Flag request: "other"

I'm sure this has been suggested elsewhere, but nothing came of it, either way, and it has come up again in a conversation with another member by PM. Currently, Instructables can be flagged for three reasons - "inappropriate", "incomplete" or "spam". Whilst they cover most eventualities, I would like to propose a fourth flag option: "other". Of course, "other" is rather vague, so its use would require details - clicking it would open a comment or message box to allow a brief description of the reason for the flag, whether it is the original source of a project that has been ripped off from elsewhere, or a concern regarding the safety or legality of a posting. I don't know coding, so I don't know if such a system is possible with this site. If it isn't, then can I suggest that a fourth flag option be added called "Legal issues", or some other catch-all phrase that covers issues of intellectual ownership and site liability.

What in the world is this? Answered

I found a metal object. It is cone shaped with a handle.  The cone has something inside that you can turn (from the top) to scrap around the inside.  Measurements of the cone is about 3 inches across bottom and 3 inches tall.  The handle is about 4 inches in length. If you turn the part that looks like a G it scraps the inside. Thanks to anyone smart enough to know. DD

JonnyBGood's Other Hobby

Well this may seem out of place in the K'nex forum, but since I am a member of the group I think this still applies. For the last couple of months I've been pretty inactive as far as my K'nex building has been concerned but as you can probably see from the pictures my time was being completely consumed by my Nerf hobby. Let me also state this while I'm at it.... No this does not mean I've stopped K'nex building, I've just been sidetracked for awhile. My reasoning for moving to Nerf is mainly because of a resolve I made at New Years to start tinkering with electronics, and of course I wanted to keep shooting projectiles so Nerf was perfect. It also allowed me to participate in more wars, again I love K'nex and I look forward to our once a year K'nex war, but one isn't quite enough for me.  Nerf also gave me one other edge that I wasn't getting with K'nex, and that was a marketable product. Kids are willing to pay on average (based on me stalking ebay for a month) 40-80$ depending on gun and paint job quality. So I have a possible source of income custom painting Nerf guns.  When should I expect another K'nex ible'? Well I have one last Nerf build I really want to do ( rapidstrike uzi ) and after that I will refocus of getting some war guns together for the K'nex war this year.    So in summary, that has been what I've been up too. If you like any of my work and would like to make an offer I will gladly consider anything reasonable, so send me a PM. I plan on eventually selling "Vanguard" themed white Strongarm's because I can paint those relatively quickly. The Rayven Roughcut integration ( Mine is called the Universal Remote) is my piece de resistance right now and I'm insanely happy with how it's going. If you know a friend that may be interested in my work, I'd appreciate any referral. Also note that I'm not doing any commissions.... yet. I'm kind of addicted to the art of making a well painted and functioning Nerf gun right now.  Thanks for reading, more K'nex projects coming soon!     JonnyBGood

Experience Other Dimensions

Has anyone ever experienced the fourth dimension. Sure this is a topic for science fiction novels, new age conspiracy theories and the new Indiana Jones movie. But dimensions past our own experience are having a big impact in theoretical physics. Flat Land and it's unofficial sequel Flatterland are good books to get a mathematical yet whimsical look into alternative dimensions. The Tesseract from A Wrinkle in Time was a hyper cube as well.So we go from 0D (a point) to 1D (a line) to 2D (planes) to 3D (solid objects) and then what happens when you pull that plane into an unseen dimension? Well, use your imagination and watch this video: 6d-Hypercube from Tobby Lang on Vimeo. Why Bother With 4D?Yours_BG*(Corrected, thanks n8mansays)

Instructibles not appearing and other

Hi, its pucksurfer, lately I've had a couple of instructibles that have not appeared in the recent section. I publish them and then they only appear in my profile page but not in the recent section. My last one didn't even after I waited like 6 hours and I knew it was published because I had 3 views when I looked at from my profile. I cant even search it. I think that I had the same problem with my most popular car manufacturer instructible. If you could it would be great to fix that, or tell me how to fix it. I've been jointly using the app on my ipod 4 which has iOS 6.1.6 and my acer chromebook w/ chrome OS 34.0.1847.134 and typing and adding about half the pics from the chromebook and about half of the pics and a little bit of typing on my ipod. I've had this glitch on now two or three instructibes. Also, I tried emailing the support team at support@instructibles.com (which I found on the contacts page) from my gmail account but it wouldn't go through and google sent me an email that said that the message failed permanently and that google tried to deliver the message but it was rejected by the domain instructibles.com.  I've also found that sometimes on the website when I search something in the search bar on the top then it will just direct me to the featured page and then I have to re-search that and then it will go to the right search page. Thanks, Pucksurfer

Getting sponsorship?

