If you could have another go at life, what would you do differently?

It's been a toughweek for me, people. School started a week ago and something strange happened. Friends have been abandoning me one by one, and everyone acted soulless in front of me. It seemed like everyone was unhappy with somehing. Then i started to realize that everyone was unhappy with me. This morning, i received messages from my friends saying why they hate me. Apparently i was an arrogant little ****. My friends were trying to deal with my arrogance for too long, and they couldn't take it anymore. I then logged on to instructables, yet having more controversy on my 'ibles. If you want to know why i am arrogant, I was considered to be a 'perfect kid'. I have a 3.8 gpa in high school now, and i am taking 4 AP classes, and one honors. I also made varsity tennis and JV basketball in freshman year, so i was considered good at sports (not bragging). I also won 3 karate sparring tournaments, which raised my self confidence even more higher, to the point where i almost became a kanye west duplicate. I was incredibly egotistical and happy with my self, because i was good at almost everything. I felt as though i was on top of everyone else, and i have always tried to maintain that position. But that happiness vanished during this week. Even in my first couple of 'ibles, i was overhappy and arrogant, and i used to demand respect and recognition. But i later realized that this wasn't right. I have made my mistakes of being an arrogant D-bag, and i am introducing the new me: a still happy person who doesn't cross the line towards arrogance. - IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Everyone has done bad things and made mistakes. If you haven't done bad things, you are a liar. Ask yourself this: How many times have you cheated on anything? Did you steal from anyone (even something worth a penny)? How many times have you lied to anyone? How many times have you broken the rules of your household, school, or anywhere else? There are many questions i can ask, but i will stop right here. We all make mistakes, but you are a good person as long as you LEARN from your mistake. I have learned from my bad things i have done in the past. I will be more mature and still maintain above a 3.8 gpa and still do my sports, but i will change my attitude and i won't be so arrogant and immature. This is a new me.

About a year ago I got started in acrylic paint pouring. At the time I had decided to paint over some of them but I regret this now and wish to removed the painting I have done over them. The original paint pours were sealed with a spray on clear coating but not the painting that I did over them. Is there any way I can remove the over painting without damaging the original paint pours? Any recommendations for solvents/tools or experience with this? Thanks for your feedback!

EDIT: Cyclone's instructable is complete.https://www.instructables.com/id/E43XRBSF2ZL52WN/It works in the same way as the K'nexecutioner, but is much better designed.- More power - safely uses double the rubber bands of each barrel as the first K'nexecutioner- One-handed Uzi configuration inspired by the Perfect Dark weapon "Cyclone" (I am using two in the video)- Can use any size rod but holds onto (won't drop) blue rods. (firing all grey rods in the video)I have doubts that anyone at all built my K'nexecutioner, so I'm hoping that this one, smaller, is more possible. If you have the parts to build TWIN cyclones, though, you won't regret it!Hoo-ah! Pictures! And a new video!

So.... I was playing NFS most wanted on my PS2, when I picked two markers from the blacklist rival number 12, when I noticed that I didn't pick the pinkslip! (I didn't get the car). So it started saving, and you know when it says do not reset or switch off the console while its saving? Well I was like Reset Blah console blah blah blah. So i pressed reset. Then came regret. I started to fret. You wanna bet? So i pressed the button right. everything was going well until is started loading....... Then it said: COULD NOT LOAD, DATA CORRUPT. Or something like that. So whatever you do don't press reset while you are saving! OR ELSE!

So today I went down to some local woods with a hammer (Geode, granite, marble hunting) and I saw that 2 friends of mine had dug up a 20-30 pound rock. It was a heavy little bugger. So I swung the hammer at the rock for half an hour until I had about 30-50 small chunks of granite. The main reason I broke it was so that me and my friends could split it. One of my friends didn't want it. The other friend wasn't allowed to have it. All that was left was me. So I then realized that it was way too much to carry around. So I told another friends that didn't help do anything but polish the freaking thing with a brush *pauses and laughs* that I would give him all of it but 3 peices. I'm starting to regret saying that. So I wanna know... is granite worth anything/expensive?

We will see how this works out, I do this with my friends and it gets funny. Instructions: I will start with one word. If we were doing this in person it would be on a piece of paper. That paper is passed to the person next to him. That person writes a word, any word, and passes the paper on. This is repeated, and will form into: A. a funny paragraph B a totally random paragraph that makes no sense C a paragraph that tells an epic story that is the next "Hamlet" and makes perfect sense (That's no fun though) You can choose to end a sentence and start a totally new one anywhere Keep it appropriate. Example Cheese coated birds dance on top of my (*gasp*will it be appropriate?) head. Your pet cookie ate my cat. Here is the word: Why Oh, I forgot to say, add everything prier to your word into your comment (to avoid confusion and if you do that you can avoid a ton of replies to you that you will regret by just hitting post comment and not reply).

