Good new car

Hello boys and girls I have been saving up my lunch money for several months and thought about buying a new car. (my mom gave my car away to my nephew). I want something that is cheep, gets good gas mileage and preferable not made in the Republic of Korea (no Kia or Hyundai for personal reasons). I thought about a hybrid but they are like 6 grand more expensive and the advantage of MPG doesn't really justify the cost. I figure i can spend under 20,000. but i only make about 1 grand a month (take home) but i dont know how much insurance is going to be (probably expensive because im under 25) Or should i get one of them "pre-loved" cars at the dealer. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. (i thought about getting a bike but its not really a family friendly vehicle.

HHO and you!

Ok, so hho has become the new fad in the mpg race, but is it really effective?  Conservation of energy dictates that the energy required to separate water in to its base components is equal or greater to the energy released during its reconstitution.  The key to making HHO a viable source of additional fuel would be utilizing the waste heat from the engine to provide the electricity needed. TEG's + exhaust manifold + water = ? Discuss!

Can Non-Hybrid Cars Get 100+ MPG Today?

  We're not talking about hybrids here; our topic is cars powered by the basic IC-engine that relies on gasoline and not electric motors. Today's gasoline engines are not designed to combust/burn gasoline efficiently. Even with the advent of using high pressure fuel injection techniques that are computer controlled, we still fall short of the mark. Partly because liquid gasoline can't burn, only gasoline vapors burn, and there lies our problem. The same goes for injecting the high pressure droplets of fine-mist liquid gasoline that enters the engine cylinder using our current nozzle ejector technology, it doesn't all burn at the same time! Engine designers assume that these droplets are instantly vaporized by the engine's hot cylinder walls, and then instantly explode/combust when ignited by the sparkplug. Not true, up to 2/3 of the fuel isn't vaporized and doesn't combust until later on in the cycle. The 1/3 that gets almost-instantly vaporized and burns will do so within the several thousandths of a second (Fig-1) it has before the piston moves down its 1/2-stroke (out of today's 4-stroke cycle) completing the engine power-portion of its cycle. This releases power and tremendous heat which indeed vaporizes the remaining ~2/3 of our fuel from its liquid droplet form, but too late. It essentially does so when the power stroke is almost over or the piston is just about ready to move into its up-stroke (2nd stroke of our four stroke cycle) phase. So, because of poor vapo-timing we have 2/3 of our fuel virtually wasted by exploding at near the bottom of the power stroke. This incorrect explosive timing, which happens to most of our fuel, imparts very little energy into the crankshaft because its effective "moment" (a product of explosive force and radial-component distance from crankshaft center) is insignificant by then. Various attempts at adjusting the combustion timing spark hasn't made a significant difference. Even though ~2/3 of the fuel is now exploding and providing a huge force, its small "influence" arm distance is rapidly diminishing to zero, and any huge downward force times near zero arm-length is still zero. Some clarification here, technically thermal-efficiency is not improved, pretty much all of the gasoline gets combusted today. That means the energy of the fuel is almost totally released, but not effectively used. The problem is the timing it takes to convert fuel-injected gasoline droplets into vapor to combust at the correct engine rotational time and extract that expended energy. If you did the math for any size engine rotating at say 3200 RPM, you would find that a 4-stroke engine can only extract that energy from combustion during one of the four strokes. And the time it takes to make that stroke happen is only about 9.4 thousandths of a second or 9.4 milisecs (msecs). Now picture the piston just below TDC, all its valves closed, under pressure and containing all the fuel and air it needs to combust. At this point our deadly cocktail has about half of the 9.4 or about 5 msecs to complete combust after the timed sparkplug ignites it. The half factor exists because the max portion of our power stroke (moment arm) occurs at the mid-stroke of the piston sliding down and turning the crankshaft. If all of our fuel isn't combusted by then, the moment-arm or distance from the piston-center to the crankshaft quickly reduces to zero. Again, only vapors combust within a healthy 2 msecs (Fig-1), while fuel droplets take a relatively long time (>5 msecs) to vaporize before it can combust. Unfortunately nature is stubborn and vaporizes ~2/3 of our injected fuel droplets only during roughly the second half of the power stroke. So this huge amount of energy gets wasted because even though the forces of combustion are huge, its moment arm is rapidly approaching zero. Infinity times zero is still zero! Engine designers/engineers have been plagued by this phenomenon ever since the creation of the 4-stroke gasoline or Otto cycle engine. We need to improve this intermittent combustion/explosion process by combusting all of our injected fuel at the correct timing sequence. This is accomplished by injecting only vaporous fuel which will produce ~3X the power we now get. Another way to state this is, for the same power that we now get from a gasoline engine, if we burned the fuel correctly, we would only need 1/3 the fuel consumption to get 3X the current MPG.

