usb enclosure hack

Current inventory: 2 Seagate ST340015A IDE hds (40 gb each) 1 Rosewill External usb 2 ide enclosure (pl2506 controller chipset) 1 40 conductor ide cable (mobo-slave-master) soldering iron/solder way, wayyy to much free time. OK, given the above items, is it possible to run both drives at the same time from the one enclosure? Fitting inside the enclosure is not an issue. So far, I have removed the original ide cable the came with the enclosure controller. And, installed my own ide cable. The only drive that is detected is the one jumpered as master, at either location on the cable(master vs slave). No matter what the other drive is jumpered as(slave, cable select), it is not detected. I tried setting both as master and neither are recognized. I have run out of ideas... suggestions would be great. And please dont suggest getting another enclosure. IM CHEAP!

Lightweight Speaker Enclosure

Im coming up to the third (hopefully waterproof) upgrade of my longboard mounted speakers. Im looking for something pre-made like a square pipe or storage box etc, that i can use as an enclosure that has flat ends large enough to mount 6.5" PA speakers onto, is no wider than 8" and no longer than 2ft. It needs to be as lightweight but rigid as possible. Any ideas/links?

Custom Electronics Project Enclosures

I need to have a custom enclosure made for my senior design project. It has to be placed on the back of a hand and thus have some curve to it to hug around the hand. Also, it can not be much bigger than about the size of a deck of cards. Most places I've found only have rectangular enclosures. Does anybody know of a place that could fabricate the custom design I described? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Connecting the ground to my enclosure?

I'm building gmoon's Valvelitzer inside a utility box. I've just realized that the entire enclosure is going to be grounded, meaning it's going to be directly connected to the negative pole of the power supply, which seems to run at 14V 2.2A (It'll be regulated at 12v before it gets to the tube). Is this dangerous? If it isn't, should I just solder all the ground points to the enclosure? If I run the power along the enclosure, is that going to cause some extra capacitance? Is that bad?

I'm in the process of trying to design a prototype for a custom electronics project. I have a 3d printer at my disposal and I would like to print out my initial prototype and at a later time get the enclosures injection molded. I'm looking for some advice on a starting point. Is there some sort of standard model I can start with? or do people typically always design these from scratch. Does any one have recommendations on a place that could do a short run of injection molded enclosures? any advice or starting points would be helpful

What would make good cat enclosure toys?

I have a cat enclosure attached to my house for my cats but it's just a bit of grass and a fence. How can I make it more interesting for them without spending hundreds of dollars on accessories from the company that built the enclosure? I don't really know where to start other than maybe hanging something from the top as a toy they can bat around but I'm worried that they'll either break the toy, break the netting or hurt themselves. I've considered a scratching post but I don't know how to make a waterproof one and carpet's kinda out :/

Since subscribing to Instructables I have found this to be one of the best and most interesting investments I have ever made.  I do offer a challenge to those interested in computer hardware.  I removed a Seagate 4.5 inch SATA hard drive from my old computer.  I would now like to recover some files from this hard drive.  However, I cannot find anywhere I can purchase a suitable hard drive enclosure which can be connected to and accessed by a computer through a USB port.  Seagate cannot help.  Is any subscriber to Instructables able to design and construct such an enclosure?  There must be a large number of people who have a similar problem.  Would anyone like to meet the challenge?

Is it ok to put 2 subwoofers (wired in series) in a single sealed enclosure or should they be seperated? My worry is that the single sealed enclosure may cause too much pressure rather than adding more pop to the sound.

Thoughts for a fan for venting a homemade 3D printer enclosure?

Hello all, I'm in the early stages of building my own enclosure for my 3D printer. I'm going the route of building it using Ikea Lack tables. I'd very much like to put in a fan to vent the fumes from printing out the window via a hose. Originally, I was going to use a USB fan, but I'm starting to wonder if that will move enough air to make any difference. I was going to go with USB because I have no electrical work skills. I'm curious if any of you have thoughts, or have already come up with solutions for this. I'd be interested to hear any suggestions or advice anyone has. Thanks!

Too big enclosure for sub woofer?

Last year had a lot of bad luck making my bike sound system. I made some boxes, fried some electronics, etc. The boxes were too big for easy handling, so I'll make another attempt, since spring is coming. I noticed the speaker (driver) did not like higher volumes; very large excursions in the lower Hz range , probably hitting the end of its moving range. It is a closed enclosure, no port. The RMS output of the amp is probably many times lower than the RMS rating of the speaker (driver); logitech 2.1 computer amp with consumer grade sub speaker (6"). Same problem occurs with my home 10" 60 W RMS driver in a closed ca. 70 l - ca.15 Gallon barrel, with a modest 25W RMS amp: I cannot even turn it halfway up:  it is mounted horizontally, and shoots peas 40 cm (16") up! Would it be more helpful to make the box / barrel less square? Like halve the size by putting a diagonal separator in the box? Or is geometry irrelevant and does only volume matter? Perhaps there even might be a formula????

Is a Wooden Enclosure for Electronics a Good Idea? Answered

I am in the process of converting my ATX power supply into a bench power supply. My PSU's standard case is made from 1mm steel with various ventilation holes, there is also a 120*120mm fan.  However, the circuit board is strangely positioned within the case and there isn't enough space for what I want to add.   I would like to take all of the electronics and rehouse them in a home-made wooden case. My question is; Is this a sensible thing to do? I plan to use 5mm pine stripwood to remake the box, but slightly bigger and better arranged. I would still fit the fan and drill plenty of ventilation holes.  Do I need to take any extra precautions if using wood, or is it just a really bad idea. Thanks in advance.

potentiometers: How thick is the enclosure allowed to be, how can I fix them inside the enclosure? Answered

So in a nutshell: I'm following an instructable where potentiometers are used which i was never working with before. Those potentiometers are covered with some potentiometer-knobs which are between the enclosure and the potentiometers. And now I have some questions ... a) how do I fix / secure the potentiometers inside the enclosure so they don't move when I turn them, but the potentiometer-knobs do, and b) how thick is the enclosure allowed to be when I use 500K, 5% tolerance potentiometers? This is so frustratingly confusing.

