how to recreate this LED bundle hanging lamp inexpensively

This isn't even yet available in teh US, but it's pretty amazing looking i think.i'm thinking of how it can be made... cheap metal tubes for each led with 2 thin leads? or thin rods with a little insulated wire wraped around leading to the LED?i think this can be done smartly, cheaply and efficiently -- totally unlike how it will be sold in the us.who has experience with these materials and wants to mock one up?http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/05/13/kenzan-tsutakawa-chinn-constellation-lamp/

Using a USB Bluetooth bundle into a home brewed device

Hey everyone, I am a student in software engineering and I am leading a project with other folks in software and electric engineering as some artists which consist of developing a computer game that use a home brewed device. That device is essentially a wii-mote ripoff: we will use some gyroscopes and accelerometer to get user input. However, some of the parts we are looking for are very expensive, we need to do 3 of theses devices and we don't have a big budget :) Since the most expensive part is the bluetooth transmitter (our device needs to be wireless), I was looking for a workaround. First, why bluetooth? Well we thought using some FM or RF stuff, however that implies some rare stuff that is not embedded in our student computers and even more expensive... So that's why we thought using bluetooth... And my question is... Is that possible and not so complicated to use those cheap USB bluetooth bundle such as these ones: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords;=bluetooth+adapter ? When I say not so complicated, I mean that we won't have a big controller... we will have just what we need to get the data from analogical sensors turn it into digital data and send it over USB. Looking over the web I found that some RS232 to bluetooth bundles exists, however they are very expensive... It might be an utopia, electrical stuff is really not my field of study. Thanks for your help!

How do I add on fiber optic bundles to the end of a large single Fiber optic strand/LED?

I need to figure out how to add on a lot of multi-strand fiber optics to the end of large single strand or single LED. I would like to create a lighted and animated cuttle fish sculpture and I want to know how I would be able to get the most amount of small single dots of light from a single LED. The LEDs will be individually animated in the belly of the beast and light patterns will appear on the surface...

How to build a thatch roof for chicken coop from giant canes?

I have an unlimited supply of massively invasive canes (Arundo donax) growing on my property, and my chicken coop needs a roof.  Anyone have ideas on turning canes in their natural state into roofing material?   I will start just experimenting with weaving together lengths of cane, but some experienced advice would be very welcome. EDIT: Traditional thatching appears to involve attaching bundles to each other by essentially sewing them with wire or flexible blanches.  I'm thinking this is a specialized craft precisely because the techniques are not entirely improvisable. concerns:  weather proof materials (aside from canes, fixtures that will not rust/mold/decay) technique of attaching bundles to rafters? peak of the roof?

What do you recommend for wire connectors / clamps for making a Nitinol shape-setting fixture?

I'm weaving Nitinol wire so I have a square piece of plywood with the shape that I'm weaving around placed in the center and the bundle of .7mm Nitinol wire is emanating also from the center.  For clamps I used speaker posts that have hand-rotatable post "screw-collars" and are gold-plated.  However they're really hard to work with and to mount.  They're great because they also have a high-current screw-in wire junction in the back.   Anyway, what alternatives can you think of while requiring a hand-turnable release and clamp of the Nitinol wires (so plain terminal blocks won't work unless you also found a screw with a handle that fits).  There will be about 20-100 small wires used in the bundle to weave the shape.  And the board is about 30cm sq. at the moment so more likely there will be only 20, in order to fit the wire clamps unless you know of a micro method, such as: copper tubes and "nails", which might work now that I think of it...

There are similar projects on this website but all using less diodes. I'm also not convinced that wiring all the diodes in a parallel circuit is the best route. Major Parts KIT for 8X8 CUBE LED - from Furturlec

I don't have the time to tackle this project but I already ordered the major electronic components including the boards from Futurlec. They are likely back in stock now or you may be able to get one locally. But this should certainly get you on your way.  The total is just over $40. I will ship it out Priority anywhere in the US for $30. That will beat the 20+ days from Asia.  I have not opened the bundle, but if anything major is missing beyond a 10c resistor I will contact Futurlec myself.  (This is NOT the Tindle KIT)

Splicing and extending a cable connecting a lens and sensor module to the camera's main body?

For a while i had this odd idea, of separating the lens sensor module from the Contour camera body, so i could have it inside the helmet front vent hole, and the main body on the back of the helmet. So im thinking of splicing a longer cable in between. an IDE cable perhaps? It is shielded, pretty much the perfect match The image is what  inside the camera between the lens module and the main body. The idea was to cut that blue bundle, and to splice the ide cable in (wire by wire) So the question  are - Is the IDE cable a good choice, or i ought to use other cables. - What are my chances for failure/success? The camera aint worth much anymore, but i dont really want to break it.