Morning all from the shire or Oxford UK My names is Rory, happy to be a member of the site and always enjoy a good discussion Thought it would be helpful for myself and others to start a bit of a debate about 3D printers in general. I build my own 3D printer last year and was happy with it the 6x6x6 results were not the best but better than anything I had produced before, I regreted ever selling it TBH but now the time has come for me to think about getting another. Ideally looking to have a scanning unit too but it is wether to build or buy.......TOO MUCH CHOICE!! Since last year ive seen a massive jump in the tech used in this area and my main questions are: What do each of you use and why that specific printer? Whats your best results ( best object made ) which to people perfer shop brought (ready made) or home made (DIY KIT) If you could choose any 3D printer what would it be? Cheers all, Look forwards to seeing how this thread discusses this topic

I've been meaning to tell the community this for a while, but I might as well do it now... I have ADHD and Bi-Polar Disorder. My mom and I decided that I should try and get off one of the pills I have been taking for years: the one to combat Bi-Polar Disorder. We realized today that it is better for me to get back on them; I haven't been taking it for two days. I'm not trying to start a sob story, but I'm just saying this to explain my weird behavior. I'm sorry if I've weirded you guys out, but I haven't been thinking straight and I'm kind of going through mood swings. Don't be alarmed, it's nothing too serious, but it is definitely enough to make me seem irritable and strange. I still do stand by the things I said in the 'war' that seems to be going on at Red's instructable about the classic guns; or at least most of them; I may have to go back and make sure I know what I said. I've probably said some things I may regret, and I'm very sorry. Sorry for all that. :I -DOK

I have a caravan in a remote location and I've got round to thinking of buying a petrol-driven electrical generator. I'm figuring on using this with an ethanol (E85) fuel. I'd really appreciate some help if you can to any parts of my queries. I have looked around on Google for advice but there's a lot of conflicting stuff as usual and I know you guys are good. My normal max load is around 4,500watts but I have security HID lights which have a huge inductive start for a few millseconds - how will a suitably rated generator cope? Do I always add a 20% margin to the generator capacity so for a 4.5kW load I should get a 6kW machine? Or is it not 20%? Given that the machine will be outside, I don't want to annoy the other caravanners, so if I build a sound-proofing box with just an outlet for the exhaust, could I expect the noise to be reduced signifcantly, given a lot of noise will be coming from the exhaust itself? The machine has a tank of 15litres but I want to increase this safely - how could this be done, if at all? Safety is paramount (naturally) but then so is convenience. Do you have a generator? If so, what do you wish you knew beforehand or any regrets? What kind of maintenance schedule is there and is there a performace improvement for modding the air-intake to a larger filter like for cars and bikes? Many thanks for reading my question and thanks for your time to reply.

Hi all, I'm about to get started on my first set of loudspeaker cabinets. Since quite some time I have 8 Visaton FR10 drivers lying on a shelf and I want to use those. After some research on diy loudspeaker cabinets I came up with the design in the attached drawing. Before I start building a pair of these, I'd like to have some advice on the design. I'd like to keep the costs as low as reasonably possible :). Questions I have and some design considerations: - Are the tubes correctly dimensioned? I used the "vented box calculator" over here to get the dimensions for a cabinet with one driver. I doubled the area of the tube and placed two of them in the cabinet. - I plan to clad the inner walls and the backside of the drivers' frame with convoluted foam. Do I need to fill the inner volume with some kind of polyester wool as well? - I want to use the speakers with my "Serious Amp". Will that work? - I planning to build the speakers without a filter. Is that wise? - The four drivers in each cabinet are in pairs series // parallel, to get a joint impedance of 8 Ohm. - As I understand it from the various forums / websites, it's best to place the drivers in a vertical line. However, the cabinet becomes too tall to fit in my tiny livingroom. I just don't have the floorspace to place them. Am I going to regret that decision? Your advice is appreciated! Y.

Now that the tree in the backyard is showing first signs of fruits developing I was able to determine that it is a pawpaw tree. After my first surprise that I might enjoy some nice and delicious fruits this summer I asked my friend Google for more details. Shouldn't have done that.... I think in the Us the family of these are usually refered to as Asimina. The bad thing is I now know that not only the tree itself, the leaves and seeds contain Annonacin but the flesh of the fruit too. In some research documents the found levels in the fruits seem to by sky high :( People trying the fruit for the first time are usually totally over the moon due to the new tase or get adverse reactions right away. After a season of eating the fruits several times a week most people claim they now longer can stand their taste and if they try anyway they regret it quickly. The health benefits are quite obvious if you only think of the good stuff in it, but what to do with the levels of Annonacin accumulating in your body and causing vital neurons in your brain to suffer permanant damage and death? As the tree is native to the US I quickly found that the indiginous tribes widely used both the leaves and fruits. But I was unable to find any info on how much, how often or if the fruits were treated in some way to get rid of the toxins. One way or the other I have to teste them once ripe and ready but if I do like them I would love to able to continue eating without loosing the rest of my insanity ;) Anyone eating them on a regular base? Suffering from side effects? Already over it for some reason? Let me know! :)

I'm trying to invent something. I'm realistic enough to know it probably won't work as planned and definitely won't make me rich, but I'll always regret it if I don't try. I need to power 6 electromagnets and I want to use one cord to power them. The electromagnets are wire wrapped around a soft iron core. They don’t need to be strong, just strong enough to activate a reed switch. (The pictures are labelled with #s to show which question they are for.) 1. How do I connect them all into an electrical extension cord? Do I have to use a screw terminal? 2. Can a 9 volt battery clip carry more than 9 volts, or will it fry? If I properly joined a power cord and 9 volt battery clip and plugged it in, what would happen? Would there have to be resistors? What kind? 3. Would this configuration with two screw terminals work? Did I misunderstand the function of the screw terminal? Is there something better I could use? (From bottom to top) ~The electrical cord powers the whole thing. It distributes the current to all the wires. ~The reed switches prevent the all wires from sending all the currents to the light bulb. ~If I put a magnet over the AQUA wire reed switch, the circuit would be completed and current would reach the light bulb and cause it to light. I tried to figure out how to do it on my own but when you don't know any electric components, terms, phrases, and definitions - like me - it's next to impossible to look things up.

