International Fiber Collaborative

International Fiber CollaborativeSeeking Participants,The goal for the International Fiber Collaborative is to give a opportunity to people who enjoy working with crafts, whether professional artists, hobbyists or students to come together all over the world to express our concerns towards our countries extreme dependency on oil for energy. Those who participate will crochet/knit/stitch/patch/ or collage a 36"x36" fiber panel that will express each artists view on this topic. By taking the step to create a panel with any design, and sending it in, in the larger picture, is expressing your concern towards this topic. Once all 800 panels that are needed are received, they will be sewn together to completely cover an abandoned gas station and gas pumps in central New York. FIBER ARTS CONTEST?

Hi, Will sewing projects qualify as an instructable in the fiber arts contest? Best, Susan

Locating ELS Fiber

Good afternoon! I've been browsing, and tried to look up information on ELS fiber, short for Electroluminescent fiber. Googling it will get plenty of links to the initial article or two about it's creation roughly a year and a 1/2 ago, but nowhere can I find any information on where or how one can obtain any of it, outside of ready-made outdoor recreation clothing. I'd hoped someone might be able to assist me in this? I'd dearly love to get a hold of some for use in costuming. Thank you in advance for any info you could provide. Plastic Optic Fiber

Hi, I made a lot of research in order to find some plastic optic fiber in europe, and I finaly add to buy some full rolls of the one I liked. It it PMMA fiber with 0.3dB/m light loss, it polish well, and when use with long length, gives a sligher yellow / green color to the light (noticeable on white light, but really lower than the other I've tryed). If someone need some, I can make a kit with : -27 meters of 0.75mm diameter -15 meters of 1.00mm diameter - 7 meters of 1.50mm diameter I think thati ncluding shipping to anywhere I can send it for tens euros. If someone is interested, let me know and I will check shipping price and paypal fees. Regards, tReg.

I'm read a lot of document about optic fiber, and I've seen that: -many people are interested in optic fiber (it's magic, just like leds are) -people make some good craft with optic fiber, but sometime don't have the needed understanding of how it works, how to cut it, sand it, bend it, ...) -reader of the nice instructables here have trouble buying optic fiber when they want to start new project. I hope this group will help people learning from eachother, leading to new more interesting project and instructables. tReg.

How to use Fiber Optics?

I am making a super-discreet earpiece/IEM that is intended for any use where you feel bored, where you are not supposed to use electronic devices. Meetings, lectures, classrooms, etc. Basically, it's a 3.5mm jack wired to a Balanced Armature driver. Essentially, I remove the big, thick and bulky housings of earpieces and leaving the smaller drivers in place. I've been using thin copper cables in the earpieces I buy. They work, but are still visible. I found that optical cables are near invisible, glass-like. I intend to wire them into my earpieces. So, do I require lots of circuits? I can do those, if they don't poke a black hole in my wallet. No more than USD100, if entirely possible.  I just want to know how to change electricity into light and back again, and allow for audio transfer from MP3 player to earpiece drivers.

Is it possible to electroplate carbon fiber? Answered

Hi, I'm into knifemaking. There are some carbon fiber knives on the market, but they all have very poor edge retention. (because the edge is made of carbon fiber as well) I was wondering if it would be possible to add a thick metal coating of a hard metal to a carbon structural center, as to coat the blade in a thin layer of metal. This metal would then be serving as the cutting edge, hopefully with better edge retention.  Is this at all possible? What types of metal could be used? Thanks in advance!

Fiber Arts Contest Questions

If you're looking at that new Fiber Arts Contest and just can't figure out what the heck it's supposed to mean, you're not alone. Traditionally we've run knitting contests on Instructables.  I love our knitting contests, but I know our community is capable of doing so much more with yarn and other fibers that I wanted to open it up to all sorts of skills.  The contest page describes acceptable entries as involving "Spinning, Weaving, Felting, Knitting, Crocheting, and Tatting," but I also encourage entries for tools and tips that accompany these crafts.  You might notice it does not mention sewing.  This is not a sewing contest.  Let me repeat that: This is not a Sewing Contest We will be launching a sewing contest next week, so fret not!  So my takeaway from this is to stop with the confusing contest titles, but "The Spinning, Weaving, Felting, Knitting, Crocheting, Tatting Contest" just wouldn't fit on the thumbnail!

usb over fiber optic cable

My house was once part of a business that was connected to neighboring structures via fiber optics for Internet.  I want to put in a security system with some usb cameras and of course we know what those limits are.  I have successfully made 25' usb/cat5 cables using this site... they work great but I need 50 - 60'.  I was wondering if it was possible to utilize these fiber cables for the data side of the usb and somehow power it by other sources?  I know a little about fiber like putting in connectors and such and I do have 2 transceivers.  I can make rj45/usb connectors for the tranceiver ends but I'm just not sure of the details or even if I'm barking up the right tree.  I'm not sure where the power fits in either. Any of you geniuses know how I could do this? Thanks

How to make your own fat optical fiber for solar device?

