### mechanical wave

I'm trying to build a tail of a fake animal, and the tail is kinda long (total length of about 3 feet), I have a 10 pound pull solenoid and I want the tail to kind of do a wave thing, like if you were do a wave with your arms ( not in a group, all by yourself where you hold your hands together, you know what I'm talking about). I know how to do the electronic part of it by sending pulses to the solenoid, but How would I convert that into a believable tail?

While I was watching a show on the Science Channel about Black holes, it mentioned that black holes send out spiraling waves of gravity. If we were hit with said wave, ( on the occasion we survive a black hole) that had traveled from a far distance, would everything become much heaver and everyone would fall over? Would we lose our moon? What would/could happen?

### How to square wave ---> triangle wave?

Currently I have developed a flyback driver that is a semi-cross between a classic ZVS circuit and a 555 type driver, mainly just using a few comparators (one to create a triangle wave and 2 others to respond to the upper and lower peaks and drive MOSFETs. This allows me to create a modified sine wave with adjustable duty cycle.) This topology is even more powerful than the ZVS driver at 12V, as I got some INSANELY thick arcs!! However the MOSFETs get a little too warm, and I was forced to use sil pads to galvanically isolate the drain from the CPU heatsink. They seem to have really poor thermal characteristics as the heatsink stays cold while the transistors get uncomfortably hot within seconds!! To make this thing operate at the resonant frequency of the flyback, I think I will a feedback coil that would get "squared up" using a resistor and zener diode. I need to convert that signal into a triangle / sawtooth wave of fixed amplitude. A simple RC type circuit is not too suitable because as the frequency goes up or down, the amplitude of the voltage across the capacitor changes proportionally. What circuit will allow me to convert a square wave directly to a triangle wave of fixed amplitude????

### Leatherman: Surge or Wave?

Ok, so I want to buy a Leatherman. I have narrowed the choice down to the Surge or the Wave. The Surge has more tools, but you cannot have the file and the wood saw at the same time. The Wave has both. I am swaying towards the Wave at this moment, do any of you have Leathermans and would recommend a certain one?

### Square wave inverter?

I am building an inverter that will use a square wave pulse to drive MOSFET's at 50-60Hz. I have read and heard a lot of stuff that running square wave into a transformer is not a good idea, what I want to know how bad is it? Also will adding capacitors as seen in my image be able to smooth the square wave a bit to help the problem? If so what capacitance should I use? (About 200A input) (The 12V square wave is coming from paralleled MOSFET's)

### Will the Waves ever Die?

Think about it, the age is the Digital Dawn of the day, anologue Television is already being planned to me completely removed from the air waves in 2009 to make way for the "supposedly" DIGITAL SUPURIOUR HD crap. I don't watch that much TV to begin with so it doesn't bother me. But what about FM radio, is that ever going to die? Chances are probably not for a few years, seeing how the AM spectrum is still kicking around. How long can our traditional ways last? I'd be fairly sad to see FM leave the game. Really, we've had radio since the dawn of the technical age, from the 40's through the 80's (remember the days?). I just wanna see what anyone else has to say.

### Potentially revolutionary idea concerning remote power?

I learned in physics some time back that directing radio waves towards a metal object will induce an alternating current. My question is: Could you power something with an external but unconnected power source? I'm thinking something like a guitar with no lead that still manages to send back sound data to the amp. NB If this idea already exists, please tell me.

### Half-Wave Rectifier Question?

Hello Everyone, Well, I built a half-wave rectifier using a diode and a resistor, but it doesn't seem to be working as I want. I'm thinking of adding a capacitor to help smooth out the wave, but my whole purpose was to produce a pulse of energy at 60Hz. Basically, to just chop off the lower half of the sine wave. For my diode I used a 1N5406 rated at 600V and 3 amps. The resistors are rated at 20 watts and the whole thing just plugs into the electric outlet. It seems to work ok, but when I take this rectified output and put it into a transformer to step it up to around 1000V thats when I have a problem. After its stepped up its supposed to charge a small capacitor from which the electricity (when built up) will jump across a small spark gap. The spark gap is adjusted correctly, but he capacitor doesn't seem to like to charge on this wave. Its rated 2KV so voltage isn't the problem. The problem is that it will fire once, but not repeat the cycle.  (The transformer shouldn't be the problem because I'm pulsing the dc) Any Ideas? Thanks

