Well, I just wanna make a forum topic for the heck of it, and to inform people that I'm not dead. So, what are your most prized possessions? Mine would have to be: - My many weapons (If I have to choose, then my heirloom Katana sword and my oh-so-very-handy 26 inch extendable ASP Baton) - My Nintendo DS, PSP, PS2, PS3, Wii - My 'school sucks like a b****' T-shirts So, what are your prized possessions?

Today, upon waking up, I started my computer as usual. Unfortunately, it had a black screen with white letters, blah blah blah, a problem occurred and your computer shut down to save files. It gave me a few options like if the power went out, etc. click proceed as usual, or something like that. Anyway, once I got to my desktop, I hear this "BEEP" maybe more of a click. Anyway I figured that I was holding down to many keys at once, because that makes a specific sound. Nope. So I continue doing my routine, login to AIM, start Firefox, load iTunes. Then I hear it again. I don't notice it much until it happens the third time. Thats when I decide to count intervals between beeps. Roughly 35-36 seconds between beeps. Every. Time. O_o I figure, since my speakers are on, I'll turn them off. Nope. Nothing. Still the dreaded beep. I've found that its coming from my computer tower.. Sooooo, I'm asking the community for some help, anything I can do to stop this beep? Its a really aggressive sounding thing. Almost angry..

Dear all, first of all, hello to all of you, I'm new to this site, but I've already seen some wonderful things on here, and they are a true inspiration source for the projects I'm working on during my study as an Industrial Designer.I've got a question about a concept of mine, which I will explain briefly to give you an understanding of what I'm trying to create:When playing a sport, let's take football (by which I mean soccer) there's a ball. My idea is to make the ball represent the ball possession (or actually the ball passing between players) of the teams. For instance, you have a blue and a red team, and what I want to do is make the ball color almost entirely blue if the blue team is in ball possession all the time. This way people will be more stimulated to play with eachother, passing the ball to eachother instead of scoring goals individually. The way I want the ball to change color, is by making it detect when it's being kicked, by a football shoe (which has to have some implemented technology as well). So everytime it's being passed from one player to another of the same team, the ball will color more blue or red. I need some help with the technology as I'm totally new to this aspect, 1. How to make the ball change colors? (LED's, or optical fiber: http://www.imtech.nl/SiteContent/EUPortal/Images/ImtechNV/newsroom/succes/17%20glasvezel.jpg, or any other suggestions?)2.How to make the ball communicate with the shoes? One thing I've been looking into is RFID - chips/reader, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaNnOHSJ-cQ, and then make the RFID-chips with a very limited range, so that only when the ball (with the reader) is close enough, the reader will detect the chip. But this seems like a last option, and I actually want something better. What I basically want is that when the shoe and the ball touch eachother, the coloring will happen. The requirements are that the shoes, must contain unique information so that the ball will know on what team that shoe is, another thing is that it can't be fragile, as the ball will be kicked by the shoe. Now as I'm fairly new to technology, I don't expect to build something with the best technology possible. As I have to write a final report, I will just present the technology idea in it. But it would be great if I could actually show an interactive prototype version of my concept. Therefore, if you have any suggestions, please write down the best possible way to create this, and a probably less perfect way that I can demonstrate (I'm willing to learn a lot over the next few weeks). Thanks in advance!

