netbook virus?

My daughter's netbook has an icon in the bottom-right that keeps wanting me to activate a malware protection program which I think is bogus. Every time I try to open anything it pops up and error message in the corner saying "file iexplore.exe is infected by W32/Blaster.worm please activate malware protection to protect your computer". It says this for anything I try to open. I tried running MSCONFIG to disable it but got the same message. I can't get any virus programs online b/c of this error. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Got same error trying system restore as well). Thanks,

GPS on a Netbook

So, I finally picked a netbook, ended up with an Eee PC 1016P (not pictured). Well, I bought it two weeks ago, but the magic of UPS math meant that 3-day shipping took a week, so it arrived at home the day after I went back to school. Point is... The thing seems like a great candidate to install a GPS module, given its size and battery life. In a topic from my young(er) and stupid(er) days, LasVegas suggested I get a Holux GR 213, which wasn't helpful three and a half years ago, but is now. I guess my real question is, what are my options? I'd like to come as close as I can to replicating the Garmin Nuvi 350 I've been using, but I'm also stingy. I've seen packages of software and antenna for $100 or more, but I'm thinking more like $30-$40 for the antenna and free software, if it exists.

Help me choose a laptop! -MAJOR UPDATE-

I just found out that I won a scholarship that writes me a check for $1,500. I already have college fees paid for through National Merit, so this is considered my laptop fund. I'm holding off for a few months to actually buy something (not much need right now, so I might as well wait for prices to drop a bit longer), but I want to get the Instructables Community's input on what to get. Here's what I want: -Highly portable laptop to carry to classes. I have a desktop for a real workhorse; the laptop only needs to be capable of basics. Anything past the basics is a bonus. -Screen no larger than 13", but no smaller than 8". 1366x768 or greater would be nice. Portability! I If I really need a big screen, I can plug in another monitor. -A touchscreen would be lovely, but not a requirement. -Built-in webcam would be nice. -Possibly a convertible tablet, but I'm not sold on that wee little hinge. A fold-flat drawing surface would be excellent, though. -I love a keyboard light, especially backlit. -Windows or Linux. NOT A MAC. I appreciate Apple's aesthetics, but I don't like the big brick walls they build around everything. Windows isn't really a bonus, just something I'd be okay with. -Not much more than $1000. Until I'm substantially wealthier than I am now, I don't see a reason to spend inordinate amounts of money on something that will be obsolete in a few years anyway. -I rather like the Eee PC T91, if it had a 10" screen, a HDD or a higher-capacity SSD, and assurance that the little swivel-hinge won't splinter the first time it's pulled open too far. I also rather like the Quanta NL2, despite it's Fisher-Price appearance, at least if Intel actually will sell one. So, after doing my own research, I've decided that I want a 10" screen with HD. The future Asus Eee PC 1018P fits the bill perfectly except for this...Atom N475 processor, crazy thin, 10-hour battery, aluminum body, USB 3.0, and the ability to put a multitouch digitizer in. It doesn't, however, have the HD display of the Eee PC 1005PR. In short, I want a 1018P with the display from a 1005PR. Any suggestions, or rumors of future Asus releases? Okay, so I ended up getting a 1016P. A week before Intel announced the dual-core Atom N550 and just under two weeks before HP announced a revised Mini 5103 with that N550. I'm consoling myself with the knowledge that no matter what computer I had chosen, it will be obsolete by the time about the time I have a job and can buy a new one.

Best sub $800 netbook?

I'm looking to purchase a netbook, with a maximum budget of $800, I just wanted to put it out to you guys... what do you think is the best. I already own a laptop, so no suggestions there, thanks. I'm strictly looking for something small and easy to carry around and use on the plane. I'm not concerned about OS, but want something capable of at least running ubuntu, preferably XP, but I don't really want to pay extra, as I'd prefer to install it myself. I want the biggest hard drive possible, and a long battery life. I want something capable of watching video from the hard disk. I don't really care about added extras such as a webcam or card reader. With size, I want something bigger than an eee pc, but not so big that I might as well use a full sizzed notebook, something slightly bigger than a portable DVD player would be good. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Tablet PC From Netbook? Answered

Hello Everyone :) I'm new to this community, though I'm not new to DIY projects. I hope somebody can help me out, I need some help with a proposed project of mine.  I have an old Acer Aspire one 751h and it's an 11.6 inch netbook, LED screen, and I'm willing to tear it down to make a windows tablet. I know I need a touch screen kit, but I need help choosing one, I don't mind resistive ( I know it's very hard to find a multi touch 11.6 inch touch screen kit) In fact, I would say I would prefer ressistive as It's cheaper. One more thing, is it possible to use a larger touchscreen on a smaller screen and then calibrate it? as long as it's the same aspect ratio? For the tablet case/ body, inverting the screen and using the original Acer aspire one 751h case isn't hard, but if it's possible to use perspex or a material like that ( no carbon fibre please) I would like a few pointers. I don't mind the tablet having a rectangular feel/ look, as long as it's easy and practical to build. I also have an old  8x6 inch graphics tablet with 1024 levels of sensitivity, is there any way I can use this along with the touchsreen for input? Like behind the screen.  The netbook runs Full HD content and windows 7 fine and has a 16:9 aspect ratio screen, one of the reasons I'm keen on the project . Thanks a lot ! :)

How can I keep my netbook dry? Answered

There's a possibility that in a few months I'll want to have my netbook while living in a tent for a week, which I can't guarantee against leaking or flooding. Thus, the requirement is basically that the netbook remain dry if wherever it is sitting has an inch or so of water on it. I have a water-resistant neoprene sleeve, but it doesn't seal, so it won't help in submersion. I've considered a Pelican 1080, which would work brilliantly but costs $70 or more, and a large Ziploc-type bag, which can hardly be beat for cost but is rather crude and doesn't offer the same level of protection. I suppose I'm looking for options somewhere between the two. The netbook is 10.25" x 7" x 7/8"-1 3/8", but something that would let me fit the power brick in too would be great.

