I have a a AOS Safety respirator with P100 cartrideges and i think it is time to replace the cartridges, i have used it for hobbies when airbrushing, lathe working, fiberglass sanding, and enamel spray painting. How do i tell when the cartridges need to be replaced? Also i was wondering, would it be possible to convert it to a forced air respirator, by taking an old pair of cartridges and cutting out all the filters and stuff and attaching to air hoses, one to each cartridge and using dryer duct alluminum tape to make it air tight. Then attaching some type of fan to it, or attach it to the houses a/c vent? Would this work?

Hi, im looking for some help with a physics/engineering type problem. Im looking for the most effective method of tranfering a mechanical force from one direction to another. For example if i had a 1" horizontal rod struck on its east face which then begins to travel westward on a fixed horizontal track, im looking for a method of transfering the energy (not sure if thats the right word) in the opposite direction. A few important factors are that the rod which is struck does need to travel around 4 inches on the fixed rail, and any vertical movement needs to be kept to a minimum. Below is one of my early ideas, serves little pupose as the mechinism is too large but gives you the jist of what im talking about.

I'm looking to make a "floating" model by insetting NdFeB rare-earth magnets with same poles facing so they repel. Now, magnet selling places specify the "pull" a magnet might have, say 1.2kg. What I would like to know is if the repel is equal in magnitude as the pull if two similar magnets are placed with same poles facing, is the force exerted 1.2kg and so I could float 1.2kg of stuff? Also, does stacking magnets double the attractive or repelling force, i.e. do two 1.2kg magnets stuck together lift 2.4kg of stuff, negating the small difference in distance of one magnet from the object? Is there a way to calculate the distance between two opposing magnets with a force applied. Does it follow the inverse cube rule? And if the stacking does work, do I also need an equal number of magnets on the other side for repelling, i.e. a stack of two 1.2kg magnets repels 2.4kg with one 1.2kg on the other side, or not? Does the magnet on the other side have to be the same force? Lots of questions but hoping someone can shed some light on this as I've not been able to find anything about it :-(

The problem is that almost no one has enough room inside to shoot a knex gun unless it's a total peice of ....you get the point. But, by going outside there are many other vaiables that effect how far a gun can shoot (eg. Wind direction/ speed, trees and other obstruction, etc.) Also power as in "can shoot through can" or "through 3 sheets of hard cardboard" can also be misconstrude in the way that range from the can is a main factor, point blank range is not always the most powerful range, often 1-3 inches away has exponentially higher power. What needs to happen is a tool be built (out of K'nex, what else?) that is not only easy to use but impossible to mess up, it should be able to give 100% accurate reading for all types of guns from the weakest to the most powerful. Also in terms of different types of ammo, rod size shouldn't matter( thats what she said) the only thing that should matter in terms of ammo is whether it is deer slug, rod, sligshot/ catapult rod(a rod with something the can grab the elastic), or other and specify what that is.Range is all to often streched beyond reality by saying it can shoot 200 yards, when really it might be able to shoot 50 yards tops when pointed strait but 200 yards if it is pointed strait at the sky. We need to bulid a target that you shoot from maybe 5 feet away and something mesures force, be it cardboard, or cans, or plywood, maybe even something that leaves a dent in it and you can mesure the depth of the dent to tell you how much force (eg. 1/2"=1, 1"=2, 1 1/2"=3, etc.)Also one last idea if you would prefer to stick to range outside, is that you divide the range in feet, by the number of cardboard sheets(or other medium)the gun can shoot trough at point blank range (say it shoots 63 feet, and through 4 sheets of thick, corrugated cardboard the equation would be F= 63/4= 15.75, so your force rating would be 15.75)These are only some ideas to get all of you thinking about a standard in K'nex gun power.-TheXenk

Is it possible in the technological day and age to force a computer controlled automatic transmission to start in a higher gear like second. About 90% of people will never need this, however out on the farm in a big diesel truck with 800lbs of torque you need it. By starting in a higher gear it allows us to get through snow much better and this becomes extremely difficult with an automatic transmission. Sure we can set the highest gear it will go into, but we can't lug through the snow and mud like we would like to. Do any of you know of a chip out there already, or one you can make that will let you pick and chose your lowest gear.

