spring airgun

Has anyone ever made a spring airgun? like an airsoft gun made from home made items. because pnumatic guns are too simple (some are very good though) but it gets anoying pumping in between shots so has anyone either made a multi shot pnumatic gun (not fully auto matic) or a spring airgun that needs to be cocked ever shot

Spring is Coming!

Spring is the time now!  Everyone mourn for a death... that of winter!  A new season is rising out of the ashes: Spring!  All of the beautiful flowers will be waking up after a long slumber, and poking their heads out of the earth.  Fruit trees will flower, and soon, there will be an abundance of wonderful fruits to share with one's fellows.  May everyone rejoice at the new time of peace that is arriving!

Spring Break

Spring Break is here! For me, that means I hole up in my house and go into town as little as possible. I live in Augusta, Georgia, the Home of the Masters Golf Tournament. Big whoop. I don't like golf, but people from across the world come to my town, just to watch the game. I'll leave on Thursday to spend 2 days in Atlanta. But what are y'all doing? Going anywhere fun? The beach? Theme park? Post where your going, and if you want, pictures when you get back! Have a fun break, Bran.

Strong coil spring

Hi, I want to build a rotating mechanism powered by a spring. Once released,I need the piece to make 2 rotations in a fraction of a second. I also need it to be quite powerful since it will have to push another piece. For this application, I believe that a coil spring (such as those we can find in clocks) is the best suited, but will it be powerful enough ? An if I use a torsion bar spring, the problem is that I probably won't find one that can make 2 turns.... they are usually designed to be used on small angles only. I would be glad to have your advices ! :)

Magnetic stirrer and springs....

Wanted to try how far the magnetic field of my new stirrer is reaching and observes something weird...If you have a normal stirring rod in a beaker then these things do excatly what they are supposed to.Even if you try to add the rodd to an empty beaker while the stirrer is already running. The first option gives you a nice rotation, the later often just some jumping and bouncing rod.Fun fact though: Inside a stirrer rotates a magnet and the rod is just a steel bar enclosed in polyethylen or teflon.Trying to make a stirring rod roll around the center instead of rotating is next to impossible - it always tries to use the max binding force and centers itself. So I tried different things for the end goal of designing a stand up stirring twoer instead. You know, like these fancy ones found in huge water towers to agitate the water.I found a small steel ball with two magnets attached quite interesting but an accident made me wonder...For some reason I did not turn the stirrer fully off when searching my little box of goodies for new stuff to try.A small spring for some motor bushes landed on the stirrer...And although it moved dead center it did not spin at all.A slight vibration was all I could see.First weird behaviur happen when I tried to move the spring around to check why it is not spinning.Pushing it a bit lengthwise suddenly made it spin!A bit of fiddling a trying showed it works best slightly off center to the magnet with one end while sitting on the radius. The spring rotated like a horizontal drill but in no relation to the stirring speed.Second and even weirder things happened when the spring slipped through my fingers. It started to roll around the center of the plate but in the opposite direction to the magnets rotattion! An increase in speed made it roll faster until the g forces made it fly off the plate. If you have a magnetic stirrer then try it out one day.I have a few theories why the spring starts to rotate or roll but none make fully sense. Can try to take a video for those with no stirrer but for the fun of it it might be good to just mount a magnet on a motor and try LOL

Spring-loaded cannon

My friend and I are considering building a spring loaded cannon. The idea right now is to have a pvc pipe for the cannon chamber, and pvc pipes flanking it to hold springs in parallel. A cross-bar will go through all 3 pipes through slits cut long ways in the pipe. The springs will be attached to some point forward in the flanking pipes and to the cross bar, which will be used to pull the springs back and, once released, will launch the dart/ball in the center tube. My research so far - the spring rates of springs loaded in parallel are additive. With 5x 10-in*lb springs, we can produce 667 newtons of force when pulled back 3 inches (springs in question are 5.5 in long) . That will produce an acceleration of 303 m*s^2 on a 1 lb (2.2 kg) albeit for only a fraction of a second. http://www.amazon.com/Extension-Spring-5-625-Long-080-count/dp/B001292S08/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s;=industrial&qid;=1257718057&sr;=1-1 These are the springs we're looking at. We'll need to use an even number of springs, so either 4 or 6 (or 8 or 10). So, what do you guys think? Practical? Will we be able to get any distance? Any suggestions? A ROUGH picture is shown below. === are spring tubes, | are handles, and left arrows indicate direction in which springs will be stretched, and the right arrow is a dart flying out of the center launch tube. <----| ===== XXXXXXXXX     ------> ===== <----|