Easy spray/liquid *open cell* foam?

Hi all - new here  :)  I was trying to think of where I could ask this and I immediately thought of instructables.  Does anyone have any ideas where I could find a spray or liquid *open cell* foam?  It's easy to find cans of spray closed-cell foam these days, but I've never seen one for open cell foam.  I've done a lot of searching, and the only open foam cell solutions I find tend to be giant expensive things for insulating houses in bulk, nothing for small scale applications.  I'm looking to fill a bundle of relatively fine tubes (diameter TBD), which I want to act as a sponge on the inside, resisting allowing the liquid inside to drain out while still allowing for gas migration.  Hence closed cell is not an option.  Polyurethane is probably fine, although other materials may well be fine as well. Any ideas?

Faraday generator for your bicycle led light

I'm looking for a way to make a Faraday generator of some sort to put on my bikes rear wheel to power my led lights( a 56LED 3-1.5v AA's and 26LED 3-1.5v AAA's. I found something close that may work with some design changes. I found a magnet site with a magnet that could work with the wheel. I would mount it to the rim itself and put the copper coil attached to the bike. The problem is winding the coil of copper wire, gauge and what type of direction to make it. And the possible use of ultra capacitors or a built in charging system for the batteries. I would need a minimum voltage of 9 volts for the lights to run. The way the example light works is with a fly wheel and the bike's rim would take that place. The design is pretty simple and should work fine. The hub is 1.5" diameter and .5" deep with room across for the bundle of wound wires. Just looking for input and if anyone has thought of this before. Thanks.

fibre optics

Hello, Hope to find here some information about Optical Fibres. I am building an under water housing for DSLR. I want to use it just under the water surface. Controlling (through an air bridge) and exposure (through optical light guide) are on land. The question is about optical fibres. I need a 160 cm long Fibre Optic Lightguide. A 1/4 inch diameter guide costs near 200 GBP. When I would make one myself of 1/2 inch diameter, I could safe 75 % + the entrance surface is more than 3 times larger, which is important, since I will have to guide the light of a flash gun! BUT, I doubt wether such a diy bundle of 1,5 mm diameter plastic fibres from ebay will give me roughly the same or preferably more light output as/than a professional guide? How do these plastic ebay fibres compare to professional or glass fibres in terms of light transfer efficiency? Any suggestions? If not, then a reference to another forum where they might be able to answer my questions, would be much appreciated.

wiring of L.E.D. bulbs for constant "on" and reduced heat ?

Self-confessed "tinkerer" with little/no electronics knowledge OR understanding....In need of guidance/expertise ? I have a project; requires constant 5V (from USB) to power/light several L.E.D.'s (either cool white or bright white) in a straight line(s) to illuminate an area approx. 1/2" (W)x 6.0"(L) x 1" (H)... Not knowing the power requirements of various L.E.D.'s ....some LED's require 12V and additional equipment. And the expected period of use being 6-8 hrs (max.) - I'm afraid of problems regarding heat dissipation and poor LED longevity ? With these constraints, I'm unsure if this is feasible or not ? Any help or suggestions ?  Have "tinkered with a string of LED's powered by (3) AA batteries = 4.5 volts x 30 LED bulbs. Didn't seem to get hot using the batteries. After cutting these bulbs from string and "bundling " positive (+) and negative (-) ends and connecting to 5V from USB ...got very warm-hot ? Reading various online posts that seem to agree that the output from batteries is NOT constant...is this the problem OR maybe not using "resistors" and not knowing what type or how many would be needed ?

Comment Notifications

As you know, we're always updating the site to try and improve it for you. Sometimes we go a bit overboard... Recently we changed how you're notified when someone comments on an Instructable you wrote, or a forum you started, or replied to a comment you wrote, etc. People were getting a ton of emails, each with just one comment in it. So we created the ability to bundle these up into just one email, which you can get hourly or daily (or not at all). (Oh, and you can still get individual emails if you prefer - just update your user settings to suit you.) All well and good! But there was a small problem deep in the guts of the notification code, wherein it periodically skipped notifying some people of some comments, some of the time. Since a lot of people were getting notifications normally, it took a while to figure this out. I just fixed it... and there were a LOT of old comments that hadn't been sent yet, that just went out all at once! At least one user got notified of 93 comments. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that that was a backlog, and not normal, and going forward you should only have the one hour's worth, or one day's worth, depending on how you've set up your account.

