### Writing Partner

I am hoping to write with somebody on an experimentation novella of sci-fiction. English speakers are preferred, will be an informal schedule, focusing on plot and setting, symbolism is a lesser aspect, professional quality, and will self edit their work. I have a plot and idea, would like to write the novella using a tennis style of writing alternating chapters. I may self-published (Lulu.com). Working under the CC licenses. Wouldn't at all mind having a long term writing partner. Comment here or email me at 94johnjy94@gmail.com! :D

### User statistics report -- breakdown by traffic source is buggy

Here's the second bug I've found with the resurrected user statistics report (/you/stats/).  If you choose the option "By Traffic Source", the y-axis scale and detailed numbers get really weird. The first plot below shows the inclusive last-3-months data for my top five I'bles, while the second shows the same data broken down by traffic source. As you can see, the data points are all at 62 and 125 (from which I guess that the first is actually 62.5 :-). I think what's happened is that the data has gotten multiplied by 500/8 before plotting.

### Stepper motors, plotters, millers and Arduino??? How does it work!?

So I would love to have a little help here understanding how these arduino drawing, milling, and plotting contraptions work. So I know that the stepper motor is for precision, but when you hook it up to gears and stuff, how does arduino know where the stepper motor is if its like on a track or gear? Say you have a stepper motor connected to a corkscrew gear. Some corkscrew gears may be large and others may be small. How does Arduino know where the motor is on that plane?? How do you import pictures or 3D objects to Arduino to make it draw/plot/mill? Thanks!

### Make your own philips screwdriver?

If I want a flat screwdriver in an odd size, I can take a piece of metal, heat it, pound it flat on one end and file or grind to shape; something within reach of even the clumsiest blacksmith. Is there some trick I'm missing that allows similarly simple home construction of a philps-style screwdriver? Or are they part of a plot to allow only factories to make screwdrivers :-)

### DC power logging, or at least measuring (for solar panel & devices)

I have searched and searched, but I can't seem to find what I need. I want to be able to log power and plot a V-I graph and a P-t graph. I was picturing tapping into an iphone charge cable (for example) and wiring in connections. Here, I could connect the device, so that when i connect the phone via charging usb cable, current runs through the device and is measured, and voltage is read from inlet of the device to gnd. Do these exist? I'd like to also use it for a solar panel (putting a big wire loop resistor for a load to draw max power) so that I could see where the power tops out, what voltage is yielded when the max current is drawn, etc. It would be nice to be able to plot data points in excel for example. Any idea? Even if I can't LOG the data, I'd like to be able to read instant power use, not just V and A. I've seen the inline USB meters that do that. Anything helps! Thank you!

### Any video game ideas?

Hello, I am making a game and I have ran out of ideas. I has hoping that maybe some people might have ideas they would want in a game. It has a building aspect to it like minecraft, or terraria. The game Is about a merge of time lines, like Medieval knights and gulf war soldiers. I don't really want a whole new plot, but small ideas like enemies or other little parts.           Also If I use your idea, I will tell you and if its implemented in the game i might even pay you. Thanks you!

I know that the USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, UK, Australia, and New Zealand are all represented on Instructables. What other countries are represented? Are we in all seven continents? (give or take Antarctica, since only scientists and penguins live there). How many of the states of the USA are here? What's our membership by country? Is our membership only limited to earthbound beings, or do we have any astronauts or other in the ranks? Are all of our members even human? You have answers, post 'em. Just put something like "Texas, USA, here", or "Gusev Crater, Mars, here".That way we know where we're at After that, plot your location on the membership map.

### Inkless printer- Laser or Heat to engrave Paper

Hello,I am currently searching for projects that print on paper using heat, lasers or other inkless technology. The problem I ran into is that a search for burn, laser and thermal in combination with printer and paper allways brings many results that are irrelevant (laser printers, thermal transfer printers and such). What I did find is http://www.flickr.com/photos/jabella/438212343/in/set-72157600033633262/ for example. Though commercial laser solutions seem a bit "too much" and overpriced to plot a bit on paper.Does anyone here have any links to projects that use heat or other methods to print on paper?I guess it could be as simple as a plotter using a weak soldering iron ;-)

