3D Printshow | London-Paris-New York

Hey guys, I'm based in London, and I'm also a real newb when it comes to 3D printing tech despite having been fascinated by it for a few years. I'm particularly art-interested, so for me 3D Printing is exciting because of the creative/social potential.  I'm not blessed with the ability to understand the engineering/programming side of the industry, but I'm really into conferences and events where we can talk about the implications. I was wondering if any of you have been to /seen/heard of 3D Printshow - its recently gone global which bodes well for a good event, but I've not seen/heard that much hype and wondered if anyone here knew much. http://3dprintshow.com/ :-) Most-D

Jameco Build Night at Taipei Hackerspace

Greetings from Taipei Hackerspace, I'm Greg, one of the co-founders, and the organizer for the August Build Night (well, afternoon) in out space. First of all, thanks for Instructables and Jameco for this, this was our firstit was a really fun opportunity, and surely learned a lot from it. :) We had a relatively small turnout, partly because our Hackerspace is dual-language (Chinese and English) and I can only speak/write one of them, and also because next time we'll need some more preparation and engagement of the community. Still, we had very interesting folks, from ex-NASA engineer, through business guy and biomedical major, to journalist. Everyone seemed to have learned some new things and had a great time. We haven't built anything really fancy, but had good time figuring out the basics, and the 555 timer is simple enough to get started with, and in the same time complex enough to puzzle us with strange circuit bugs :P Our instructables from the event: -> Annoying screaming light -> Ticking bomb package (any bonus points for reusing the package we got the build night components in?:) -> Thankful donation jar As some feedback, the grab-bag of electronics was in general interesting, there were some parts that the more knowledgeable members told me to "hide it away because it's highly sought after". Had a big load of LEDs too (more than we would have ever used for the build night) and the big variety of resistor was a good idea. I was missing one thing: since the build night is centered around the 555 timer, maybe a larger number and variety of capacitors would have been useful (there were about 5 pieces in the entire package, while had at least 60 LEDs), since pretty much every 555 circuit uses a bunch of different caps. More photos from our event are at https://plus.google.com/photos/100085911445404984901/albums/5913287340991955185 (no login required). Cheers!

Mc MADSAT

Make And Do Show And Tell.greensteam brought the Offline Mechanical Steampunkers' Blog which got a lot of use and went through all it's paper.I brought the Toaster which attracted quite a bit of interest, the Clock and a couple of other things. I also brought bread and butter for the toaster, but there was some concern about setting off the smoke-alarms so I ate that on the 6 hour trip home...For the making:A group of crocheters, which I didn't get around to trying.Making rubbery-goop from PVA seemed popular with the kidsKeyrings and such were being made from low temperature thermoplastic.Various items were being made from old keyboards, including wallets and bracelets, and there was keyboard-dismantling to go with it.The soldering group were building light-modulated audio devices (and fitting them to mint-tins) - this seemed to be a popular choice with people waiting at times.A rather nice looking 3D model maker was brought, but due to a technical problem it wasn't able to dispense hot plastic on the day (shame). There was some good steampunk stuff on display, some of it being of high quality and for sale.A group of cake-makers brought some fantastic looking cakes / pieces of sugar-art.Also some cardboard sculptures, things made from old umbrellas, crochet items, various other bits & pieces.(And one exhibitor didn't turn up)MAKE contributed some magazines, so I picked one of them up.Thanks to greensteam for inviting me, here are some of the better photos that I took and a video compilation. The video is ~5 min, so I've saved at 340Kbps to keep it a reasonable size but it's still 11.9MB. There was a lot of background noise & chatter on all the footage, and with the exception of the light-modulated audio device nothing much of interest to listen to. That's why I dubbed a music track on it.L

Instructables Event. Windsor, Ontario Canada / Detroit, Michigan USA

Hey, is there anyone on here from the Windsor / Detroit area?......... I'm in windsor and it'd be cool to have an Instructables event around this area. I might be wiling to host it in Windsor or maybe someone from Michigan might be willing to host one in detroit........ or even Ohio somewhere. I'd set it up with the instructables people if you wanted me to host it........... but only if there are enough people in the area or traveling distance that are interested

Instructables Event in North Carolina!