Wiring question?

Hi everyone. Long time visitor of Instructables, made a few items I've seen and my most recent project was adding a star power pedal to my guitar hero controller. I bought a audio extension cable with a male and female jack, 1/8th size. I cut the cable about six inches from the female end. I stripped about an inch, inside was a bundle of copper wire wrapped around a clear insulted wire. I twisted the exposed copper wire and tinned it, I stripped the clear housing and twisted it, tinning them as well. I tinned the exposed wire to the GND, and the clear to Select. Positioned the jack and everything went well. I took the male cable, connected it to momentary switch and connected the male cable to the female jack. Turned on the system and controller. Got star power and hit the switch with no response. I'm very confident in my soldering and know I did it correctly, so I was wondering: 1) Are these kind of cables capable of doing what I intend? 2) Maybe the GND or the Select button are shorted out on the board of the controller? Thanks for any help everyone!

I keep honing my Mountain Man skills.  Thanks, as ever, Triumphman (aka Mountain Man)!                                                                                                                                                                                                     *                                                                                                                                                                                                             *                 I have finally come to the conclusion that I have to make my own teepee cover!    I will have to buy some canvas by the yard! Does anyone know how much canvas I will need for an 18 ft. tall by 50 ft. circumference teepee frame ? If the canvas comes in 3 ' width or 5 ' width . I have made a paper half circle teepee model, but the numbers evade me! Thanks.

You know those protective disks you find on a fresh stack of CDs or DVDs?

NOT the actual recordable disks. Those disks that come with a fresh stack of recordable media that are usually kept long enough to keep dust off those items, then get tossed when one runs out of disks. I need them. I use them in my art, making Alien Orchids and such https://www.wepay.com/stores/484374 I have been told that with the way technology is moving I will have a hard time finding these disks in the future. I already do! I'm down to about 6 and I can go through that many trying to make one good orchid. I would be happy to pay for shipping for a bundle of 10 or more at a time but what I would like is to find someone with access to a lot of them and pay per flat-rate Priority shipping box full. I think a small box (about the size of a video tape) would probably hold at least  40 disks and if I paid $10 it would cover shipping and put a few bucks in your pocket. Or I could give a shop credit so you can buy stuff I've made out of other stuff. If you can get a box-full together gimme a shout and we'll discuss details... I am also finding it tough to acquire used inner tubes - bike or (especially) auto. I have a project I'd like to finish and don't want to have to purchase a new tube just to cut up. Lets save the Bees. Things YOU can do!

Bee habitat is not just flowers, it is also brood space and shelter. Most bees are not honey bees or bumble bees, they are little solitary bees  and they do a lot of polination. We need to provide them with lots of brood space and overnight shelter too!  And modern garden practice is simply not doing it. First of all, I am not a bee racist. I am trying to help all the bee species.  I find that there is a succession of different bee species through the year. And they use different size holes .   In fact they don't just lay eggs in these holes, they shelter in them too. I did not know this..  This year I also discovered that they burrow into the pith in old raspberry stems and in grape vines! So if you compost your old raspberry canes,  you are probably composting bee babies  too. Dave from Camas, Washington has been bundling teasel stems for several years for orchard mason bees.   You could do the same with raspberry canes!? http://www.permies.com/permaculture-forums/520_0/critter-care/orachard-mason-bees I found this a week ago after I had started my project.  I make holes in cop blocks for the bees. I have also started layering plant stems At least 4 bee species are using the first cob bee blocks for brood or shelter.  I have some pictures at the link below.  Hopefully you can see the captions too. Brian https://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=246092&id;=736625766&l;=26546198d6 I am too Lazy to post an instructable right now and I am still learning the cob bee house thing.

