More search box suggestions Answered

I know there are a lot of these suggestions but I think this one shouldn't be overly difficult. Could the search function, when no instructables are returned for a specific keyword, automatically search for members instead and return those results if there are any? Most of the time when I want to get to a member's profile page I stick their username in the search box, search, it tells me there aren't any instructables called "gmjhowe" or whoever, I click people and search again, it gives me the search result, I click on it, get to where I was going.

Why necessarily members? Why not have it automatically fail over to forum topics? Or comments? Or answers (when that exists)? It seems to me that the default for the masthead "generic" search really ought to be "ALL". Then when the bazillion results show up, the user can refine the search via the pulldown menu. I agree with you that having the default generic search be for I'ble only is a bit restrictive, given the much broader participation of the community.

Very good point. I suppose the actual solution would be to have the pulldown next to the search box on the front page, defaulting to all.

Well, that little search box is on every page; it's part of the masthead. Things like that should be smaller and inconspicuous (like the row of You items), I think. Also, the search word next to the box is a link to the full search interface (such as it is :-).

As an aside, given the woefully limited functionality of I'ble built in search, you are almost always better off just using Google, and adding the qualifier "site:www.instructables.com" to your query.