Hi,I am trying to figure out maximum linear force I can produce with an electric motor through use of lead screw and nut. I have come up with an equation which seems correct but resulting forces are way higher than my intuition believes is correct.I tackled the problem from the perspective of energies:F' * p = M/r * 2*π*rlinear force * thread pitch = torque / radius [M/r = force at radius] * circumference of lead screwF = 2*π*M/p * (1-k) //k stands for coefficient of friction between lead screw and nut)Radius falls out of equation, which seems fine as force is provided by torque, which is radius agnostic. I used a 7€ stepper for source of torque which can provide 0.42 Nm of torque and a lead screw with 8 mm pitch and 4 mm radius, I assumed 15% losses. My equation tells me that such system can provide 280 N of force, which seems wayyy too much for a cheap motor.I have attached a python code that calculates linear force in case it helpsCan someone tell me if my equation is either correct or flawed?

I am repairing broken locking mechanism in the door of a dishwasher. Of course there will be a bit of force involved when pressing the handle and the dishwasher will heat the water which can melt the glue. What's your opinion? Should i use it??

I am hoping to create a circuit that will variably control the speed of a motor through pressure. If I were to wire up one of these http://www.adafruit.com/products/1075 , simply as the switch between a small motor and a power source around 5v, would it work to simply turn the motor off at rest and vary the speed with pressure? Is there a way to use this resistor as a "switch" without using an Arduino or other micro controller? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I am new to posting questions in forums so please forgive me if I break any rules. I am trying to build a simple parallel circuit to light up 24 LED's with a simple battery pack with 2 AA batteries. I would the lights to come on when a baby touches 1 or more of the 4 Force Resistive Sensors that I will be using. I would appreciate any guidance with building this circuit, any any schematics that would help. I have limited electrical/electronic knowledge. Thanks for your help guys. I am a quadriplegic and paralysed from the shoulders down. I am working on a project to allow me to control a go kart. I have limited use of my arms which should allow me to control the steering but I am trying to get another degree of freedom to control acceleration and/or braking One of the ideas is to use a piezoelectric type force transducer in the mouth to control and acceleration via an arduino or similar. The transducer would detect bite force and it would be converted into control signals for the throttle and/or brake. It would be embedded in a gumshield and it would be acceptable to have a cable coming from the front of it to the control System. I am wondering has anyone worked on such a project and could anyone point me in the right direction please. The gumshield may end up looking something like the image here.

As reported in Physics World today, a team of Swiss and Dutch physicists have developed a novel tip for an atomic force microscope (AFM) using a single carbon monoxide molecule. The tip is stable enough to image individual atoms and bonds within molecules.The first image below is from the group's AFM of a single pentacene (C22H14) molecule on a copper (Cu(111)) substrate. The second picture shows the conventional chemical structure diagram (the vertices are carbon, and one hydrogen hangs off of each exterior corner), and the third is a "ball" model, with carbon atoms in black and hydrogen in white. As discussed in the article, the whole molecule is just 1.4 nm long, with a spacing of 0.14 nm between adjacent carbon atoms.The paper is out in today's Science, but it's pay-per-view.

Hello! I am making a prototype of a force sensitive resistor, and i am using, to old 97%kobber coins, metal sheet and a tiny piece of conductive foam that i got from a tv-repair shop. The setup is not very good, but its a start, and i am planning the next move for better results... Now... I want some decent understanding of how the readings work, and why I get these results.. First test, are written with black, and and as you can see it, has the same amount of space between 0-1kg and 1-2kg, but 2-3 and 3-4 changes to a very small space? Why is that? Second question is, that i have used the x10, to read larger forces. 0-2,5kg and 2,5-5kg has same amount of space. Will the space decrease too, when getting further up the scale too? - I know the conductive foam has its limits too, but just to be clear of my readings. Thanks in advance! I hope you can see the readings on the picture..!

Hi, I'm helping a team of students make a brake-assist device for a two-wheeled walker. We were wondering if there are mechanical brakes out there that apply a force proportional to the speed. A circular damper, is how we would describe it, I think. Or something like a gas shock (the things on screen doors and car trunks) but with a circular motion rather than a linear stroke. Anyone have any ideas? Anything that's commercially available, small, and somewhat inexpensive is fair game. Bonus points for things that can be made by hand.. Thanks!