Ultimate Frisbee rules run to twenty pages, so I came up with this for my classes. I thought I'd share it, but I couldn't see the point in posting an Instructable when my school's rules require written permission from every parent involved before pictures of kids go online, so I just took advantage of Rachel fixing the topic-posting bug. Indoor Ultimate Frisbee Lite (“Indoor Lite”) 1. The play's the thing: all players and observers must keep to The Spirit Of The Game. Teams shoukd self-referee. If any dispute requires a decision by a bystander or observer, that decision is binding. 2. The game may be played with and disc agreed upon by both team captains. 3. Teams of up to 8, with a maximum of 5 players on the field. 4. The game continues for either an agreed length of time, or to an agreed score (for example, “first to five”). 5. Before play, team captains agree the end zones and playing field, and choose ends to defend. An indoor game has no “out of bounds”, and play continues as normal if the disc bounces off walls, ceiling or fixtures in the room. 6. When the opposing team gains possession of the disc, it is called a turnover. 7. Ultimate is non-contact sport – intentional obstruction of, or contact with another player will result in a turnover. If a turnover is the result of a rule-break, the disc is handed to the nearest opposing player. 8. At the start of play, each team gathers in their end zone. One captain throws the disc towards the opposing team. Nobody may enter the playing field until the disc passes the half-way mark. 9. A point is scored when the disc is caught in (or above) the opposing team's end zone. 10. After a point is scored, all players return to their own end-zone, and the player who caught the disc to score the point throws the disc to re-start the game. 11. A player in possession of the disc may not move, but may pivot on one foot. “Travelling” results in a turnover. 12. The player in possession of the disc must throw the disc within five seconds – any near-by player may count to five out loud. Holding the disc past five seconds is a turnover. 13. If the disc hits the ground, possession passes to whichever team did not touch it last – if team A throws it and nobody catches it, team B gain possession. If team A throw the disc, team B block its flight and it then hits the ground, then team A regains possession. If team A throw the disc, but team B catch the disc in the air, team B gains possession and play continues. 14. If two players catch the disc, whoever caught it first gains possession. If two players catch the disc simultaneously, a single round of rock, paper, scissors determines possession. 15. Unlimited substitutions may be made after any point is scored. House Rules. Because Indoor Lite can be played in a wide range of venues, typically school gyms or halls, some “house rules” may be developed, such as “if the disc goes through the basket ball hoop, that's a point as well” or “if the disc falls behind the vaulting horse, possession turns over and everybody goes back to their ends to start play again”. Before play begins, any new or visiting players must be made aware of the house rules. I also blogged this.

Both the camera and monitor have their own microphones and speakers (low quality), with the camera speaker being the louder one. Now my question is what do with it?

Would a device that could specificly destroy a single person, anywhere on the planet without fail, be a good or a bad thing (in cases where every nation/state/etc possessed this device, or where only one group would have this device). What about if it could only be used once per year? The answer may seem obvious at first, but personaly, i'm disinclined to admit to any answer that feels intuitive when it comes to a question which could so easily act as a substrate for pre-existing personal idealogy and agenda. but, yeah, just curious what people might think.

Hi, Moved over to the UK from the US a couple of months ago and my fiancee has brought with her a 110V tea-steeper with her. Apparently it possesses magical properties that cannot be reproduced by other local appliances. It will blow out the fuse in a 500-watt transformer, which is the largest that I have. My question is, why are these things so expensive? I have very limited knowledge about them, but from what I do know they don't seem that complex. Some of the higher wattage transformers are the same price as a netbook computer! What is in them that costs so much? Also, can you make your own? Thanks -Andrew

Electric motors are more of the free floating bearing type than the gas motors friction bearing type not only that the electric motor can also replenish its power source but a gas motor cannot produce more gas only more heat requiring more complex sub- systems to allow it to operate. to modify the electric motor is inexpensive by its windings and magnet placing as opposed to a gas motors materials weight and shapes change performance thats why so many differnent engines are available i think what matters most is the coolness factor we crave for ourselves to possess. I've been noticing a growing number of home and traditional remedies appearing. I don't doubt that some of them might have some slight benefit. But on the other hand, some are utterly worthless and a waste of time and money. I have a concern that less knowledgeable people may assume that because a remedy is listed here that it is, in fact, a reliable means of alleviating whatever ill they possess. I would like to see a flag/banner for all such instructables noting that the medical claims made in the instructable are entirely anecdotal and have mostly likely never been examined by any medical researchers. I'm not against the use of traditional remedies. I simply don't want someone to forego treatment by a physician on the basis of what they've just read here.

I understand that most proof-of-concept hydrogen fuel cells on instructables use platinum wire. Can I use silver-coated wire in place of it, or rather, just any wire? Platinum wires aren't exactly readily available here in the Philippines, and I just want a good proof-of-concept hydrogen fuel cell that's cheap to produce. The silver-coated wire I'm referring to appears to be some sort of jewelry wire. I'm also wondering as to why most people would use platinum wire (is there a special property platinum possesses that other metals don't?). If I can't use platinum wire, then what can I use? Something preferably cheap and over-the-counter.

On a trip to NY, I called Next New Networks and told them how I was a huge fan of Indy Mogul and would love to take a tour of the offices. I came in the next day and went to the floor that NNN was located on. My dad and I were greeted by the secretary and the co-producer, Ryan Nugent, led us to all the rooms of Indy Mogul, the green screen, the makeup vanity, the wall of props in which all of the props were displayed on the wall starting at the jetpack build. The highlight was when I was led into the room where Erik hosts the show and he was standing right there, I almost fell over! We talked about the show, I tried on the wolverine claws, and spun the wheel of prosperity! Erik also autographed a piece of paper and left me a note. On my way out, I was given an exclusive poster that only a few people are in possession of. It was the greatest day of my teenage life!

