Bait & Switch

Thanks for the Bait & Switch.... Page prices for quarterly are shown as $3.95 per quarter. So I selected it, as it would be cheaper than the 2 year term over the same period. Got to checkout and it was switched to $11.95 a I was forced to purchase the 2 year plan....trying to save a few dollars on the subscription you know. Feel free to refund the difference between the $3.95 per quarter(advertised on your site)  for 2 years opposed to the $39.95 I had to pay. THANKS AUTODESK!

Trapping water frogs

Hi my name is Werner I am from South Africa, and a very enthusiastic angler (freshwater). I wonder if anyone can assist me with regard to a cheap and simple way to  make  my own  frog trap to trap water frogs, as I use these frogs for bait when targeting catfish. Any ideas and assistance will be appreciated.

Humane Trap Ideas

Okay, so we've got critters in our attic...Probably Wolf Rats or something....I've tried using a large bucket with a board ramp. On top of the bucket I've got a towel laid across the top. For bait, I've used bread with peanut butter. My trap idea just doesn't seem to work.... The animals steal the bread without fallin' in! They're smart.... Any other ideas? Thanks! :)

The FootHold Snare

One day, you might find yourself lost in the woods while camping! One day, the stock market will crash and are YOU ready to survive? Traps and Snares are one of the most important things while surviving. Blake Alma, the founder of The Art of the Outdoorsman once said, "A trap is as someone else hunting for you when you can't, it is truly your best hunting buddy!" This is so true. Unlike fishing poles and firearms, traps and snares work when you are sleeping! Hence, learning how to make a simple snare indeed helpful and lifesaving for it is an art of an outdoorsman! Let's get started on this foothold snare. You need: A shovel, 550 lb. test paracord, and bait. Note: There are laws regarding trapping. Step 1: Digging your Hole Picture of Digging your Hole I hope you got a good shovel and back! You will need to dig a hole 2 to 3 feet deep. Yes, I know it is a true pain, but it can save your life or get you free food! Diameter of your Hole: - Raccoon/Opossum/Mink/Groundhog/Large Rabbit (6 inches) - Coyote/Fox/Bobcat (8 inches) - Animals under 550 pounds/Deer/Small Elk/Very Small Bear/ect. (12 to 18 inches) Step 2: Camouflaging After digging your hole, add leaves, thin sticks, tree bark, or grass over the hole. Do not put to much "camouflage" over the hole or else you may prevent the animal from falling down in the hole. Step 3: The Snare Wrap the paracord around a stick or you finger making a small loop. Tie the small loop, and pull your finger out. Make sure the knot is very strong. Put the other end of the paracord through the small loop. You should then have a giant loop, known as the snare itself. Make the loop's (snare) diameter slightly smaller than your hole's diameter. Tie the snare extra line around a tree, sapling, or log near by. Make sure it holds. Place the snare itself over the hole, on top of the "camouflage". Step 4: The Path of the Least Resistance Sense the animal has plenty of ground to step on, it might be hard to get him in your hole. Hence you need to create a the path of the least resistance. You need to make him limited to where the animal will step. Make a path to your foothold snare using leaves, sticks, logs, and grass. Make it easy for the animal to walk through. Like us we want to walk on a nice smooth sidewalk, not on a beaten trail. They want to walk on a path with the least resistance, they don't want step on pointy sticks. They want to step were the feel most comfortable. That is way you need to make a path to your snare, so it will step into your snare! Step 5: Baiting your FootHold Snare Picture of Baiting your FootHold Snare Place your bait two to three feet ahead of your foothold snare. Raccoon and mink like fish. Opossum like processed meat like hot dogs. Groundhogs like sweet apples. Coyote and fox like meat. Deer like deer feed (duh!). How it works: The animal will smell the bait and take your path of the least resistance. While walking up to your bait on the path, he will step his foot in the hole. It will pull his foot out of the hole and continue walking. (When we pulls his foot out the snare comes out with him.) Then the snare tightens around his foot, making him trapped. A better version of Etsy without the resellers

