Vacuum pump voltage? Answered

Today I was dumpster diving and i found an old vacuum so i decided to take the pump out but i made the mistake of not checking what voltage the vacuum runs on, because it also had a spinning component at the mouth of the vacuum. I think the pump works fine because i noticed that tube connecting the mouth of the vacuum and the pump was broke. Is there anyway to find out what voltage it runs on? would standard 120 be ok?
The markings on it say 81 b-9 ECP 6500-240 HPU+ 60hz HD10 120 vac 07:07
does that mean it will work off a standard 120 outlet?

update: What I am going to do with this motor has been decided. I will be attaching it to the back wheel of my bike with a car battery, i will install some type of switch on the handlebar or add something like a dimmer switch, this would allow me to have the motor on if i want, and i can adjust the speed. Please help fine tune this idea.

theres a problem with that: the motors ac, the battery's dc. you need an inverter to run that motor if its inductive

Ok, well that can be done because i was considering doing this to it, and modding it so that i could have my front wheelup front and i would size down the cart.. Another issues that i saw is that if the motor goes fast the pedals would too, is there anyway to run the motor and not have the pedals turning?

yes but no. you need at 120VAC to 12VAC adapter you can run in reverse, or a real adapter

So, i took a powerchord, and split the ends and touched them to the place where the wires were on the motor, there was a giant spark and the motor did start to move very fast until i pulled back as soon as it sparked, and i smelled burning. is this something i sould be worried about?

. The thing to be worried about is doing it unsafely. . As you've already figured out, these are fairly high torque motors that like to spin around if they are not bolted down. For every action, there is an equal ..... . Especially when working with high voltage (anything over 12-15VDC, 9-12VAC can make me hurt myself) or high current capacity sources (eg, the wall socket or the new high-tech batteries), make sure all your connection are secure and insulated. Use "wire-nuts" (available at most department/hardware stores) at the very least. And a little bit of electrical tape over the wire-nut and wires is not overkill.

. PS: The smell is probably from the arcing. Unless you saw smoke coming from the motor, you should be OK.

with 15 amps =)

which is 1800 watts

roughly equal to the power of a lawnmower...

yes girls, when you blow dry your hair your pretty much putting a 2.5 horsepower lawnmower engine to your head

. Wow! Is that right? I never thought of it in terms of HP. I've dealt with HP or W, but never both at the same time. . Let's see ... if it bolt 40 blow-dryers to the back of my car ... click, click click ... at 2.5HP each ... click,click,click,click ... that's an extra 100HP! heehee

I know what you mean. . . I have a fully functional vacuum cleaner motor, with switches and control board attached and am not completely convinced of exactly what I should do with mine either. A vacuum cleaner motor IS supposed to be able to draw enough vacuum to do things like (plastics) vacuum forming, vacuum bagging for composites, and stuff like that. Or you could go into the vacuum repair business; I recently spent quite a few $$$ replacing the motor in the vacuum that goes with my PCB router. :-( As a blower, it might be about right to get a good-sized pulse-get motor going...

I don't want this to sound like it is going to sound, I am not making fun or anything, but I just want to be sure....you meant a pulse-jet motor, right ? I can't find anything on a pulse-get motor (but I could be ignorant of them...)

I know the feeling....the two words I have the most trouble with are lose and loose (they LOOK like they should be pronounced in the opposite way that they are *sigh* at least, I think I have that right....I normally use the wrong one howver).

. Keep in mind that pumps blow as well as they suck. You can use it for a pressurized air source. It won't be high pressure, but you ought to have more than enough flow for most DIY projects.

BTW, Vacuum cleaner motors aren't really "vacuum pumps" - they specialize in moving large volumes of air rather than creating a pressure differential...

. I think I see what you are saying - vacuum cleaners don't make good vacuum pumps - but w/o deltaP, there is no flow. . The reason vacuum cleaners make poor vacuum pumps is because they are centrifugal pumps. Most vacuum pumps are positive-displacement.

if it says 120 on the side, its probably a standard 110/120 volt motor. find a good cord though, as i have no clue what amperage it will pull

. That looks like a 110/220V motor to me, but I'm no expert. If you can provide a better picture of the markings in the third pic (or transcribe them), I bet somebody here can give you the right answer.
