Many of us out here have firewalls that block video. The result is a box with the 'X'. This looks kludgy. Is there anything you can do? Perhaps show a picture in place of the video?

Hi everyone, i looked at the instructable of the wokfi antenna and the site of where it all started on that topic ( http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ ).i found a free wifi access in my area, i got 1 pc (ethernet card+ usb wifi dongle), one laptop (wifi), a nintendo wii (wifi) and an old pc (233mhz, ethernet card) also a spare ethernet pci card and a pcmcia wifi not in the laptop, laying around .here's what i would like to do to have internet for free:- get the signal from the free wifi access point to the 233 mhz pc- use that pc as a firewall- then send the signal thru the ethernet cable and with another wifi (the pcmcia in the pc with a pcmcia to pci adapter or another usb wifi dongle, witch ever is cheaper) because my laptop can't reach the free wifi access point, it's to far..i'm looking for help on this please, i'll do an instructable with it because i think it could also be usefull to other. that whole idea of free wifi to anyone could be used here. because, let's say in a block, dorm, appartment a far away wifi connection could be shared localy. i've been digging for an intense 2 days now but my knowledge about networks and english (my first language is french) aren't that good so if anybody got an idea where to start looking it would be very appreciated.

I am starting an Ubuntu home server, and I'm wondering what the best firewall software is that's compatible with Ubuntu. For example, Gufw or Fire Starter. Some Pros and Cons would be nice too! Thanks! -Shadow Ops

I bought a magicJack for internet telephone service. It works great at home and since the device is small and portable, I thought I could bring it to school and have a telephone in my room while there, too. However, the device cannot access magicJack's servers so it doesn't work. MagicJack says it uses a given range of UDP ports. Apparently the district computer Nazis have blocked access and they aren't going to open them for me. Can I open them myself?

(It would be best if the PVR and "guide" programs were combined) Thanks -Shadow Ops P.S. While I'm asking Linux questions, what is a good strong firewall for Linux? I need one for a computer I'm using as a firewall to my router.

I am in highschool and was wondering if you could get around school firewalls by booting off of an external hardrive. I have a bootable back up of my computer and would there be any reason you could not boot off of an external hardrive at school and use all your programs provided you have the drivers for the computer installed.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.4, along with a couple of other people on the same network. I have a firewall set up on my computer While I am able to connect to most people remotely, using the command (in terminal) ssh [username]@[IP address] (I get the IP address by pinging the computer name) There are a couple of people where I come across the message of: "Port 22: Connection refused" (or something along those lines) Anyone know what's happening? Cos I'm clueless..... I've tried to see if removing the known hosts files changes anything, but it doesn't. I have no idea as to whether those people have firewalls set up or something Is there another port that could be used here or something (23 maybe..? I heard...?)

I expect if you know the solution I don't really need to explain, but anyway: When I use the Google search engine, on "Web" mode, 9/10 times I will be redirected when I click a link. The URL of the site reads "Results2Google" and I will end up in some random search engine, like Search Pro. It is beginning to get very annoying, but here's the thing: AVG Antivirus found nothing Avira Antivirus found noting Windows defender found nothing Google Chrome found nothing So what do I do? As you can probably see, I use google chrome. Thanks!

OK, so i downloaded Combat Arms to see what it was like, i downloaded it, installed it, made a user. then when i started it, it worked fine, i logged in, joined a server and a room, then it said the game was starting so i waited, it counted down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 then the game froze for around 5 seconds, I thought the game was starting so I waited. Then a message popped up: Failed to join battle. Connection timed out? I have tried re-installing the game twice, allowed CA through my firewall and anti virus (AVG 2011) and yet it still wouldn't let me join a game. I then disabled my firewall and AVG to see if it still happened, STILL DIDN'T WORK! by this point I was getting annoyed :S I exited CA and re-enabled both my firewall and AV software. any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. P.S. We recently got a new router so it's not our internet, i am also running windows 7 64bit, running CA in admin and compatibility for xp sp2 thanks in advance :D

Soooo, I guess I am buying a new HD. So far all attempts to boot the machine to Windows has left me with ChkDsk looping on an error it can not fix. If I could just get Ubuntu to boot to ROOT so I can transfer all my admin files, I wouldn't care so much abouit losing the HD. So far, I've spent a full 12 hours working on it......I even did a full "restore" from the repair disk.....nothing changed, but nothing failed during the restore....so something is not quite right. This also means I will be on line in a MUCH more limited fashion than before. Replaced the HD.....had a LOT of problems until I realized the machine still saw the old drive and kept trying to run CHKDSK on it. New HD 320gb installed an up.....tomorrow, we deal with installing the firewall, and maybe, if I have some time, a few other things (like a word processor, etc). What a day its been though ! I STILL can't get ON LINE at home....not from windows anyways.....still no firewall.....sigh...this is gettin ridiculous...

