The Inverted Map

This map reimagines the Earth with the idea that the oceans are the land masses and the continents are the oceans. It's interesting to see a world map where everything is connected and it would be possible to walk the entire circumference. It reminds us that what is "normal" comes from our own personal experiences.Whether the map is a Mercator map, a Peters map, or a map of something besides the Earth, that map can have a huge effect on how you perceive it. Just like statistics, maps can be deceiving so make sure you're questioning the sources and get the best information you can. link

Simpsons Map

The Simpsons are awesomely hilarious. I remember when my parents thought it was too vulgar for my child mind to handle. And now it's a very tasteful and often smart cartoon. Some dude took the time to collect all the different locations from every episode and created this completely insane map.I guess if you ever plan to visit The Simpsons you'll know how to get around.Oh, if you want to brush up on your episodes, here's where you can watch them online for free, legally:The Simpsons Episodes.

Instructables member map

Sometimes we find a project that we’d like to actually see and touch. Other times we have resources (components, equipment, etc.) that we’d like to give away or barter for help with another project. This website is an excellent resource to build up a community of makers. Also, 5 years ago I posted a project requesting help and I haven't received any answers, yet. I think that part of the problem is that not everybody reads the forums. In many cases, when we see a project that we'd like to develop, not knowing where the maker is located dissuade us to pursue such project. I think that we need to develop a reference map showing the city or town where we are located. That way we could develop more synergy and by doing that, increase our resourcefulness and benefit all members. Don’t you think so? P.S. I’m not a computer guy, but I understand that for some of you the Google API is not a problem.

PTAM 3D Mapping?

Hi, I've been looking around for a cheap 3D scanning system for fun and I was wondering if anyone has tried out PTAM or PTAMM for 3D  scanning?  Can these programs record point cloud datasets and pass that info to other computer applications (like the Blender point cloud skinner script)  to convert the points into 3D models?  This could be a way to make a 3D scanner for like $10 or $20 (or free if you already have a camera). Here are a couple links for the info: PTAM PTAMM http://ewokrampage.wordpress.com/projects-using-ptam/ Blender Script I was thinking to try it out in a week or two when I have some free time but it'd be fun to know if anyone has some experience with it! Thanks

If you don't know what I mean by weather map you can see todays here: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/index.php?product=weathermaps&pagecontent;=weathermaps&maptype;=sys. If you know where I can get one for the 25th I would really appreciate it. (I am in Canada, so one that shows Canada would be most relevant to me, but any would help. thanks in advance

Where can I find a free Ebay sales map (similar to mystoremaps)? Pro Membership to the first good answer!

I recently decided to try out mystoremaps on Ebay.  It is pretty easy to use, but I don't like that the free version only includes a map of North America.  I have quite a bit of international sales, so I want something that shows all of them.  I would rather have something that can be updated easily too. Is there a free map tool that works in a similar fashion?  I really just want a map with a lot of red dots on it to mark where each sale has taken place.  I think mystoremaps has a pretty easy system set up for this task.  I just do not want to pay a monthly fee to show other continents. Here is one of my auctions so you can see what it looks like.  The map is at the bottom of the item description. Like I said in the title, the first good answer will get a code to upgrade to a Pro Member on Instructables.

Steampunk wrist-mounted scrolling map

Found this at Boing BoingOver on Boing Boing Gadgets, our John spotted this vintage wrist-mounted scrolling map from 1927, an antediluvian wrist-mounted GPS: At first glance, this 1927 map watch is pretty nifty: an antediluvian GPS, don't you know. It was called the Plus Four Wristlet Route Indicator, a name so clunky, unmemorable and artless that it even sounds like the name of a modern GPS device. The idea was simple: the Wooster-esque motorist would putter around England, scrolling a tiny paper map loaded in his wrist as he went with two black knobs. If you took a turn, you simple slid out one map and inserted another one and continued on your way. What ho! Ingenious! Except a complete road map only cost a few pence back in 1927, where as this device would have set you back around 5 quid. And just like modern GPS map providers, the real business model was in selling you additional maps. Which leaves the design. I quite like it: it's cheap, but whimsical and adventurous, like something you might strap on your wrist to traverse Oz. LinkLooks pretty cool and steampunkish. I would love to have one.

