Speed up country contest eligibility? Answered

I contacted the lottery inspection agency here in Sweden, the agency in charge of all things lottery/contest etc. According to them there is no reason why Sweden should not be an eligible country for the contests. I sent the info, links and contact information to the Instructables support and service email addresses. Is this going to make a difference? Is it going to speed up the process? I mean, From what I could find the last time Instructables added a country to the contests was in 2012... Have they stopped adding countries? Do they just not care anymore?

Using Plasma Arcs to Deal with Trash

"A Florida county plans to build a facility to get rid of their landfills, generate electricity and produce construction material, all using a process called plasma gasification which vaporizes garbage at temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. The $425 million facility expected to be built in St. Lucie County will use plasma arcs to turn garbage into gas and rock-like material. It will be the first municipal plasma waste processing facility in the united states, and the largest in the world. Expected to be completed within 2 years, the 100,000 square food facility will process 3,000 tons of waste per day. Fed not only with waste being produced currently, the facility will also begin to process the waste already in the county landfill. Estimates predict that the entire volume of the existing landfill, 4.3 million tons of trash collected since 1978, will be processed within 18 years."Read More...It almost seems too good to be true, what do you think?

We live off grid and are looking for answers for power and grey water system. Can anyone help? ?

We currently have a gasoline generator and this provides all the electricity but would like to use renewable resources. We have built an elevated water tank and use gravity but this is only accessible during the summers, we live in Iowa. We haul the water in and bring drinking water we bring (only there on weekends currently). In our county they said we need to have a septic tank. We have an outhouse but no grey water disposal. In our county we cannot allow anything which touches the body to touch the ground so throwing it out on the ground isn't a long term option. Any options we are aware of are OK with the county but we would still have to run it through a septic tank first. This defeats our low budget project. We want to live simply and I have a hard time understanding why it is OK for the cattle lot just up the creek from us to run off from the lot into the creek but our bodies would contaminate our land. (I think the cattle lot already does this as it is sewage washed down to us) We do not currently use any of this creek water. Our cabin is about 1/4 mile away from the creek. Any new ideas?

Instructables at school; MORE information needed.

Since publishing my last Instructable, the subject of filters and blocks has been cropping up. Some schools, it seems, block or filter Instructables for a variety of reasons. If you are a student or staff member in any level of education, could you let us know; Where you are (country, state, county etc) What level of establishment you are trying to use Instructables at - primary, middle, high, university What you are (staff, student) Whether you can access instructables at school If not, do you know why not, and where the decision to filter was made (school, county etc)? Are there different filters for staff vs students? Anything else that might be useful. If you don't feel comfortable revealing this information in public, please PM me - names won't be included in any summary that gets put together. UPDATE: The site now has FaceBook logins - has this affected the filtering at your school? Plus: If you are a teacher, do you use the site for / at school? If you are a student, do your teachers use the site?

UK hacked car takes speed record off Americans.

Just over a year ago, the BBC had a coffee-powered car built, along the lines of this popular instructable. Now, that same car has been used to set a new speed record for a gasification-powered car, previously set at 47mph by Beaver Energy, using a car run on gasified wood-chips. With his car running coffee grounds, engineer Martin Bacon and his team from County Durham. pushed the record up to 65mph, an official Guinness Record, although it falls short of the team's goal of 80mph. I think Florida is ruled by a mad king.

I just heard a story on the news that one of the local school districts will be ending summer vacation two weeks early. When school starts is codified by law and the only way for a school to receive an exemption to open early is to be an "academically high achieving school". Does this make sense to anyone? Schools that are doing good (as defined by a remarkably stupid standardized test) get more time to teach, whereas schools that perform poorly get less time. I can't really understand that reasoning. I've worked in public education, and I'll never understand the reasoning behind anything they do.and as an aside.Florida, come to play ball at the beach, stay because you've been imprisoned for playing ball at the beach. ~sigh~Wanted to add one more thing, The brevard county transit system is names "Space Coast Area Transit" AKA "The SCAT" and their website is ridescat.com. If you have no idea why I'm mentioning this, consider yourself lucky.

With gambling soon being OK'd in MD, will you be able to win prizes off of say, 1vs100 LIVE? Answered

Alright, so I'm sure many of you saw my comments griping about not getting Xbox Live. Well, my dad finally succumbed to my begging, and said that he'll set up a home network for my house, if I got him the router and the adapter for the 360. I'm excited, and I think he may be, too, because when we set up a network, he can use his laptop online without having to transfer files or connect to a finicky, unlock wireless access point. Anyway, I noticed that you get 1vs100 Live with a gold subscription, but, it also says you can't win MSpoints off of it if you live in Maryland or a couple other states. Our state legislature passed a gambling bill(they're putting in some slots/tables near a mall that happens to be in my county), so I'm wondering if that'll let you win prizes off of games on the internet.

Where lame computers go to die.