### Help with annotate function in python

I don't know how to configure it or whether the place where I have put annotate function is it the the right place or not For example: for every point in temperature, i want the value to be printed next to the point ? this is my python code import serial # import Serial Library import time #import time import numpy  # Import numpy import matplotlib.pyplot as plt #import matplotlib library from drawnow import * temperature= [] vitesse= [] charge= [] current= [] Time = [] arduinoData = serial.Serial('com5', 9600) #Creating our serial object named arduinoData plt.ion() #Tell matplotlib you want interactive mode to plot live data cnt=0 ##fig1 = plt.figure() STARTINGTIME = round(time.time(),2) def makeFig(): #Create a function that makes our desired plot     plt.subplot(2,2,1)     plt.subplot(2,2,1).annotate(str(temperature)+','+ str(Time), textcoords='offset points')     plt.title('Live Streaming Temperature Sensor Data')     plt.ylabel('Temperature C')     plt.grid(True)     plt.plot(temperature, 'ro-')     plt.subplot(2,2,2)     plt.subplot(2,2,2).annotate(str(vitesse)+','+ str(Time), textcoords='offset points')     plt.title('Live Streaming Speed Sensor Data')     plt.ylabel('Speed KM/H')     plt.grid(True)     plt.plot(vitesse, 'bo-')     plt.subplot(2,2,3)     plt.subplot(2,2,3).annotate(str(charge)+','+ str(Time), textcoords='offset points')     plt.title('Live Streaming SOC Sensor Data')     plt.ylabel('Battery Charge %')     plt.grid(True)     plt.plot(charge, 'go-')     plt.subplot(2,2,4)     plt.subplot(2,2,4).annotate(str(current)+','+ str(Time), textcoords='offset points')     plt.title('Live Streaming Current Sensor Data')     plt.ylabel('Current A')     plt.grid(True)     plt.plot(current, 'yo-') while True: # While loop that loops forever     while (arduinoData.inWaiting()==0): #Wait here until there is data         pass #do nothing     arduinoString = arduinoData.readline() #read the line of text from the serial port     dataArray = arduinoString.split(';')   #Split it into an array called dataArray     temp = float (dataArray[0])     vite = float (dataArray[1])     char = float (dataArray[2])     curr = float (dataArray[3])     temperature.append(temp)                     #Build our temperature array by appending temp readings     vitesse.append(vite)                     #Build our vitesse array by appending temp readings     charge.append(char)                     #Build our charge array by appending temp readings     current.append(curr)                     #Build our current array by appending temp readings     Time.append(round(time.time(),2) - STARTINGTIME)     drawnow(makeFig)                       #Call drawnow to update our live graph     plt.pause(0.00001)     cnt=cnt+1     if(cnt>50):         temperature.pop(0)         vitesse.pop(0)         charge.pop(0)         current.pop(0)

### Titanic: Adventure out of time

Titanic: Adventure out of time is the best computer game I have ever played. It was released in 1996 by cyberflix. The main plot begins on the titanic the night the ship hits the icberg. You have a mission with many sub missions, that inclueds finding many items and doing many other things. You mission all boils down to getting 4 items. Depending on what you get and what you dont, you alter the corse of history. The optimum ending stops WW 1 and 2 and the cold war from happening. Its a truley awesome game Anyway, the reason Im posting this forum is I would like to discuss it with other people. If you have this game or have played it, Post a comment and you will be bombarded with questions from me :-)Thanks!Wikipedia link about this game.

### Tinkerdays 2012 | DIY | prototyping an arduino wall plotter

Tinkerdays 2012 | a 60 hour prototyping event Already the second day of tinkering and we are starting to make progress on our current project, "the hemiphterograaf". We are creating a wall plotter / printer based on the kritzler schematics. Check http://tinkerdays.wordpress.com to keep yourself updated, join the conversation, tell us what you want us to improve and let us know if you think we should write an extensive tutorial. Today will be exiting. - With the use of thermoplastics (beats lego & meccano for certain applications) we will tinker the pen holder. - install the arduino blue tooth shield - update the testcode to synch the steppermotors - complete the stand on which we will secure the steppermotors (which hold the penholder via thread) - install the stepper motor pulleys (and pray they work, if it does, it deserves its own tutorial, more on this later) current state: we'll continue the day at 24/07/2012 | 12:30 GMT