Etsy has made it pretty clear that they don't plan on closing down the high volume resellers that list cheap imports as "handmade."  Helen Killer (April Winchell) of Regretsy wrote an excellent explanation of why this amounts to bait and switch on Etsy's account. Most people go to the site thinking the majority of what they'll find is handmade.  Real makers, crafters, and artists post their items at a reasonable price considering how long it took to make the items.  Customers go to the site to find a specific item, search for it, and find a bunch of cheaper options listed with the handmade ones.  The cheaper items are often listed as handmade, and customers don't often do the extensive research to find out 1. how long a handmade version would actually take 2. the cheaper options were made in a factory overseas.  Considering that handmade was Etsy's big selling point, they have no reason to believe they're being duped by a reseller. Etsy also prohibits "calling out" in their forums, and often ignore the private reports of resellers.  Even if you have proof that the exact "handmade, unique" items in a seller's shop can be purchased for next to nothing elsewhere online (and in huge quantities), you're not allowed to mention it in Etsy's forums in order to warn others about what they're really buying. So far, is very small and new, but I like the clean interface and their promise to never allow reselling except in the case of crafting supplies.  I might be a naive idealist, but for now I believe that this site will actually keep their promise.

Hunting with Nerf Guns

The other night I was in full camo out in my street. I had stale bread torn up on the road as bait. Laying in the bushes, I waited for a target. For minutes I lay there, motionless, waiting for the perfect prey. Finally, a curious crow flew down, and started to peck at the bread. Using my steampunk-esque NiteFinder, capable of shots up to 50ft, I took aim. In a split second, just as the crow saw me, I pulled the trigger. My aim was true, and if I was using a real weapon, I would have killed it. A clean headshot, a bragging right, and awesomness was gained that moment. He flew away in relatively good condition, but I still had the satisfaction of that headshot. Now, tell me if you have hunted anything with a Nerf gun, and post an Instructable on how to make hunting darts.

So Bizarre, You Had to Know About This

My Dad sent me this. I suppose it's Halloween appropriate? Weird. Have you ever heard of "Bat Fishing?" Kids out in the countryside come up with creative things to occupy their time. This fellow called in to a radio show ... you have a very light monofilament line on your fishing pole. Tie on a very small hook like you would use for small trout, put a small weight just above the hook, and bait the hook with a little bread. You then toss the hook up over a wire or tree branch in an area where bats are flying around at dusk. Kind of tug or wiggle the line so the bats strike at it. Be patient ... eventually one of them will grab the hook. Then you can fly your bat around in the sky ... kind of like a kite. When the bat becomes exhausted, reel it in, remove the hook, and let it go.

Wardrivers :/

Last night while collecting the mail, I noticed a glow coming from inside a car. The guy was sitting in the drivers seat with a laptop, and had a small antenna stuck on the roof of the car. He was running Ubuntu and was trying to connect into my wireless network. (WPA2 thankfully). I could even make out my SSID. I thought of knocking on the window, but I had a better idea. Went back inside and disconnected the modem from the router (just in case), and booted up a LiveCD of Puppy Linux. I created a ad-hoc wireless network as bait and waited. 5 minutes later someone was connected. The user connected was Darren-Lap. I got his IP address and managed to SSH into his laptop without any password prompts. Quick Google to see if I could send him any messages through the Terminal. Found a method and sent him a message saying if he didn't leave in 5 minutes there would be consequences. His reply: "F**K YOU! Suddenly the firewall was getting a lot of hits.  A simple "sudo rm -rf /" command sorted him out. ( - demonstration) So here's a tip: Try to hack into my network, and be prepared to lose. :)

Feeding baby praying mantis (newly hatched)

FYI to anyone who has or wants to know what you can feed praying mantis babies right after they hatch. The egg sack i have been "protecting" (i thought) til spring has just hatched a day ago and its only december, my plan was to let them go after they hatched in the spring, but since i didnt keep the sack cold, it hatched now. After i freaked out for abit seeing i have about 50 or more TINY mantis all over the container i put the sack in, i called and called ALL over but no one would take them, and i cant let them just die. Everything i read about them says they only eat LIVE bugs..and they have to be small...really really pinhead crickets or fruit flies...well...YUCK..i dont want that in the house...but if thats what they need then so be it..UNTIL...i called a bait store and the guy (i wanted to KISS him for this info) told me to put RAW MEAT on a string so it sticks in small peices and hang it in the container..IT WORKS!! they went right for it!! SOOOO.........if you dont want or cant get tiny live food for them...FEED THEM RAW HAMBURER MEAT on a string!! this picture is the mom, isnt she beautiful! haha..i mean it!

