I am looking to make a light-up Skateboard with EL wire. What power source/ inverter would I need to use to power it? Answered

This project is for my AS lighting project. I am really interested in using EL wire, but am slightly confused at what power source I would need to use to power the circuit. I was also wondering whether I need to use an inverter.

Bear in mind EL wire isn't very bright at all. You need an inverter, because it takes a high voltage to make it work at all.

Thanks :) do you know the specific voltage I would need to drive a circuit containing about 1.5 meters of EL wire? In terms of the brightness, the EL wire would be be more for style rather than to actually provide added safety, so I think it would be suitable

The voltage is usually around 500V, the CURRENT varies - its only a few milliamps.

In my experience, the stuff only looks good when its good and dark.

El wire companies on the web sell battery operated power sources, if you don't want to make one yourself.