So it's going to happen, Eric just gave me the OK. There's going to be an Instructables event in North Carolina! I will be hosting an Instructables event of some sort this fall or winter, most likely fall, here in Boone, North Carolina. There are no details yet, since I need you all to tell me when would work best for most of you. I'm not sure what, when, or where yet. We'll pick a weekend, preferably one when there's not a football game going on here, and we'll do something like a show and tell. I know there are quite a few Instructables users in the state, plus quite a few within driving distance. Anyone interested can post here or PM me. Let me know what you all think, and we'll set a date. I'm working on a location as we speak. If many people show interest in driving from very far away and will possibly need lodging, then I can post details about what we have in Boone as far as hotels, camp grounds, etc.Cheers! More updates to come.-DMCUpdate 9-4Two dates that are looking promising are October 18th and November 8th. We officially have permission to use the Bald Guy Brew in the evening. If we do something in the evening Bald Guy Brew going to be the best bet. As for a time, we'd probably start somewhere between 4 and 6. More specifics on that to come. Update 9-8Okay, the date that's looking promising is the 8th of November. This is a show-and-tell event. We will be meeting at Bald Guy Brew coffee shop, so bring a few bucks of you want coffee. I'll post directions closer to the event. Go ahead and invite your friends. Bring a snack if you can, and let me know if you plan on coming!Update 9-8 (2)And let me know if you'll need a projector, to be outside to demo, need a haz-mat team present, or whatever. If you let me know before you show up for the event then I can probably make it happen. Maybe not a haz-mat team, but you get the idea.Update 10-21Final/semi-final details are up!

Mini Maker Faire during Cambridge Science Festival

On May 7th there's going to be a Mini Maker Faire as part of the Cambridge Science Festival. I participated last year and it was a lot of fun, and I'll be there again along with some other folks from the Boston area. The science festival goes on from April 30-May 8 so there are a lot of other cool things to check out there too. If you are going I'd love to chat with you at my Soft Circuit Saturdays booth : ) It'd be nice to meet some more local makers around here.

Who's in Las Vegas?

Eric and I will be running an Instructables play area at Autodesk University in Las Vegas this year. If you live nearby, or will be in Vegas between November 28-December 1 2011 (the week after Thanksgiving), comment here or send me a PM!  We'd like to invite you to stop by, show off what you're working on, and play with some of our toys.  Why will this be awesome?  The folks from Epilog will be laser-engraving your gear, we'll be making LED Throwies and marshmallow guns (with a shooting gallery!), Lion Brand is sending yarn, and we'll be assembling 3D cardboard models like this.  There may also be a giant inflatable Instructables robot. So! Do you live in or near Vegas?  Are you visiting, or attending AU?  Let me know, and stop by our booth at The Venetian. It's free to visit our space, as it's outside the conference proper. SUPER-SEEKRIT BONUS: if you stop by and identify yourself as an Instructables member, you'll get one of our awesome new limited-edition Robot lapel pins.

Bamboo 'stanchions' base...?

I'm working on a set of stanchions for a 'Green' event, as we are expecting quite a few people lining up out front of our booth. I'm thinking about bamboo canes for the poles, with holes drilled near the top to allow 1" manila rope (or similar) through, but I'm not sure how to make them stand up, what to use for a base. Ideally it should be enviro-friendly, cheap, light and durable. That's not too much to ask, is it.....?

Nerd Alert!