I use a Dell Axim X51, running WM 5.0, with an SDIO WiFi g card and use it mostly to read books using MobiPocket software. I'm wondering if it's possible to graft on a 7 inch touchscreen and use it as an internet tablet. I don't really need a keyboard, although that would be a nice addition.

How small could you make a working computer?

I originally wrote this as a reply to rimar2000 in another forum.  It seems sufficiently interesting to warrant a separate discussion thread. How small could you make a fully-operational personal computer (say, something with the capability of a Netbook).  I think the technology already exists to make one the size of a deck of playing cards: Hundreds of GB of storage in something the size of a little MP3 player WiFi transceivers fit inside a standard USB "thumbdrive" casing Projected keyboards could be integrated (not a separate box) The same technology could make an RGB projected display A small footprint CPU (maybe with "embedded Linux") ought to be practicalWithout a big display, hard drive, etc., you don't need much power at 5V to drive everything.  A standard cellphone battery (say 3.7V, 1000 mAh) ought to be enough to run such a machine for a couple of days between charges.I'm not competent enough as an electronics engineer to prototype something like this, but it seems like a really great challenge for the DIY experts out there.  How small could you make a working PC using existing current technology?

How can I attatch an external antenna to my HSDPA netbook, without soldering wires to the internal antenna?

Just gota new netbook (Advent 4213) that has built in HSDPA (ie, a sim card slot for mobile internet). My problem is that where I work there is a very weak signal - I've looked at a couple of antennas, but there's no socket in the netbook to plug one in! The inbuilt antenna is on the bottom. Can anyone recommend a way to non-permanently attatch something, like velcro, etc, to boost the signal? It's just info on what sort of connection I could use. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Instructables!!!!!!!

Hi Friends!!!!!! When I saw the Dead Computer Contest, my first thought was "This netbook will be mine!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!", and started with the Cyborg project. It was a week working, and the last two nights without sleep. And finally happened! When I was waiting for my netbook, I dreamed carrying the computer everywhere in my backpack... SWEEEEEET!! But, when I opened the box, I saw love at first sight between the netbook and my mother, who had a big smile in her eyes when saw the beautiful computer. As my mother never had a brand new computer for her (she always had to depend of my old notebook or my brother's new one), I gift it to her. If you could have seen the happiness in her eyes eyes when I did that... I only have words of gratitude and respect for you, for all the Instructables team. Thanks Eric (ewilhelm), Randy (Randofo), Fungus Amungus, Stumpchunkman, Noah (noahw), Instructables Robot, THANKS TO ALL!!!!!! You made my mom happy, and made me happier!!! As I always say, being part of this community and wear the Robot T-shirt is a privilege, an honor and a pride for me, and I hope to make a lot of important contributions for all the members of this, the World's greatest DIY page!! And I want to thanks to all my friends and comrades who voted for me in the contest. THANK YOU!!! And Randy, your book is AWESOME. IT'S A MASTERPIECE!!!!! Thank you people!!! Dell inspiron mini 10 / 10v bad points? Answered

I'm thinking about purchasing a Dell inspiron mini 10 / 10v for Christmas to use as an educational aid (typing up coursework, research etc). I am wondering if anybody knows the bad points about it (I already know the good ones plus the specs). I have read that the trackpad is a problem with the inbuilt buttons. I am fairly technologically inclined so I will have no problems installing a new OS (OS X perhaps? (-; ) so the only issues I will have will be the ergonomics. I have read reviews where they say the battery life isn't brilliant, is this true or have they just hammered the poor thing whilst testing? Any netbook recommendations for around the same price (250 GBP). Thanks in advance not stolen ;-)

With a netbook, is RAID 0ing the internal SSD and an SD card a good idea?

I've just gotten a netbook with an 8gb SSD, and it has a built-in SD card slot. If I put an 8gb class 10 SD card into the slot, would I be able to RAID 0 them? What would happen if I RAID 0ed them and then took the SD card out while it was on? Would it erase everything or would it just shut down? Would this work? I need 16gb of internal storage, and a 16gb SSD drive is over 70% the price of the netbook.... I'm thinking either Hackintosh or Peppermint OS or Windows XP as the operating system. Any other comments?

Computer freezes when bottom is impacted.

(I want answers, not OMG YOU'VE BEEN DEAD) When ever my Acer Aspire one d250 netbook's bottom is impacted, or dropped on my bed, it freezes. The only way to restore it is to manually restart, then it usually freezes after the splash screen. Occasionally, it will just freeze. I've tried checking the temperature of the cpu, but it comes up as normal, 110 degrees Fahrenheit. I want to crack it open and check out if anything is loose, which would make perfect sense, but I want to do a system backup first, and I'm afraid it'll freeze during that. If anyone could provide links to instructions on how to open such a computer, or a solution to the problem overall. Also, I checked my ram already, and did a full scan with avast and AVG10. -NYPA UPDATE I believe the problem to be that the hard drive is failing. As of now, my computer will randomly lock up, particularly during intensive HDD usage. When i drop my laptop, it'll lock up because the hard drive shakes and gets unbalanced, causing it to scratch. My computer will lock up randomly because it'll hit some of those scratches. This is all my reasoning. I'm not sure if it is right, but it seems to be. I'm going to do a backup and restore, just to make sure it is a hardware issue, and if it is, I'll get it checked out. Thanks for the support.  UPDATE I took it in and the problem proved to be a tiny crack in the motherboard. Lucky for me, however, my family just received a brand new desktop! WOOHOO!
