Zune HD pinout

Hello every one.  Here is the short version: I would like to know the pinout of the Zune HD (connector).   Now, as there may be more than one solution to my problem (and for those of you who are curious :P), here is the rest of the story: I had a Zune 4gb and an Altec Lansing speaker dock that went with it. I recently purchased a Zune HD 16gb. I love it, but the only problem is that the pinout of the two Zunes are not the same (or at least that’s what I’m assuming), so I am not able to use my speakers with my new Zune. I am only able to use it as a charging dock. Here’s what I know so far:   -I know most of the pins on the old Zune, thanks to zuneboards.com. -I know the speaker is still functional; I tested it with my old Zune. -And I know the new and old Zunes share at least one ground wire, one +5v supply wire, and both USB data transfer wires, as the dock charges both Zunes, and I am able to sync and charge both Zunes with both new and old sync cables.   Once I find out which pins are for audio, I am planning on opening the speaker case and reconnecting the audio wires (which I was able to identify using the old Zune pinout) to accept the pinout of the new Zune.  I have plenty of experience with electronics of all kinds, so I would be more that comfortable doing something like this, but I am more than open to any solution that is… less invasive, as I would like to avoid the risk of damaging my speakers.   If any of you fine folks have any answers about the pinout or suggestions for alternate solutions, or comments at all for that matter, I would be very grateful.   Thanks all, -jpenn

Re: dipole HD antenna?

I noticed in Home Depot 4' x 8' sheets of metal lathe used for putting stucco on housing exteriors.  It was cellular with each cell being an elongated hexagon approx 5/8 inches in length.  The long sides of each cell had been bent at 20-30 degrees (guess) to provide a cavity based substructure for the stucco.  My thoughts went to the fractal antenna posted by williamruckman  on Jan 3, 2009.  An interior attic roof would provide an invisible and safe location similar to the entry point for a dish cable.  The lathe could be shaped virtually without limitation for tuning.  Thoughts??  VR?

Knex HD Circular Saw

This Circular Saw that you see here is one of the many knex things i've been working on, but have not shown you guys because of not really wanting to post anything in the past... however long it was. A little more about this saw is: it is the first Circular Saw on this site if i'm not wrong. If this saw was real; it would have a Gasoline engine for power and instead of a motor being in the old motor compartment, it would have a massive spindle brake so that it stopped spinning faster. Some things that is saw lacks is the fuel tank, the blade guard, and an on/off switch. I would have loved to add those things to it, but I ran out of some parts that were vital to their creation. A quick fact about the blade; The blade's diameter is 8 7/8" or roughly 225mm. The blade's thickness is about 7/10" or 17.8mm thereabouts. Overall, I think that it turned out alright but could have been much better. Still something to look at every now and then I suppose. It was fun to make, and was something to do.

Can anyone tell me for sure what material the Western Digital HD are made? They shine like mirrors and seems steel. Answered

I dismantled an old WD HD 2.5 Gb to use the neodymium magnet, and to my surprise I found that instead of a disc, it had three, stacked. I was also surprised for its mirror finish, I expected a dark brown surface, like floppies. Can anyone tell me for sure what material they are made the discs? Aluminum is not, must be steel, but it must be stainless steel or be well covered, because they shine like mirrors.

External HD wont power down??

Hey guys, i was wondering if perhaps someone has a similar drive like mine. For some reason, on my ibook, when plugged into firewire, it powers down automatically after 5 or so minutes of not being used, that's good. But I just cleared it off and formatted it for NTFS and put it on my server, via firewire aswell, and while data transfer and everything seems to be fine, the hard drive does not spin down, ever. And when I feel it, I can feel the heads clicking, when there's no program accessing it on my server that I can see. Perhaps it doesn't get the chance to spin down..Either way, I'm concerned about the heat it makes, and mostly, about it's longevity. Does anyone have a solution?? Is there some patch for xp that makes external drives power down??

*UPDATE: AAARRRGGGG ! Looks Like my BOOT got a hole in it.......

Soooo, I guess I am buying a new HD.   So far all attempts to boot the machine to Windows has left me with ChkDsk looping on an error it can not fix.  If I could just get Ubuntu to boot to ROOT so I can transfer all my admin files, I wouldn't care so much abouit losing the HD.   So far, I've spent a full 12 hours working on it......I even did a full "restore" from the repair disk.....nothing changed, but nothing failed during the restore....so something is not quite right. This also means I will be on line in a MUCH more limited fashion than before. Replaced the HD.....had a LOT of problems until  I realized the machine still saw the old drive and kept trying to run CHKDSK on it.    New HD 320gb installed an up.....tomorrow, we deal with installing the firewall, and maybe, if I have some time,  a few other things  (like a word processor, etc).    What a day its been though !  I STILL can't get ON LINE at home....not from windows anyways.....still no firewall.....sigh...this is gettin ridiculous...

usb enclosure hack

Current inventory: 2 Seagate ST340015A IDE hds (40 gb each) 1 Rosewill External usb 2 ide enclosure (pl2506 controller chipset) 1 40 conductor ide cable (mobo-slave-master) soldering iron/solder way, wayyy to much free time. OK, given the above items, is it possible to run both drives at the same time from the one enclosure? Fitting inside the enclosure is not an issue. So far, I have removed the original ide cable the came with the enclosure controller. And, installed my own ide cable. The only drive that is detected is the one jumpered as master, at either location on the cable(master vs slave). No matter what the other drive is jumpered as(slave, cable select), it is not detected. I tried setting both as master and neither are recognized. I have run out of ideas... suggestions would be great. And please dont suggest getting another enclosure. IM CHEAP!