ability of zombie in left for dead part 2

Smoker Appearance: An average-sized Infected with huge tumors all over its arms and face. Has a very long tongue as well. This tongue can be shed when the Smoker is injured, allowing them to get away. Sounds: Talk about an anti-smoking agenda. The Smoker makes all sorts of horrible wheezing and coughing sounds when idle. Launching the tongue creates a sort of slurping sound, and the music becomes dramatic whenever a survivor is being strangled to death. When they die, they explode with a puffing noise. Strengths: The Smoker is the longest-distance Infected and can easily separate groups of survivors through good use of its tongue. When a survivor is being strangled, they can't do anything to free themselves (much like the Hunter's pounce). This forces a teammate to run to the person and free them, potentially causing more problems for the survivors. They have a tendency to find the nooks and crannies where it is hard to see them, climb up on building, or move around in groups of regular infected in order to surprise the survivors. Weaknesses: In-between the Boomer and Hunter is where the Smoker's durability sits. They can only take a few shots before dying, making it essential for them to catch survivors off guard. When they grab a survivor, the survivor has a few seconds to fire at the Smoker before they become constricted. If they deal enough damage, the Smoker will let go and possibly even die. When constricting a survivor, any other survivor can bash or shoot the tongue or smoker to cause it to release the person they are strangling. Bashing the player counts as bashing the tongue, but shooting them does not. Special: Smokers are relatively harmless by themselves due to their weak damage output. However, much like the Boomer, they can turn an entire game around. If a smoker grabs and manages to strangle a player, it can force the other teammates to chase the player down and save them. On top of this, they often linger in large groups of common Infected, which will attack the strangled survivor and act as a shield for the Smoker. Tank Appearance: Muscle, muscles, and more muscles! The Tank wouldn't look out of place in Gears of War. They are gigantic, drag their knuckles along the ground, and run like apes. If you manage to miss seeing a Tank, you've got to be blind. A hilarious detail: Tanks have no lower jaws, so their tongues just dangle! Sounds: The Tank snorts, bellows, and generally sounds like an angry rhinoceros. The ground nearby trembles as they move, and the music gets very intense and action-oriented when one starts attacking the players. Crashing sounds are common as well, as they throw cars and chunks of landscape as well as rip apart doors. Strengths: Where to begin? The Tank is the single toughest Infected in the game. They can absorb an unholy amount of damage, forcing the entire team to work together to kill one. They can rip off chunks of the environment to hurl at the players, and will also throw cars. They can tear through certain parts of the environment, like pillars and barricades. Not even safehouse doors can stand up to a Tank. A player that is hit by a Tank will be flung, heavily damaged, and will be stunned on landing, unable to move. Weaknesses: A Tank can only take on a single survivor at a time, where all survivors can unload on them. They can't bash through obstacles, so walls and certain environmental objects will hinder them. They have to climb up like any normal Infected, as they can't leap. Any long-range attack can be easily dodged. They have a huge profile, which makes it almost impossible to miss them. Special: Tanks are big, dumb brutes, so use this to your advantage. They take time to find a target, and will get slowed down by environmental obstacles. With one person acting as bait, a Tank can be taken out extremely quickly as long as anybody, bait included, has a semi-automatic shotgun. Tanks are also highly flammable, and will burn until they die. Witch Appearance: Almost-naked, panting, gaunt, disturbing-looking woman with huge claws. Always has a red light on them, no matter where they may be in a level. Witches are the exact opposite of Tanks in appearance, being thin, small, and low-profile. Sounds: There is no creepier ambience in Left 4 Dead than that which surrounds a Witch. The Witch cries and sobs as long as it has been undisturbed, and the music becomes very creepy and disturbing as one gets closer and closer to a Witch. When they have been startled, it screams and chases down the offending survivor, letting loose random cries. Strengths: The Witch is the second-toughest Infected, next to the Tank. They also deal the most damage out of any Infected, as they are able to incapacitate (Easy through Advanced) or kill (Expert) any survivor with a single strike. They have great hearing, and any gunshots or explosions nearby will startle them, causing them to chase down the survivor that startled them. Weaknesses: The Witch will only chase down a single survivor before running away. The survivor which is closest and dealing the most damage is a target, but the one that startled the Witch will usually be the one that ends up taking the hit if it gets close enough. They're fast, but are slowed down a lot by doors and other obstacles. They can be sneaked by if the survivors turn off flashlights and walk instead of run. Special: The Witch is the only special Infected that can't be controlled by a player, for obvious reasons. A survivor with a semi-automatic shotgun can sneak up on a Witch (right next to one, in fact), point their gun at her, and unload a full clip into her before she can fully respond. This is the easiest way to take out Witches that are blocking essential paths, such as ones that are in subway cars in the second level of No Mercy.