Trip Gauge

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could get an inexpensive (used is ok) trip gauge to tell me real time MPG in my car. I didn't see much on ebay, and am not interested in spending $169 on a new one. I'm not sure the year of my Ford Taurus, but I can check tomorrow. Thanks!

Possible to Double MPG With Fuel Additives?

Is it really possible to increase your gas mileage with simple solutions? Maybe the oil industry really is trying to keep a tight lid on this whole industry....

I volunteer to gather eyewitness info on water into hydrogen.

I'm a beginning engineering student and my dad is also an engineer. He is pretty skeptical and he recently told me of someone he knows who is using electrolysis to get better gas mileage in a Toyota pickup. I'm not sure, but it seems he is using secondary voltage to power the split and then burning it. He claims 60 mpg. If you guys would like to give me a series of questions/tests, I would love to go to my hometown and ask/perform them, then report back. Any takers?

Students Build Car that Gets 2752.3 MPG

Students at Cal Poly have made a car that gets 2752.3 mpg. It has three wheels and moves one person along at just 30 mph, but it can drive most of the way across the U.S. on one gallon of gas. "The 96 pound car has three wheels, a drag coefficient of 0.12, a top speed of 30 MPH, and a modified 3 horsepower Honda 50cc four-stroke engine. It originally clocked in at 861 MPG and has been continuously tweaked to achieve the mileage we see today." Link

Common problems with 1985 VW golf diesels? Answered

Hello Instructables community! The time has come for me to terrorize the streets with my driving skillz! (I say "Skillz" jokingly) I'm looking for a car, and found a good condition 1985 VW Golf Diesel on Craigslist. The owner says it gets 42-47mpg, and, being an old diesel I believe it. But I was wondering if there are any common problems with Golfs of that age? Anything I should be worried about when buying one? Thank you in advance!

Anyone tried pumping cold water through the heater core on a non-A/C car as an alternative to A/C?

My idea is that during the summer months, the heater core could be bypassed of hot coolant with a section of copper pipe. With a cooler in the trunk filled with ice-water, containing a 12V pump/sump set-up, cold water could then be ran through the heater core. If the core is cold, and air is being pushed through it, the air would thus be cooled off before being pushed through the factory vents. The fist of only two issues I can see, is that the blown air may be hot air from the engine bay, thus harder to cool off. However, my vehicle has a feature that 'recycles' the air from inside my cabin as apposed to bringing in outside air. This might rule out the concern of cooling hot air. The second issue would be the possibility that the material which the heater core is comprised (probably aluminum) and/or its seams/welds may not hold up under such cold conditions, as it is designed for hot coolant to pass through. However, cars have cold coolant for several minutes on start-up in the winter, and many people crank the heater long before the coolant is warm, thus the core probably could withstand the cold exposure. I've never asked a question on here before. I'm not sure what I hope o gain from doing so. But if you have tried this or just have 2 cents to add... please, share. Thanks.

Car runs along at 376.59 mpg and gets a Guinness World Record

The funny thing is that this happened 35 years ago and the car that did it was from 1959. It's not exactly a consumer vehicle, but still impressive.Some info: - the vehicle was a 1959 Opel T-1 - interior completely stripped except for a plastic seat for the driver - top was chopped to lose drag - super-hard low-friction tires used - was driven at 30 mph - chain drive used to lose weight - the fuel line was insulated and heated so the gasoline entered the combustion chambers as lean vapor link

Can you watch videos or hear music while converting videos, or will it ruin the audio for the video?

The converting video is either ging to be MP4 or MPG format so i was just wondering if hearing music or watching youtube videos will affect the audio for either format?

I really want to get a cheap scooter or moped... Mainly because most get around 100 mpg!!! But idk where to get one that cheap. All of the ones ive seen on craiglist and such are newer and well over a thousand which, in my financial state now is just too much. Any suggesestions on where i could get one?thanks!

Mad Max your ride + ROAD TRIP!! = Wasteland Weekend

Hey guys! This September I plan to drive from the Austin Texas area to California City, California for Wasteland Weekend, a big old Mad Max / Fallout / PAW styled bash in the desert. I'm currently going for a Lone Ranger meets Zorro in a Mad Max car look to my costume, but now my attention turns to my car, and my chariot of carnage: 1990 Chevrolet Corvette. What's some cool non permanent stuff I can do to my car? It is fiberglass, so unfortunately magnets won't stick. The car already has faded, shoddy grey paint, so that is a plus. Also, any general road tripping advice? it's about 3k miles round trip. at highway cruise I average 27 mpg, but I'm making my fuel consumption estimates on 20 mpg.