Dear Carleyy, Thank you for your email (copied below). We have carefully reviewed the instructions/regulations for the Play With Your Food Challenge contest at https://www.instructables.com/about/submit.jsp. We have scrutinized our own entry, and we are unable to see why our entry, "Squash Pie," has been rejected. We understand that the finalists have been chosen and are currently being judged. We kindly request that you review our entry. If our entry does not meet the criteria, please let us know how or why it has been rejected. While my sister and I participated in the making of our entry, it was my 10 year-old niece, Miele, who worked extremely hard on the concept for the video, the script, and the food preparation. She also edited the entire video on her own, including completing extensive research on non-copyrighted music to include. This was a self-directed project, and she was excited and proud of her achievement. We were all surprised and deeply disappointed to have been rejected without a clear explanation or reason. I have cc'd my niece and sister on this email; while I understand that you have many entries, and cannot respond to each entrant individually, we are very much hoping for a personal response, whether our entry is reconsidered or not. Instructables' first artist in residence to start at Pier 9.I lucked out and happened to be that person. I also lucked out and happened to be at Pier 9 for about nine months. I feel like I've had one of the strangest residencies at Instructables. Noah was willing to be flexible enough with me to allow me to still work full time while I was there. It only allowed me my free time to work on projects at P9. I found myself there early in the mornings, late into the evenings, and consistently all day on the weekends. I've seen the sun rise at P9. I've seen the sun set at P9. I've been a lone person at P9 surrounded by millions of dollars of incredible machines. Machines that I have been dreaming about having access to for years. Free range of what I could do. Creativity overload. It becomes overwhelming at times. Some days were spent with anxiety over doing something that you hope is impressive. It can make it an intimidating place to start at. Somehow, I found myself in a building filled with some of the most competent, experienced, and creative people I have ever met. Ultimately, my biggest regret is not having enough time to spend more of my time there. The conversations you have at Pier 9 are incredible, aided with an amazing view of the San Francisco Bay and free coffee made by a robot. “What are you making?” I think this is the unofficial slogan of Pier 9 because that is the first thing someone will ask when you meet. Your response is always greeted with genuine enthusiasm. That's the culture. You are given the tools and resources to create anything. The thing that you create is welcomed with high regards. Positivity flows in everything. I am so humbled to be able to be part of what is happening at Pier 9. I think everyone agrees that something amazing is happening there. I am thankful to everyone who helped make it happen. To Noah, Vanessa, Randy, Amanda, Audrey, Gabe, Dan, Sean, J, and everyone else. Thank you. It is you that makes Pier 9 the special place that it is. The machines are only an added bonus. High fives all around.

I have been having intermittent problems with my cdrom stepper motor. I had a four pin motor soldered to a bare copper wire. I used the pins not the little ribbon cable and I left the ribbon cable attached because I figured, as soon as I snip it off I would regret it later. The other end connects to a breadboard that is in line with the stepper input to the EasyDriver motor controller. I have been using GRBL controller on my PC and when I tested it the first time in a vertical position it would just wobble around, not moving up nor down. I thought the stepper motor was bad so I got another one. The second was wired the same way, 4-pins, and it worked in the vertical no problem. Then later, while working on the rest of my project the second cdrom motor that was working did that same wiggle without moving up or down. I realized that the solder connections were very close together and that two pins were electrically connected. I modified the wire to basically a homemade male to male jumper wire. The extra pin made the room I needed to unsolder the two pins. Once again the motor worked up and down with no wobble. I have done nothing to modify the cdrom stepper any further and went to test my motor today after a couple weeks hiatus and once again, wobble with no up nor down motion. At this point I am stumped. I have reason to believe that my solder skills are lacking and that my homemade jumper has broken internally inside my shrink tubing where I cannot immediately see it but If anyone else has had this problem and knows how to rectify it please let me know. I hope there is enough info here laying out my problem and that someone can lead me in the right direction. If it also helps, I have checked my pin out and I do not feel it is backwards or crossed. I checked the resistance between the four pins and the end of my "jumper" and is approximately, 40, 20, 40, 100 ohms for A-, A+, B-, B+, respectively. I am really not sure what these number would mean but my buddy told me to check the continuity from end to end.