Comment box at top of comments works. So now I know what to do, but I don't comment that requently and no doubt will get caught again next time.

I have AVG, a firewall and windows defender all updated daily. Why does instructables allow this sort of intrusion? dougoutcanoe

I had to install Adobe Premier for a friend with no real clues. Anyway, all was good and registered but the first start was aborted with an error stating that a module for the graphics card could not be loaded. The misleading suggestion underneath, stating to updated the graphics driver was of little use as the latest Nvidia driver was already installed. A support request with Adobe gave the suggestion to fully uninstall all Adobe products, using their clean up tool. After that a reboot and fresh install of all. You guessed it, Premier CC would still refuse to start with the same error. Google was of no use this time but a system check revealed the fix: Premier was trying to load quite a few things but some have been blocked by the virus scanner for no good reason. After setting exceptions for the problematic files I also checked the firewall and gave full access to all Adobe Premier related tasks. And sure enough there was no error message anymore! So if your Adobe product fails to start with an error in regards to being unable to load a module you might want to disable your virus scanner and firewall to check if they are to blame. I hope this might help all those lost with no useful support.

Hello geniuses. I have a computer setup at a remote location that is attached to a weather station that uploads data. Occasionally it will freeze up and won't report. I can't access the computer remotly by computer to restart it because of firewalls and whatnot. What I'm looking for is a switch that will once a day reboot the computer by actually pushing the reset button. In my company crapper there is an air freshener that juices the room every 45 minutes so I know switches like that exist. Is there a simple solution or do I steal the air freshener and hot wire it to the computer and have it restart every 45 minutes? Any help is greatly appreciated. A.

We had some nice projects at the show and tell. Small crowd, but enthusiastic. We had a wall-hanging piece of art/network firewall, a salvaged and modded electric scooter, a homemade drill, my little USB charging flashlight, and an ornithopter flying across the cafe. We took turns riding the scooter around the parking lot and ate a few snack cakes. It was fun seeing everyone's ingenuity in one spot. And by everyone, I mean both of us. It was great. And I got to keep all the leftover snacks! Thanks for the stickers; I handed out quite a few of them. All in all, it was a great success. Looking to see more people and more resourcefulness at the next show and tell.

Hi, I am using my laptop which is plugged into the internet via a cable as is my brother respectively in his room, our internet often comes up with an 'error, could not load' page when we try to access websites and then after a few seconds will sometimes load again but often does not manage to load web pages fully, my mother and other brother are also using the internet via a cable plugged in and their internet is perfectly fine. We have both tried switching to wifi or switching cables or changing our firewalls and nothing seems to work, it is also equally problematic whether there is 1 or 5 people using the internet, does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem could be or how to fix it? Thanks

The homepage no longer shows a background image behind the search bar. The search bar on the homepage doesn't show what I'm typing unless i highlight what i did type. And finally when i try searching for something the results page is full of nothingness where the thumbnails should be. This is a very annoying problem, i would like to search for the projects i want to as opposed to whatever is on the homepage. The site used to work perfectly on my computer but one day this issue came about and has not resolved itself. I tried everything to get this to work including disabling all my spam/ad blocker plugins and disabling my firewall with no results. i really want this fixed but i have run out of ideas for getting this resolved, please help!

I'm trying to comment on a really good project in a competition. I can see the window to type my comment in; I can see and use all the relevant buttons (Post, Preview, etc.). And I can see the explanation that "This helps us reduce spam". But there's no image there with the two words I need to type in to post the comment - no Captcha or similar image. When I type my comment and hit Post, I get the pop-up that tells me to type in the two words. But: no words, and no window to type them into. I'm on a Mac Air, 10.7.5. I tried this first in Firefox, where I admittedly have all kinds of blockers and firewalls up. But then I tried it in Safari, which has none of those. Still, no words, no window to type them in. What's up? Thanks in advance. And thanks for being such an incredibly cool site.

