lightsabers

i had a thought for making a light saber the other day. if you took a florescent tube light and put it in a tight fiting transparent tube for stregnth and added a handle on one side with a this copper wire runing to the other end then you could make a light saber. no leds just a florecent tubelight. it would glow like a real one and could be wrapped in colored cellophane to produce different colors. it is a totally workable idea and a good one. only problem is that it won't shrink but it still would be pretty cool. the handle could house the tube driver circuit and the batters with a small switch for lighting it up.

how can i make an arm mounted lightsaber?

i know that an arm mounted lightsaber is just an overglorified lightsaber casing made by making a gauntlet that holds a force action lightsaber and then having a hand lever that pushes the button thereby making the lightsaber extend and light up and then the said hand lever goes back to its original position and locks into place. thereby making a cool hidden lightsaber effect but I'm stumped on how to make the gauntlet itself

Steampunk lighsaber?

I found some scrap brass lying around and wanted to make something steampunk. The only metal I had lying around was brass. I found a 6 in. shaft that was just begging to be a lightsaber. I attached a male coupling to one end the shaft, and a female coupling to the other end. It sort of has a steampunk vibe to it. Right now the only material being used is brass and I have not permanently attached anything. I looked at a bunch of lightsaber tutorials for ideas but I want to keep the steampunk aesthetic. Do you think this is even a good idea?

Top 10 Lightsaber Mash Ups

"The Star Wars kid has gotten a lot of shite over the years, mainly because he's not a professional. He simply didn't have the training necessary to pull off that fight sequence. On the other hand, there are lots of professionals who do have the training and simply lack the means to wield it. I'm talking about people like Aragorn, Captain Jack Sparrow, and Westley. If somehow you could only put a lightsaber in these fearsome warriors hands...Ugh, blogging. What am I even talking about? Let's just be ourselves, you guys. I found a bunch of clips on YouTube where people took fight sequences from other movies and overlaid lightsabers on top of them using magic, and they are hilarious, and you're gonna love it."Link

Is there a way to lengthen the plastic blade of the basic toy lightsabers (about 12 dollars)?

I like how this particular model retracts all the way into the hilt, but the blade is very short, and in conjunction with my stature it seems even shorter. Holding the toy up to the light I can see that there is a lot of plastic that is behind the other pieces. Is there a way to utilize this and make the blade longer?

Any ideas for what i can do with an empty Star Wars Darth Maul Lightsaber Candy Stick?

Picked one up for under a dollar at Salvos last year, and it's been sitting at the bottom of my wardrobe since. I have yet to open it up, but I reckon it should be completely hollow inside. It's about 33 cm long, 3 cm wide at the emitter heads and about an inch wide around the middle. Also, there is a blade on each end similar in construction to the toys you see in department stores, but only 12cm long. What should I do with it?

Photo Scavenger Hunt: Your Mom Edition

Hello everyone!  I've got some patches that are burning a hole in my pocket, and I'd love to share them with you! Here is my plan:  on a not at all regular schedule, I will come up with a harebrained idea for a strange and/or difficult to acquire picture.  I will take an example picture and post it in the community blog.  You will then go and take your own version of said picture and post it here in the comments, and in return I will send you a patch.  Sound good?  This needs to be your original picture, but if you feel the need to cover your face or whatever, that's fine.  Just make sure that you identify yourself in some way, say with a sign or something with your username on it.  For example, if I cared about preserving my anonymity I would wear a paper bag over my head with eye holes cut out and "Depot Devoid" written on it in sharpie. Photoshop is fine to touch up pictures, but don't overdo it.  I don't want any pictures that are completely photoshopped fabrications . . . unless they are really awesome.  I reserve the right to be the sole judge of what is awesome and my decisions are totally arbitrary and cannot be appealed to a higher authority.  I AM THE HIGHER AUTHORITY MWA HA HA HA!!!! Anyway, here's your first Photo Scavenger Hunt objective:  A picture of you and your mom (or grandma, or some reasonable facsimile thereof), engaged in lightsaber combat . . . to the death! Go forth my minions, and bring me pictures!

What is the easiest way to fade in and out/pulse leds?

Consists of 21 blue leds connected in parallel taken from one of those cheap toy lightsabers. Before disassembly, the leds were powered by an on/off switch and 3 AA batteries. All options considered - 555 PWM, PIC, or even descrete components. Finally, circuit to be powered from 5V-9V.

Star wars fans look here!