However, all I have is the LCD, and a total lack of knowledge where to begin with such a project. I understand I need some device to both fetch the tweets (Or RSS articles) and also to power and drive the LCD. Does such a piece of kit already exist? Or will this need to be a totally custom bit of work? p.s. I can't get any further information on the LCD at this moment in time, however if it's required / relevant, I can provide details and/or pictures as required.

Greetings all, I've made two of the coolest costumes (cool to me anyway) in the last five weeks, it was an inspiration that rose of it's own and I'm not really sure why or how they came to me: https://www.instructables.com/id/Constructing-Anubis/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Constructing-Bastet/ We really had no goal in doing those other than to share them. We entered them into some contests here, because if we win, I have a very good friend who is in dire need of a decent computer - but that is another story. Doing a thing for a specific goal robs it of all it's power. :-) We just returned from Halloween night and another tour of the Gaslamp in downtown San Diego, met with photo-op stops every five feet and "10-signs" and applause at all the outdoor restaurants. (It's traditional at Halloween that when you're seated at outdoor restaurants, they give you signs with 1-10 on them to wave at passing costumes, a Gaslamp Halloween Olympics of sorts.) We've had SO much fun sharing these. It's been one of our highlight experiences this year. Just the reactions from people, young and old, were priceless. However. Halloween is over. My wife is not thrilled about saving them for next year, it's like watching Dukes of Hazzard reruns. We'll need a new discovery. So . . . what would you do with these? You might think "keep them" but we have gone through some major changes in recent years, one of them a down-sizing of gargantuan proportions that required giving away or selling most of everything we own. As we did so, rather than the loss one might expect, we were more and more aware of how liberating this was, how free we became as we unbound ourselves from possessions. We vowed never to begin amassing possessions again, and this would be a dangerous first step in that direction. We thought about offering them for sale to Egyptian themed enterprises, such as the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles, but that's just one idea. What do you do with your creations that obviously spark some awareness in those that experience them? Thanks for reading. Not sure what to do.

Hello everybody! I'm in the process of building a reiteration of a series of optical toys (like this one, or these) with motor, stroboscopes and little music system. The thing is their discs measure about 1 m (like 3,2 feets) and one of them (praxinoscope) is a heavy one due to the mirrors it possess (see photo [it isn't it's actual state]) so I created a metal base for it with a tube, three metal angles as legs and washing machine 115v ~60hz 70W 250VAC single phase motor soldered on (with capacitor), so the disc sits on top of the motor, and the thing is that after an hour of so of being tested on continuous duty it stopped and started to smell like burnt. What could the problem be? Could it be a design problem since the motor has all that weight on top? Should I have used gears and pulleys? How can I make it last longer without it being to complex? If someone can help or has some ideas I'd appreciate it , thanks in advance! Benkos M. G.

This is not a scan of the original book, but the original book converted to text with OCR, and strictly proof read with QC controls. Thus the charts, formulas can be copied and pasted into something else. www.gutenberg.org/etext/27257 ELECTRICITY FOR THE FARM LIGHT, HEAT AND POWER BY INEXPENSIVE METHODS FROM THE WATER WHEEL OR FARM ENGINE BY FREDERICK IRVING ANDERSON AUTHOR OF "THE FARMER OF TO-MORROW," ETC., ETC. New York THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1915 PREFACE This book is designed primarily to give the farmer a practical working knowledge of electricity for use a slight, heat, and power on the farm. The electric generator, the dynamo, is explained in detail; and there are chapters on electric transmission and house-wiring, by which the farm mechanic is enabled to install his own plant without the aid and expense of an expert. With modern appliances, within the means of the average farmer, the generation of electricity, with its unique conveniences, becomes automatic, provided some dependable source of power is to be had—such as a water wheel, gasoline (or other form of internal combustion) engine, or the ordinary windmill. The water wheel is the ideal prime mover for the dynamo in isolated plants. Since water-power is running to waste on tens of thousands of our farms throughout the country, several chapters are devoted to this phase of the subject: these include descriptions and working diagrams of weirs and other simple devices for measuring the flow of streams; there are tables and formulas by which any one, with a knowledge of simple arithmetic, may determine the power to be had from falling water under given conditions; and in addition, there are diagrams showing in general the method of construction of dams, bulkheads, races, flumes, etc., from materials usually to be found on a farm. The tiny unconsidered brook that waters the farm pasture frequently possesses power enough to supply the farmstead with clean, cool, safe light in place of the dangerous, inconvenient oil lamp; a small stream capable of developing from twenty-five to fifty horsepower will supply a farmer (at practically no expense beyond the original cost of installation) not only with light, but with power for even the heavier farm operations, as threshing; and in addition will do the washing, ironing, and cooking, and at the same time keep the house warm in the coldest weather. Less than one horsepower of energy will light the farmstead; less than five horsepower of energy will provide light and small power, and take the drudgery out of the kitchen. For those not fortunate enough to possess water-power which can be developed, there are chapters on the use of the farm gasoline engine and windmill, in connection with the modern storage battery, as sources of electric current. www.gutenberg.org/etext/27257