They are just four letters L-I-F-E...Based on just these letters,is life that short indeed? No...it is just a short word ,but the meaning of it is not that short, moreover it's quite long. Can someone tell me what does life mean? I think i know,or at least i will try to explain as i see it and as far as i have experienced it till now. Everyone says that life is short...but do you know anything else that lasts longer than this? Actually, life is the longest experience full of most unknown surprises that we find ourselves in while we are breathing. Its the longest experience we are part of without having the chance of taking or leaving it. Life is the hardest exam and the only one in which you can not cheat even if you try. It is the theater we all are actors of,where everything happens in front of our eyes, around us and most of times suddenly it takes our breath away. Breathing does not mean we are leaving a life. Breathing helps us understand and realize that we all have reasons that keep us alive day by day. Do i have reasons?! Of course, i do! I do have my own reasons for still breathing. It is maybe only one, maybe one hundred, maybe more or less than this. I do not really know how many reasons i have, but it does not matter. I may not see these reasons, but sometimes i do feel what i am still breathing for. I can feel why i am looking up at the stars every night. I can feel the reason i am walking on the streets every day. Everything that happens has a specific reason. My most important one is love. That is the love i have for my life i am living and for everyone who is part of my world. I see it as the stongest feeling that makes you live in Earth touching the sky. Another reason of living my life is hope. The hope for a better day,and for a successful future makes me breath deeply. The belief of having a power to make a difference even if someone do not and will not understand me keeps me alive. The beauty of life makes me wake up happily every morning and enjoy the new day that comes. My stubbornness makes me fight for everything i want each day. I am enjoying every moment of my life. I am still breathing because i do not feel lonely, but that does not mean my life is depended on anyone's . Nobody's perfect,we all make mistakes, but not everyone regrets. That happens just because some people still think about how much fun they had while making the mistake. I am open to anyone that gives me advice, but as i do not judge anyone for anything they have done ,i do not want to be judged also. It is me and that is my life and i have my own reasons for everything i do. While most of people will be commenting on my desicions about my life,i will be waving them from the stars.....

I've been driving Womble for exactly a week now, and some things have occurred to me. I thought I'd share them, in no particular order.I enjoy driving again.Because I'm driving, not steering. No power steering, no servo brakes, I am in touch with what the car is doing every second I'm driving. I do something, and I get instant feedback. I'm suddenly redeveloping all the good driving habits I used to have - looking further ahead and watching traffic more, correct hand-position on the wheel, feeding the wheel through my hands as I turn, slowing with gears before brakes. It's a cliche, but it's seat-of-the-pants driving.I drove Kitewife's Focus a couple of days ago, it was a disaster! Taps the brakes, do an emergency stop - steer with two fingers, weave all over the road. There's no feedback, nothing to tell me by feel exactly how much braking I'm doing, or how fast the wheels are turning. I had to look at the dials to check the speed and watch the revs before changing gear.Modern cars, I have decided, are only one step short of video games.Maybe that's part of the reason for the rise in roadrage? There's no need to take pride or care, because the car does it all for you. Spend enough money, and the only thing that will kill you is if you drive at a tree. Even that may not be possible with radar-triggered brakes soon to become more common. If you have abdicated all responsibility for your safety to a mindless mechanism, who do you blame if something goes wrong? Where do you direct your anger? The only target left is the other driver.I seem to have joined a sub-culture.I'm not the only driver of a proper Mini in my area. I pass two or three every day. Amongst others, I've seen a white one, striped pink, with a bubbly blonde driving. I've seen a 70s Traveller in immaculate condition. Several jobbing Minis, in every-day-driving state, and a Mini wedged full of teenage lads, fully kitted out for racing, roll-cage and all.Every single one of them waved, flashed their lights or otherwise said "hello" as we passed. I have never seen drivers of other kinds of car do that. It's pretty good, getting a friendly wave from a stranger. It lifts your day, puts a smile on your face. It's like we share a happy secret. Minis attract comment more than cars that cost fifty times as much.If people see a Ferrari in the car park, they might nudge each other and make admiring comments, but if they see a Mini, they come over, say hello. On Saturday, a huge hairy rocker, returning to his big Japanese family car, children in tow, left his children in his car, and came over for a chat about the surprisingly roomy interior of my Mini, and an idle chat about the type of engine (single-point injection, if you're wondering).People might wish they could afford a supercar, but they are genuinely jealous of people who actually own a proper Mini.Everybody has a Mini in their closet.I'm not really a petrol head, and I don't work with petrol heads, but suddenly everybody wants to talk about cars. They all seem to have had an adventure in a Mini, their own or a friend's. Half of them regret having sold their Mini years ago.OK, so the old Minis don't meet modern safety rules. They're slow, utterly lacking in luxuries (my heater has two settings - on or off), but if somebody started building them new, using the original molds for the panels and frames (they still exist), and charged five or six thousand pounds a pop, they would make an absolute fortune.