Hard drive enclosure to turn internal into external?

Hello all, I have what may be a dumb question - so hopefully it will be an easy one to answer! I have a couple old hard drives from old computers that I want to put into a case/enclosure to repurpose into an extra external hard drive. When I take exact measurements of the hard drives they are: 4" x 5 3/4' x 1 (W x L x D). I've been looking around for enclosure kits but I don't see any that are 4" in width. I see a lot of 3.5" and not many others besides smaller 2.5" casings. So my possibly stupid question is: Do I want the 3.5" enclosure for my hard drive? I know that sometimes the sizings can be off when it comes to stuff like this. Thanks for the help, RW

External Hard Drive enclosure for eSATAp connection

Hey, I want to buy a Power over eSATA kit (aka eSATAp) to use with 3.5inch internal hard drives (which are cheaper and faster than laptop 2,5inch drives). I'll be using it on desktop computers on and off, so the higher power consumption of desktop drives is not the issue. Thing is, I want to enclose the internal 3.5inch hard disk in something, for transport. Some case that leaves room for the cable connection (see GIF). Does anyone know if I can adapt existing SATA hard disk enclosures? Or if there is some boxy-thingy out there that I can best adapt to suit my purpose? I was looking for an instructable on this but couldn't find any. Thanks!

How can i make an outdoor mosquito free enclose? Answered

I already have a mosquito net. It is made specifically for mosquitos, but here's the twist. The enclose that i want it around is somewhat deep in the woods, and it is a tarp fort. The fort is made out of a tarp that is in between two trees and it is slanted. It's pretty much just a right triangle.  Pretty much all that i am asking is how to seal up the gaps in between the netting and the tarp.

Best adhesive for securing plastic enclosure to silicone surface?

Vertical Vivarium

Hello,  About two months ago I finished building my first vivarium. It's a monster at 5'wX2'hX2'd. It has a false-bottom, live plants, anoles, homemade irrigation system, appears cordless, made of 1/8th inch plexiglass and silicone sealed. Recently, it began to leak. The water pooled underneath the bottom panel and remained hidden until it seeped through the plywood it was resting on. I now have a series of buckets collecting constant drips underneath this thing. If I'm going to go through the trouble of emptying the tank and fixing the seal I might as well redesign it so this problem doesn't happen again.  I'd like to make more of a vertical vivarium since I am housing green anoles and they love having height. I'm thinking of recycling as much wood and plexiglass as possible; however, I'd like to avoid as much DIY sealing as possible. I'd like to have either sliding plexiglass doors, plexiglass doors on hinges, or a plexiglass panel held in place by magnets on the front. To fill the vertical space I'd like to have a living wall type plan. If anyone has any tips, guides, or advice for: the front doors, living walls, improving the bottom, or improving the false-bottom, it would be much appreciated.

Matching speakers to amplifier

I have purchased 2 Maxamp20 amplifiers (http://store.accusafe.nl/modules/versterkers/maxamp20-met-3-5mm-connector) and i am trying to match speakers to them, i've searched audio forums for information (that i mostly don't understand) and tried asking questions (that have been mostly ignored) and i think i've found appropriate speakers but i want to get a second opinion before i purchase stuff i might not be able to return. i don't have the space for and can't afford the weight requirements of a large enclosure but i want fairly high volume and wide dispersion so im looking at getting 2 of these PA horns (http://www.specotech.com/index.php/products/audio/item/542-spc40rp) to mount on top of a shallow down firing enclosure for 2 of these subs (http://store.accusafe.nl/onderdelen/luidsprekers/subwoofer/dayton-audio-sd215a-88-8-dvc-subwoofer-speaker). i know the subs work with that amplifier because they are used in Boominators (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/class-d/104402-boominator-another-stab-ultimate-party-machine.html) but i have no idea about the horns. also assuming this setup is okay do i need some kind of filter or crossover (not sure of the difference) to split the sound safely between the midrange and the sub speakers?

Sorry folks looks like the server screwed up my posting and i'll have to post my idea for home brewed 5.25in floppies all over again (the post eventually appeared several hours later so i deleted it) ok so where to start (*light bulb appears over head*) i got it if you have a 5.25in floppy get it out and look at it you'll notice that its pretty simple the first part you will notice is the plastic envelope enclosure thing which is just a single piece of folded plastic with some holes cut in it, just below the surface of the enclosure is a fabric or paper dust trap that keeps the disk debris free and finally comes the hard part the disk each disk has 3 components the iron oxide powder, the disk, and the binding glue stuff the holds the powder to the disk. now here is my crude theoretical unproven construction process 1. cut out the enclosure(i'm thinking a material like plastic card stock might work) (probable impossible by hand put it under a laser cutter or watter jet if you have one) 2.use 8 dabs of glue to glue the dust trap in place on the side of the enclosure that will come in contact with the disk 3.spray some adhesive onto the disk and bury it in iron oxide powder 4.remove the excess powder and spray it again with adhesive 5.carefully put the disk in the enclosure and fold the enclosure around it gluing the enclosure shut 6.stick it in your floppy drive and format it i'll have time to try this myself this summer until then feel free the criticize and question my sanity just PLEASE don't suggest buying disks from e-bay, thrift stores, flee markets, online, or any where else for that matter