I am building a camera rig, and I would like to be able to accomplish very fluid movements with it. I have seen all kinds of existing camera rigs, but they all seem relatively static in one way or another. Simple bi-directional movement is alright, but something capable of vertical, horizontal and rotational movement would be preferable. If you push downwards, the camera moves upwards - that kind of thing. Even a material that is semi-flexible would work, as a rod to attach the camera to that would provide some sort of resistance, and a position to snap back to. I'm not looking for the whole design, just a starting point if anyone has any ideas about something that already exists that sounds like what I'm saying.

Hey guy! Sharir1701 here and I just want to start off by saying that I'm not back into Knex warfare, but I have something to show you. About a year and a half ago, I posted this forum topic. There I explained why, in my opinion, just adding more rubber bands to a gun will not actually produce an overall better gun (past a certain, low point). I'm not getting back into that discussion, but I simply wanted to share something regarding that. Don't ask me how or why (I don't know, myself), but a few days ago I suddenly remembered that old assumption I made. Being a perfectionist, I hate leaving things unfinished or unexplained (particularly math and physics related inquiries). Back when I posted that topic, I had little to no formal Physics knowledge, and the beginnings of an understanding in mathematics. Now, I have a much broader understanding, much more knowledge, and an ability to explain and evaluate what I once couldn't. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, back then, I didn't have the tools to prove my claims. I firmly believed in them, but I couldn't confirm them. It's nothing complicated, but, like I said, just something I'd like to share. I also want to point out that, although I personally don't enjoy spending days upon days perfecting a little plastic mechanism for firing (mostly) non-aerodynamic plastic projectiles, anymore, there still is a warm spot in my heart for the craft I once loved. More to the point - this is a small article just showing something I did in a few minutes the other day, that helps me to better understand how a Knex gun works. I hope that in writing this, more people that are still building guns, will think about more accurately calculating certain things about their guns to help improve their performance and hopefully produce more efficient guns. The final note I have is that I'm about to show you equations, all of which can be plugged with real, measurable numbers, to calculate to a high degree of accuracy, the forces at play. This means you can actually calculate the most efficient layout for a gun, and also that in designing your next, you will be able to use these equations, and many others, to find optimal solutions to your problems. So, what's all this fuss about? Well, basically, I just proved with a few, painfully easy equations that my conjecture about the forces in a gun, working on the pin, is true. I'll just get to it: First, Hooke's Law states that the force necessary to change the length of a spring or a (tense) rubber band is F=K*dX, where F is the force, dX is the distance you want to change, and K is a constant number, that each rubber band (or spring) has. You can quite easily measure both of these. For rubber bands connected parallel to each other (assuming they are the same type of rubber band, which ever is your chosen standard), this equation becomes F=K*dX*N, where N is the number of rubber bands used. dX and K are both constant in the regards of the pull of a pin on a standard Knex pin gun. Therefor, the amount of force required to cock a pin (pull it back to it's full length) is linearly correlated to the number of bands you put on your gun. Next, if we examine Newton's equation of work and energy, W=dE=F*dX, where W is the work, dE is the change in energy in your system (input from an external force, i.e. your hand), F is the force applied along a length of movement, and dX is that length. Let us define the base position of the pin (not cocked, minimum tension on the rubber bands, fully in the barrel, etc.) as having 0 energy. This then means that the work applied to the pin by cocking it is equal to all the potential energy it has. From this, plugging in the force, we get Ep=K*(dX)^2*N. Let us assume a perfect world, where we neglect the effects of friction and air resistance, and assume all the momentum of the pin is transferred into the bullet as it fires (I will briefly mention in the end, why everything we're neglecting here just strengthens my claim in reality, but let's continue for now). After being released (in other words, shot), the maximum velocity the pin reaches right before the end of it's journey can be found using