Games for Change

Everyone loves video games. And most everyone loves social change. So, video games for social change.... a sure winner! If you're in New York City next week, be sure to check out the Games for Change Conference. It's hosted by Parsons School of Design, the greatest school on the planet (I might be biased).

Change is good

Please do not change Instructables to much. Adding classes is very good but don't turn it into a school. I have been to school. I like Instructables the way it is. In formative helpful and exciting. I don't know how others feel but this is how I feel. Thank you .

Change Counts

A word to the wise: keep your pocket change! I have a normal sized red plastic cup that I put all my spare change in. It was pretty full...but not to the brim, so I decided to count it tonight. Over $50 in quarters - 65 all together! What a pleasant surprise for me. I'll have to get some paper rolls from the bank so I can cash it in!

Homepage changes

I am getting annoyed by all these new "fixes" to the layout on this site. I really wish it would go back to the 2 column layout with featured on one side and popular on the other. Look so much cleaner and nicer.

Change in the Couch =)

So recently, a friend and I decided to set up a website with a forum and a community - we want to create something pretty special here. We decided to call it Change in the Couch, because, who doesn't love it when we lift up the couch cushion to look for the freaking TV remote, and we find like, seven dollars in change? I know I do. If you don't, then you're a fool - or just really tidy.Seriously though, we could use some members and fun times, so feel free to sign up and discuss :) Maybe you'll meet some cool folks.http://forums.changeinthecouch.com

Homepage change

I've just released some changes to the layout of the site.  The home page is different; we're trying how things go if we sort by the top-level categories, if that helps people find things they're interested in more easily. We have also added the ability to allow authors to 'feature' comment threads on their Instructables. You'll see a checkbox by the bottom of each top-level comment marked "Feature Comment".  Checking it will pull that comment and all its replies to the top of the comments, and keep them there (it will also close that thread to further replies so as not to be hijackable). We expect this to be used for threads that really add a lot to the Instructable, but which are in danger of becoming hidden on later comment pages as additional comments are made.  Use sparingly!  Also note that the rearrangement does require a page refresh; the thread won't pop to the top immediately. There are a couple other small layout changes as well, nothing too big.  Also we've done a little work on contest management, which will help the admins do their work more easily but doesn't show for everyone else.

data changes

I'm using Windows XP on a desktop computer Firefox I've been editing some instructibles The last one I edited was : Easy (no power tools) workspace with storage for large paper I've been following the total number of views of my ibles for some days in 'view profile'. After the last edit, I've lost about five thousand views.  The ibles all show the same number of views.  What happened?

Editor Changes

As you may have noticed, for several months now we've been testing out a change to the Instructable editing process, what we've called the new editor. It's faster and better designed than the old one, and saves your work automatically as you go along. Well, we decided it was ready for prime time, and we've gone ahead and made it the default editor for everyone. The old one is still around if you want it - just click the "Switch back to the old editor" link on the top right of the edit section. But we think you'll want to stick with the new one (all of us here at Instructables HQ have been using the new one exclusively for quite some time). Try it out if you haven't yet, and tell us what you think in the comments!

Backend changes

I've just released a new minor version of Instructables.  There are no significant front-end changes but we have done some things under the hood to allow for upcoming features.  There are a few minor bugfixes, and for Pro members, you now have a note with your renewal date listed and if applicable, a link to renew your membership. Going forward, I will write a forum in this area for each release, even if all I have to say is, "stuff under the hood".  For bugfix releases, I'll edit the topic for the appropriate release.  If you find a bug, I'd appreciate it very much if you would take a minute to file it in the bugs section. Update: Whoops, broke some RSS feeds with that last release.  Should be OK now.  Let us know in the bugs section if you are seeing any RSS problems still.

Editor change

I've just released a new version of Instructables, with a new updated version of the rich text editor. Also, we set the default for comments to not use rich text, because most comments don't need it; but you can click the 'rich text' button if you want to use formatting in a comment. The new editor looks a little different but works basically the same. As always, Pro users do have a greater range of formatting options.  It has a couple nicer features than the previous one (e.g. you can paste directly into it) and runs a bit faster.  We hope you will find it an improvement too; please let us know of any problems you may encounter with it!

Gaming is Changing

I used to like console gaming because systems rarely/never costed more than $300, it was simple, and everybody had the same stuff. There were no expensive HDTVs, broadband-requiring/expensive online play, the fanciest peripheral was the rumble pack, and your console didn't do anything except light up a power light if there was no game in it.I'm not rich, my parents have never owned a house, and with all the fancy crap that consoles require and do today, I can't afford even a Wii (not that I'd want one, the novelty has worn off). I'm not saying all these improvements in gaming are bad, but for someone like me, I just don't have the money for a shiny new 360, or even high-speed internet (I live on an acerage and there's no cable in the country) for online muiltiplayer/communication.For now, I'll just have to fondly remember having home tournaments playing Star Wars Episode 1 Pod-Racer on N64 with my friends. What do YOU think about gaming today?

I am changing guitar strings myself for the first time how should I do this one at a time or all at once?

I am doing this for the first time I just don't want the neck to loose tension. Is it ok to do this all at once I am wondering this and don't want to pay the 40 for the adjustment that I would have to do? Is there a place where I can take a course on tech stuff?

Secret Message Revealed After Wet

Does anybody know of a way to have a paper with a secret message on it (pretend the message says, "It Rained"), and once the paper has been soaked with liquid (water, or maybe a mild acid or base), the secret message is revealed permanently? So like, if you had a little paper sign out in your yard with the secret message, and it rained, and the paper got wet, when you come home, you would see the dried out paper but with the message revealed. (note, i don't actually care about a "it rained" indicator, just an example)

Building a capacitor charging unit

I was looking for a HowTo on building a capacitor charging unit. I saw a thread on a forum a while back that said you could create a large EM Pulse by sending a huge current down a coil of wire. I was looking about wiring up a bunch of these 220uF caps from Maplinhttp://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ITAG=SPEC&ModuleNo;=12777&doy;=28m9#specThey are the last ones on the list.Would a few of these be sufficient to produce a large EM field, one that could fry sensitive electronic equipment. And how would i go about charging them all to the full capacity. Also while on this topic, would this be an efficient way of generating an EM pulse, or could you suggest any other ways of doing so.

Can you change a Photo Instructable to a Step By Step Instructable without creating a whole new Instructable? Answered

...and thereby loosing the associated data of an existing Photo Instructable? I created a photo style instructable which should probably have been a step by step, and though I understand that I can copy and paste, etc... I am still creating an entirely new instructable... and thereby loosing comments, votes, views, etc... as well as all the notations I placed on the images. Thanks for any help!