DIY projector using phone LCD screen.

Hello every body. My first post on these forums, and here goes. I have been looking into projectors and considering the cheaper route of building my own. As I want the projector to be HD and small at the same time, I figured one of the newer phone screens would be suitable (which I have located a reseller of). I do not have any particular screens in mind. To get to the point though, are there any controllers out there that would allow me to connect a screen with dvi / hdmi? As with larger tft panels where you can buy a kit, or such as the device used to bridge the LVDS to hdmi connectors (one example here). I have been unsuccessful in my search for these so far. I assume that most of the screens use different connectors rather than a common standard data connector, which could hinder this. Thanks for your time.

Is my ibook like..Dead?

Well, apon leaving my ibook on for the past year or two almost non stop, I've come to the conclusion that perhaps the hard drive is a little deadish. Apps open really slow, and sometimes they lock up, VLC player can lock my mac up pretty easy depending on what I'm playing. Oh yeah, and for some reason java apps really bloats my mac down, does anyone find that? Like limewire or similar apps, it jacks my cpu's temp through through the roof. Now my itunes and it's 20 gig music collection won't open, well it does, but the spinning beachball thing appears, and shortly thereafter locks up finder and pretty much any other application I have open, even dock is hard to race to, to force quit it. Would it be worth it to go out and buy a 7200rpm drive instead of a regular 5400rpm laptop hd? I'm guessing I might actually get quite a performance boost, but I'm unsure if it's worth $120. Does anyone have any suggestions?

IDE hard drive wont spin up in external array, using hacked power supply.....?

So after building my new computer I had three old IDE 250gb and two 40gb hard drives.  I took some scrap aluminum and built a rack to mount the drives on. I hacked an old power supply and made a power supply for the drives. I bought 4 IDE to USB connectors and ran then into a USB hub. For some reason the power supply turns it self off a few seconds after plugging in the 250's. It will run the 40's no problem and the system instantly recognizes them.  The jumpers are all set to slave. When I individually try them with my single IDE to USB kit they work fine. 400w for just 5 drives should be more than enough power. Please help me out. Specs. building a HD Audio front panel for my PC. Audio circuit?

Hi! I have problem with my computer. the motherboard has HD-Audio but the front panel is the usual AC97 standard. You can change the BIOS config so the front panel audio connector acts as an AC97 one, but then the problem is the speakers connected to the back keep playing even if you connect a set of headphones to the front panel. The reason is the audio jacks used for HD-audio are different from regular jack connectors (and very rare to find!). While the insertion of the plug in a regular jack connector results in breaking a circuit (and so, physically muting the loudspeakers), in an HD Audio jack, the insertion of the plug results in closing a switch (sending a signal to the driver ordering to mute the speakers by software). I managed to create a sort of HD audio Jack by combining a regular jack connector and a zero pressure micro-switch so when the plug enters the hole, a tip inside the hole closes the micro-switch. I wanted to make a good quality front panel so instead of just wiring the jack connectors (and micro-switches) to the cable, I decided to add an EMI filter. I took the circuit from this doc: http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/A2928604-005.pdf and more precisely from fig 6 at page 25. The circuit uses two 220 pF capacitors and two inductors for each jack connector. In this aspect the circuit is identical to that proposed for AC97. The problem is I have no idea what inductors to use or how to ask for them at the shop. All the diagram says in a footnote is: ZL should be 600 Ohms or greater @ 100MHz with a low Q (broad Impedance curve over frequency) but not even the guys at the shop knew what piece to give me. So what I did was to cannibalize the inductors from two cheap promotional radio receivers with jack connectors for the headphones and use them for my circuit. After all, they perform the same function: filter the audio signal at the headphone connector so I supposed they should have the correct values I needed. But my circuit is very noisy! headphones have a constant electronic background noise (that seems to react to things like mouse movements, hard disk activity or whiteness of the screen) and microphone has a lot of noise (of course I'm using very good quality mic+headphone). The cables are audio cables for front panel audio so they are supposed to be correctly shielded so the problem is in the circuit at my custom board. I would like to make a tutorial (including HD Audio connector construction) once the front panel is working properly but I don't know how to fix it. Any ideas?

What Version of HDCP Does the Xbox 360 Require? Other HD Questions...NERD ALERT!

I might get an Xbox 360 some day (say I win the lottery). My HD TV has support for version one of HDCP (High Definition Content Protection, supposed to protect against copying, yeah right). Is version one sufficient to use an Xbox 360 with my TV? Also I only have one DVI port on my TV, no HDMI (it's two years old, my dad kinda jumped into it). We have our HDTV Star Choice satellite receiver hooked up to that, so I don't wanna have to swap out the satellite for the 360 everytime I wanna play in HD (I have a CRT TV in my room which I usually play games on). Can I get a Y shaped switcher thingy for my TV? I know DVI, unlike HDMI, doesn't support all in one audio and video in one tiny HDMI cable. Does the 360 have a seperate output for audio, too?

Ok, here we go.....

I have one more piece of info to get yet, before I wipe and restore my OS. Wish me luck, I have never done this before....I don't know what might be involved, and what might hinder my getting back to the place I was before; and, hopefully unlike a stay at Hotel California, I will be able to return to the place I was before (I would also like to get some projects out this weekend....what are the chances, do you think?
