student arrested for camera tazer... are dangerous instructables acceptable?

Well, a 14 year old boy in Connecticuit was arrest for modifing a disposable camera into a tazer, making it into a weapon. Well you may have noticed that instuctables shows multiply how to's on this very weapon. My question is, should dangerous and illegal instructables be tollerated on this site? I think anything that dangerous, or illegal should be taken off the site even though they are just for "informational purposes". I'm not saying that it is instructables or any authors of those instructions fault, but i think that there have to be more guild lines for what is acceptable.link to article: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080403/technology/technology_shocking_camera

Thoughtcrime 2.0

The BBC says 2007 was a big year for bloggers being imprisoned. Worldwide there were 36 confirmed cases of people being arrested for blogging and certain organizations suspect, but cannot verify, that hundreds of more people were."The report predicted that the number of blogger arrests in 2008 would exceed the 36 seen in 2007 thanks to greater popularity of blogging as a medium, greater enforcement of net restrictions, and elections in China, Pakistan, Iran and the US."

Student arrested for making disposable camera Taser

The capacitors inside disposable cameras pack a pretty big wallop and it's recommended that you act very carefully around them. If you don't you'll get zapped. And if you set it up so that someone else could get zapped you might even get arrested like this 14-year-old kid from Connecticut. linkvia boingboing

Powering a device from radio waves?

I was just curious, but I was told someone was arrested fpr powering their house from a tv signal (illegal I know), but I was wondering if there would be any case where it would be legal to utilise my own RF signal as the source of power for some devices, and how is it possible?

Distance Alarm?

Hello, I am interested in seeing if I can create some sort of alarm for my 10 year old son.  He has autism and I'm looking for something kind of like a house arrest ankle bracelet BUT i don't want it to track where he is. (Not at this point anyway).   For now i just want to see if I can make a distance alarm.  I would strap a bracelet to his ankle and I could carry the alarm unit in my pocket to If he got more than 100 feet from my device I would hear an alarm.  He has an issue with wondering away and the electronic monitoring companies want to charge hundreds of dollars to put a house arrest type monitor on him.  If i could make  something that would warn me when he starts to wonder that would be amazing! Can anyone point me in the correct direction? Thanks

Zombie fiction: illegal in Kentucky.

A Kentucky student has been arrested under anti-terrorist legislationWinchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class."My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."I originally found this story through Groxx. The article is here, and if you want to pass comments on to the relevant people, their contact details are here.

So much for Airport Security, eh?

Lateral Thinker forwarded this one to me and I thought it would be of general interest. Two people suspected of stealing up to 1000 pieces of luggage from baggage claim carousels at a US airport have been arrested by police who found piles of the stolen bags strewn throughout their home. There were so many suitcases that Phoenix police could only give a rough estimate of their number... Go here for the 'rest of the story'...

How likely is it that my ISP is limiting me because im a pirate?

I used to be able to download items from torrent sites like "The Pirate Bay" using "Limewire"or "Bit torrent" but now I cant? I will look at the torrent site and it will say like 15 seeders and like 1 leecher or something good like that but my Limewire and Bittorrent says that I have no seeders or peers and will stay at 0% forever? What is going on? Will the RIAA drop by my house any second to arrest me? Is my ISP screwing me over? Am I just doing something wrong? And I am using The Pirate Bay to download the torrents.

Cyber War with a Shovel?

A 75 year old woman has cut Armenia off from the internet. Whilst scavenging for copper in neighbouring Georgia, Hayastan Shakarian accidentally severed the fibre-optic cable connecting all three of Armenia's internet wholesale providers, and the whole country was cut off for almost 12 hours until after midnight on the night of 28th March. The pensioner has been arrested, and could face three years in prison, but has been released pending the completion of the investigation and the result of the prosecution. Armenian websites identified Shakarian as Armenian herself, not Georgian, and questioned the credibility of an old lady causing the blackout, claiming similar damage in Georgia has caused problems for Armenia in the past. For Star

I want to do something for star...as you know, she was arrested for having a "fake bomb" hoodie. Read more here. The problem is that we all live so far apart, we can't have any sort of protest, like was had for the tazed kid at UF. I'm trying to think of things we could do to show our support that doesn't require mass gatherings. So one idea that came to mind was having the front be a picture like what she had on hers, and on the back, some kind of a message. Do you like that idea? Do you have any others? Just like..discuss, and we can try and find the best thing to do. If we do decide to make shirts (iron on paper) maybe we could all wear them monday, or something?