Roomba mapping and quadriplegic assistive device

Hello,I am a high school student in the San Francisco bay area. After attending Maker fair this past weekend and talking to the instructables staff, i am going to take on one of your challenges and developing a roomba mapping platform, and much more. Because i am still a student, i don't have the funding to purchase my own roomba, so this is my application for the scholarship. I have attended many lectures that have been made by the Stanford DARPA team, i would like to take some of their ideas and apply it to the roomba platform. My roomba will be able to map it's surrounding, where it will then process that information, creating an optimum route. I will also utilize complete use of all the sensors that are provided so you can keep track of everything that is going on. Mapping will be one feature, there are plenty more. A nice control system for your roomba will be made so you can access everything you need to know about battery life, run time, dirt picked up, etc....in a nice GUI layout. RSS feed can also be sent to your laptop or cell phone so you know what exactly is happening with your roomba. And because this platform will be used very often to guard my precious projects, i will throw on a wi-fi video camera and control system. This will enable me to control the roomba over the internet to scout around and see what my dog is up to. The video feed will also be told to record one pass around the entire house, if anything abnormal appears (chair knocked over, loud nosies, etc.)I am also a member of this years Palo Alto High School Lemelson-MIT invent team. Our project is to create an assistive device for quadriplegics so that they can control their world using countless lase r activated household items. Our quadriplegics friend Henry Evans said that it would be amazing to be able to control a roomba that drives around and plays with his dog. I will make it my personal goal to create a platform which henry can use to control this roomba using the assistive technology our team is developing. (http://robotics.paly.net/)There are plenty of other things i would like to add on if i have the time. The main goal is to make the roomba map it's surroundings, and be controllable by our friend Henry.I have so many more ideas i would like to add on to this if i have the time, and i ensure you that i am very capable to complete these goals by the required time frame. I'm very excited to take on this project, and i believe that with your help i can really do something amazing here that can be appreciated by the entire robotic community.--Daniel FukubaPalo Alto High School

Is it possible to map data to values in C (for AVR)? Answered

I am trying to make a USB 8x8 pixel LED screen that will display single characters received over serial emulation. I have a proof of concept device but due to my lack of knowledge of C I'm struggling slightly with a specific aspect of the code. To display a character I need to take the 'source' char (such as 0x41) and look it up in the flash memory of the AVR, returning an array of chars (which will be used to render the character). It would be desirable for that information to reside in its own file (a Header perhaps?) - because this would enable multiple interchangeable fonts. This is certainly possible in PIC micro-controller (I made a program utilising data blocks in Assembler a while ago for PIC) and I can't imagine that it's difficult on an Assembler level for AVR either, but I am unsure what I am looking for in the C language. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Drew P.S. I'm a Java programmer but new to C and AVR.

Trying to make an LED Map, so placing an led anywhere on the map will make it light, any help?

I'm trying to make a map so that I can place an LED anywhere through it and it'll light up. Kind of like the old push pin method only the push pin is a single LED and I can place as many as I want on the map wherever it may be and it'll light up. I found one online but it's very expensive so I was trying to see if I can build one. The only thing I can find online that would help would be conductive foam but I don't know what to do with it, my guess would be to connect a ground pin and a positive pin into the foam, wire those up to a plug, plug it into the wall and the foam would send power anywhere leaving me to place the led through the map and into the foam and having the led light up. Here's a link to what I found online and I'd like to recreate it. Can anyone tell me how please? http://www.worldmapsonline.com/LEDworldmap.htm

Why would an empty std::map seg fault on the first insert? Answered

I've got a weird C++ problem which make no sense to me.  I have a class containing a std::map<> data member, which I fill during the initialization process.  On my Mac (OSX 10.5.8, GCC 4.0.1), the map is filled perfectly fine, and the data is accessed when the job runs with no problem.  When I build and run on Linux (RHEL 5.6, GCC 4.1.2), the std::map<> itself seg-faults the first time something is inserted. I've tried the insert with both table[key] = value and with table.insert(std::pair<>(key,value)) and I get the identical result. For some reason, std::map<>::insert_unique() doesn't recognize that the map is empty, and it tries to decrement one position before begin(), triggering the seg-fault. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to explicitly zero the map (the constructor should do that itself, shouldn't it?)?

What did Google Maps cameras discover over a lake in Switzerland?

Google Maps have been taking "street view" images for a number of years now, and they've captured some interesting things... In this case, there's a ghostly figure that appears over a lake in Switzerland. If you want to see it with your own eyes, go to Google Maps.   Copy and paste these coordinates for the location: 47.110579, 9.227568   Zoom in until you are in street view.   Then look to the sky (North-West over the lake). Was this just a strange camera anomaly? or something more divine?

'Revolutionary' CO2 maps zoom in on greenhouse gas sources

Researchers now have a better view of where carbon dioxide is being emitted thanks to Vulcan, a research project led by Kevin Gurney, an assistant professor at Purdue. This map shows where CO2 is being emitted in the continental United States in 10-kilometer grids and combines data from sources including factories, automobiles on highways and power plants. The map offers more than 100 times the detail of previous inventories of carbon dioxide. The image displays metric tons of carbon per year per grid in a logarithmic base-10 scale.more at Physorg