I am heavily involved in letterboxing. I've seen letterboxing posts here on instructables, but just in case it's not a familiar topic, it's a hobby similar to geocaching. Especially when we have events and get-togethers we will often engage in self-deprecating humor about our nerd status. For upcoming events I would like to create either of the following props, and would appreciate any ideas on how to approach them: (1) Nerd Detector--some sort of box that would have some sort of motion or proximity sensor that would trigger an alarm, siren, etc., when approached. (2) Nerd Tester--something akin to the "love tester" from old, old-school arcades. Someone would grip a handle, and some sort of meter or display would indicate the participant's (supposed) level of geekery. Thanks for any ideas!!!

Explore the Age of Industry: Mechanicrawl 2008

The Long Now Foundation is sponsoring an event called the Mechanicrawl which takes place this weekend. In case you were wondering, the Mechanicrawl is a walking tour which explores some of the different mechanical marvels along San Francisco's North Shore (including my personal favorite, The Musee Mecanique.I know most San Francisco natives avoid the North Shore like a tourist-filled plague, but this is a great chance to see all of those things that you might not otherwise ever bother (or get) to see. And should you happen to be amongst the plague of tourists that swarm to the city this time of year, this would be a great opportunity to take a very unique (and free) walking tour.

Banned Books Week! 9/29 - 10/6!

Did you guys even know this existed? Are you doing anything for it?Quite nerdy of me, I know, but my store has a neat display going on right now and I wanted to share. And it's good to spread the word about events like these, I think! :DSo my friend Seth and I decided to go with Alcatraz... but with books. I think it turned out fairly well considering we tried to use materials we had lying around the store. The whole thing cost less than $20. We wanted to have "Where's Waldo?" escaping on the raft but the book is much too big, so I thought LotF was fitting. :)Oh, and for more information about banned and challenged books, visit these sites!deletecensorship.org - Half Price Books websiteALA website - lots of nice lists and explanations!

Time for another SF Make Out

I'm holding another "Make Out" making in public event this Thursday, April 21st at the Amsterdam Cafe in San Francisco. What is it: It's a casual meet up to work on projects, share ideas, brainstorm, meet people, or just drink beer and chat. (Amsterdam cafe has around 300 beers available.) (They also have really good coffee, tea, and wine if beer isn't your thing.)  Bring a project if you have one (and it's appropriate to have it in a public cafe.  So no flame throwers or full-sized space ships.) Or just bring yourself.  Last time we had a full range of bakers, craters, hackers, technologists, and the curious and it was a really great time. When: April 21 from 5pm to 8pm (though it may run longer.) Where: Amsterdam Cafe, 937 Geary street, San Francisco [map] [web site] I'll be the guy playing with LEDs and Arduinos. Cost: Free!  (Though Kelly, the lovely owner of Amsterdam cafe would appreciate it if you bought something to drink and tipped well.) Who: Everyone is welcome. More details are here.

San Francisco Public Making Meet Up #3

I'm holding another "Make Out" making in public event this Thursday, June 2nd at the Amsterdam Cafe in San Francisco. It's a casual meet up to work on projects, share ideas, brainstorm, meet people, or just drink beer and chat. (Amsterdam cafe has around 300 beers available.) (They also have really good coffee, tea, and wine if beer isn't your thing.) Bring a project or just bring yourself. In the past we've had everything from crafts to robots to baking.  Last time we looked forward to Maker Faire, so I expect we'll talk a lot about our Maker Faire expereinces. When: June 2 from 5pm to 8pm (though it may run longer.) Where: Amsterdam Cafe, 937 Geary street, San Francisco [map] [web site] I'll be the guy playing with LEDs and Arduinos. Cost: Free! (Though Kelly, the lovely owner of Amsterdam cafe would appreciate it if you bought something to drink and tipped well.) Who: Everyone is welcome. More details are here.

I Organized the Christmas Advent Calendar, What else can I do?!

So, the Christmas Advent Calendar was a lot of fun and for the most part a big success. There are a few things I would change to make it more efficient for next year though. I was wondering, to all of the instructables staff that read this, is there anything else I can do for instructables? I would really like to help out because instructables is my favorite DIY site and I want to see it get even better! Thanks for reading!

