Homemade Bandolier? Answered

Hey there instructables! I'm planning to make a homemade bandolier that carries 12 gauge shotgun shells, but I was just wondering.... Are the loops on bandoliers elastic, or just straps of canvas or something? Which would look like a cooler bandolier, denim or black canvas?(Your Opinion) I never sewed cloth before, I'm planning to use a sewing machine, do you have any tips, and advice when sewing canvas or denim? If I use something elastic, how could I keep the bandolier from curling up? Thanks A few of my 12 gauge shotshells..hahahaha....

Since the other questions have been answered, I will focus on this one only:

I never sewed cloth before, I'm planning to use a sewing machine, do you have any tips, and advice when sewing canvas or denim?

First and foremost, use the "proper" needle. It needs to be heavier (especially for the denim) than a normal sewing needle; same then goes for the thread.

You could totally use elastic. You don't have to space elastic. Just get a wide strip of it and sew every inch or so, the width of the bandolier. The elastic is stretchy, so it will stretch to the right size to fit whatever ammo you put in there.

Just a thought. You can get a black 1 from Cabella's for 10 bucks. It holds 50. I was gonna make 1 too but by the time you buy the stuff and try to figure out how to space the elastic, it would be a real task. Good luck.

all of the shotshell loops i have seen have been with an elastic material. i personally believe denim would look cool, but i would hem the edges as denim loves to fray.

The only one I've handled was a heavy canvas strap with slightly elastic loops. That was military issue, though. If you're sewing with a machine, make sure you have the right needle - heavy fabrics can snap needles that are too thin, and the splinter can ping across the room.

> Are the loops on bandoliers elastic, or just straps of canvas or something? . Most of the ones I've seen use elastic. . > Which would look like a cooler bandolier, denim or black canvas?(Your Opinion) . Of the two, I prefer denim. Black shows dirt too well. . > I never sewed cloth before, I'm planning to use a sewing machine, do you have any tips, and advice when sewing canvas or denim? . Nope. I don't do much sewing. . > If I use something elastic, how could I keep the bandolier from curling up? . Keep it full. The weight of the shells will overcome most (if not all) of the curl.