If you're like me you probably have an "out of sight, out of mind" attitude towards garbage. Usually, when I throw something out, I don't give too much thought to where it is going to end up. The problem with such an attitude is that the garbage ultimately has to go somewhere; it is unlikely that we are going to start blasting our trash into space any time soon. So, the question is, when we toss out really toxic things like old computers or televisions, where, in fact, are they ending up? The edge of town? The edge of the county? The next state over? West Africa? A small shanty in China?National Geographic has an amazing article in their current issue about the fate of such e-waste."People have always been proficient at making trash. Future archaeologists will note that at the tail end of the 20th century, a new, noxious kind of clutter exploded across the landscape: the digital detritus that has come to be called e-waste."Photograph by Peter Essick

Pardon?? (Update: some have been done)

A brief exchange between myself and Whatsisface utterly confused Keith-Kid, the poor bairn. That reminded me that, as well as the language confusion between English and American (we walk on pavements, you drive on them), there is a deeper, older division.I am from Cumberland. It's "Cumbria" now, but it's old - many of the town names are Icelandic and Viking in origin. Parts of the county were so insular that neighbouring valleys had different languages. The town of my birth is Workington - the name translates as "The town of the people of Worca" - the town, and the land around it, were a small tribal state, ruled by King Worca. So, I thought I'd lay down a little challenge. What do you think these traditional Cumbrian dialect words mean?Google if you must, but you're probably wasting your time...Thissen - yourself, youSneckShilliesHag wormSegsScruntTuppingUppies and downies - Traditional precursor to football. Getting into Lacrosse

Today in gym class we "played" lacrosse, and by play, I mean we threw and caught the ball. Still, it was mucho fun-o! I think I would like to play lacrosse, or at least get into it more. I seemed to excel today, and I do like contact sports. The problem is, I don't have much training in lacrosse. I do know that it is similar to hockey, both in field and rules. Another thing is that my (future) high school does not have a lacrosse team. Only 2 of the 4 high schools in my county have one. I could play for rec, but what I am thinking is: Do you think I could get my high school to support a lacrosse team? So, everyone (and by everyone, I mean you, Brenn10), do you think you could help me out learning about lacrosse? What do I need to get started and practice? Do any certain body sizes excel at lacrosse more than others? Thanks, Bran!

California Government tries to prevent reuse; issues ACCRC a violation

Just the other day while I was cleaning out old computers I thought to myself how wonderful it was that the Alameda County Computer Recycling Center was nearby. The ACCRC is a not-for-profit organization that accepts old electronic parts to build working computers that they give away to people in need. Anything they can't use gets properly recycled, and they do this all without charging any fees. The Department of Toxic Substance Control of the California Environmental Protection Agency is causing trouble for the ACCRC, and this may ultimately lead to the ACCRC's demise. In short, the government is using the letter of the law to do totally bone-headed things, and has slapped the ACCRC with a violation. It's our government, and it should work for us to encourage smart ways, like the ACCRC, to lessen our impact on the environment. Even if you don't live in California, this is important because California typically leads the nation on these types of issues. There's a couple of things you can do, including contacting people at the government agency and donating directly to the ACCRC. Check ACCRC's founder James Burgett's blog for details on both. More coverage here at Boingboing.

Best Government

I have always thought that a localist, complete democracy with communist economic system was superior.  The countries' sizes would be similar to counties in the USA (30-40 miles across), because every area is different and requires different laws.  Every human of age would have one vote in all matters.  A number of people would be hired, like congressmen, to vote on trivial things that the rest of the population doesn't care to vote on, but members of that group would have no more say-so than anyone else.  Laws would be written up by lawyers commissioned by citizens, and would be added to the next ballot if a predetermined number of signatures was obtained petitioning for it. Instead of buying things with money and being paid for work, workers would be given cards (like Drivers' Licenses) that allow them an amount of food and luxuries. In order to ensure that people do all the jobs that need to be done, a sliding pay scale would exist.  Job categories would be ranked in importance by periodic votes, and ranked in terms of positions filled by computer (if there are not enough farmers practicing, the ranking for farmers would go up).  Votes to determine importance of jobs would be done by occupations as wholes (farming would get one vote, clerks would get on vote, etc. in order to prevent jobs with the most people from voting themselves most important)  In this system, the most important jobs that have the lowest worker-to-necessary-worker ratio would get 50% more luxury entitlements than people with the least-important, most-practiced jobs.  Every worker would get the same amount of food, based on number of dependents.  People who could not work due to temporary or permanent disability would be given a special card that allows food, and fewer luxuries than full-time workers, and would need to be renewed periodically, to be sure that holders actually cannot work.  People who have lost their jobs would be issued a temporary unemployment card that allows them food and few luxuries while they look for a job.  They must demonstrate that they have been looking for a job to the best of their ability to keep their card.  Students would be allowed food and the smallest amount of luxuries, and their education would be free.  Standards for workers would be determined by popular vote. While each country would only be county-sized so that it can do what is best for itself, all the countries would be part of a United Nations style meeting that mediates to prevent war and puts regulations across all the countries. So, what do y'all think the best way is?  Please be wordy.