I'm prototyping a solar energy device, and need to transport a concentrated light beam a couple of meters without loss or, ideally, burning anyone's hand off. I was thinking of some kind of 'total internal reflection' medium, such as glass, but it needs to be cheap and easy to make/find, and it would be great if it had at least a little flexibility. Is there any way to make your own? Some kind of gel, or crystal, or maybe water if it wouldn't attenuate or absorb too much of the energy? Failing that, is there some existing material I could wrench out the back of something? Cheers, Daniel.

I need a special tool ? Answered

Has anyone any suggestions for a tool which would be "like" a camera iris, with a hole several mm long, but which can be varied in diameter from 1 (0.040 ") to 0.2mm (0.008"). I need to set the diameter fairly carefully, to just gently pinch a bundle of 70micron (0.0029"") optical fibres passed down the centre. The hole needs to be very circular and rigid, even as its closing...... Something kind of like the mechanism of a "pin-chuck" suggests itself, but wouldn't be very round in the limit. Any ideas ? Fiber optic cable to laser projector? Answered

I purchased a "Mr. Christmas" Laser (green) Outdoor Holiday Projector to add to my holiday lighting this year. Being rightly concerned with theft if I was naive enough to leave the projector outside, I thought of using fiber optic cable attached to the laser lens housing (still haven't worked out how I would accomplish that), and routing it from inside the house to a point outiside where the cable end would project on a wall or my garage door, providing a show (sans sound), but protecting the laser projector from theft. Is my idea feasible? If not, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

How to bend plastic optic fiber ?

Hi, I have 0.75, 1 and 1.5mm plastic opic fiber that I am using for my project (which will be the topic of my first instructables ;) ) I need a way to bend the POF in right angle. I don't care if the bending raidus is not very important (spec says max radius is 10 time diameter, 15mm radius is ok for me, and I don't care if I loose a little brightness). I want the POF to stay bend after I have bent it : it must keep the curve I gave it for at least 24 hours. I manage doing something not so bade (but really time consuming) by heating the POF with an hair dryer. I wander if anybody has a better tested idea ? (in the meantime, I'll try putin it in boiling water to see if it kep the shape once cooled). Regards, tReg.

How to make roll cables through corners and all around ? Answered

Well I decided to join cause I was looking for a solution of a problem I have at my job. I work in a datacenter, and frequently I have to pull delicate cables, which have to run through many corners, sometimes they got stuck between sharp metal pieces on top of the racks, or even the doors. Not only that, but also the times that get to pull them from one place to the other (sometimes cables of 60 or 80 meters. You have to be also carefull on not pulling so much. So I was thinking in to invent something to put in many places as auxiliars that let run the cable in every corner. Many Ideas but I am not in use very frequently with the inventive that your experience have. But I think I discovered what I like most in life. INVENT THINGS.!!!! Help! Flash/fiber optic wire question

Help help! I was following the instructions at http://tutorialgeek.blogspot.com/2010/11/fix-flash-on-nikon-d70-dslr.html to fix a flash on a camera I got on ebay. All was going great until the black wire came out. I tried putting it back in and got a terrible shock, and the flash no longer worked. So I thought it was a grounding wire. I tried to strip it and put it back in its little holes, but it did NOT want to strip. Downloading the service manual later showed me that it didn't want to strip because it's really fiber optics in there. In trying to fix it some more, I got shocked a few more times, pretty strongly (with the battery out, even). I'm not sure if I've fried a component or not, but at least nothing smells bad. I'd like to try to put a new fiber optic wire in there, but I have no idea where to find one. Can anyone help me? The gauge of the wire is pretty standard for small electronics. Please let me know!! Susan

Caustic Soda vs Soda Ash, using to clean a bast (stem) fiber. Do they have the same affect on the strength of the fiber? Answered

I'm working on a project to clean (dissolve) bark off of some fiber that adheres to the inside of the bark. I've used caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) successfully but it weakens the fiber. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) also works and seems to have less affect on strength but I'm wondering, chemically, if there's any real difference. I don't have access to any gear to accurately measure the real tensile strength. Thanks for your help. Shanti Mama Kathmandu Nepal