Hello, I am a 17 year old electronic hobbyist. I am in the process of making a "Haptic Feedback" meditation device. I give the whole project story here. If you are just interested in the final project you can skim or skip to the "Testing" section. THE IDEA Many months ago (when i was not so knowledgeable about electronics) I had an idea. I wanted to be able to see my thoughts as I thought them. I was obsessed with the idea of this and the thought of what would happen( imagine holding up a microphone to a pair of speakers). I could imagine myself staring at my own thoughts (or a colorful representation of them) for hours. I imagined it to be a "New Generation" of meditation. I drew up a few sketches of what this would look like and.. I hit a wall. At the time. I knew absolutely no way to do this. I just knew it was possible. I put the project on the back burner. CONSTRUCTION Six months passed and I had gotten better and better at electronics and micro-controllers and such. A month ago, I started obsessing over it again. I did some internet searches about this type of technology and all the gibberish started making sense. Not before long. I had ordered the parts for it. It cost me a good 100 dollars in birthday money. But it was well worth it and i do not regret the purchase's at all. The three main pieces were a Micro-controller(arduion uno), a brain-wave reading headset(from an expensive childs toy) and a 7 inch by 3 inch RGB led panel( a fancy panel that makes different colors and patterns). Despite knowing a little bit about electronics I was out of my depth, yet still addicted to the project. Long story longer, I had tested the three pieces of technology and they all worked beautifully. With my limited supplies i busted open the headset, made some solder joints, plugged it into the micro-controller, plugged the micro-controller into the computer, and plugged the brain reader into me. Someone before me had already made sample brain viewing programs in the processing language for these kinds of projects and i downloaded it. I turned on the program and flinched as i turned on the headset( being plugged into your laptops battery can be a tad unnerving). I was looking at a graph of my brainwaves in a system of line graphs and bars. TESTING This was exciting stuff. I sat there for perhaps an hour just staring at my brainwaves shortly noticing a pattern emerging from just simply staring at even the brain reading program. I noticed the more I stared at my brainwaves looking for the next sudden jump or dip. The less they did. In other words, actively TRYING to move my brainwaves, almost completely nullified them. This was very interesting. I took the device and my laptop to my school To get an accurate sample, I allowed any and everyone who wanted plug themselves in to go right ahead. As they messed with thier hair to get it to fit right and turned it on. What was seen for a few seconds was a (what I consider healthy) measure of brain activity. Everything was jumping up and down at varying levels. But after the subject began staring at this dance. The brain activity shrank and shrank until little was left to be observed. Occasionally depending on the situation the subject would then get bored with the lack of activity and try and make some sort of small talk. It then showed a small rising in overall brainwaves that was immediately crushed by the subjects attention toward the screen. In the initial planning, this was the last possibility I had considered. With accidental electrocution being higher on my list of possibilities. The grandiose plan of mixing my thoughts and ideas in front of my eyes shrank. I was loving every second of it. I then later plugged the panel into the device and began writing code to make it react the way i wanted it to. I had programmed the panel to display the color blue when meditation was high and red when attention was high. Purple would occur during a balance of the two. I then took out my computer from the equation as a reader and decided to see what would happen by just watching these two stats work themselves out on a color panel. I got similar results. When I was actively attempting to meditate while simultaneously watching my level of meditation it was an unwavering red. Deep breaths and glances away from the panel would bring purple to blue colors. Then I tried something completely different. I attempted to radiate unconditional love for my brainwaves. I accepted them for their want to be attentive and alert. And embraced them with as much sincerity as I could. The panel turned purple and stayed blue for as long as i could keep this state up without wavering. "Wow" i remember remarking. I may have created the worlds first "Unconditional Love bench press". And your up to speed. FUTURE I have some ideas for the future of this project but I have caught myself in a mental enigma. How would one meditate to the thoughts of their meditation without their monitoring of the brainwaves getting in the way? Or have I missed the point of meditation which might be to have no thoughts? Ideas and suggestions would be great. I would love to hear what this community would have to offer to this device. Input on meditation? Input on the technical stuff? All is welcome.