Equal Rights for Robots

Not trying to spam/ad to the fire of religious debate or any of that, but recently I saw this post on Digg about this kid at Kutztown University who showed up at a religious protest, and to counter their craziness, he held up a sign that quite randomly and humorously said "Equal Rights for Robots." For some reason he was arrested minutes later. He may or may not have had the appropriate permit, but this seems a little insane, especially given the fact that these non-students were practicing hate speech, while a student was holding up a funny sign. Here's a link:http://www.basementcoder.com/?p=23But all of that bullcrap aside, the reason I came to you is because I figured everyone here likes robots, right? Well, I think we should take a stand, and SUPPORT EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ROBOTS too!!!https://static.instructables.com/deriv/FH6/5K3R/F03WEWYE/FH65K3RF03WEWYE.MEDIUM.jpgThink of the Robot Children!

Cops suck.

First of all, I am going to say this out of experience and not from memes or from public opinion. Two days ago, I changed a shortcut icon to redirect to another website on a school computer. Well, I got caught after someone fell for it, and then the teacher told me that I could get in serious trouble for it. He got some cops to tell me how bad it was, and afterward, I was wondering how stupid they were. First of all, they said I shut down the system. I did not do that, I just changed the link. Second, they said I was "scarier than a thug with a gun because I could hack their computers and get all the passwords". I can do no such thing, what makes them think that a simple prank automatically makes me a "1337 hax0r"? Then they said I could be arrested for just that prank, but they decided to let me off because I was not aware of those rules. Cops suck. (at least the ones in this area do) EDIT- It seems like my email to the teacher completely backfired. The teacher COMPLETELY misunderstood the point of my message.

The Secret Service is Calling Me! Help!!

Hi Friends,Recently someone has been calling me on my cell phone about 3 times a day saying they are the secret service from a private Caller ID. It is someone from my high school. I think they are using a spoof card because the phone number is blocked or the white houses number. It is really starting to piss me off and I need some help. They have called about 7 or 8 times in the last 2 days. Its really annoying. I called sprint to see what they could do but all they said was that I would need to contact local law enforcement to put it to a stop. The worst part is they are not only wasting there own and my own time but they are also working away at my phone bill. So, I need your help. What do you think I should do, contact the local police and get the perpetrator(s) arrested for impersonating a government member or should I try something else such as taking the law into my own hands (phone trap/ back spoofing)Thanks for all your help.Joe Rowley

The Avanti group news reviews – IRS issues, Chirpstory

http://chirpstory.com/li/77898 There’s word of a new tax-related scam and officials want to make sure you don’t get duped. If you get a call claiming to be from the IRS saying you owe more tax money which you need to send immediately or face arrest — don’t fall for it. IRS spokesman David Stewart says ask the caller his name and badge number and hang up. “Then you what you do is call your local office and you say ‘hey got this person Sam Smith badge number 12-2 and he wants to know information about X. Is there something wrong with my return?’” He says if there is a problem and the person calling you is legitimate, the local office will know and be able to help, and remember the IRS will never ask you for personal information or bank information over the phone or in an e-mail. Any information they might need would already be on your tax return SOURCE: http://avanticonsultinggroup.wordpress.com/tag/tag-code-81345782170/ Related Article: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/14526283-the-avanti-group-reviews-article-code-81345782170-hk-ron-paul-slams-stability-of-us-dollar-and-bitcoin-in-progold-rant/images Related Video: http://www.metacafe.com/videos_about/pr_code_81345782170/

Geek-Protection Stickers? Call for design suggestions!

So, Star's in jail in Boston for forgetting she was wearing some electronics.I sent this to Xeni Jardin, and she added it to the BoingBoing story:Star was an intern at Squid Labs this summer, and is an all-around awesome geek who loves to build things. FYI, friends at MIT say she wears the hoodie on a regular basis- it's just unfortunate that she had it on while trying to pick a friend up at the airport. MIT students don't really do mornings, or worry about what they're wearing, so I can't imagine she'd even think about her clothes before heading out to pick up a friend at the airport before 8am.When Star gets out we'll have her do an Instructable on 1) how to get arrested at the airport without being shot, and 2) how to package your homemade electronics to look purchased.Maybe BB and Instructables should start handing out some official-looking stickers and plastic covers to make breadboards look more commercial- it will keep our readers away from automatic weapons. I just got email back from Xeni saying, "Let's do those stickers!"Question: what should the stickers look like? What should they say? Make some suggestions, or submit some designs here, and we'll print them up!

