Could you use a small size of Tube Metal ?

You could tack/spot weld a small size of tube steal a  (1/2" or 1")  underneath  the bottom side of the angle iron @ the 90 degree bend. This would make the Lathe rails/bed a lot stronger. Tube Steel would be the best option because it wouldn't bend or Flex like Roll Steel might. You can hold a long say a 10' piece of roll steal up and you can see it bow some. Then hold a 10' piece of Tube Steel up and compare the difference of bow in the two. Angle iron would be a second choice. PK

A little magnet experiment for everyone!

Some people just love to play with magnets and have a lot of them.If you are just like that and like to tinker a bit then I might have something for you. What magnets you use for the following experiment does not really matter but you should have 20 or 30 of identical properties. Can be disk magnets, block magnets or cubes, just not spheres ;)If you have a 3D printer you use it to make it fancy but a peice of wood, acrylic or such and a drill will do for round magnets. For cubes or flat packs you can make retaining walls on a flat surface. The experiment goes like this:I assume you already tried ways to combine your magnets to make them stronger, like stacking them up.But there is another way to really increase how strong they are combined.Start with one magnet at the center. Then like a ring add more magnets around it but with the oppisite side up.The created mounting solution is to prevent them flipping up and together, you want them as close as possible though.Add another ring and change the direction of the field again.Try this magnet, once all magnets are secured and compare the holding strenght to any other combo you tried so far.It will be much higher for the same amount of magnets. If you want to prevent the use of glue then try to create your mounting system with a really flat but strong enough bottom - this will then be the contact surface.Slightly reduced strength but you can re-use magnet with ease. But if you want to get a really strong one you need cube magnets.Like before you want to create some sort of grid, this time we go for a square.Start with cube in the center, facing north up.Leave enough space in your construction to add 8 more cubes around it - like on the face of a rubik's cube.Leave them empty for now !Add nother row, this time 16 to keep the square.Of course these one go with the south side facing up!Again one empty of 48 and then one last one with north side up with 196 magnets.Ok, to be fair, you wouldn't be able to pull it off a metal surface unless you used really tiny cubes, so if in doubt then go for just to 48 and leave the enter one out for now.Should be quite intense but similar to what any other shaped magnet would have done.Time to fill the voids!Add the cubes in the spce between the magnets so the north and south side face the magnets next to it!So basically sideways but in the correct orientation. You can then also add the center piece - try either orientation for that one ;)What happened now is that you forced the magnetic field lines to go up instead od for trying to go the easiest and shortest way to the next magnet. And "up" is where our magnetic surface would be, which provides the now overdue shortcut for the magnetic fields.Be amased how much stronger this version is and how much even 3x3x3 cubes would accomplish. With 10x10x10mm N52 magnets you might be able to use them support our wieght if you pull straight dwon from a horizontal surface...Ok, kidding, not just might, unless you are really big...One 10x10x10 might hold about 6kg.Stacked up a bit more but having 20 or stcked up would not be much stronger than 10.Even just 25 magnets with one in the center, one row of sideways orientated and one row with opposing field to the center one would be hard to remove from a steel surface. If we go with the imagined 6kg per magnet we could assume to get 25 x 6 = 150kg of holding power.Check you single magnet first then compare to the square of 25 ;)Consider using some plastic between magnet and surface so you can at least slide or pry it off if you have to.You can also combine magnets or a new one that has one side appear much stronger than the other.Meaning that for example on the north side it could hold 20kg while on the south side only 5.

how do i make a 12V electrical motor stronger? Answered

Im trying to make a batteryless die, and im now in the process of wrapping a plastic tube with copper wire, but after 200 times around, ive had enough (i need 2500!!!) so i decided to use a motor to do the hard work (wich would be faster also :D) so, i made a motor thats steadier, added a switch and a 9V battery, but it went to fast, with not enough power, resulting in ALOT of wire used, wich wasnt wrapped tight enough against the tube. so, i tried holding it with my hand to slow it down, but again, its not strong enough to pull the wire on strong enough. so, in a nutshell i need the motor stronger, not faster. like adding more horsepower instead of kilometers/hour...

Need help/advice (or an insctructable) on making a stronger wifi router, and then protecting it...

I have a wireless printer on my network which has been a godsend to me, but it requires the network to be unsecured (theoretically it can log into a secure network, but that just never works). I was fine with that at my old house, as my neighborhood's average age was about 60+, with my wife and I bringing that average down from 75+ due to being the only 30 somethings in the area. But we just moved, and I'm seeing already a half dozen leeches on my wireless, and about 6 dozen nearby strong signals all secured. So I can't secure my signal for the printer, but don't want to share... what am I to do? Another issue is added to the problem - the reason I moved to this house was the neighbor across the street from me is a long time friend, and we thought it would be a good idea to wirelessly network for lan games, as well as splitting the cost of a high speed line. But my signal dies somewhere in the middle of the street, and so does his! So now, I want to boost my signal to get it over to his house, strong enough to let him play games and download files without noticing any delays, PLUS keep it 'unsecured' so my printer can get into it, but still block out the rest of the neighborhood who is leeching off of my signal. Is there a solution possible?

reverse connected guitar pickups make strings resonate - how to make it stronger?