Some might have noticed that I started a few, lets say, unconventional topics here.I added one just as a response to some very nasty feedback I got in other places. If you wonder what I am talking about check my topics about all things related to magnetism, "free energy" and such nonsense. The feedback I got was directed personal enough and verbal enough that I decided to increase my speed of seeding bread crumbs that might allow other people to "see" things slightly differently.Being called insane and mental case is the only things I use here as most of the rest would qualify as insults of the worst kind. The goal that was claimed I totally missed is to make people open up.Science or knowledge is as fluent as life itself. It eveloves with us, around us and through us.But we learned to use technology mostly to replace humans and to make our life easier. With that laziness also a reduced "desire" for knowledge and understand evolved. It is now far easier to "Google it" and forget it right after than to acutally learn and really understand something.A prime example is the disappearing artform of creating Japanese swords. No industrial process can produce a steel as pure and with such properties as used to be "offered" to the master swordsmith. Both are highly specialsed and rely on each other to create the perfect sword that outlasts generations.Once tradition gives way to modern life even this art will become a lost artform. We lost so much already, be it species, health, enviroment or just a "clean planet".Instead of accepting nature back into our scientific thinking and understanding we will continue to fail and get even more reluctant to learn new things. The blockbusters of science are no longer finding new laws of phsics or trying to understand things. We try to go further and further and use more and more dangerous ways to "create" the energy we continue to use more and more with no regrets.Well, other than complaining about the bills for it, which we wouldn't have otherwise...Why do we need more forms of colliding atoms to create energy? No because we need so much, only because we want more and more and at "centralised" locations.Distribution, control, money...Allowing us to use solar panels to reduce our electricity bill is nice, but try to overdo it and make good money by creating you own solar panel park and you get into trouble already. You can't see it anywhere other then back to your provider. And you only get whatever he thinks is a fair price for it, usually far less than what you pay to get it.Once you reach zero some even won't pay you money at all.And since there is always winter and night times it is only good that there will be always a need for electricity from the grid.Just try to get rid of your elecricity, water and gas connection in a township or city in case you found other sources you get for free.....Even if you build new most won't even allow you to without these "required" connections. If you need waste waster you also need tap water you pay for.And since a waste water treatment is no longer hyginic enough (despite proving the opposite) you can't get out.Gas you might be able to avoid but if there is electricity in the stree than it is already a building requirement to provie to the builder...What if all this nonsense and fakery actually has a true background somewhere?Humans are not meant to fly but we developed planes anyways. What once was a dream for a select few is now the prefered travel mode ofr most going on a far away holiday. But it is only so popular because there is a big demand. And where is demand profit can be made.Like a farmer:If you have ton of corn like twenty farmers around you then your local price will be low.Sell them a bit further away and you might get a lot more.In return our demand is closly related to the demands of those that provide the source of your demands. We all need energy and we evolve into a society that will need more of with every new generation.I try to give you hint in the form of a comparison:If you have a nice man cave and love to tinker than you might have a framed hand drill on the wall to remind you of how it all started for your grandfather.Or in most case you just liked it and got it for 2 bucks from a garage sale LOLEither, imagine all electricity would be gone and lost forever.Suddenly this crappy drill becomes a status symbol because only you can do things other people really struggle with - you drill holes with ease...Imagine the rpice you could ask to sell it..."Free energy" is the same but sadly in reverse. If a company sees a profit than it will be utilised some way.And if it happens that energy is your main income and keeps you rich and in control than you don't mind paying two or three fortunes to someone so he can forget and is happy give you his machine.Or would you really say no to life of no limits and with nothing to worry for your future generations of kids and grandkids?A few tried anyway to make a furtune themself by keeping a circle of trusted persons and finding enough willing investors to get their project going.Even if you can find some flaws there are still doubts about what someone would go through the lenght of providing online updates, sales numbers, testimonials and so on for years.Funny enough actually finding someone who is sceptic and make him check and report about it does not work either. No big university orders one or asks to really check it and provide a real world testimonial. No government or legal agency steps in to stop the "fraud" either. What is real, what is fake, what is disguise - you can figure it out if you want to.Ok, I could, but why bother if litereally everyone one already did and showed nothing works when it comes to the great unknown?Exactly for that reason alone it is worth it!People might make money now from ads or through clickbait but the topic is older than the internet already. And the proof even older than electricity...So many people would not try unless someone convinced them to try it ;)Might be just a bad joke but gets the point:If you ask 20 people if you can swim through the river to get to the other side then you might get confusing answers.1. No problem it is safe.Fully true but the guy might be from far up the river where it has no crocodiles in it...2. You could try it but a boat is safer as there might be corcodiles here.Still leaves you the option to swim as you can't be sure about the reptiles...You could go on and create a near endless list with bridges up ahead and so on.What it comes to is that depending on HOW you ask and WHO you ask the answers can be as different as day and night. In terms of science and making someone understand it take the most basic approach possible.Remember that time in school when your math teacher confronted you the existence of negative numbers? The confusion with the zero and how to add, subtract or multiply...Your teacher might have been great or you a quick learner but imagine the worst possible way to teach you an understanding of negative numbers! You know that 5 - 8 equals -3.You learned that this is true and why it is so.Imagine your teacher would have explained this extra simple like back with the apples when learning to add numbers."If there are 5 people in a room and 8 people leave the room, then 3 people must go back in so that room is empty!"Makes total sense if you expand the number game from above to 5 - 8 + 3 = 0 !!No sense at all however if you do it with people ;)People are not numbers, pressures or volumes, they are "real" to us.We associate certain things automatically, other we learn to associate and interpret through learning.Learning however is no longer actually doing all that would be involved in less technological world. We like magic tricks because we fail to understand how it is done or sometimes even how it is possible.Today it is for entertainment only.A true magician would never use his skills to scam people. But spend enough and research and you can do the same trick you saw on stage. Some not as good or not all though - thats life...Ask a good magician how how long it took him to get his new trick ready for the stage and quite often you get to hear it was years in the making.Think about that fact when you judge what is possible by dedication ;)
Question by Downunder35m