RV plans for sale $45.00

The Wildwood lets the home builder make his own motorhome that looks just like expensive factory-built units. It can be built on cut-off vans, chassis cab trucks, or even pick-up trucks with the bed removed if of suitable capacity. Options on the plans allow for long and short wheelbase units. The floor plan shown is a popular layout used on long wheelbase models, however, you can vary the arrangement considerably to suit your own requirements, as well as to suit shorter units. Our comprehensive plans show how it's done, including simple details and instructions for mounting the coach to the chassis, cab attaching methods for cut-off vans, as well as all the other necessary information to allow you to do a professional job. Plus, full size patterns are provided for the contoured sidewall portions for accurate construction. Best of all, you save a bundle by building your own.Specifications*Coach length overall 20'0"Coach width overall 7'11"Interior length overall 19'8"Interior width overall 7'7"Interior height (headroom) min 6'6"Cabover headroom (deduct for mattress) 30"Fresh water capacity (standard) 30 gallonsHolding tank capacity (standard) 30 gallonsLPG capacity variesCoach weight (dry estimated) 3000 lbs.Sleeping capacity 6 adultsTruck type: Designed for use on chassis cab or cut-off van-type trucks of suitable GVW rating. The Wildwood is designed as illustrated ]for use on so-called "long wheelbase" trucks having a GVW (gross vehicle weight) rating of 9000 lbs. minimum which is reflected in the above specifications. The plans provide details for a shorter option for use on "short wheelbase" trucks which should have a GVW rating of 8000 lbs. minimum. It is possible to vary the plans to suit other truck chassis which may not fall into these classifications, as long as the GVW ratings are of comparable minimums or larger. Since truck chassis are extremely variable, the above specifications should be considered an approximation.

PC Rife software home-made plasma globe: Anyone do this ?

I have been self-treating various illnesses for a while now using some bio-electrical methods. One of which is the resonance method developed by Dr. Royal Rife in years past - but modernized using the PC as a freq. gen. and an audio amp to process the output. Some info on the various methods and specifications: http://www.introductiontorife.com/poor_mans_rife.html http://www.royalrife.com/lists.html http://www.rife.org/ http://www.electroherbalism.com/Bioelectronics/FrequenciesandAnecdotes/CAFL.htm http://heal-me.com.au/frex.html http://heal-me.com.au/frex-pfa.html ( Related, and also fascinating:   http://www.royalrife.com/electronics.html ) The PC/Rife/amp combo works well, but the better way is supposed to be via a plasma-tube, which is very expen$ive. Another way to do this is by using a plasma globe with an audio input used to modulate the discharges via the frequencies; this is also too expen$ive for me right now. Some users here have come up with ways to make your own plasma globe with a HV supply and a big incandescent light bulb. Great. Now - how does one modulate the discharges in the bulb by overlaying or adding the Rife frequencies ? This question seems hard for most to understand and I was even told to make a 'plasma speaker' when I asked one of the experts-> great idea-> as long as one is a crazed audiophile with $$$ to burn and a high resistance to exposure to pure/fresh ozone. (No thanks for me.) Is there any really smart person here (who understands my question...) with good suggestions for how to do this without 1) spending a bundle 2)massive ozone generation in the room 3)massive injuries and/or fatal results ? Also I have seen where people do the light bulb/plasma globe thing related with experimenting on ballasts from compact flourescents - but again there is a lack of info on how to do this as well as any means to overlay or control it with a desired audio frequency. Thanks !

Cheap and Easy Homemade Chai Latte'

I paid $3 for my first mug of Chai Latte' in one of those fancy internet cafe's. It was love at first sip, but I didn't have $3 for every time i craved another mug. I tried a number of powdered and liquid mixes, but couldn't find anything cheap enough for me. Then I found (and modified) a recipe for making it at home, and many who have tasted it say it's better than Starbucks. I drink as much as I want now without guilt! Here's the simple recipe: In a sauce pan, combine 2 C. water, 2 regular tea bags, 1/8-1/4 t. EACH of ground ginger and cardamon, 1 whole clove, and one cinnamon stick. Boil for 5 minutes. Then add 1/4 c. sugar (or 6 Splenda pkts.), and 2 1/2 C. milk. Bring to a boil, strain (if desired) and serve. Notes: 1. If you purchase your spices at the grocery store, you'll pay a bundle. You can get most of them at Gordon Food Service or similar places. Cardamon will be harder to find in a quantity. I have had lots of luck, though, at health food stores. You can purchase it by weight in small quantities and pay a fraction of the grocery store price. (A jar of cardamon at the store was $11 - the same quantity at the health food store was less than $2.) 2. Did you know that cinnamon sticks don't get "used up" very quickly? I used to throw the cinnamon stick away after each batch of chai - what a waste! Now I rinse it when I'm done and give it a sniff - if it smells cinnamon-y, it still has flavor to impart. In this recipe, you can reuse your cinnamon sticks 3-4 times - maybe more! 3. Variations: If you want a more dessert-like beverage, top off your chai with a dallop of whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg - YUM! Also, it can be made more or less rich by varying what kind of milk you use (skim or whole) or even replacing some of the milk with cream. Making homemade chai might not make you rich, but it will make the lean times taste a lot better! Enjoy!