Torsion spring resource wanted

I am going to build an arm to hold a tv that will hang from the ceiling. It will be approximately 52" for pivot to CG. As I am a teacher it will be an old fashion heavy CRT (prolly around a 25" tv)rather than cool wazoo light weight flat screen. I am looking for an appropriate torsion spring to take it from hanging to pinned up against the ceiling. I know about garage door springs but can't figure a way to retemper the spring after I cut off a few coils and bend an end so I can use it. Any ideas you may have to come up with a spring (canabalized is fine) or a retempering process would be appreciated! Thanks! Mikey

Self springing wheeled legs

I am trying to build myself a sliding truck bed drawer. There are lots of video or instruction on how to do it..However I am thinking to build it with the intent to use it as a slideout deck, so it easily could be loaded with a good amount of weight... Therefore I am thinking if anyone knows how to add a self-spring leg in the front /middle of the bed? I am talking about something like folding table legs / Gurney's legs (but with wheels.. likely wheels (ex. gate wheel) with self-adjusting spring wheel for height differences). It should spring open and lock in place as bed is extended out of the truck bed. And as the bed goes back in, it should able to hit the legs and allow it to fold back up.What you guys think?

Machined Spring Powered Car

OK, I think after posting in some of the other forums that maybe this is the best place. I have asked for some help in the Tech, Science, and Burning Questions Forum (Not sure if I should have started a new thread in each one for this project so if I should delete the other's please let me know). I am new to the forums and just signed up for a 2 year pro membership to help contribute as I have been viewing on and off here and there for the past few years. If anyone can help me make this, it would be much appreciated! I came across the object shown in the link below and shown in the attached pictures. It is the  "Toy Car" by the designer "Wouter Scheublin". It is a spring powered toy car made in the limited edition of 20. It does not look very complex, but does look elegant. It can be purchased for close to $3,500.00 US on the justification that it is art, but that is not something I will ever be able to afford for this type of object. I am not insinuating that it is not worth it (last year I actually contacted the designer as well as the people selling it for him to see if I could pick one up for substantially less).  In any case, please check out the link below for pictures and let me know where a good place to start making the components might be or just where to start in the design and build process period would be. I guess I would need to know the actual parts needed before I could start to assemble even something remotely similar and I figured the geniuses that use the forums here could help me (being that its December and in the spirit of giving and sharing and all) or maybe someone here might even be interested in possible making with me. Thanks in advance for your consideration and reply. See Link Below.  http://www.wouterscheublin.com/projects/toy-car/ On another note, I really really love this kind of gadget. Metal (or wood), Mechanical, Simple, Elegant. I have searched everywhere and have trouble finding a site specific to these types of objects. small precision desktop machines like a well machined Stirling engine or the like. (no need to be powered. Can anyone point me to a place that has such things. Another example of something I like (and did purchase) is the super precision gyroscope from gyroscope.com. http://gyroscope.com/d.asp?product=SUPER2 Another example of a mechanical gadget I would love to have or like to read about is. http://www.ohgizmo.com/2011/11/28/hypnotizing-video-of-the-worlds-smallest-v-12-engine-being-assembled/

How to add energy to a spring system?

I need to make a metronome out of a spring and mass system, one that has a mass on a vertical spring that goes up and down. Here's the catch: it needs to be accurate for more then 2 minutes, so I want to find a way to maybe hit the spring just a bit so that it will keep going. But, I don't have any access to a motor, or electrical source. Does anyone know how to do this? Like mechanically? I was thinking like how a clock conserves energy, but mine moves vertical.

Laser cutting a spring - choice of material? Answered

I have a scheme that requires a flat, non-conducting spring. Acrylic it too brittle for my needs, but I know that some plastics can, when cut with a laser, give off fumes and gases that will damage the laser cutter (eg PVC gives off gases that will cloud the mirrors). What materials would you recommend? (I've attached a quick sketch of the general shape of the planned spring.) EDIT: I've added a rough sketch of the project - a torch, cut from acrylic. The four projections are to bind it together with an elastic band.  The switch operates like a syringe.

Spring powered internal air compressor

Hello everyone, I've come here for some help on designing a PVC-based air tank. I'm planning on building a pneumatic cannon that I can charge once and use to fire multiple short bursts of air. To do I decided to have two tanks -one large tank acting as the main tank and a local tank with a much smaller volume fed by the main. My problem is that I want to squeeze out all the air I can from the main tank, and I'm not entirely sure what the best way to do that would be. My current design uses a spring behind a wooden plunger so that as the volume of compressed air drops, the spring can extend and restore the pressure. (Image attached for clarity) Can anyone spot potential problem areas or places that could be improved?