Update on International Entries in Instructables Contests

We have greatly expanded the list of eligible countries that can participate in our contests!! To find all the eligible countries see below (Eligibility as of 11/16/2015). A small percentage of our contests will be limited to 14 countries (Limited Contests) so make sure to check the rules before entering. Contests rules will not retroactively be changed. Eligibility as of 11/16/2015 THE CONTEST IS OPEN ONLY TO NATURAL PERSONS WHO, AT THE TIME OF ENTRY, ARE REGISTERED MEMBERS OF THE SITE, WHO ARE AT LEAST THIRTEEN (13) YEARS OLD (FIFTEEN [15] YEARS OLD FOR RESIDENTS OF NORWAY AND EIGHTEEN [18] YEARS OLD FOR RESIDENTS OF GERMANY), AND NOT RESIDENTS OF ANY COUNTRY SUBJECT TO A US TRADE EMBARGO (AS OF APRIL 2014 NORTH KOREA, SYRIA, SUDAN, CUBA AND IRAN) AS WELL AS: BRAZIL, ITALY, ARGENTINA, TURKEY, ROMANIA, POLAND, OR THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC, CANADA. Limited Contests: Eligible countries include: US, UK, Australia, Belgium, Canada (excluding Quebec), China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland. ___________________________________________________ UPDATE 7/25/2012: Colombia, Denmark, Germany, India, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland are now eligible for all contests!  We've updated the rules to make this clear.  More countries coming as fast as we can. --Christy Broadly, there are two types of contests: games of skill and games of chance. Most of our contests are games of skill because they are judged, but we have occasionally run games of chance (random winner in a contest, random commenter wins a prize, etc..). Both types are regulated, sometimes stringently, across the world. As an independent entity, we may have been violating the contest and gaming laws in every country on the planet except the US. While ignorance of the law isn't an acceptable reason to violate it, I did not spend the time to understand and comply with every country's contest laws. Without locations across the world, the potential for enforcement of laws I didn't know about was low. We are now part of an international company, and the potential for enforcement is real. Complying with laws is not a drag! It's what sustainable businesses that expect to be around for a long time do! If you are upset about this, before you complain here, please write or call your representative, member of parliament, or dictator and ask them to simplify contest law in your country. The easier to understand your country's contest laws, the faster we can open our contests to you, and comply with your country's laws. Remember, obeying the law is what good websites do! Autodesk is not trying to destroy the Instructables community by reducing the number of entrants to our contests; in fact, they're very concerned about the issue. We are trying to make sure we obey all the laws of all the countries where we operate. We are simultaneously working to understand the laws of more countries so we can legally run contests in more areas. The terms and conditions of our contests are now in full compliance with the requirements of the US and Canada, except Quebec. Doing so required many hours of me talking to lawyers, and very large costs. I have sorted the countries we will work on next by where our traffic comes from, and where past winners and entrants have come from. For reference: Top 10 Countries by traffic: US - open UK - open Canada - open (minus Quebec) Australia - open India - open Germany - open Philippines Brazil Mexico France Top 10 Countries by winners and entrants: US - open Canada - open UK - open Australia - open Netherlands - open Germany - open New Zealand - open Argentina Colombia - open India - open The rules for games of skill and games of chance are drastically different. I foresee a situation where there are countries in which we can run one type of contest, but not the other. Since we don't collect your country of residence during registration, our method of determining who is eligible is based on where a winner wants us to ship a prize. Obeying laws is not a drag, but this is a tricky situation. I'll concede that you might view this as a bait and switch: we should have fully understood the contest laws of any country where we wanted to encourage DIY through our contests before allowing entrants from those countries. Instead, we allowed everyone, and now have to pause until I can talk to more lawyers. For that I apologize. Fixing this is one of our top priorities.  Even yesterday, I discussed how to get the UK and Australia added to the approved list, and we'll work from there.
