3D LED Tic Tac Toe

I found this cool 3d LED Tic Tac Toe game on Make this morning. A 3x3x3 LED matrix connected to an Arduino allows you to play 2 or 3 player 3D Tic Tac Toe as red, green or blue. While the box isn't of the best quality it's a pretty neat idea and seems to work really well! [link to Make]

Playing Games In Session

Think students playing games on their laptops during class is bad? What about parliament members playing games during government policy sessions? The parliament of Bhutan, a small country in the Himalayas, has decided to ban laptops so that lawmakers will stop playing computer games while the Bhutanese parliament is in session. It is not however true that we were always playing games, said the MP, who is from the governing Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT). We need the laptops because that saves us the trouble of having to carry huge amounts of paper and documents. He makes a good point: playing game after game of tic-tac-toe does require a huge amount of paper. What games do you think they were playing?

Convert airgun/Paintball gun to be fired by a computer (12v solenoid valve)

Hi!I have a project this summer where I need to convert a paintball marker and a co2 Airpistol to be fired by the use of a solenoid valve powered by 12v.The project goal is high-speed photography, more or less photographing object being hit by a projectile. What i need is a way to fire these guns precisely by the use of my computer and software, and since I already have plenty of 12 solenoid valves that work with this system I thought my easiest way is to adapt these valve to trigger the guns one way or another.I just purchased a Valken V-TAC SW-1http://www.valken.com/Marker-V-TAC-BLACKHAWK which I plan to use as base (for parts) My reason for getting this particular one was that it was on sale for 50% and seems to be fairly popular as it's based on the Tippmann 98 design.I attached an image of the valve I used with my controller and software (Cognisys Stop shot) now I can probably use any 12v solenoid valve (with the same spec ?) as the one I use now so it doesn't need to be these exact valves. As long as they can be operated by turning on-off power with the same powersource i use to control my current solenoid valves. From my understanding, most airguns use a pin valve, which is hit by a trigger mechanism that is then rearmed by the blowback. What would be the best way to modify an airgun for my needs? Replace the pin valve with a suitable solenoid i can control instead? Or go for a design that uses maybe use a piston and 2-way valve to hit that pin?The gun does not need to be mobile or ergonomic, it will be placed in a rig regardless, however keeping the barrel and keep the Picatinny is preferred to be able to mount marking aids etc. and mount the gun to a tripod.Any tips or suggestions are highly appreciated!Thank you!

Console Game Ideas

For those of you who know what consoles are (I hope you all do) I have been coding one (yeah, like DOS) and I finally released it. For the next version, I am having it so the person can download what they desire from the internet. Currently, the only thing I can make it download is games. I need some ideas for games. I cannot do update graphics (meaning whatever goes on the screen stays on the screen, unlike modern games today) so if I want to do hangman, Everytime I make them guess a letter it must print out the hangman letters. I need ideas for games, and if you had ideas, that'd be great. I did tic-tac-toe and hangman already, checkers and chess and backgammon are all ruled out, so what should I do? Thank you! P.S. For the ones who want to see my console, go to http://github.com/konix-systems/Konix-One-0.01   :)

re-use of movie posters?

* hello, this is my first post on the forum, so i apologize if my comments are in the wrong place (just redirect me and i'll do what i can to fix it). however, if this is the right place... i snagged some movie posters when the apartment neighbors were moving because it seemed a shame to just trash them. originally, i thought it would be fun to turn them into envelopes of various sizes. when i tried it out however, they were not very durable. i tried using the search engine for the site, but only came up w/ ways to MAKE posters or put posters on furniture. i'm wondering if there is something small that i can make OUT OF these posters that is relatively simple. the posters themselves are probably of little value due to having tac holes or tape rips. any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. i'd like to make something i can send to others as i have no use for even more stuff in my life. thank you again! *

How to build a simple computer from a cardboard box (or 2) and some marbles?

Quite a few years ago (around 36-40) I read about a simple computer, made of a cardboard box, some dividers, and using 2 groups of colored marbles; whereas the object was to tilt the box  and one marble would fall through.  Depending on which of the 2 colors came through (pretty random) a move was made in the game (a simplified version of tic-tac-to).   Wrong moves were removed and eventually the "computer" learned to win the game every time. BUT I can find no reference to this, nor the book it was in.   I don't remember the title nor author, but it was very much like the book:  "1, 2, 3...Indiniry" by Gamow (it is not this book, I have it and have read it through several times looking for it).  I have been looking for this info for about 20+ years, and decided one of the more sciencey readers amongst you all might remember  it, the book or something to give me a clue to where to find this.