Hybrid cars - uphill strategies

I own a hybrid car (Honda Insight 2nd generation - CVT) and I'm happy with the fuel economy (4.3 L/100 Km  --  54,7 MPG),  but I think there is still room for improvement. My house is on top of a hill and when I get home I have to climb steep slopes. The batteries go low and the forced regeneration kicks in. (The car uses the gas engine to recharge the batteries.) When I get home the batteries are almost fully charged. The next trip is, of course, downhill and the high state of charge prevents me from getting the maximum advantage of regenerative braking. (Put in other words: I'm burning gasoline uphill to recharge the batteries that I could charge for free driving downhill...) How could I avoid/reduce forced regeneration? What strategies do you use driving uphill? Thanks

Grass bioreactor Answered

Hi, I tried building a grass bioreactor out of a 5 gallon bucket. I filled the bucket all the way to the top with grass and filled it with some water, closed it up, and then I let it set for 3 days. I used a lighter to try to to burn the gas, but all I saw was the lighter burning as usual. I am trying to get a reasonable amount of flammable gas for boosting car mpg.

I have a bunch of MTS files (Sony's special HD video format), and I need to convert them to MPGs or MOVs so I can edit them. At the very least I need to be able to burn them to a viewable DVD. A friend suggested I get the DivX converter, but that only allowed me to convert the files to DivX files which I can only watch on the DivX player. Help!!!!!

Hyper-mile!

I'm afraid you're going to hear more than a few bits of money-saving advice from me! I'm a self-proclaimed Queen of Tightwaddery! We've been honing our skills at our house since I quit my job 3 years ago. I was determined to be a stay-at-home mom, and discovered that by being careful, I could save as much as I was bringing home, and be happier doing it! Hypermiling is one way we save money. The term "hypermiling" is new to us - we read about it in Reader's Digest a few months back. Some hypermilers go crazy and take risks. In our house, we've chosen a few things we can do to improve gas mileage without risking our lives or ticking off other drivers. Here are a few that anyone can do:1. Watch your speed. Driving 75 on the freeway might be legal, but it uses a lot more gas. Keeping it to 65 (or better yet, 60) can save 2-3 miles per gallon or more.2. Avoid accelerations and braking. While this might sound like using cruise control, it goes beyond that. You want to make your speed changes gradually, a) allowing your vehicle to stay in the highest gear possible when accelerating (lower rpms), and b) taking advantage of momentum (coast, don't brake, whenever possible). So if you see a stop sign ahead, stop accelerating sooner and coast. Perfection would mean coasting to a stop without needing the brake (but consideration for drivers behind you usually prohibits this!). See how close you can come! When accelerating, do it gradually, allowing your vehicle to shift earlier (let up on the gas a little to encourage the shift). If you see a slow-down or big curve ahead, ease up and leave room so you don't have to hit the brakes.3. Get the lead out - of your vehicle, that is. I improved the gas mileage on my van about 1-2 mpg by taking out the back two (unused) seats! Don't use your vehicle as a storage unit!4. Check your tires. Under-inflated tires will cost you a mile or two per gallon. There are lots more ways to improve your mileage and save money. Google "hypermile" or "ecomodder" and learn specific things you can do with your make and model of vehicle.Do the math - you might be surprised how much you can save. Here's an example, using a 20 gallon gas tank and 20 MPG:You can drive around looking to save 10 cents a gallon on gas. Assuming you find cheaper gas without burning a lot of it while looking, you'll save $2.00 on a fill up. OR you can apply a few of the principles listed above. I improved my van's gas mileage doing only those things by about 5 mpg. 5mpg x 20 gallons is 100 extra miles I can go on a tank of gas. At 20 mpg, that's a 5 gallon savings - at $3/gallon, that's $15 per fill. (That's like finding gas 75 cents per gallon cheaper!) How many times do you fill in a year? You do your own math and see the savings! My husband drives a lot and is squeezing 41-44 mpg from his car rated for about 33 mpg. With all his driving, he figures he's saved about $175 per month over the last 3 months.All this hypermiling has made us very aware of how much driving a mile costs. Now we look at every trip out in dollars and cents. If you had to pay $2 to run to the store and back, would you still do it? (If you're going for a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs, tack the $2 in gas onto that item - is it worth it?) We've started combining trips, planning ahead to avoid extra trips out, carpooling, using the car instead of the van when we can, etc, etc, etc.Awareness is the first step. Try it and see!

how to save energy

Do you want to learn how to go green or save enrgy. Well your at the right place. To start try by buying solar lamps and make a clothesline washers and dryers use a ton of energy. If you are looking for a car you should think about a priuis hybrid. They get up to 60 mpg!!!! Also turn lights off if not being used. always turn ff the tv and computer when gone or not using it may be a hassle for some people so if you have a desktop at least turn off the screen. please comment

Chevrolet Astro / Safari owners opinions sought plz.