Global warming, climate change, jelly fish attacks, changed ocean currents...We all know the highlights from the news but what is the real deal behind all of this?It can't be denied that burning fossil fuels with no regrets has an impact on our globe.CO2 and other gasses or elements have been trapped for thausands of years. We release them all into our atmosphere and while doing so keep adding more harmful stuff. So, of course it is easy to say that if we would have nver used our fossile fuels to this extent then our world would be unharmed and a happy place throughout.Even if we would ignore the impossible task of making it where we are right now without having used any fossile fuels: How much would it be different? If we trust the offical climate data that has been collected then it clearly shows a rise in so called climate changing emissions since our industrial revolution started.Be it data from the ice, core drillings or just sample taken from old canyons - the results are all the same.Since the late 1800's there is a steady rise in emissions, CO2 and all the other things we don't really want in our air.And for good reasons all these green advocates try their best to stop us from doing more harm.Since the 80's we started to actually care more, better engines, catalytic converters, cleaning mechanisms for our industiral waste and chimneys. But did it make any change or difference?About 40 years now some countries try hard to do it right, so this must show up somewhere?!Well it does not.You see countries like the US never really cared about climate or the enviroment if there was a cheaper and easier option.Just check how long it took them to even acknowledge that our climate is changing due to our interference...Then there is China and as we have seen with the olympics they literally have to shut down production so you can see for more than a few km...But the same is true for so many other countries.Like everwhere else the industrial revolutions comes sooner or later and as always the cheapest way is done first and for far too long. And with the delay in reactions and consequences it is now certain that the worst is yet to come.Of course there is also another side to the entire story - nature itself. We destroy it where we can to safisfy our need for being cheap.Ever wondered where all this cheap furniture is coming from?Or all the wood used throughout the world?Rainforests are disappearing, flora and fauna is destroyed. In most cases with a lot of fires as it is still the easiest way to clean up when done. Now add the vulcanic eruptions that increased over the past 20 odd years around the world. And if you dare all the bushfires or natural causes.Combined this causes a higher impact than all our burning of fossile fuels - and it adds to the mix.And this brings us back in time.Taking the records of climete conditions all the way back to before the dinosaurs showed us that we had periods of much higher temperatures than what we might see soon.CO2 level at some periods were so high that the earth literally was a green house. So why did we humans amke it anyway onto this earth if chance were so bad?Species adjust, evolve or go extinct, new ones appear...Well, unless you are a croc or so and really don't care about Darvin and evolution ;)Does that mean we are on the way to become a new species?Sadly no, because we are the cause of all our problems. We now use technology and science to adjust nature and the enviroment to our needs. It gets too hot? Well add an airconditioner, will you!?The ground water is too contaminted to drink? Well, why do you think we invented bottled water?!You need room for new homes? Don't mind the flood planes, just drain them and build, there was no flood in over 30 years...See, even if we would go fully green and honur nature around the world from today on.Even if we try to clean up the mess we already created. The effects of what we did over the last 40 or more years are still in progress and far from over.Like a good stew it keep cooking until it is ready to serve. But strenght comes in numbers!Like a virus we keep multiplying even in areas with very limited ressources. After all, we just import what we need..Natural selection is being eliminated so pharma companies can make a living too. From just over 40 years our "natural" life expectency increased now to well into the 80's.You are not fertile? No problem we have means to fertilise your eggs with the sperm from hubby!Already suffering badly from diabetes, asthma or other chronical illness? No problem, have some kids anyway. And just to top it always make sure to avoid natural foods in favour for processed and artificial ingredients. In nature the weak, the sick, the old, the malformed and incapable are a food source. We took this food source away, keet them around, care for them and make sure really everyone has the same chance in life.In life - but not in nature anymore!Social evolution meant that natural selection was no longer a requirement to ensure a strong "tribe" or hunting party. We compensated the drain on ressources and all pharma companies are still very grateful for this.No this is no weird rant on humanity or the idea of some mad person, it is just the naked reality we like to ignore.A horse breeder will not accept a weak and constanlty sick horse for his breeding stock.A broken leg, like for a cow usually just means the animal is put down. Some dog breeders still prefer to cull a few pups just because the color pattern is not nice enough or the ears are too short.Even if you just breed fish you o through all sorts of troubles to ensure you have the best genes available in your tanks. You think this is already going to far with the ideas, I know :(But we have real world examples highlighting the results of the exact opposite: Inbreeding and ignoring the defects in genes and health. The british royal family destroyed the italian and russin monarchies the same was the spanish and protugise, even impacted on the french. In times when there was no clue about genetic defects or deseases that can be dormant in females but very active in males, the british royalty simply kept providing tainted bloodlines to the other royal familes. No offsprings that are male and of good health meant the end of their monarchies. The british survived by allowing the common folk to join the blue blood lines and now it is common in all the monachrchies left in the world.Remove the carries, provide fresh genes to get a better diversity.Really no offence, but just look at Charles and Camilla ;)Jokes aside: the story of the european monarchies shows what happens if things go too wrong. From hunters a gatherers that either kept healthy or died out we eveloved to having a gene pool that is full of nasty surprises.Again no offence meant in any way or to any person! If we compare our world with a big aquarium than it might have eveloved like this:Once there was a bowl full of plants, guppies and lots of other fish and creatures living on each other.Over time the guppies learnt when the feeding times are and made sure they get most of the food.Slowly the other psecies had not enough room and food anymore, only the hunter had a good linving with the huge supply of guppies. Then the guppies managed to reduce the dangers from all predators around and started to really take off.Soon every guppy had only conerns about having a good life and enough food. The waste got more and more, the sick and ill too.The last hunter able to fight them died off as he too suffered from the wasten the changed enviroment and gnetic defects transfered. Now there is little plants left, guppies everywhere, crap everywhere and even those guppies only living a few months still manages to find a partner to ensure their tainted gene pool spreads into the general population. We have no tank owner getting the balance right again, removing the sick and weak, we humans just keep going strong and if the crap pile gets too high we put grass and houses on top of it....We humans don't like to be compared with fish, a virus or any other lower being for that matter. These hings just don't affect or concern us.And anyone who dares to do so anyway has a long list of nasty words thrown at them.Is it because we humans can't tolerate the truth?Or is because deep inside we all know but refuse to think about it?