Homemade SAPI Plates anyone? Answered

So i just bought a bunch of new tac gear, but mainly a new plate carrier and a bunch of pouches. and while i was out there runin around out there feelin legit, i noticed that with all my gear, the vest kinda flops around without any plates. so im too lazy and cheap to buy a $30 useless hunk of square plastic that no one is ever going to notice, and i wondered, why not homebrew it? so if ANYONE has an instructable or knows how to make fake SAPI "ballistic plates" PLEASE reply...PLEASE          UPDATE- some people seemed to get the impression that im using this for real steel purposes. i can see why they would think that, since i was a bit vague on that part of the question. HELL NO. i will be using this for AIRSOFT. those are 6mm plastic bbs flying at speeds of 350 feet per second maximum. so just about anything works. and im wearing eye protection. so no one is shooting their eyes out either.

Black Ops II - K'NEX Weapon Versions "Wanted"

Hey Guys. Well, Black Ops 2 is a pretty sweet game, and I am sure you already know this. The thing you may not know is that many people, including me, would like to see K'NEX versions of those guns included in the game (and trust me, I plan on building some of these...). So without further adieu, I present to you pics of the Assult Rifles, LMGs (Light Machine Guns), Shotguns, Pistols, Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, and SMGs (Sub-Machine Guns) of Black Ops 2 (see names below). Assault Rifles (pics 2 - 8): 2) TYPE 25 3) AN-94 4) FAL-OSW 5) M8A1 6) M27 7) MTAR/FLATTOP TAR 8) SMR Light Machine Guns (pics 9 - 12): 9) QBB-LSW 10) HAMR 11) LSAT 12) MK-48 Pistols (pics 13 - 16): 13) Five-Seven 14) B23R 15) Exicutioner 16) TAC-45 Shotguns (pics 17 - 20): 17) S12 18) KSG 19) M1216 20) R870 Sniper Rifles (pics 21 - 23): 21) SVU-AS 22) Balista 23) DSR-50 Sub-Machine Guns (pics 24 - 29): 24) PDW-57 25) Chicom CQB 26) MP7 27) MSMC 28) Vector K10 Some of these guns seem pretty impractical, but they will be cool none-the-less. Getting started with PICAXE? Answered

I want to get started using PICAXE microcontrollers after using both PICs and AVRs before, and I have already learned the BASIC language, it's pretty easy, as the name would suggest. My main interests with them are that they can be easily programmed with two resistors and a 3-pin serial cable, they are easy to program and have ADC inputs, and also audio functionality. What would be a good place to get started, I was looking at the 08M, but it looks like it was recently discontinued and replaced by the M2. The reason I don't really want to move on is because I have just learned the pinouts and functions for the 08M, and also a lot of projects here on instructables utilize it. I was looking at building the tic tac tunes.I also noticed that it has the markings "12F683", so does this mean I could just buy a pic 12F683 chip and use it as a picaxe? Are they identical or is there a subtle difference in them. I also noticed that the audio functionality seems to be very limited in that the smaller chips only do polyphonic notes, and the mid sized chips only do mp3 from eeprom, and only the very large 40 pin chips do audio. What is the smallest chip that supports a full range sound file. Memory shouldn't be too much of a problem as the clip is only about a second long, so one with 256k should be fine, as long as it features internal audio. My last question is what should I buy, as in chips (universal and common experimentation chips), and any other accessories I may need. By the looks of things, all I need is the chip, a headphone socket, resistors, and a download cable.

TSA Security and why George Orwell is the New Nostradamas

This is basically ripped from Digg, but I'd much rather open discussion here rather than over on Digg as Digg isn't a discussion, just a horde of comments...Travelers at Sea-Tac and dozens of other major airports across America are being scrutinized by teams of TSA behavior-detection officers specially trained to discern the subtlest suspicious behaviors...Such people are referred for secondary screening, which can include a pat-down search and an X-ray exam. The microfacial expressions, he said, are the same across many cultures. ...a central task is to recognize microfacial expressions....ArticlePerhaps you've read Orwell's 1984 - if you haven't, do so.He did not know how long she had been looking at him, but perhaps for as much as five minutes, and it was possible that his features had not been perfectly under control. It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself—anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offence. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called.Digg Linked HereAgain a link to the Surveillance map - in which we (US) have joined the UK, Russia and China as an Endemic Surveillance society...LinkHow do you feel about your privacy?I say this as I personally have almost nothing but contempt for the TSA.... I say that as someone that almost always gets extra screening - so much that almost all of my flight tickets of the "SSSS" designation (indicating you get special screening without anyone picking you out).