I am constructing an actual working version of the locket from The Illusionist. All of the ones that I have seen done try to make a different mechanism than is "displayed" in the movie, but none of them do it right, in my opinion. It has to be quite small, and it has to be intricate. I have come up with just the mechanism so that the two halves can rotate and slide across the same axis, just like in the movie, but in order to get it to work properly, the dimensions need to be precise, sturdy, and retain fluid movement. This I cannot do with wood. as small as these pieces need to be, plastic is the only medium I can use and still be exact, and a 3D printer is the only thing I can think of that will easily achieve this. The problem is that I do not possess one of these printers, and hence need your help! I also will be needing to work with you to design the pieces on the software side of the printer. I have it all in my noggin, guys, please help me bring this to fruition! Thank you! Ged

I was wondering if anyone knew of any HD webcams that could be used as a standalone camera without the computer, or ones that could be modified for such a purpose. I was going to use a standard Sony digital camera, but the key issue there is that glass elements are absorbent in the short IR range, and so kill most of the effect. One element is not that bad, but when you have the 8-10 of varying thickness in the camera's zoom lens assembly, you lose a lot of IR light. I need the IR effect for demonstration - for example, under IR light, veins and vessels in your hand become a lot more visible, as well as the ability to perceive "heat" becomes a lot more capable. If anyone could either help point out a HD webcam that would work or help me make a standard "cure-all" lens it would be extremely helpful. By cure-all I mean the lenses you find on cameras such as disposable 35mms, ones that either don't have any glass in them or only possess one element and have a focus range of roughly a foot and a half to infinity.

Hello, I am on an FTC robotics team, and often robots are required to lift/reach objects. This year, a challenge was to reach up and grab onto a pullup bar; the robot then completed a pullup. One common method this year was to use a tape measure; the tape measure was unwound using a motor, remained rigid due to standout, and was then wound up, lifting the robot in the process. I am now in the offseason and I want to improve on this design. I found that a very similar mechanism to the tape measure has been used for extendable antennas on spacecraft. I would like to create a similar mechanism. The main difference between the tape measure and the STEM mechanism is that the STEM extends a tube. The tube is rolled from a sprung piece of metal. The piece that I am looking for is a material that could be flattened, but would retain its tubular shape like on the STEM. Does anyone know of any types of pipe or tubing that could be cut lengthwise and possess this springy characteristic? Is there anyway to create a material like this? Thanks, icecats

Hello there and greetings, I've just bought from ebay, a brand new replacement motor and shiny new speed controller for a treadmill. The motor is a PM DC cont. duty, 2.5hp @ 230VDC, 9.5Amps. It has 4 wires coming out of it, Red, Black (connected to the brushes on the motor), and two blue&white; wires which are connected together using spade connectors. The speed controller board is fiited inside an aluminium heat sink case. It has 7 male spade connectors protruding and they are labelled: LG1: Blue..........(AC1) LG2: White........(AC2) LG3: ..................(Earth Ground) CHOKE: LG4 LG5 AC MOTOR: LG6: Red..........(A+) LG7: Black........(A-) I'm afraid i don't possess the know-how although i'm quite handy and have some faded kowledge of electrics and electronics but i'm afraid im not too sure how to hook it up. Also could someone tell me what kind of power supply i need for this setup. Much appreciated and many thanks in advance.