Serious Notice guys n gals concerning me.......

Hey, just wanted to let you all know (so, maybe I put this in the wrong forum) that I am up this early in the morning ( 6:30 am ) because I have to go to the hospital for a complete cardiac / pulmonary workup and battery of tests. Yeah, getting older stinks, especially if you let you physically self atrophy. Anyway, just wanted you all to know, in case you don't see me for a few days or longer (the tests only last about 4 hours or so, but they could potentially bring on cardiac arrest, or trigger a severe asthma attack, depending on the kind of shape I am in ( it is kind of a pregnant pear shape actually ). See you all when I am back from the hospital....Addendum: I have a lowered amount of blood flow to my heart. What this means is that I am a borderline heart attack candidate if it gets any worse. Cholesterol was a little high, triglycerides way high. I will find out details on Friday I suppose when we discuss options...Addendum 2: The pulmonary tests ( 05/21/2008 ) were horrible, but there doesn't seem to be anything overly wrong that is obvious to the tech, with my lungs.....will have to wait for the doc's report thoughAddendum 3: Well, I am afraid things have progressed to the next step... I have to have a heart cauterization to see what may be blocking the lower artery, and how bad the blockage is. If not too bad, they will simply do a quick angioplasty and open it up, but if bad, I will then be scheduled for a bypass. *sigh* as we age the fun just never ends, eh ? Addendum 4: It will not be THIS coming week, but most likely next week, they will do the double bypass. Because of the location of the blockage at a major branch which would end up cutting off flow to the other artery, they have decided I best have the bypass done. PS: there was hardly ANY pain in the cath procedure.....I am going to give the person that told me that a hard time next time I see them :-) But I have experienced broken bones already, so I know the next step is not going go be a picnic. Addendum 5:I may be able to get the bypass done as early as Monday the 9th Yay ! Addendum 6:I am now into my second week of recovery, and things are progressing so well, my wife is afraid I will want to go back to work early and she will be alone again.

My mystery story

I'm in 8th grade and I have to write a mystery, please leave feedback and suggestions. I just want to make sure that this mystery would make sense to someone else, someone else who didn't write it. A rich man laid dead in his room with a will next to his body. He had many cuts and died from blood loss. As the police asses the situation they notice a knife next to him, the police thought suicide. Then they noticed a bloody will next to him, on the will it said that he would leave everything he owns to his butler. The inspector, inspector Higgins, found that it was odd the late Mr. Light left nothing to his wife, Mrs. Light who was sobbing next to the inspector. “Where were you when your husband was murdered?” asked inspector Higgins. “I was out shopping, I was getting him a Christmas gift.” Answered Mrs. Light “Do you have proof of this?” “Why yes, yes I do! Here’s a receipt from Kronix, the fancy watch store.” “Hmmmm. Here on the receipt you bought it about an hour ago, there would be have plenty of time for you to have commit this murder.” “How dare you say such a thing!?! I loved my husband, and I can explain about the time frame, Kronix is about an hour away, so it takes me time to get here!” “Ok, ok, ok, but what about this butler of yours, where is he?’ “I don’t know, he should be in the house.” The inspector and the police searched the house. The inspector came to a closet door and tried to open it, but it only opened an inch. “Officer, please help me open this door,” said the inspector. After much pushing they got the door open enough so that the slim inspector could slip into the room where he saw a shocking sight. “The butler’s in here, he was laying next to the door, and he appears to be dead from cuts.” Paramedics came rushing in . “He’s not dead, he’s merely unconscious, and we must get him to a hospital. A day later when the butler made enough of a recovery to talk. “Mrs. Light killed Mr. Light, she started slashing at me, but then I ran into the closet, which was foolish. She attacked me in there and I passed out, she must have thought I was dead.” Whispered the butler. “You’re under arrest for the murder of Mr. Light.” Announced the inspector towards the butler. How did he know the butler killed Mr. Light? The solution: When Inspector Higgins found the butler he was laying next to the door. According to the butler’s story he was being attacked in the closet, which means the murder would have to leave, which would have been impossible because the butler’s body kept the door from opening.