Well, I just recovered from the "Security Suite" Virus. It's a trojan-style virus that infects your computer, claims that everything is infected, and leads you to a legitimate-looking website. It doesn't allow any programs to run except itself and won't allow you to access any websites except it's fraudulent own. I feel incredibly lucky that whoever designed this virus sucks, and it's comparatively easy to get rid of. Here's what I did. First, if your computer is infected, turn it off and on again. Then when you're booting it up , hit F8 repeataly, so you enter a boot menu. From there, select "Enter Safe Mode with Networking". It will look all Windows 95-ey, but that's what it's supposed to do. From there, open Internet Explorer (I know, but we all have to make sacrifices for the cause...) and go to the Tools menu. From there, go to the bottom and hit "Internet Options...". Then, go to the connections tab, "LAN Settings" and uncheck the proxy server box. Then, you'll want to install CCleaner to get rid of the virus. Installation is simple, and then select "Run Cleaner" in-program. You'll also want to install RKill, to get rid of the other spyware associated with the virus. After that, install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, to add another layer of protection. Another method to do all of this with is burning CCleaner onto a CD with another computer and running it from there, but the internet worked fine for me. Another great product (These are all free) is ZoneAlarm firewall. It's a pretty good firewall, and asks you wether to allow or deny each item, which I wish I had installed, so I could've avoided this entirely. If you have ZoneAlarm, a heads up, the program that you shouldn't allow internet access (causes the virus) is completely random letters starting with an "r". And right now, I'm thinking, why isn't this an instructable? Lack of original pictures mostly. Thanks for reading, I hope I helped someone(s)!

I tried to go out this morning and post a reply to a comment, and got "Error on page" instead of the text entry box. I then tried to post a new Answer and got the same result. Finally, I tried to post a new comment on an Instructable and you guessed it: "Error on page". I verified that my internet connection was working, checked to make sure my firewall hadn't gotten fakakte'd overnight, installed a pending Java update and even rebooted the machine - no change. Is this just me or is it a more widespread issue? I am using IE8 and Win7. I am now hoping that this topic will post.... UPDATE: At least it's not just me: https://www.instructables.com/answers/HELP-PLEASE-I-CANT-COMMENT/ UPDATE 2: I just installed Firefox, and now I can see the text entry interface and key a reply. Had a couple of issues getting logged out every time I tried to submit a reply, but tweaking the Firefox settings seems to have fixed that. IE 8 is still an issue, though.

I'm fairly new to car audio. I just put in a Pioneer MVH-370BT headunit into my car, and while it is working great right now, it is evident that I'm going to need new speakers soon because the factory ones are not very good. I was looking at either the Kicker 40CS54 2-way speakers or the Kicker 41DSC54 2-way speakers because many people have recommended these speakers. The problem is on the website, the pioneer headunit only says it puts out 14 watts RMS power while the speakers say that they use up to 75 watt RMS. I'm trying to avoid getting an amp because I'm going to be putting the speakers in myself and i don't want to have to drill a hole through the firewall. So, my question is what will happen if I run the speakers with the 14 watt RMS receiver? Will it just not play very loud? Will the sound be very distorted if I try to play it loud? Is this bad for the speakers? Thanks!

Last night while collecting the mail, I noticed a glow coming from inside a car. The guy was sitting in the drivers seat with a laptop, and had a small antenna stuck on the roof of the car. He was running Ubuntu and was trying to connect into my wireless network. (WPA2 thankfully). I could even make out my SSID. I thought of knocking on the window, but I had a better idea. Went back inside and disconnected the modem from the router (just in case), and booted up a LiveCD of Puppy Linux. I created a ad-hoc wireless network as bait and waited. 5 minutes later someone was connected. The user connected was Darren-Lap. I got his IP address and managed to SSH into his laptop without any password prompts. Quick Google to see if I could send him any messages through the Terminal. Found a method and sent him a message saying if he didn't leave in 5 minutes there would be consequences. His reply: "F**K YOU! Suddenly the firewall was getting a lot of hits. A simple "sudo rm -rf /" command sorted him out. (http://is.gd/fE7cL - demonstration) So here's a tip: Try to hack into my network, and be prepared to lose. :)