### anyone know how...to build an illuminated mask by tuesday?

hello, -this is my first day in this forum(!)- well, I have a burning question and unfortunately not too much time to view the site and see so great works! I have to provide some details/experiment for a show I'm working on and i proposed some ideas that now I should prove... Basically I have to put LEDs in Masks that move and for that reason the electric systems has to be easy to maneuver and switch on/off. The batteries should be well hidden and easy to attach, inside the masks. Plus I have to create some monsters made of illuminated wire, but again how big must be the batteries plot? Now, I bought some material at a good shop and the costumers service was great, but now to put together the pieces is a bit hard... Is there any sample I could follow? I have no idea where to start from... and the only electric expert is away in holiday... Any 'easy to make' tips? thanks so much eligiaro

### Anyone interested in a tobacco fermenter 'ible?

I have been growing my own tobacco for about 5 years now and mostly have only been drying/aging it.  The homegrown tobacco always seems to have a bite to it unless it's flue cured or something. Traditionally, tobacco is dried, then fermented in large heaping piles and finally cured. As a home grower, I don't have a 1/2 acre plot growing to create such piles. On youtube, surfmonkeycoconut made a small fermenter using a styrofoam cooler & shop light. I'm taking his idea and running with it by making a fermenter out of an apartment sized fridge. I'm almost done with it but it's not too late for me to start the 'ible on it. My tobacco that has been drying for 6 months is now up & it's time to ferment.  I can't say how well it will work but I am trying to duplicate the "pile" conditions so after the "build 'ible" there would be the "using it 'ible." The plan is to be able to ferment anywhere from one leaf to 5 pounds of tobacco "Ron Popeil style" (you know, "set it! and forget it!). If anybody wants to see how, please let me know. I would be happy to make the 'ible if at least one person wants to see. Thanks.

### Video Game Ideas Wanted

A couple of friends and I are planning on making our own Video Game. I thought it would be cool to ask others for ideas. Our game is a mixed genre (we are attempting to put as many game types into one as possible, but still keeping it somewhat reasonable) sci fi game based a couple hundred years into the future. Humans have colonized mars, but their is a war between the two planetary alliances. Meanwhile there is an underground organization that controls everything going on in human society. They prepare for the return of the true martian race who left behind some ancient relics which were discovered and kept a secret. The main character is a super soldier created by the underground society. You unite the human race and fight against the aliens. We have story ideas but would like to hear ideas from other people. All suggestions are welcome. Suggestions could include, but are not limited to: Characters Events Weapons Technology Genre types Plot ideas and twists Side missions One other thing is that we were thinking that the aliens could be human based, and be like a sub-species of humans. Yes or No? Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks to all who help.

### I need help with my website forum and need to boost traffic

Hello, I want to ask about your opinions about my websites forum (not mine per say but my good friends), http://yowee.netai.net My friend, the admin, hydronator, is considering taking the site down because we dont get much traffic, and no-one other than a few of the members of the old forum which crashed, have joined the new forum. I want to know, what could be done to improve the site, and also, what would be a better way to describe the forum, other than "fun weapons designing ", since that doesnt exactly sound right, at yowee i and a few others design things that might be considered weapons, like potato launchers or pen catapults , things that you wouldnt call toy weapons. anyway, we need a positive way to describe what we do, as well as ways to attract more traffic, or else hydronator is going to shut down the site :( because he is depressed, and is being rather negative in turn of recent events. Basically what yowee is, or what it was originally was " a community of friends having fun  conspiring against society and plotting fun ways to have fun ,prank and be a nuisance" somewhat like anarchist community in many ways, except completely different, not being anarchists and all. Its hard to describe, which is one of the reason ide like to ask for help!

### What is Kelseymh up to?

CELEBRATIONS have just finished at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, for the 50th anniversary of a milestone that had nothing to do with basic physics research. In October 1958, nuclear physicist William Higinbotham created one of the world's first video games, called Tennis for Two.Officially, his goal was to liven up displays at the lab's annual visitors' day, and in that he succeeded. Hundreds of people lined up to bat a glowing spot back and forth across the video screen of a common or garden laboratory oscilloscope.Unofficially, Feedback suspects he was really just goofing off on a slow day, or waiting around with nothing to do when the lab's particle accelerator was broken, being maintained or otherwise failing to deliver the goods. Higinbotham himself said the idea came to him while reading the manual for an early computer which could plot the course of a missile or a bouncing ball on an oscilloscope screen. He then designed suitable circuits and control boxes - Stone Age versions of today's joysticks - so that two players could bat an electronic ball to each other across the screen. The game was adapted for a larger screen, but eventually forgotten until 1982, when Creative Computing magazine heard about it and thought it might be the first video game. With the invention far enough behind for him not to worry about accounting for time wasted on the government payroll, Higinbotham claimed credit for Tennis for Two.Such primitive video games are old hat now, but hundreds of physicists including our own Kelseymh are still waiting for the completion of repairs to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. What might they be inventing this time, while sitting around twiddling their thumbs?New Scientist Article.Tennis For Two Simulator (untried by your correspondent)

