Why do the voting stars not appear under Firefox or Chrome, but they do appear under IE?
Some time ago, I got into the habit of using Firefox to use Instructables.com because the layout worked better there than in IE. I went away from the site for awhile, then came back, and I thought you had gotten rid of the 5-star voting system. Then I viewed the page in IE while logged in, and I discovered that the stars are there.
The attached image shows screenshots of the same URL (https://www.instructables.com/id/Grip-grip/) viewed in three different browsers.

It's a BUG that the staff is aware of and is currently trying to resolve.

I've found a few work-arounds but none of them are 100% reliable. Here are the 3 of them:
- Reload the page. That works... occasionally.
- Click on the authors username, then from their list of ibles, choose the one you'd like to rate and open it. The rating system will often magically appear.
- I also tried disabling the "View all steps on one page" feature. That has worked when the above steps didn't, but I'm unsure if this work-around is foolproof.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but hopefully one of the back doors will help until this persistent bug gets exterminated. ;-)8 years ago
You can try updating your Java to the latest one. It doesn't always update and you need the new version for things to work correctly.

Make sure your copies of Firefox and Chrome are up to date. I'm having no problem viewing the starts in any browser. I use Chrome as my primary browser.