Hello everyone, I am currently by the end of my studies and I am also working as part-time.  Now I applied to be a volunteer for the Olympics and Paralympics for 2016 in RIO and have been selected for both which I am really excited for, but the only problem is that to be able to go over there It is very costly as I live on the other side of the world and I don't have enough funds and time is very limited to acquire those as well.   So what I need is to find a way so that I can get sponsored for my air tickets and take care of my accommodation.  Here are the things that I have been thinking and trying to do as well. First I looked for a job and I got it but the problem is that the pay isn't enough so that I can get the required amount to cover all my expenses.  I cannot get another job as I need to complete my studies before June so time isn't in my favour again.  However I think that I can work freelance online for short jobs such as 1 day to 1 month and If I can get as many as possible It should help.  SInce those won't be enough I need to look for sponsors but I do not know where to look for and how to do it and I was also thinking of getting a job in the US or even south america so as to be able to stay and work there for a while after the event so that I can take care of myself and explore at the same time before returning to my home country.   Any help. I really appreciate it.

Operational Amplifier input voltage affects other input?

Hello, I have created a simple circuit where 2 10k resistors make a voltage divider. Supply voltage is 12.5V and if I measure in between the 2 resistors, I'm getting 6.3V. Great! Now I connect that 6.3V to the +input of an OpAmp. Result: the value is still 6.3V. Great! (The OpAmp is also fed with 12.5V) Now I connect the -input of the OpAmp to the supply voltage (12.5V). The voltage in between both resistors suddenly changes from 6.3V to 10.1V. NOT Great! Now I connect the -input of the OpAmp to ground (0V). The voltage in between both resistors changes from 6.3V to 2.4V. ?! The output of the OpAmp is not connected to anything. I thought that OpAmp inputs, in theory, have infinite resistance? The datasheet of this OpAmp (LT1253) sais the input resistance should be 10Mohm I also tested this same thing with the LT1497 and the results are the same. When the -input of the  OpAmp was connected to 12.5V, I measured the current going into that pin, 39mA!! (Only measured on the LT1253) What's the problem here? Are both OpAmps broken? Or is there something about the way OpAmps work, that I clearly don't understand?

(SOLVED) Break circuit = Make circuit?

Basically, what I want to do is activate something when there is no current somewhere else. Examples of uses of this would include turning an LED on when there is no light on an LDR and turning it off when there is light, rather than the other way around, along with turning an LED on when a circuit is broken by opening a door. Apologies if I have not been clear enough. Is this possible?  EDIT: Thanks to NachoMahma, I have it set up with a transistor. I will post a schematic if anyone is interested.

Adding Other Materials to the Mix

Over the past couple of years, I've evolved from being totally captivated by my 3D printer, making everything I could think of out of the three plastics I can print with, ABS, PLA and Nylon, to having the Replicator, sitting in my shop and becoming "another tool".  A tool that stands in as an "employee", who can make things while I do other things. Along with doing a pretty good job of making my designs, I've experimented with stepping in, during the print, adding components made of other materials, such as cloth, metal and other plastics.  I've successfully made pulls on tie bags, an electric push button, aluminum mounts for my project car and spring clips to hang my wife's potato chip and popcorn bags in the kitchen. Has anyone else been able to use their printer to make items, not 100% plastic?

Other media besides plastic?

So I recently started looking into some of the 3d printing stuff as a way to make a number of laboratory items that are not easily had other ways.  While 3D printing seems really promising, i'm noticing there's not alot of work being done on non-plastics. Are there resources out there for 3D printer enthusiasts who want to use metal or ceramics in there creation?  Off the top of my head, i can think of a few ways that they could be encorporated into an existing 3d printer (metal and ceramic powders in a wax binder that can zapped with a laser to fuze it into place), but I'm only just barely getting into this and i'm really not looking to reinvent the wheel simply because i didn't know that it's already been done.  If plastic went entirely by the wayside, pieces that could be cured in a conventional oven could be printed, but fully cured, ready to go products are sorta the point of a 3d printer.

Other uses for Second Life?

In an instructable I recently published (How to pick up women online), I have discussed how to make use of Second Life in order to beat Approach Anxiety, to perfect some pickup techniques, and to improve conversation. I know of a few second life players who have made use of the game in order to overcome their fears, insecurities and phobias, and to widen their horizons. It seems to me 3D virtual worlds offer a tremendous opportunity to acquire real life skills (for instance I also know people who have used second life to perfect a language). I was wondering if anyone could think of similar uses for second life, and ideas on how to implement them.

resin or other material for sink?

I'd like to try making my own bathroom sink, and I'm wondering what sort of material(s) would resist cracking / chipping / discoloration, and preferably not be poisonous.   My first thought was some sort of cast resin.  Googling "cast resin sinks" will turn up a ton of cool looking products.  Bonus is being able to light it up from the inside.  I'm not sure what sort of resin is used for those products, though. I also considered the "inverse":  sculpting a shape out of wood etc., then layering it with something like Aquaresin with fiberglass reinforcement, and polishing.  Might not be a tough enough surface, but perhaps could be sealed with an epoxy / urethane / what have you. I'm not sure that going fired clay will give me the modern / futuristic look I'm going for... Unless there's a way to have someone apply a glossy ceramic coating to a piece that you bring in. Concrete was considered and discarded - mostly for aesthetic reasons, but also weight.  Really, resin seems the easiest route - but still looking for input from any materials experts out there.

