Any ideas for a small hoist to lift an air conditioner out of a window that is about 3 feet off the floor and lower it to the floor for transport to another room. It would be helpful if it was small enough to fold and fit in a VW trunk. It should have casters on the bottom.

wooden deck lift system?

Is there a simple method for making a pulley/lift mechanism for hauling up groceries, firewood, deck furniture, etc. from ground to 2nd story? needs to be off-set from deck rail by 2 feet. hand cranked? thanks.

Does anyone have a hoist system to raise my garden tractor cab off the tractor and store on the ceiling of my garage?

I am looking for some help in designing a simple pulley system to lift my Garden Tractor Cab off my John Deere Riding Tractor and store it in my garage. It's a hard roof on my all-weather cab and weighs about 150 pounds max. I would be attaching it to the roof of my garage (both cab doors come off). I want to be able to back the tractor into the garage..and have this system allow me to lift it off, raise to the ceiling and store it until next winter. I have a bad arm so it's tough for me to manage it without this. thanks!

What is the least destructive way to mount something that will hold about 100lbs?

I'm building a bike mount in my dorm room. I found that with our top floor high slanting ceilings that I fit the bike above with out bumping my head into it, or having it get in the way at all. The tough part if mounting it to the ceiling while still be able to repair the holes when I move out. My bike is angry at me that I leave it out in the rain all the time! Thanks for the help!

How do I make a pulley system to lift a model train display table, while keeping the table horizontal? Answered

My son wants to be able to permanently keep his model train layout fully made up, but we have no space in the house.  I was thinking of making a model display table for in the garage but need a way to easily lift it into the roof space for storing.  The table would need to be kept horizontal while lifted otherwise the trains would fall off the tracks.  I hope the table to be approx. 10' x 6' and presumably lifted from a minimum of 8 points (4 corners + 2 on each long side)

Need control box for 8 electric hoists, can someone help?

I am making a control box for 8 electric hoists.  I want to use 8 DPDT toggle switches for directionality (up or down) and use a push button for movement. Example:  I want to be able to move hoists 1 and 2 up and 3 down at the same time.  The hoists I'm using currently have individual pickles with rocker DPDT switches but want to combine them all into a single box.   If someone could help that would be great.

How can I control the up/down movements of an electric hoist?

I have a hoist that is a northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200660033_200660033. I would like to control the hoist's toggle switch circuit which has a LMG CBB60 capacitor (25uF+ or - 5%, 250V AC C40/70/21 50/60HZ). The hoist is 110V, 125 watt output, 1.5 Amps, 1.7 HP with a lifting speed of 16.4 ft/minute. The duty cycle is 10 minutes at 20%. The weight to be lifted is less than 50 pounds. The hoist also has a limit switch.  I would like to be able to specify 15 up/down movements of the hoist that can be repeated. My question is how can I do this? Any comments are greatly appreciated. Please see the attached images of the limit switch and the toggle switch. The toggle switch includes a large capacitor which is just shown on the right side of the photograph.

Mars hooked up a winch so he could hoist stuff to the ceiling easily, creating instant ceiling storage space. Of course, we had to test it first. For structural strength.

Lawn Mower PTO???

Have bunch of pullys from several weight systems (weider) and i also have plenty of scrap metal, angel iron square bar etc.  is there any ides or plans for anything i could possibly make w/ it, excluding generators... IDK maybe hoist, wench, air compressor pump... i will be using the bottom pully from my lawn mower, the one that runs the mower deck...???? any and all ides welcom, thanks guys

A Challenge: DIY gravity lamp

I have decided to power the lighting in my house with gravity alone starting next year. The idea started here: Greener Gadgets: Gravity LampI have some ideas about how to make it possible using some existing instructables and I though I would share this to get people thinking about new ways to use gravity as a power source. Think about it, gravity is clean, constant, eternal and EVERYWHERE. I think that this instructable has some of the essential components: Cordless Drill Crank Charge BatteriesIt gives a basic example of kinetic energy being converted into electricity, but for this application the kinetic energy will be supplied by gravity instead of the hand crank. The real fun with this project, I think, is the different ways that the kinetic energy of the weight can be harnessed. The screw used by the Gravity Lamp is just one method. A weight on a rope that is wrapped around a spool or crank is another option or even something based on the mechanism of a grandfather clock. One could even imagine a single massive weight that the whole family would hoist, with the help of pulleys, every evening to power their home lighting. Who knows.....It's time to start a gravity revolution.

Multi-function, multi-materials workshops?

I'm on a small rural acreage. My shop situation is that I’ve got two separate, fairly compact spaces for working with wood (or general “handyman” repairs for the home) and for working with metal (cutting, welding, grinding, etc). My metal area is where I also often work with small-engine equipment. These spaces are located inconveniently, separated by nearly 100 feet! I think about how I might like to combine functions under one roof. So I’m posting to try to coax some of you people to show me how you may have done this. Or examples you've found on the internet (give URLs). Obviously, no one wants to get sawdust into an area where torch flames or electric-welding sparks could cause a hazard. And you wouldn’t want to get engine lubricants or solvents mixed up with wood projects. Discussion and description are fine, but I’d really like to see pictures or floor-plan diagrams if possible.  I need examples that represent modest investment, as I could probably only afford to build an enclosure of about 16x24 ft, with a bay door. ( Yes - could probably learn something from shops that are somewhat bigger than this.) In grandfather's day, farm shops were usually multi-purpose. You know, for "bench carpentry", and maintaining or servicing the truck or tractor, welding bailer components back together, etc. Often had a tablesaw, maybe a bandsaw - besides the hoist, welders, socket wrenches. I suppose sometimes a fire did occur in one shop or another, but probably not often.  I'd like to see some more modern versions, rather than just the "version" I have in terms of vague memories. From “garage” concept to multi-materials workshop: ideas, layouts?

The common concept of a “garage” (the ’man cave’ stereotype) is a place to work on cars and/or motorcycles. How could this be adapted to be a place, under a single roof, to work on small engines, and projects chiefly involving wood as the material, and ones made from steel and/or other metals? Situation: I’ve now got two separate and pretty compact spaces on my rural acreage for working with wood and for working with metal (including work with small-engine equipment). These spaces are located at inconvenient distance.  I’m wanting to conceptualize how I might combine functions under one roof. Needn’t be said: no one wants to get sawdust into the area where torch flames or electric-welding sparks could cause a hazard. And you wouldn’t want to get engine lubricants or solvents mixed up with wood projects, or near flames.  There are people who have done this combo successfully, but few available layout diagrams or photos on the internet - I’ve searched, a lot!  I need input, hopefully including some illustrations of examples.  I’ll only be able to afford a modest investment, possibly 16x24 ft building or a bit larger, with a bay door. (Part of what a bay door would facilitate would be taking welding processes just out of the shop, to work on outdoors during fair weather.) I know that just a few decades ago small-farm shops were often multi-purpose, and used for "bench carpentry", also for maintaining or servicing the truck or tractor, welding bailer components back together, etc. They often had a tablesaw and a bandsaw - besides the hoist, welders, cabinets of wrenches… certainly both a woodworking vice and a “bench vise” for metal.
