! so what do we do? well we take out time building maybe some and it turns to be not that great or it is great!, or we rush to see if KILLERK, Mepain, Extreme builder, Trainman2000 (i will always call him that >=D)You (aka mykhailo),Perfect duck,loosewire,Dsman19(i cant rember numbers) Oodalumps, am i forgeting anyone? (tell me if i am) has any new ideas/guns.so what do we need to do? WE NEED A FIREPOWER STANDARD something simple like 1-20 and how to mesure it, in earth science they clasify rocks hardnes by what they scratch (nail 2.5 glass 5.5 and so on) we need it something like paper peice, but not that for some guns have alot of power but cant peice due to low velocity and or dull non sharpened bullets.also if you know anything about real guns the bigger the bullet, the more powerful =D but the smaller the bullet the higher peirce rateing (a 0mm would be the best peirce but little damage) so in other words the biger the bullet (45 cal example) the more stoping power it will have but less muzzle velocity (pierceing ability) wile the smaller (7mm) the knocking over/stoping power is anything to be desired, but it will have high muzzle velocity so peirce through more materials. yet with (if it was at all posible) a 0mm (or basicly nothingness) in theory could peirce through ANYTHING but would not stop the person or thing in any way so the same pricable stands for knex notice the shotguns that shoot conectors (or killerks magnum with his amo) create a biger bang sound, they do more damage, but need more force to get all that mass through a paper wile the ones that shoot sharpened (like gorkem's) or greens can peirce paper with ease. so not only will we need a firepower test but a peirce test. peirce is easy enough its velocity and ammo size and a variable if it is sharpend and we have an instructable on how to determin bullet speed. power is bullet size+ extentions (killerk's magnum ammo like) also a little velocitybut the system needs a ruberband standard to keep in mind no putting on more then the systems amount of ruber bands or size of ruber bands (i know people will do this anyway)so what am i basicly saying in this topic? easy please people we need records of bullets speeds for sertain bullets with your guns it is easy since most of you seem to have digital cameras and there is an instructable about it. also we need to know a standard RB cause i dont know whats standard in the rest of the world besides USA and even then i dont know if its standard in the other states (they say americans like everything bigger and sadly sometimes it's true)i have tested some guns out and lets say that stong yet easys from the first page so far are low... so maybe we need a test for difrent kinds of guns! i have seen rifles that fire like a medium pistol (for they are exept they have a longer barrel, bipod, stock, and scope) should these even be given a 6 out of 10 in every catagory? or should it be 2 outa 10 for rifles. if lets say we got a standard of ruberbands to be 2 (not including trigger ruberbands) that where (makeing this up) a circumfrance of 3 inches, end of barrel being 2 feet away from camerathe adverage gun (all makeing up still) 25 feet with white shooting 1 foot per sec, does not dent an empty can. bullet speed of 5 feet per second with a max range of 40 feet (acurate ranges ppl use mesuring tape) with a white bullet that dents and peirce through an empty can we can conclude that the gun has high peirce rate but beter then normal power rateing. so a 7/10 for peirce if best was a max of 60 ft bullet speed of 10 ft per sec and white rods then it could have scored higher.one day when i search "knex gun" i want to see "my first Sniper!, it scored a 7/10 firepower and 8/10 pierce with 100ft range" cause then i can say that is a good gun I'm going to build!