This is it, the most durable knex lightsaber ever imagined. Each piece doubles up the next creating a blade that will not bend nor break, even with high speed collision. The hilt (figure 2) is also quite detailed considering this is made with knex. The only con to this is that the blade doesn't retract. If you like what you see then tell me. I will make it an instructable if asked.

Lighted Wand

So, I've had an idea I wanted to try and make but i have no experience with electronics and was hoping to do it all with hardware only, no software. The idea is this, I have a wand which has an LED strip (like a lightsaber, but a lot smaller) which connects to two buttons/switches. First button/switch if held down it will pulse/glow the LED at the base of the wand (charging up spell) and when you release it "shoots" up the LED strip (like you're firing a spell). Second switch just lights the LED at the tip of the wand, making it like a torch (LUMOS).Any ideas on how I could achieve such a feat? Point me in the right direction? I have knowledge on how to solder and such and have taken very basic electronics. Currently trying to make a lightsaber, hoping to get some experience so I can make my eventual goal, the wand. Most of the instructables I've seen so far have been very simple with a single LED at the end.Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

WickedLasers Unleashes 1w Blue Laser Upon the Masses, or All Your Lightsaber Dreams Have Been Fulfilled

The good folks at Wicked Lasers unveiled their latest handheld high power laser: the Spider III Pro Arctic packs a blistering 445nm, blue, 1W beam that can SET YOU ON FIYAH for a mere $197.97. Wait wasn't the last one like 2 grand? Yup. Go check it out yourself, the website is loading slowly, presumably trampled under cyber foot as loads of people go to drool and purchase theirs. I'll wait. ... Yeah, it is real. Yeah, I want one too. Lasting 2 hours on a single charge, and sporting a scifilicous anodized aircraft aluminum body, this beauty packs quite a punch, apparently it is capable of setting bare flesh on fire almost instantly. Ouch. Now I REALLY want one. Who needs a gun when the tactical laser will make any offender scream and run away?

Tauntaun Sleeping Bag

Once again, ThinkGeek has hatched an April Fool's joke that sparked so much interest, they're now looking into production rights. This awesome Tauntaun sleeping bag was just one of several spoof products that TG game up with to prank its audience. In response to their onslaught of letters, they're promising their best to bring it life. From ThinkGeek:Use the glowing lightsaber zipper pull on the Tauntaun sleeping bag to illustrate how Han Solo saved Luke Skywalker from certain death in the freezing climate of Hoth by slitting open the belly of a dead Tauntaun and placing Luke inside the stinking (but warm) carcass. If your kids don't change their tune on which Star Wars film is the greatest ever, you can do your best Jar Jar impression until they repent. via: consumerist

Opening and closing beam katana (Tsubaki from No More Heroes)

I recently decided I'm going to go as Travis Touchdown for Halloween, and a friend and I decided we were going to attempt to make the Tsubaki Beam Katana. (the one in the middle)We've thought about making one that is always closed, (not able to extend out to open position) so I can wear it on my belt. But where's the fun in that. So we thought of course about making one that will always be extended out, (not able to collapse into closed position) but it would be cumbersome at times that I would need both my hands wherever I was, and I don't like putting things down, just so I can come back to it to see that it's been handled by someone else and broken, (I plan on it being sturdy, but still, someone will find a way) or even worse... missing. So I guess the only option would be to make a fully functioning one (being able to extend and collapse through the use of buttons, and when extended out, pressing a switch to turn on a light for the "beam")So basically thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm3crEC-fAw#t=0m5sexcept without the hitting of people part. lolThere is multiple ways I've thought on how to approach this, the simplest, but non awesome way, would be to just use gravity, like the old school toy lightsabers. If there's no other way, I guess that will be what I have to end up doing. But, lets not give up so soon shall we? I've thought of using a long spring, but the only place I thought of where to put that would be in the tube that would light up for the 'beam', but once lit up you would be able to see the shadow of the spring projected onto the tube, and I don't really want that. Another idea was to use air pressure somehow, I really don't know how though, this kind of stuff isn't exactly my forte. And my last idea was some gears that could possibly be used on the stick piece that extends on the outside of the beam, to hold the top of the whole beam katana, but that might be hard to pull off since that piece is going to be sectioned like an antenna that extends out.So what I'm asking for is different ideas that I could possibly use to get this thing to shoot open on command. I would like for it to shoot open and snap closed, but being able to get it to only shoot open seems more plausible in this situation. (and just manually close it by hand) But if you have ideas for it to open AND close on command, then please share, for I just may try it.Thank you for your time in reading this, and any help you have to offer.