Hey all ,  im having a problem ,  i connected some guitar pickups to send frequencys instead of receiving , when close to a certain section of a piano , it makes the strings resonate , and i can play music thru the strings (i even get voice timbres) now , my problem is like that - the vibrations are extremely soft ,and i need to somehow make them stronger ,  i think one of the ways would be to magnetify the strings , but i would really like to know if there is a way to strengthen the pickup signal without blowing anything up , anyone has an idea? i think it has to do with electro-magnet power , so amplifing it should work , but adding a 5 watt small amp didn't make any diference...

How would a stronger magnet impact the performance of a speaker, and what impacts the overall quality of a speaker? Answered

Okay, so I had decided to build a sub-woofer for a speech topic for school, and I was wondering what it was that made speakers, or sub-woofers so loud an efficient. Granted, I know mine is far from great, while being made from ply-wood, duct-tape, and everything, but why is it that professionally manufactured speakers are so loud by them-selves with minimal power? I am using the circuits from my Logitech X-240 system, and the sub-woofer is always way louder than that of my home-made speaekr, with a significantly smaller ceramic magnet, it seems. Is it the geometry of the speaker itself, or what? What do manufacturers do in construction which improves the sound, or quality of speakers, and would using a neodymium magnet be better than using ceramic magnets? Any help is appreciated, and thank you in advance.

Is it possible to connect a usb cable to a laptop Wlan card and attache it to a dish for a stronger wifi signal?

I want to be able to take the mobile card, water proof it. Attache it to the back of the dish, run an antenna from the front also connected to the the cable with a power hookup. The idea is to raise the wifi signal as well as place the unit anywhere in the house to get a strong db. I was in Puerto Rico a few months ago and because the homes are sometimes built into the side of a hill the signals are weak. This challange should be easy but cheap and can be built with things that are availiable.  Broken computers, wires, discarded sat dish and batteries.

Electromagnetism question Answered

Hi I just saw something weird, it's not an exercise or a problem but I still have a question :  Let's say we have 2 electromagnets of unequal strengths X and X+Y; between them we have a ferromagnetic bar  Let's say one has south polarity and the other one north if we change which one is stronger ex 1st is X,  2nd is X+Y than a moment after 1st is X+Y and  2nd is X the bar will have the polarity of the stronger one for a moment, right? ex for a moment the electromagnet with the south pole is stronger X + Y = the bar will become south pole than we return it to its normal strength X and make the north pole electromagnet stronger X+ Y= the bar will become north pole, right? How will such variations of the strength of the magnetic field on 1 side affect the entire device, will only the bar change its polarity and it will stop somewhere on the border of the second magnet or will the second electromagnet change it's polarity too if the first one's is very strong? (just wondering) If we fix a coil on the ferromagnetic bar will such variations in the magnetic polarities of the bar induce current in it and how much, as much as we used to produce the fields of both electromagnets or only for the field of the stronger one, or only the difference between 2? and the last question in the terms of relation between the strengths of both electromagnets (let's say in %) how much Y should be to change the polarity of the bar without affecting the polarity of the second electromagnet?  Thank you all in advance for your interest, assistance and time :)

Convert AAA battery power to 12V jack?

So I figured out a really good option for my external rumble pack I want to make, I see these Wii lightguns use X2 AAA batteries and have a micro switch that engages the internal rumble motor on the handle of the gun. The batteries are connected to a microswitch and the switch is pressed after the trigger is physically pulled. How can I convert the AAA batteries power method into an external 12V power connector for continuous use and stronger motor vibrations etc? Like I said this is my first DIY thing. I want the AAA battery method to be converted to a stronger more capable 12V. I plan on buying some strong force feedback motors that need 12V. Eventually adding a small Solenoid too.

The Racker Rifle 2013

So I decided I didn't like my Racker Rifle that much anymore.  Mostly because it had one or two broken parts.  So I took TheDunkis's idea that he pitched to me on the original ible of using hinges for an even stronger trigger.  Turns out I could fit the new trigger mechanism in perfectly into the old gun body, so the gun from the outside looks almost unchanged.  The good thing though is that the trigger no longer uses a broken part and it is even stronger. The other change is that it has a modified SwagBoss handle on it for the ramrod, but I've had that on their for a while.  Thanks to The Foofinator. The internal picture is like 95% right, I tweaked one or two things after I took that picture before I put the whole thing together.