Site messages and other changes

I've just pushed the first significant release after a couple engineering vacations.  Rested and refreshed, I offer you these updates: The confirmation/error messages that some processes give are now 'modal', meaning that instead of an easy-to-miss orange bar at the bottom of the page, they are now a box in the middle, with a button to remove them.  We found that many users did not see the bar at the bottom and were confused about whether the site did what they wanted, or why it apparently did not.  We've done some work on removing confirmations that are common enough that it would be annoying to have to close them all the time, but if we've missed any of those please don't hesitate to let us know. We've reluctantly implemented a 3-contest limit when you publish a new Instructable.  We just had too many cases where someone, for example, entered their Arduino Instructable into, say, the cupcake contest.  It became a real load on the contest managers to keep removing ineligible Instructables.  We hope that a 3-contest limit will help authors select the appropriate contest(s) to enter. We made Facebook login a bit more obvious Clarified the Pro payment page to make it clearer that there is a free account always available Couple of bugfixes around PDFs, ebooks, and patch sending That's it for now, as ever if you find problems with these or any features, let us know by adding a forum topic in the Bugs section.

Pro member's discount and other

I was looking through the discounts that pro instructables members get (which I am). I saw a 10% off your purchase from adafruit. It said that you can only use it once but I have never used it before. I was trying to buy an arduino uno, full sized breadboard, and breadboard wires. When I entered the code that I got (which I wont say on here but private message me if you need to know it) in the "enter gift certificates or discount codes" box in your cart it says invalid coupon code. Away from that, On the iOS app running iOS 6.1.6, there are many glitches in the app. One of them is that in the contest tab, it only shows some of the current contests, none of the finished and rarely it will show one that is being judged or open for voting only. Then it doesn't show all of the contests. For example, today, 6/30/14 at 4:30 pm Pacific time, It shows 15 out of 23 contests. It shows the contests: squeeze ore out of summer, Epilog 6, summer #mikehacks, paint it, great outdoors, lego, knex, metal, home tech, hair and makeup, concrete, glue, bbq, swimwear, and battery contest. The ones it doesn't show on the app that appear on the website are green design, launch it, wheels, outdoor workshop, bees, tarun featured author, r/c, and pallet contests.  Some website problems are also there, Often times you will have to click search twice because the first time it will just go to the featured page. You also have to click twice to place a comment. I'm not sure if this is a bug but I posted a Q and A topic about how I haven't got a medal for different things like being featured and getting views and also comments. I've got one featured and about 13.5k views. I should have two bronze medals. In the Q and A topic someone answered that I might not be able to get them for a certain amount of time: e.g. a year, I've been a member for about six months, so I thought that might be true. Then I saw that Bhawya already has 6 achievements including 3 medals, and she has been a member for less time than me. Also, a suggestion, it would be nice to have forums, groups, and Q&A; on the iOS app. And a collections section.

I had to clean up large sized decals that used a 3M adhesive.Instead of filtering the solvent fumes with my lungs I decided to listen to the guy in the hardware store that suggested to use a Caramel Wheel instead.Have to say I was very sceptical...Ever had this extra heavy duty 3M tape to get off again??No matter what you try it is a battle of will and endurance...To my surprise using the Caramel Wheel was like using a big eraser on paper. The things rubs over the surface, takes the goo off and leaves a totally clean and stick free surface. What otherwise took me at least a full hour was done in under 10 minutes - great...Once done with the hard work I examined the now well used up wheel.Does not really work as a proper eraser for a pencil as the rubber is much harder.Does not even scratch galvanised surfaces.Does not like it at all to be used on wet surfaces :(It is not just rubber in a fully solid form, more like flaky bits stuck together.First misuse I tried was polishing a piece of acrylic plastic.A cloth or similar always soaks up a lot of the polishing compound, which makes the process costly.Friction was a real issue at first because the wheel just had no grip at all.But on hindsight it helped to spread the compound fine and evenly. When it started to grab I noticed two things.a) The plastic warms up quickly.b) It polishes really good.Downside is that you need a low speed and very little pressure, too much of either and you risk stripping off the surface.Second misuse was on my knife. It is old, it is abused, it is loved tool I prefer, so it does not need to be razor sharp. The burr on the knife edge after sharpening should be removed.Usually I work my way up to 1000 grid, then use a leather strop. Not for this old knife though. In most cases the burr comes off with use.The Caramel Wheel had no problems removing the burr while leaving the edge sharp. And with a tiny bit of polishing paste applied it even managed to produce a extra sharp edge.Last misuse so far was to clean off old silicone from my bathroom tiles.Silicone does not like to stick to silicone!Means when you refurbish for example the silicone around your bathtub it never last long.Chemicals to remove the fine layer of silicone are harmful to say the least.I did not bother with the entire groove, just the outer parts where the new silicone needs to grab.First the wheel slips and slides off a lot but you see how it cleans the surface of the tiles. Then it starts to grab, indicating the tile is clean in this area.Won't do much in the grooves with the grouting though...What I really liked is that the wheel took off what you can't really see.The oily feeling when going over removed silicone was gone, just nice grippy tiles.