### Project Help - USB Charger AA batteries

So i wanted to try and pick peoples brains about this and surprisingly my web searches havent really returned anything fruitful on the subject. I have an electronic device that uses 4 AA batteries in series (6v) in a standard arrangement. Due the relative newness of the product and the way the battery compartment is shaped, its basically impossible to replace them with a 6 volt pack and its equally tiresome to use rechargeables as the battery compartment is screwed shut and this is designed to be a portable device. Ideally what I would like to do is remove a section of the case and embed a micro usb socket and setup a charging circuit to the existing battery compartment and stick some long life (lion maybe) AAs in there then just leave the compartment shut and charge via the usb port. Maybe add an led indicator for charge level, i dunno.  However, while i can solder with the best of them, the actual engineering part of laying out the necessary circuit etc is wayyyyy beyond my skills. would anyone be able to assist? Would it be easier to just scrap the battery compartment entirely and stick a battery pack inside the case that was 6v and many many many mah and hook the charge circuit up to that and its leads to the wires going to the compartment and leave it empty? theres plenty of hollow space inside the appliance itself. Second, the device itself doesnt have a "hard off" switch, it has a momentary to boot it up and a reset button. The momentary is constantly being hit in travel and turning the device on, draining the batteries. Theres no internal memory to worry about being wiped, so id love to slap a slider switch on there to kill power to the whole device unless its physically toggled, especially if im cutting a spot for a usb port as well.  Anyone willing to help consult to bring this to fruition? Ill happily give you full credit and buy all parts and what have you, and do all the solder work, just need someone to help me plot out the circuits, decide best course of action, and design a nominal breadboard to slap it together for testing.

### Nerd Pride Movie Night 2: Ghostbusters, 7:30/8:30pm 6/15 at Instructables HQ

Come to Nerd Pride Movie Night. We have ice cream. We had a great group here last time for Real Genius- who's ready for Nerd Pride Movie Night 2.0? It's a fine opportunity to meet the people behind the usernames, have some snacks, and yell at the screen when necessary. In fact, we encourage it. It's Eric's birthday, so we'll have homemade ice cream too!The movie: Come watch Ghostbusters, another nerd cult classic from 1984. Starring Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis.Plot summary: Three unemployed parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service. Who you gonna call? The Details:Starting at 7:30pm we'll serve Andrea's fabulous homemade ice cream, meet each other, and give tours of the control tower. We'll start the show at about 8:30pm, shortly after sunset. We'll provide the ice cream and toppings, some starter snacks, and fresh popcorn for the movie. Bring some movie snacks and whatever you'd like to drink.Location: Instructables, 2175 Monarch St, Alameda, CANote that the mapping programs don't get our location exactly right. We're in the control tower at the old Alameda naval air base.Directions here that work best when coupled with the map of the base. I'll see about updating them; in the meantime, PM me if you've got any questions. What is Nerd Pride Movie Night?Nerd Pride movies celebrate nerds doing their thing. These are not just movies for nerds, or movies nerds like to watch- these movies are classic examples of nerds using their science and tech skills to overcome overwhelming (and often ridiculous) odds. We'll be alternating Instructables Show & Tell with Nerd Pride Movie Night every month until we think of something even more entertaining to do. I'm toying with the idea of Bad Science Movie Night (The Core!), but we'll see how the nerd classics fare first. Suggestions are encouraged, but ultimately subject to my dictatorial whim.