the equation for kinetic energy Ek=1/2*M*(Vmax)^2, using the fact that (again, neglecting energy wasted as heat due to friction) the energy is conserved, as no external force is working on the system, which then means that Ep,start=Ek,end => K*(dX)^2*N=1/2*M*(Vmax)^2 => Vmax = sqrt(2*K*(dX)^2/M) * sqrt(N). The first sqrt term in the final equation is all one big constant (again, K is the ratio associated with the rubber band, dX is the distance the pin travels, and M is the mass of the pin), meaning we can conclude that (C for constant) Vmax=C*sqrt(N). Finally, force applied by a moving, massive object can be calculated using Newton's second law, F=dP/dT (P is the pin's momentum, T is the time it takes for the pin to go from velocity Vmax to 0, transferring all it's energy into the gun and the bullet, but as I said, let us assume all of it goes into the bullet), or F=M*dV/dT (M, mass of the pin, dV is the difference in velocity, Vmax-0, which is simply Vmax. This is because P=M*V, which means dP=M*dV, ignoring relativity). So, F=M*C/dT*sqrt(N). The time varies slightly, but insignificantly, so let us assume it is a constant. So that's it. The force exerted by the pin on the bullet is some constant (calculatable, as mentioned and as shown), times the sqrt of N, the number of rubber bands on the gun. So there you go. Just a little something I did out of the blue the other day and thought I would share a proof of my conjecture from what feels like eons ago. I hope you enjoyed. Finally, I would like to tell you guys, perhaps as a little tease, since I'm not sure if I will ever upload it, but I have made 1 more gun after I stopped posting. I have already slightly teased about it in my user info. I guess I'll tell you guys what it is if I'm already posting something here again :) Possibly my most enjoyable, most well received, and quite innovative gun of all time? The REMPAR-2. I built the REMPAR-3 (I was also going to call it S5 when I thought about posting it). In a brief summary, it's a pump action, chambering (or bolt action as I and many others falsely used to call it), magazine fed rifle, that's only 5 layers thick all over, except one tiny area where it's 8 layers thick (1.5 extra on either side), as a reinforcement, not necessary if you use less rubber bands. Oh, actually, there's another small necessary area where it's 7 layers thick, but it's tiny and doesn't make the gun look bulky at all, and who cares. Plus, the one is around the pump, which looks quite natural, and the other is "disguised" as a detachable sight (not really detachable) that also looks fine. It also looked fairly good for a gun that I made, it used (if I remember correctly) a grand total of 0 broken pieces, which is a big accomplishment for me (the mag has some broken white rods, but fuck off), and it worked flawlessly, reaching ranges over 80ft and being able to go at 2-4 rounds per second, depending on your skill level with it. In other words, I could shoot 4rps; My girlfriend, with no experience or practice, could do 2rps, which says something about the gun's comfortability and ease of use in my opinion. It shot blue rods up to an accuracy of about 5x5cm (2x2in) over 30ft, which is amazing for a Knex gun, and it was truly super comfortable. It wasn't even long at all, which is saying a lot, looking at some other people's attempts at 5-wide pump actions (I may also be guilty of an attempt several years ago). Being quite short and only 5 wide, it is also quite light. I'm sorry, I just really liked this gun, I think it was truly my best creation ever (of course, the S3 is by far the most innovative gun I've made, but it's mostly a concept gun, not meant for real effectiveness). I may post it in the future, but I'll make no promises. I suppose I won't leave you guys completely hanging and take a picture of it. Oh yes, there's also a neat, fun little thing I did, originally because I saw no other option, but then I actually really loved it. I'm talking about the mag-lock. It locks automatically (there's a band on it, but it ripped a long time ago, so...) and the mag cannot fall out. Then you pull on it with your middle finger, similar to a trigger, and the mag just drops right out. Love it :)

Today, I had a clear out of the workshop (Okay, shed) and found this peculiar tool. It's being lingering around for years now, and I've never been able to figure out exactly what it is and where it came from. The orange thing pushes down and locks, and when it is at the bottom a tiny metal rod appears and dissapears again at the end of the white nozzle. It holds in place until you press the orange button, at which point it fires the orange thing out at a fairly high speed, and it stops when it reaches the end of the blue channel. If you cover over the nozzle, it fires very slowly, so it probably sucks air from there. Does anybody know what this tool is?
