Remelting Plastics

Has anyone experienced remelting plastics from around the house/recycling bin in order to cast objects? After reading about the backyardfoundry for aluminun and such, I realized that I'm much more interested in plastic and casting plastic parts and art things. Also, it could be cheap and plentiful. I have the moldmaking knowledge for aluminun and bronze but want a plastic medium for the casting material so I can work at home/backyard without the foundry equipment.

Plastic Cannon??

Hi, I'm currently in Year 10 and we have been assigned to make a USB lamp. Now, I'm fine with the assignment only I cannot think of how to shape my idea realistically. I wanted to make a cannon shape, with a sphere like bottom before it curves into a thin neck. However, I don't know how to make the plastic bend into the sphere like shape. It's really difficult and I'll include a picture of my idea if it helps!

I work at a BSA summer camp each year teaching archery and a little class about things not to bother while at camp. I have to find these bugs/spiders each year and catch them at some risk. I would like to have a perm. display for them to look at with out having to worry about me or them getting bit. I have did a search for said bugs on line but found nothing. Does anyone know how to use the liquid plastic to encase bugs? Please email me at karm1674@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Plastic Cases

I wanted to know what the best way to open a screw-less plastic case is. I am trying to open an ac-dc wall adapter for a project. The thing seems to be glued firmly shut. The last time I tried this with a different adapter I had to take a 20 pound weight and smash it (mostly out of frustration), which did not end well for the case or the parts inside. Both need to be intact.

Solder with plastic?

I have been soldering veeeery small devices lately and I wanted to ask the community if there are any other cheap options such as a voltage-conductive polymer (with good conductivity), I know that it may not be possible for it to have the same characteristics but soldering with glue would be so much easier, I may sound silly but it may exist already... I found this: "silver conductive epoxy" my question still lingers: Is there a true solder replacement?

Plastic Vehicle Body

Hey, people. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask questions about this sort of thing and I can't find anything on the web on the subject. I guess not too many people want to build a vehicle body from scratch. Anyhow, here's my situation. I have a large mobility scooter which I would like to transform into something nice for a Halloween parade. I can't do anything too fancy or professional looking because I don't have the resources for something like that. What I think I'll do is build a frame over which I'd bolt sheets of plastic that are cut in particular forms. Then I'd paint the whole thing with spray paint and touch up with an airbrush. What I need to know is which materials to use. There are all sorts of plastic out there. I won't be forming anything with heat, so at best I'll only need plastic that's not too thick and has a good surface for painting. Also, I don't know what to use for the frame. If you don't know about the materials, any sort of advice or encouragement would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Customizing/personalizing plastic?

Giant Plastic Cup

Hey all, I couldn't find anyone who sells these on the Internet so I'd like to find the best way to make them. The cups would be about 2ft tall, and would look just like a plastic cup used at beer parties. I'm throwing my buddy his bachelor party and this would be hilarious! I was thinking maybe carving half the cup out of a Styrofoam block then, laying fiberglass in it. Then gluing the two pieces together. I'm not sure about drinking out of a fiberglass cup though. Thoughts on building this, or a link where I could buy something like this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Electronics Plastic housing

"1207" & "1208" The arrow is pointing to "1207" *There is a circle with an arrow inside and the numbers 0-9 on the outside. The arrow is pointing to "4" *There is a circle with an arrow inside and the numbers 0-3 on the outside. The arrow is pointing to "0" *There is a circle with an arrow inside and the letters A-H on the outside. The arrow is pointing to "B" *There are also two charts that has letters on the left and what looks like names of pigment colors on the right column. Some of the right side fields are blank. *There is another chart with "00", "99", and "98" on the y-axis and the numbers 1-9, 0, and the letters "N" and "D" on the x-axis. There are two markings - one at the intersection of "99" and "1" and another at "99" and "2". Does anybody know what these markings mean? I've seen similar markings on other bits of plastic electronic housing. I imagine that they explain the material that the housing is made of , but what do they mean? Anybody know? Have any ideas?

Plastic Optic Fiber

Hi, I made a lot of research in order to find some plastic optic fiber in europe, and I finaly add to buy some full rolls of the one I liked. It it PMMA fiber with 0.3dB/m light loss, it polish well, and when use with long length, gives a sligher yellow / green color to the light (noticeable on white light, but really lower than the other I've tryed). If someone need some, I can make a kit with : -27 meters of 0.75mm diameter -15 meters of 1.00mm diameter - 7 meters of 1.50mm diameter I think thati ncluding shipping to anywhere I can send it for tens euros. If someone is interested, let me know and I will check shipping price and paypal fees. Regards, tReg.

Glueing Plastics Together? Answered

When I say plastics, I mean more specifically, LEGOs. I'm glueing them together because I'm trying to make LEGO headphones, so I would need something permanent. I've heard people using cyanoacrylates and clear plumbing glue (anyone heard of Oatey?) I thought about using hot glue, but I'm not sure if that would give me the bond that I'm looking for. Would Gorilla Glue work too? Or would it be a bit of an overkill? I simply need a glue that will hold the LEGOs through enough wear-and-tear to last, and no discolouring of the pieces. And when I glue, should I glue the sides of the pieces together, or put glue around the dotted studs on the tops of the bricks? Any other glues or advice that you could enlighten me with would be greatly appreciated. :)

Plastic to plastic: "contact adhesive" or two-part epoxy?

Plastic to plastic: "contact adhesive" or two-part epoxy? What are the pros and cons of each? I need to glue two different types of plastic together, and I'm not sure if I should use "contact adhesive" or two-part epoxy. Or, I could use contact adhesive on the facing surfaces, let it cure, and then add epoxy around the edges where the parts join. I'm not exactly sure what types of plastics these are. So far the contact adhesive seem to be curing well and I'm hopeful that two-part epoxy will also work well. I'm building a mount to hold a camera to a bicycle (and plan to publish a how-to when it's done), so it will need to be strong, resistant to vibration and weather, and strong. I really don't want to drop the camera: It's close enough to a wheel that a tether could cause more immediate problems than letting the camera hit the ground. Thanks! Update: Both the contact adhesive and epoxy (separately) seem to be holding the test pieces well. It'll be another 18+ hours before I really start yanking on them but it seems like either type of adhesive would be decent. Of course, I want more than decent; I want excellent!

Using Plastic Bottles and Plastic Containers for Gardening (food) is it safe?

This is more of an answer than a question, well actually a starting point for you do to do your own research. I was just about to start using 2 liter plastic soda bottles and plastic tubs (hydroponics) for my garden. Then I began to wonder about BPA effects. As much as I wanted to use these and recycle, it doesn't look wise. In addition to all the toxic effects of BPA, the out gasing increases with the temperature. ... ie Harvest time over 100 degs and out gasing right into root structure. Cutting or denting plastic also increases the out gasing. Please do your own research about: 1) diseases linked to BPA, especially women 2) how the out gasing increasing with temp increase Please understand I am not here to scare you, but rather to incourage you to do the research

How to smoothly cut plastic?

I did a home automation project and I even fabricated PCB. I got a plastic box for encasing my PCB. The plastic box needs to be cut in two places to give the power chord and connection to the relays. I had soldering iron so I beat it up to a straight rod and tried to cut some plastic boxes that were lying around in my home. the heat was too much and even though the cut was somewhat accurate the heat caused the surrounding plastic to eventually melt and it became ugly. Any idea how I can cut the plastic smoothly?