OK i just went and heard the whole plot of Neill Blomkamp masterpiece the Monalisa of movies D9. he was supposed to make the halo movie but Microsoft was complaining its multimillion dollar A\$\$ off so Neill felling sad thought up remixing his movie Alive in norunburg i think its called. so here this movie is a unsuspecting antagonist "Wikus van Der Merwe" is doing a documentary on MNU moving the Aliens to district 10 but he then goes into a shack and is screwing around with items of none of his concern and sprays a crap-storm virus in his eye that mutates his arm to a alien arm and changes his DNA so he can operate alien machinery MNU being the bastards they are jacks him up and takes him to there base for dissection he then daringly grabs a scalpel and holds a doctor hostage leading up to that he escapes to district 9 where he meets Christopher who at first is reluctant to kick Wikus's A\$\$ they soon befriend each other they then steal some alien weaponry and launch a counter attack on the MNU mercs were he retrieves a fuel cell to power a ship were Chris finds out that MNU have been experimenting on his people later on Wikus finds out that it would take up to 3 years to turn him back to a human, then a Emnite shamalan twist pops up Chris wants to go home for help before coming back to cure Wikus he then gets angry and kicks poor Chris's A\$\$ and powers up a ship were his engine is shot up and he crashes he than crawls out. soon cute Christopher's son Little CJ gains control of a mechanized battle suit from inside the crashed shuttle and helps free Wikus, Wikus then enters the alien walker battle suit and defends Christopher as the mother ship uses a tractor beam to lift the shuttle on board.he shuttle docks with the mother ship, Wikus is shot in the back and the walker suit ejects him after taking critical damage. Wikus drags himself away from the leader of the mercenaries, but is unavoidably caught. Just before the trigger is pulled, four aliens burst out of the surrounding slums and rips apart Wikus's attackers. The film concludes with another series of interviews and news broadcasts, showing the humans view on the events that unfolded. An interview with Wikus' wife reveals a small metal rose was left on her doorstep (one of Wikus' trademarks, he strongly believed a gift is worth more if it was made personally). She concludes it couldn't possibly be Wikus, no one has heard from him since he was last seen crawling from the mangled battle suit. An alien is then seen standing in a junk yard inside District 9 fashioning a small metal rose out of scrap metal, implying that Wikus is alive, his transformation from human to alien is complete, and is still awaiting Christopher's promised return. just tell me what you think about the ending

### The music has brought to me a wonderful story? Give me your opinion

Ok, so while trying to get to sleep, about an hour ago, I decided to listen to "For Crying out Loud" by Meatloaf. I tried to daynightdream (Dreaming while awake at night) me singing the song.... the music has unleashed a story. I tried to keep the story going. I then listened to "Hallelujah" by Paramore, then "No Suprise" by Chris Daughtry. Here is the story: Plot: A man and his band have a dream of becomming big. The man is the singer. He meets a girl, who helps his band out, and is a guest singer with the man.The man feels this may be the perfect girl for him, until a terrible accident happens. Doctors struggle to keep the girl alive, but she ends up dying. The man, being so depressed, departs from his band until he finds life. He starts touring solo around his hometown. He dedicates a performance of a cover of the song "For Crying out Loud" by Meatloaf to the girl. At the end, he breaks down and curls in a ball in the back of the stage. Being so depressed, he doesn't realize that he falls asleep. He wakes up a few hours later. He finally leaves the empty theater, to go to the girls house. It is empty, except for her dog. He feeds the dog. He thens becomes curious, and reads the girls diary. The last entry of the day said "I am not sure why, but something doesn't feel right. If anything happens to me, let (the mans name) know, I love him". The man can't help but to be sad, with a touch of happiness. He places the diary back in her drawer, and goes back to the garage where his band practiced. He soon finds out that the band had found a new singer, and has ditched him... to already have a platinum record released. Will the man find hope to find his dream? Please tell me what you think. Tell me if you think I should try to see if maybe I can write it, then possibly get it published? I really want your opinion. Okay, so I just wrote my first chapter. Here it is: "Hey. Gimmie that drumstick over there. I lost my other one," "Well, you know that being destroyed will leave a void" "Shuddup with your logic, Brian. Wait... destroyed...void. Write that down for a song!" No one knew the drummers name. They just called him "Animal". The lead guitarist is Brian. The rythm guitarists name was Chad. But most importantly, the singers name was Damian. Damian Blue. Everyone knew his name. He was the popular one of the town. "Destroy... and... void.... Got it!" Brian said in a monotone voice. "Killer! Okay, lets practice our song Lost" So they did. They played. This is the bands most enjoyed song. Everyone loved it. The town, the citizens, the kids, and even the mayor showed up at a concert. These are the people, this is the life, this is the band "Pessimist or Optimist?"