### Power Sine Wave Circuit

Hi I am trying to build an economical circuit to power an AC electromagnet. The energy source has to be a battery, preferably less than 24v. The power draw of the electromagnet will be about 500W (the application requires a high-power alternating magnetic flux). I'm thinking of making a sine-wave generator and a simple transistor amplifier with high power transistors. Can anyone suggest circuits for this? My knowledge of electronics is not that great, but I'm quite enthusiastic about this and I believe I can give it a try. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks R

### Hydrofoil Surfing - A New Adrenalin Sport

Listening to Silvio Rivier, the host of Global Village, there was a section on Hydrofoil Surfing. I turned to the television, interested by this large word, to see this guy surfing a foot above the water! It seems that instead of floating along the water like a normal surfboard this board actually would be below the water while you stand on it. A jet ski pulls the surfer up to speed, bringing him up to the top of the water, but that's not it, there's a fin that leads down a foot and a half or so below the board, and attached to the end of that is a special shaped piece of metal called a hydrofoil that collects the water as it comes up from the bottom of the sea and goes over as a wave. The surfer then keeps going upwards, until the "foil" is about 4 inches under the water. Therefore the surfer can balance above the water, with very little resistance & going very fast. It's technically possible that this could be used for surfing not just close to land, but hundreds of miles out, so the person can surf for as long as their legs hold out, because they can surf in rougher water. Does any body think they could build one of these? Balancing on one is supposed to be like using a uni-cycle, & I'm having trouble surfing normally so even if I did build this I probably couldn't ride it. This goes out to Laird Hamilton, the creator of this funky board, & I'm looking forward to an Instructable. Cheers everybody, ~K P.S. The links aren't working so I'll add them as soon as possible. Neither is the video button, sorry about that, I'll have to add a picture instead.

### How to send and receive an electrical signal?

I don't know much about radio waves and oscillator circuits , AM/FM and stuff, but I need to send just electrical signals wirelessly, without any information on it, to some other device which activates when it would detect the signals. I would prefer to make the devices myself, if it is possible, without needing to buy anything, like RF oscillators and other stuff.    I was told that whenever electricity passes through a wire, a radio wave is emitted outwards from the wire, and is emitted every time the current flow stops, starts or changes direction,  I was also told that whenever a radio wave crosses a wire, it induces a very small current in it. I don't know if whether the above information was correct or not but I think I can use it in making such a device.

### Why is a modified sine wave harmful to electronics? Answered

I was reading an article in a computer magazine about UPS (Uninterruptible power supplies). It said that UPSs produce a modified sine wave. However it said that using a modified sine wave to operate computers over long periods is harmful. I wonder how a modified sine wave could damage a computer. All it is is just a sine wave that steps instead of a perfect curve. Right?

### Sound wave heart beat detection

I love to graph things. Everything from outside temperature to server room temperature to the number of users on the network to my weight.I just read an article in Make magazine about DIY ECGs, and it got me thinking.. i want to graph more things about my body :)Would a microphone embedded in the bed be able to pick up the heart beats and calculate the BPM? This way I could graph development in resting heart rate over time. The microphone would pick up lots of noise from the person moving around etc.. but that doesn't mather. It only needs to get a few clean heart beats in order to calculate the bpm, right? What hardware and software would be suitable to create something like this?Any ideas?Yeah, of course there are other more traditional ways of measuring heart beat.. but I'm to lazy to do that.. I'd rather spend some time making a fully automagickal system.

### Audible frequency amplitude modulation of 20kHz carrier for diffraction demo. Answered

I am attempting to build an audio projector that takes advantage of the low diffraction of high frequency audio waves. Audible range frequencies diffract more than, say 20kHz, so I want to modulate a 20kHz carrier wave by an audible range source, hoping that the carrier wave will be maintained for longer distances (like a beam of sound), and that my ear will ultimately perceive the audible input being delivered on the carrier wave. My question is: Should I be aiming to produce an AM Radio type modulation that has an envelope of the input both above and below, mirrored across the x axis? Or should I try to make it so the final signal has the same shape as the source wave, just filled in with 20kHz carrier? Also, is a square wave carrier sufficient, or will it need to be a sine wave?