Several years ago the company behind the original ARA-2000 antenna, Dressler Hochfrequenztechnik, closed. The ARA series of antennas, like many other products by this company never got a patent, instead it was trusted that no one would bother to replicate it.A bit like the Swiss Army knife, many tried to copy it, none really managed to match the original quality. There is quite a bit of hacking still going on for this antenna, most projects though seem to be abandoned at the time of writing this.I am currently trying to figure out how to create an entire clone that everyone who knows how to properly use a soldering iron can build. There is a lot to consider here...The active element is of quite unusual shape and needs to be wound around a cylinder of a pretty accurate diameter. My initial tests showed that for example aluminium foil with some unavoidable wrinkles already has a negative effect. And a change in diameter of just 2mm means the entire antenna only performs badly for the entire band. This part is thankfully already solved to my satisfaction using thin copper sheets and some stiff plastic sheet.Quite a pain though is the MMIC part - the amplifier that makes the antenna active. There is a ton of MMIC blobs available, either solo or as a ready to go amplifier.Downside is that without really knowing any characteristics of the original is comes down to guesswork. And as most of the cheap SDR dongles won't provide a BIAS TEE I will opt for an external power supply for the amp.I might provide the option for a inline use a bit later though. Why clone the ARA-2000 antenna? For starters you need to forget the mythical stories you might have heard about this antenna."Picks up even the weakest signals!", "Totally linear over the entire bandwidth" and so on...Without the amplifier the antenna is actually not even average in therms of reception performance. My initial tests with a network analyser showed that the anteanna actually is behaving really weird (without the amp!).Although this first bit needs further testing, it seems that most, if not all of the work in the 1.5-2GHz range is done by just the straight connecting strup going from the amp, or in my test case the coax, to the wrapped antenna part. For anything in the more interesting frequency bands it seems that the antenna is not using anything like a discone, whip or ground plane antenna.Instead the 3rd harmonics of a given frequency provide the max power output from the antenna but it arrives at the cable at the right frequency.Especially in the lower frequencies, below 200MHz there is also quite some phase shifting happening. As a passive antenna it seems to be almost impossible to find a frequency to transmit on without using some matching trickery first. But when it comes to size or looks, the ARA outperforms everything you can think of unless you want to constantly adjust the length of your whip antenna. And if you check what is available in real (user) data in terms of noise and signal quality than most other antenna types are far worse. The design provides a wide frequency range with very little noise, almost like a build in filter.Considering that mostly harmonic frequencies are used not that surprising.Getting hooked on SDR means you start little and then you want more and more.Unless you really need the low frequency HAM bands below 50MHz the ARA is a good choice that just makes sense. What is quite surprising in the original is the total lack of protection for strong signals.Sure, we might never need a lightning arrestor because all is enclosed in plastic and has little attraction lightning, but someone hittiing the transmit button close by....I will have to do some more checks to determine whether or not more protection is required. What is the problem with amplifier? For starters, no one really knows what was used in the original - they all just guess based on how well the real design matches some datasheet.Means whatever was used might as well be a custom made solution.I checked a few datasheets for MMIC amps but could not find any useful reference to the handling of things like negative gain, phase shift or a constantly changing impedance. Some however state that a 50 or 75Ohm signal is provided at the output. If I interpret that correctly than those MMIC's not only amplify but also do some matching. In most cases you won't need an amp that works outside what the antenna can provide.Problem is that I don't like regretting things later on ;)So IMHO it would be best to use a wideband MMIC covering all from about 1MHz to a few GHz.Additional filters can then cut off what is not required or where the antenna starts to fail. What is clear by the original design is that the cable shield acts as a ground and most likely also has a balancing function. It would make sense to add a ferrite trap close the the receiver to filter out what the cable might otherwise mess up.Can the frequency range be lowered to get even the low HAM bands? The answer is YES and NO.It is not a big problem to extend the cone shape and then hope to come much lower.Issue with this is the helical, long periodic design. As basically only the 3rd harmonics are used for all interesting frequencies any ARA type antenna going much lower would end to be really long. You can't just make it longer! One thing is to have a full and even number of turns. The original only had two, three turns is bad, four means the entire antenna is slightly longer than your average downpipe for your roof gutters....Other, seemingly logical alternative would be to stick to two turns and to increase the diameter.Apart from the size problem here we would also change the shape of the foil quite a bit and I have not done enough tests with that to provide a conclusion. Are there alternative design options? As it turns out copper pipe is available in 80mm diameters for the use in chimneys as well as downpipes. With a proper machine it would be pretty straight forward to remove what is not used as the active element.Milling a pipe or rod is these days a common thing in many good workshops. But on a hobby level and low budget....One of the best options for cheap test antennas of this design is to use tinting foil - the cheapest you can find ;)Just read the lable and make sure it does not use a metalised film.If it has no UV protection and no tinit at all it is best but hard to find.A little less stiff is the stuff to cover school books or cupboards.Vinyl is bad though! If you look for copper foil in the cheap online places you mostly find the suff used for shielding in rolls of 200x1000mm.Unless you have a really sharp knife or really suitable sissors this stuff is a pain to cut as the glue tends to stick very good to whatever you use to cut through.Don't ever try one of these blade type cutters for paper and pictures unless you put a slight oil film on all cutting surfaces first....In some hobby shops you can get copper foil without any glue in different thicknesses - this stuff is the prefered option. Not only cheaper than the China rolls with glue but you invest a bit more and get a thickness that does not wrinkle right away when working with it ;)Cheap, steel downpipe and cutters or nibblers?I though about and I tried - and I failed LOLUnless you use a pin type nibbler and custom made rig the result is quite bad - at least mine was. What works though is to use thin aluminium sheets, cut them and then bend them around a suitable template. But I ran out of old laminated sings to salvage and the duble sided ones I have left are too much work. What comes next?Well, I have a few rolls of copper sheets coming next month, the cheap glue covered type. This time however I will leave the plastic cover on and use tape to secure the foil to the pipe.A two-stage amp with external power supply is coming too so I can do some more tests in this area. For the time being I will opt for some 3D printed end caps but with a bit of luck can find something easier next time I have time to waste in the hardware store.Excluding cable and a cheap USB or 12V power supply, the current costs of building the anteanna are around $40US.About half of that if you don't cennectors and attach the coax directly.Another experiement I am working on is to use copper tape, 12mm wide, to create the antenna in a semi-fractal style.I am hoping this will provide a high enough gain so the antenna is usable without an amplifier.Right now the biggest issue is to find a really SDR suitable way to deal with strong signal close by.I will keep you update here when I start with the new antenna and upload some pics along the was of building it.