Creative Commons Salon: We Love to Share At Creative Commons, we love to share. And while CC is primarily known for its work enabling openness and collaboration in the digital world, we're interested in how the culture of sharing is changing offline life as well. Join us at the next CC Salon in San Francisco, where we'll present three projects focused on how sharing ideas, knowledge, and even physical space can revolutionize the way people create, work, and play. The evening's presenters are Jack Herrick, founder of the collaborative how-to manual wikiHow; Clément Alteresco, COO of innovation/strategic development agency faberNovel, which founded collaborative workspace pariSoma; and Neal Gorenflo, founder of Shareable, a new magazine and online community dedicated to sharing. Date & Time • Tuesday, July 6, 2010 • 7:00-9:00 PM • $5-10 suggested donation (no one turned away) • Beverages provided • Plenty of street parking available • pariSoma is located up two steep flights of stairs, and unfortunately does not have wheelchair access at this time pariSoma Innovation Loft

Quilt-in for charity

Want to make beautiful quilts for charity? Host a quilt-in event! Author auntwrenny tells us how the Crafting for Charity Club holds a quilt-in every year, getting a bunch of crafters together to make quilts for groups in need.  This past year, they made an incredible 15 quilts in 12 hours, then distributed the quilts to homeless people in the Des Moines area. See the Instructable for suggestions on publicizing, organizing, and running your own quilt-in!  Auntwrenny covers everything from soliciting donations, setting up different quilt-making stations, great jobs for kids, and the importance of keeping your volunteers well-fed! Inspired?  Want to run your own event?  Have other great ideas for charitable crafting? Be sure to leave a question or comment on the Quilt-In Instructable! This post has been sponsored by Pepsi. The Pepsi Refresh Project celebrates the people, businesses, and non-profits with ideas that will have a positive effect on our world.

Warrior Dash 2010

Http://warriordash.com/ If this is coming to an area near you and you want to participate ^here's the link Also, I am trying to have a costume made for this event if anyone's interested I have put a post with the title  Warrior Dash Costume in the forum

Warrior Dash Costume

Www.warriordash.com This event is coming to Florida and I am going to participate in it with a few of my friends. Before this competition takes place I would like to have a costume made for me to wear during the race. So my challenge to any DIY'ers who would like to engage is to make a costume I could wear to Warrior Dash. The creator who makes the best costume will be rewarded by me wearing it to this event. Usually the people in costumes are the ones the film crews capture video of at all the Warrior Dash Events so there's a strong possibility your costume could show up. I will pay shipping and handling if required. Tomorrow I will post up my measurements. I would need this costume made & shipped to me before the 22nd of January 2011. Costume requirements: Can be any design relative to Warrior Dash or vikings, knights, animals, any tribes/clans/kingdoms, video game characters, etc. Whole costume not required could be anything from just a mask, gloves, body armor, signs, leggings, gloves, accessories Creators are encouraged to collaborate in order to be more efficient and merge ideas together Best of Luck Thanks, to anyone's intrigue I may have peaked

Event programmable USB LED/light (for the deaf)

Would like to see... a USB LED, which can be programmed to light up ...based on some 'event' such as new email, or whatever software triggers can be programmed, to turn the light on/off.  Even better, if there was a means to use different colors... or blink rates.

Freezing Grand Central Station

A couple hundred people created an event in Grand Central Station in NYC simply by freezing in place. The event was coordinated by Improv Everywhere, a group that has managed to create some wonderfully amazing events with good coordination, a lot of volunteers, and not much else. Who needs a big budget to do something this fun and memorable? The plan: Get a couple hundred people to freeze in place in GCS for five minutes. People stopped mid-conversation, mid-stride, even mid-paper drop. The execution: Flawless. Improv Everywhere pageNote: my landlord participated in one of their events at a Home Depot. He loved it and if you're near NYC, check out one of their events in the future.