Friend of Instructables and Friend of Humanity Held in China

Long-time friend of Instructables James Powderly of GRL, FFFFFAT LAB and Throwies fame is currently reported to be held by the Chinese Government for over 24 hours without further word for planning a pro-Tibet LASER Tag event in Beijing. "James is proud to have been kicked out of the Synthetic Times new media art exhibition in Beijing because he wouldn't censor his little art project. James wonders why organizations like the MoMA, Parsons, Eyebeam, Ars Electronica and many other arts and cultural institutions around the world who claim to support free speech and expression would participate in a show like this. But they did! It was after being kicked to the curb by the show's curator that James connected with Students for a Free Tibet and decided he would go to China anyway and do what he though was right in support of Tibet, Taiwan, free speech and the people of China. James lives, if indeed he is alive, in the County of Kings, Brooklyn, and teaches at the Communication Design and Technology program at Parsons the New School for Design. I am James Powderly and I approve of this message."We wish the best to him and his family. This via Boing Boing.

Man Crashes SUV Through Local Building.

This is huge news, a man crashed into a building right in the middle of town at over 75 mph. It is probably hard to understand it's importance if you are unfamiliar to Gig Harbor, but I've walked past that building and driven down that road thousands of times. The building used to be a restaurant, but the owners sold it and it became a fitness gym. It's right at the heart of Gig Harbor, basically. GIG HARBOR, Wash. - An SUV crashed into the 1-2-3 Fit gym at Pioneer Way and Harborview Drive early Wednesday, killing the driver.Witnesses said the driver was traveling at about 75 mph when the vehicle crashed into the building at about 6:30 a.m.The SUV came to rest on a desk. The 26-year-old driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed instantly.Four or five people on exercise equipment narrowly escaped injury. Gym member Ryan Ryan was doing push-ups at the time of the crash."The odd part about this is there was no attempt to miss the building, no attempt to brake, and the vehicle speed was three-four times the speed limit," said Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Dept.Link and Video.I know it's a few days old. I was unable to post a topic earlier because of homework.

How to install a well-fed water system (pumps, pressure tank, delivery, etc.)?

I need to know how to install a water system from my well asap.  Full details of hookup.  I have an existing well with a submerged pump in it, but don't know if pump still works.  Presently digging it out to put power to it and find out.  Water "spout" coming out of ground also plugged and am trying to clear.  I have a pressure tank ordered that I hope will work.  Pipe to house all ready dug, checking patency and damage.  If pump doesn't work, is it repairable?, ie., how does it work so I can repair.  How does pressure tank work?  Any tips to make this easier are greatly appreciated.  I am senior, disabled gal who is at war with water company because they are partially, if not completely, responsible for my house burning down a few months ago.  I lost everything.  I am OK with a good basic knowledge of mechanics, but this has me stumped, pls offer any comments that will help.  I am not the only person of my community victimized by our county government.  RClark0240@att.net

Decrease plastic recyclables volume, possibly a shredder? Answered

We recycle everything that our county accepts, and by far, the plastics take up more space than anything else.  There is a large amount of air volume inside and between bottles.  I've seen the trick where you compress the bottle and then screw on the lid, but this isn't practical for a lot of containers.  What I would like to see would be some way to reduce a plastic container to smaller pieces that would take up less space.  It needn't be ground into pellets, just cut small enough to reduce the wasted air volume. I've thought of two possibilities, but I'm open to other suggestions.  One is some kind of motorized shredder that would grind/cut the plastic.  The other is a large container, similar to the slap-chopper kitchen gadget, that would have blades to slice the plastic. I have three main requirements.  It must be more convenient than taking scissors or a knife and manually cutting up the bottle.  It must be able to handle most common plastic bottles up to large laundry detergent size, and reduce their overall volume.  The third is it must be fairly safe to use.  We will be adopting soon and I don't want to have to worry about small children falling into the bottle grinder.  :-)

I am not dead

I am sure the tiny couch proved that much, but it has not testified of my other projects, which do exsist. I just either forgot to take good pictures or lost parts of the pattern or a combination of both. I have recently made this really awesome dice bag, which I will make an attempt to put up here, no promises though. The other big project I have made was my very first doll, one based off the anime character Madoka Kaname. And she looks awesome. I would show you pictures of them both, but they are not currently in my possession. Both, along with several other projects, have been entered in my county fair, and most gained me some more ribbons. As for future projects, I have two commissions from my siblings that I am going to make, one being a hydra, the other being this Hulk bird... thingie. I am going to try harder to get these on here for you, and hopefully you will be able to see them too. One last subject, I am currently in the process of setting up an online shop to sell the things I make. If anyone has any suggestions that may help me along the way, I would love to hear them.