Well, its nice to see the that the winner has common sense on his side.I've grabbed various bits of this from Gizmodo, whom got it from Tom's Hardware."I'd say that Macs are less secure for the reasons we've discussed here (lack of anti-exploitation technologies) but are more safe because there simply isn't much malware out there. For now, I'd still recommend Macs for typical users as the odds of something targeting them are so low that they might go years without seeing any malware, even though if an attacker cared to target them it would be easier for them."Be sure to read the Article before you start flaming. It mirrors what me and goodhart were saying before,A computers security is based entirely on the user.I used windows for over 2 years, with no anti-virus, no anti-spyware. Just a good firewall, and my common sense. My first rule of computing common sense is, only download pictures, music, and movies. If your going to get some illegal software get it from someone else whom has used the install files, and knows they work! Also, do not trust ll.13 when he links to your a serial website without informing you that most of them are Trojans.

Courtesy of Dr.Professor Jake Biggs, I was able to be innovative with my XBOX 360 and share my dial-up connection with my 360 through my computer. (The instructable can be found here.) However, seeing as I have a unique case, I thought this would be the best medium to use in looking for an answer. So let me explain my situation. Through much effort, I was able to procure the know-how of using my cell phone (LG Env3, not the touch though) as a modem. It is able to give me 7.2 Mbps at all times of the day and night via USB. I then realized it sets it up as a dial-up connection and decided to search out a way to share that connection with my XBOX 360 so as to get XBOX Live. Thanks to Jake Biggs, I was able to succeed in this endeavor. Now I am wondering if there is any way possible to open the appropriate ports under Firewall settings in order to get an Open NAT setting rather than a Moderate one. For those of you who play XBOX Live, you know how frustrating it is to not have an Open setting. Also it would be much appreciated if someone could help me out with the IP addressing. Many thanks to any who come by and put in their 2 cents about this. I'm open to any suggestions or theories.

OK, so I've been working on computers for years and have never seen anything like this... neither have any of my colleagues. I am trying to help someone out who has some issues with flash player. Basically flash player is installed on the computer, but whenever I visit youtube or another site with flash, it just shows a black square. I have run every virus scan I can think of (MBAM, Spybot, SAS, McAfee Stinger, HiJack This!, Norton Power Eraser, Kaspersky TDSS killer, Combofix, Avira) and all of them come up with nothing. I have tried reinstalling flash at least 5 times, removing every program that has even a remote possibly of conflicting (using Revo to be sure they are completely removed). I have disabled every startup program on the computer, updated every driver, rolled back, (then updated) every driver, and verified that all hardware is functional. I have also disabled their AV and firewall. Nothing works; except for when the computer is in safe mode. Then everything works fine. Can anyone think of anything I am missing? Thanks! Edit: I did try clearing cache and cookies as well. I also used multiple browsers (including Chrome; which has flash built right into it). I used Firefox portable as well... which should be running separately from any settings in the system. Also; I did Google the heck out of this one before posting, so no lmgtfy links please... ;)

Construction is nearing completion in Taipei of a plastic bottle building. Technically a temporary structure, "the world's lightest, movable, breathable environmental miracle" (say the designers) is also strong enough to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. The building will eventually become an exhibition space. Much is being made of the structure's "green" credentials - LED lighting, and particularly the construction material; 1,500,000 recycled PET bottles. That sounds great, and in most of the news coverage of the structure (such as the BBC and Treehugger) it sounds like the building is built directly of bottles that have been re-shaped somehow (maybe squashed in a heated mould). The bottles even have lids, and they talk about filling them with air, water or sand to change the thermal properties of the building.. It turns out, though, that the building material is not "PET bottles", but "PET bottles chopped up, melted and re-formed into much thicker-walled bottles intended solely for building", branded as Polli-Bricks. OK, still recycled, still greener than most building materials, but it smacks of spin to just say the building is built of bottles. The Polli-Bricks are impressive - individually nice to look at, and fitting together snugly "like Lego" - but there is no indication of how much energy is spent creating them. They are made by Hymini, but the Hymini website flashes up all sorts of alarms with my firewall and anti-virus as an "attack site". There is more information at Miniwiz as well, but some of the links there also trigger alarms. Maybe I'm being a wet blanket. It is a nice building, after all. What do you think? GreenMuze article

