Suggestions for making instructables better Answered

Instructables.com is an awesome site, but its still young and could still use some improvements. Post your ideas here Mine: -Add something showing progress while you upload photos. -Make the new editor default

Definatley a TOOLBAR now that would be cool!

What would you have on the toolbar?

IDK a search bar, favorite instructables,a "create" button, etc..

option to write instructables as .txt files with tags and then upload a zip of all txts and images that make the instructable. then the site processes the txts to a real instructable with the aid of the tags that'd be like offline editor but you can use whatever editor you want

have less smart wysiwyg. it breaks in some browsers just cause they are not firefox or dont support some minor feaure make instructables work better without flash : slideshows can be made in normal web pages like any web gallery. videos can be made downloadable in a format that opens without flash player (like mp4 flv etc) or be embedded in a format other than flash when submitting a video instructable - add option to embed directly mp4 avi and the like from an external location and not only give choice of sites that convert it to flash (i for example dont use flash / gnash / etc. they are just so bloated ! i dont want to have them make my browser crawl)

-old rating system -online now indicator -a real instructables chatroom, not where you can impersonate -instructables for iphone *looking down* actually, everything skate6566 says

Yea, I agree on the old rating system thing, It was in a way unique and much better... And the Instructables chatroom is a great idea, a real one!!!

- nah - what would that do? - yes... I was impersonated - good idea

How do you even know what the old rating system is?

Guy from 7up described it in another topic...

Online now indicator: I was thinking of integrating that in with the ratings script. I know they sound so dissimilar, but it would be pretty damn easy to integrate. As for the instructables chatroom, I had an idea to write an IRC bot to handle that... but the IRC chatroom never caught on... *angry glare*

The IRC chatroom didn't catch on because few people knew about it, and the ones that did didn't want to have to have a seperate program just for chatting. Meebo was good because you can use it in FF or IE. It also works when your at school or library and can't install programs

Well then, you can embed it and get rid of meebo. Don't blame me, I'm not staff.

  • Under the additional profile picture images, make it javscript changing, so when you click on one it will change the main one temporarily, instead of opening a browser window. ;-)
  • Keep the new ratings, but add "zero stars".
  • "Online now" (but with an option to look offline?)
  • Membership directory
  • Easier-to-find statistics (total ibles, total members etc)
  • be able to remove ratings

I think that there should be a new ratings system that is more aparent and easier to notice because I always forget to rate because I'm focused on the Instructable not the side of the screen. The old one was better.

Also if you could make friends like some forums do...

Fix the editor... Allow you to forum posts Completely remove forum posts

You can both delete forum topics and edit them.

I meant more like these posts, which you can't edit, and when you delete, it looks like that \/

Pretty much... ***feel stupid now***

Lol! I agree, we need to be able to edit comments.

Have you seen Wanye's World? (I know it's off topic)

Most of the things mentioned, and timestamps in the chat room.

Honestly the majority of this stuff is a case of someone writing a few scripts, now everyone's going to point towards zach but he does a lot, maybe a scripts 'ible would be easier than pandering to the demands of the many...

My additions would be:

  • An Image for the book contest in the banner above entries, probably an oversight...
  • The problem with comments in the middle of writing being hidden behind ads or anything else in the right hand bar, try replying to one that's got a few replies already...
  • Some form of map feature (optional, the user created ones never got far)

:-D
The 2nd one is really the only one I'd do. But yeah, I can look into doing some of this stuff. I'll probably throw them into the ratings script, since its uber-easy to upgrade. (Everyone should get & use that script!)

Why can't you use it? Or just compile it yourself?!

I do use it, just saying it'd be nice is all. Couldn't you find a way of generating each individual script and compiling it server-side, so people download it as an extension?

Do you really? Mind you, I have access to all the data I get from this, and you aint on the list ;P

The list? What list? The hit list? Schindler's list? The grocery list?

You sent me a PM inviting me in, I didn't sign up with my username.