Hi guys, Im thinking of getting an Astro or Safari and just wanted to know what other owners out there in Instructables Land thought of them. We get a few imports over here in the UK either directly from the Sates or via Japan, they typically have low mileage, if it is to be believed! Just wanted to know if there was a particular year to avoid? Im tempted to go for an AWD for towing and getting out of winter difficulties. Is  the AWD reliable? Ok so they are thirsty, but I can cut costs (and mpg) by converting to LPG. Are they easy to work on? There'a lot of light bulbs to change in the interior! Not much room under the 'dog house' by the look of it.... Any help extremely appreciated :) Cheers! Bosh

Ethanol-fueled Hummer - E85 H2

Do you think the people who designed this had some sort of irony-deflecting helmets?Hummer will offer E85-compatible flexfuel engines on both the H2 and H2 SUT starting for model year 2009, and by 2010, all Hummer models will be flexfuel-compatible. We'd have to put a few hundred miles on a test rig to say for certain, but based on our experiences with (a) Hummers and (b) ethanol rigs, we'd wager that the 2009 Hummer H2 E85 may well deliver the absolute worst fuel economy of any vehicle based off a light-duty truck chassis sold in the US in the last 20 years. Our guess: 11 mpg highway, 8 city. Going downhill. My last oil change interval was a tad over 10K miles -- and the lab report indicated my oil was still good - everything was good except a slightly high Cu level. Not in the danger zone, but something to watch. My point is... Don't give me any crap about 3K miles - I like my oil films established and don't need constant oil changes screwing that up -- that's why I pay for oil analysis (besides, it comes out cheaper in the end anyway).

Fuel economy of the world's longest in-service ship

The Emma Maersk is the second longest ship in the world, and the longest currently in service. It's so large, it looks photoshopped into any picture it appears. Driving such a large ship requires a lot of power. From Wikipedia:The Emma Maersk is powered by a Wartsila-Sulzer 14RTFLEX96-C engine, currently the world's largest single diesel unit, weighing 2,300 tons and capable of 109,000 horsepower (82 MW). The ship has several features to protect the environment. This includes recycling the exhaust, mixed with fresh air, back into the engine for reuse. This not only increases efficiency by as much as 12% but also reduces engine emissions. Instead of biocides, used by much of the industry to keep barnacles off of the hull, a special silicone-based paint is used. This increases the ship's efficiency by reducing drag while also protecting the ocean from biocides that may leak. The silicone paint covering the part of the hull below the waterline is credited for lowering the water drag enough to save 1200 tons of fuel per year.We started talking about energy consumption after watching a practice version of Saul's upcoming E-Tech Keynote, Energy Literacy, and Dave Culp of Kiteship and Speed Sailing did a back-of-the-envelope MPG calculation for this ship:A few more facts about Emma Maersk:Running at her rated 80 Mw, her main engines burn 14 tons of residual fuel each hour. Annually, that's 97,400 tons of fuel. Her auxiliaries, delivering their full 30 Mw, burn an additional 6.6 tons/hour, for a total fuel burn of 20.6 tons/hour. Given 290 steaming days/year (80% capacity factor, which is conservative), this yields a total annual usage of 143,400 tons or about $64.5 million in annual fuel costs.Burning 20.6 tons/hour = 6724 gals/hour. At 31 kts/hour, this equals .0046 nautical miles/gallon. Collaboration: Underbody and wheel Fairings WITH Boat Tail for a MkIV Volkswagen Jetta (and possibly Golf)

The underside of your typical car will not have any skin/covering -- the outer skin of your car is known as a fairing and that is how I'll refer to it from this point forward ;) These open crevasses etc. create a great deal of drag force and turbulence to high speed air. This added drag is significant enough to warrant some manufacturers to install aluminum plates covering the entire undercarriage (which add weight).My big project over the next few months will be prototyping a partial fairing for the underside of my car. Additionally, I will be constructing wheel fairings for all four wheels an begin construction of a boat tail (likely in a Kammback Style. I am open to feedback, suggestions and comments of any type - that is why I'm posting here and will be updating my progress.This is a tentative list of things that need to be done - feel free to add.1.