I have a broken iMac G4 17", the kind with the swivel neck. (when trying to reinstall OS X, hard drive cannot be found). Can you recommend some Instructables that detail what I (a complete beginner) can do with it? The fewer items I have to go out and buy the better (under $100 for extras like cases or wires). I would like to make it into a cd player, dvd player, a usb charging station, a server or a firewall but I think I need a functional hard drive for some of those ideas. I'd like ideas on what I could do with the computer (as a whole or the individual components) and I would like any other ideas that require little to no previous experience with only a few extra pieces to purchase. Thanks so much! EDIT: I'd like instructions on how to do what was suggested. I need either instructions on how to change the hard drive, how to hook up a mac mini too it, how to turn it into a dvd player, etc. All the suggestions so far are helpful, but I need instructions on how to accomplish them. If you have a link to how to accomplish one of them, that would be perfect.

Is anyone else out there over the whole, turn on the computer "Oh. More viruses, delete, delete, delete" thing? It's getting old... Really old...My computer is stuffed, there are so many pop-ups yours won't get through anyway, It is so slow now I can't go to your sites and if I have to hear the "gummi bear" song one more time, I'll smash the computer which = no pop-ups at all!!!You know what would REALLY SHOCK ME ??Turning on my PC and actually have it work for a change... Instead of HaCkIn' PC's and damaging them, why not use your powers for good 'ole surprise factor... remember those days?? before profitiering arose. Why not let's say...Hack-in > Fix everything > delete all my viruses and set up a impenetrable firewall for me...Now that would make me remember your attack, instead of just deleting your infection like every other one.....I had been thinking about that for a while....Until last week when I received a new virus...After some analysis, it was found to be a simple crash virus for Internet explorer...Much to my amazement this little file crashes IE, resulting in all my annoying pop-ups from IE (I use Opera) having their window closed as soon as they open.... LoL!!!This is great!! No more pop-ups!!Thank you Mr or MrS HaCkEr for fixing my computer... You rock!!Anyone else had a weird or offbeat experience from a hack attack..?

I am in the beta testing stages of a program I recently developed. One of the problems that I have with it is that anti-virus programs tend to block it due to the fact that they do not recognise it. Also, microsoft smart screen and google chrome try to block it because it is not a commonly downloaded file (yet... yes, I tend to be optimistic). In addition to the program not being well known, the program is designed to automate tasks used in computer repair... especially remote computer repair. This can make good antivirus programs suspicious since a lot of what technicians do to a computer could also be used maliciously (some of the tasks that this program does are editing the registry, turning the firewall on and off, etc. just to name a few). Is there an easy way to get my program recognised as a safe application by these programs? I have tried sending the file to the antivirus companies for analysis on the programs that support that feature, but evidently they are too busy or just don't care since my program is still blocked. Thanks in advance for your help! Edit: Here is a detailed explanation of what the program does... it is broken into two different parts (1) automated remote access and (2) a technician's toolkit. So basically my original idea was to create a program to automate the sending of remote assistance invitations (since I was just getting fed up with walking people through how to setup a remote assistance program over the phone). This program just prompts for a ticket number (obtained from the technician on the phone); then creates an .msrcIncident file using the ticket number as the password. Once the technician connects, the remote program has the toolbox built into it (I am also making the toolbox available separately). This toolbox prompts the technician to select which tools the technician thinks he/she will need; and then downloads those programs automatically. Once the programs are downloaded, it allows the technician to launch them from the program, or if the technician later realises that he/she needs more programs than he/she originally downloaded; they can download them directly from the toolbox. Most of the programs have portable versions that the toolbox deletes on exit; but for the few programs that do not have a portable version, there is a shortcut to uninstall the program. Any programs that are still installed are automatically uninstalled when the toolbox closes, it deletes the portable versions, closes any pinholes that it opened to allow the remote assistance through, etc. Basically the same things that we do every time that we go to a computer; only a lot easier and faster. Since the program is not built to allow anything malicious to be done with it, I'm sure that anyone who reviewed the code would find that it is fine. I'm not asking if there is a way for the antivirus programs to blindly trust my program... I wouldn't want that either. What I am asking is would there be any way to send these anti-virus companies my source code to have them analyse it? Thanks!