Spring thaw drainage dc pump

Every year we get large puddles around our property in low lying areas. Our front sidewalk also dips down at our steps and gets a huge pool. I could shopvac the puddles but the problem is they REFILL slowly but consistently until the grass dries out during the spring thaw. This is a big problem because in the morning these large puddles are ICE and are slippery as anything. Then they thaw during the day and the cycle repeats - for a month or so.So I took an old cheap craftsman tool box and put in a 12v5A battery and a 12v5A pump. The pump uses 3/8" clear hose that you'd see coming from a condensate pump. I put in a 20 mesh filter reservoir thing to keep out small particles from the pump.I ran it and WOW - not only did it work perfectly but even my wife thinks it is "cool". The pump works at about 1 gallon a minute. I purposely did NOT want a high capacity pump. I wanted to move the water slowly and allow it to drain back in. Also if you move water slowly you have way less problem with sucking in leaves, etc. It just quietly does its thing and in about 1/2 hour the puddle is gone. The problem is - overnight the puddle comes back.So I'm going to wire in a dial to slow the rate of flow down.I'd also like to make a water sensor switch. The water has very little salt in it so no electrolytes to make good current. I tried zip tying two wires to the mouth of the intake and wiring them between the battery and pump positive side. No dice.Does anyone know how to make a water activated switch that would work here? If I could get that done I'd have both flow rate and auto on/off. Sweeeeet.

Will a torsion spring work with this broom/mop holder? Answered

I am in the late stages of working on a broom/mop holder.  The engineering is not original, however, I may be able to show how to make it fast and cheap!  The function of the device centers on a Cam which rotates up or down and then automatically returns to a "home position". As you slide a broom handle into the cam, the cam gently opens up and accomodates the handle.  But when you pull down or let the broom go, the cam rotates downward and holds the broom very steady.  To remove broom, just push it upward a bit... The design I currently have is using elastic - but I believe we could employ a torsion spring instead. Would using a torsion spring work? How would it work or be positioned on the device? Can I make a torsion spring?  (i'd really like to do this) Can I buy them at reasonable prices anywhere? I have included a few pictures to illustrate the question... Note:  I did later figure out how to properly spell "TORSION" Included is a shot of some example springs. Also in one of the shots, I attached the mechanism to a clear plastic OJ bottle. (thought it might be easier to see the mechanics this way) Thank you for any input you may have!

Is my Spring in the Air - or my prop not supported? Answered

I have been reading on this site about the problems associated with building and using a vehicle for road use that runs on a clock-work basis. The square cube law problem re the spring and also the problems created by the gyro forces of the flywheel. What I want to ask is: Would it be possible to have a spring or series of springs big enough that could drive a generator to charge a bank of batteries that would then power a narrowboat on the inland waterways and potentially rivers of the UK. There is a company that supplies engines and batteries and their paraphernalia suggests it is possible to get 2 hours of battery propulsion from one hour of diesel use - http://www.betamarine.co.uk/inland/Beta_Hybrid/inland_hybrid.html. So, if the engine was removed could it be possible to use some kind of clockwork spring-thing instead of the engine big enough to charge batteries that would then power the boat. I am thinking that winding the spring would be done but either a very geared down bicycle or some kind of geared down lever crank with ratchet or even a transportable friendly donkey...I appreciate that fitness and maintaining it would be important to wind up the spring by pedalling the bike, cranking the lever or chatting to the donkey to keep it friendly. How big would the spring need to be and how long would it take to wind it up by bicycle, crank or donkey. Keen to know what the real problems would/could be...am thinking it might be possible to use a series of springs so they do not have to be so very big and therefore could overcome the square cube law problem and how many would be needed to charge the bank of batteries to then turn the prop.

Is it reasonably possible to build my own torsion springs? Please see details and picture? Answered

the actual coil of the spring could be no larger then 1/2" as it would need to fit in to connecting tubes with an i.d. of just a bit larger then 1/2"  The 2 ends would need to be around 3/4 long, if that makes sense.  It would not need a ton of strength as it would be bent by a small gear motor.  The only catch is that it would be under tension for potentially extended periods of time, 5-10 minutes.  I would be needing around 15 of them, perhaps a few more for any whoops that should occur.  So, if it is a long process it may be easier trying to source out on ebay.  I am on the extreme side of rural so it not simply a trip to the hardware store.  Any ideas would be great, thanks.
