I bought a footlocker, but just can't figure out how the included lock works. I'll be using my own padlock, but it would be nice to have the built in one working, too. The cylinder appears to be plastic, and the black tab above it unlatches the lock when pushed down. I can turn the key freely over and over, but it just never locks. Is anybody familiar with this type of lock that could offer some assistance? Thanks!

Had this idea for some time and ill possibly do it when i learn more electronics stuff. But for now, i'll share the idea! So imagine you have a secure locked door. Theres no keypad or keyhole anywhere on or near the door, but there is a microphone setup on it. The only way to open the door would be to play whatever song or series of notes that are programmed into the "lock" with a musical instrument. Since there are several lock-based instructables here that use arduino boards, would it be possible to use one with whatever required components to make a lock that opens with music as a key?

My first question was for a wooden box. This one asks: Can someone please help me by giving me tips on making a lock for a door? I want to lock up my tool shed, as it has a door, covered in tarp. The tarp keeps the rain out, if you are wondering, because the door is wood and chicken wire. Help, please? There's so many clever people at Instructables I know I'll get good answers. I am trying to get the arduino to know when a certain RFID tag has been read.(so it can be used in a lock application) I tried taking the code array variable and seeing if it was equal to the the what showed up in the serial monitor window with the program on the arduino playground page. But it came up with the error "exponent has no digits" . So what would I have to use so that the arduino can interpret the "code" array and see if it is equal to a certain tag? I know that there are already door lock programs out there, but I like to know how programs work so I can learn from them and apply that to future projects. Thanks in Advance! AI

Hey I've seen the movie city of ember and there you have a box that locks itself from the inside, only to open again once the preset time has expired. I'd love to make one for a friend of mine (and for me as well), who's always distracted during the examination, so he could lock his distractions away for the time needed. I browsed hours to find timers and count down circuits. the best things that I could find, never were longer than e few hours or a day. but for this project it should at least last a month. I got a weird Idea of hooking up egg timers in series, so if the first one ends, the next one starts, until your last one finished that opens the box (the more I think about it, the more it's sounding impossible to do) the next best thing that would simplify the build was an arduino, but since these are essentially tiny computers I think it would be a wast to just let them count down. (and doesn't a arduino consume a lot of power too?) and I would like to only use an arduino as last resort... you can make robots out of these little board, it would be too tempting to pull it out of my project and try to make something cool with it. would any of these idea's work descent? does anyone know what could be the best way to pull this off? thanks

It made me think; could a balloon filled with sober air be used to fool the machine ? Does anyone in the industry know ?; If so, it would seem a very simple loophole. Thank you. Last year, i made the circuit of this already but now my brother is asking for my help and i cannot remember it now. im focusing right now in programming and forgot my logic circuit skills..please help me to remember this... what i remembered is that i have shift registers that memorized the buttons (0-9) i pressed...then i enter again a sequence of numbers and the device will check if it corresponds to the numbers i entered...the led will light if it is correct and will not if the numbers entered did not match the default numbers... i still have the list of some materials, 3 universal shift registers, 1 nand ic, 3 xnor ic, 10 toggle switch and 1 hold switch.. its not a very complex circuit..my only problem is to remember on how will i work with the shift registers... please enlighten me once again

Google led me here, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the ingenuity of the people here! Hopefully someone here can help me. I'm trying to find a USB-controlled box. The box can be quite small, as it needs to contain just a single key. As for the USB part, I can go two ways: first, I would need the state of the box lid (i.e. open or closed) to be sent via USB to the computer. Or, the second alternative would be that the box lid would only open if a certain signal was received via the USB cable. I can do the software programming to either send or interpret the signal, it's the mechanical part I can't figure out. I would happily pay someone to build this for me. Any suggestions? Thanks! Lee

Is this a flaw that is apparent to all laptop lock using keys or just that one model? Can I safely use my off brand Certified Data key laptop lock without worries of this flaw applying to my lock? Also, it uses a round type key with multiple drilled depression on the side.

So, my brother and I found ourselves locked out of the house with the only possible help hours away. Not to be defeated, we unscrewed the lock on the garage door, grabbed my keys (which I had left in there) and got inside the house. This is probably kiddie stuff compared to most of you but I'm still feeling kinda awesome and wanted to share.

This is somewhat of a funny question, but I am in a need of a serious solution. My grandfather always manages to mess his computer up with virus/ crapware/ malware /. He is running Windows 7 and I am trying to lock his computer to prevent install of new programs/ crapware. Something similar to what they use on college computers. Any one know of the software? that I can use?

Someone at HQ has sensibly "locked" the comment about the awarding of free membership for bug reports where many members were posting their bugs, to deaf ears. However, "locking" puts no special message on the visible topic....so if you attempt to find the "reply" button, it isn't present in the locked thread, so, for all the world the forum software looks "broken". Wondering if anyone knows a way to bead an RFID lock reader, like the ones found on many security doors at schools and stores. I thought maybe there would be a way to make a RFID from a credit card, DVD case, etc. into one which could be used to unlock these security locks.

I have recently been searching for a cheap bike lock or a way to make one. Yesterday I went to a garage sale with my friend, what we found there where combination locks for $1 dollar each. I quickly bought one, and then the lady asked what I needed it for. I told her now I just needed to buy some chain and I wouldnt have to sped a lot of money on a bike lock. She out of nowhere handed me the chain and let me have it for $1. Well anyway thats how I acquired it but does anybody know if theese locks can be picked or if the chain can be broken. The chain is in moderatly good condition and is as thick as the stuff used for swings. I dont have a pictrue because my camera needs batteries

This is something I came across whilst working on my RBG just now. A blockade that stops a firing pin from leaving a potential gun which is nearly frictionless. The grey rod would be the firing pin. The gear placed close to the barrel ( grey connectors ) stops the pin from leaving the barrel, but it can still move freely very smoothly. Just thought I would share it with you guys. To think this came up by accident ;)

The indestructable bike lock: the forum topic that was posted undeniably just to annoy the future patenters!So I had this weird idea for a product come out of nowhere. Y'know how aluminum is supposed to make cutting wheels on an angle grinder gum up, stick, and shatter - when trying to cut it, that is? I was wondering, what if a company engineered a special type of aluminum alloy or a similar material that would do just that: gum up abrasive cutting wheels and make them stick/bind and shatter. Then like with layers of plywood, it would be sandwiched together with hardened steel, in the shape of a U-lock bike lock, making it: Impossible to cut through with a hacksaw, reciprocating saw, TCT bladed portaband , because it's hardened and would wreck the teeth. Impossible to cut through with an angle grinder or rotary tool with an abrasive wheel because the aluminum would gum it up. Impossible to cut through it with bolt cutters - obviously... Impossible to freeze it with freezing gas? I don't know. I heard that's what thieves do. Maybe that aluminum alloy would be a super-insulator and wouldn't allow the hardened steel layer to freeze and become more brittle?I think it might just be invincible until the portable cordless battery powered waterjet is invented!Thoughts?

I'm currently assembling an Obstacle Avoiding Walking Robot, however I find the legs keep locking up. Basically, as I move the legs the nuts are tightening to the point where the legs won't move any more. I have washers in all the correct places so must be missing something else. Any tips on how to avoid this? Thanks. James.

I've been reading about how easy it is for a computer to try 1000 passwords per second to get into your account. A human being could probably only try 1 every 10 seconds. So why not put a timer on the gate? If you enter the wrong password, you have to wait 10 seconds before trying another.

I am curious if any of you have an idea for something that could detect a bracelet from 5-10 feet and when it leaves, issue a sleep command to a computer. I think it would be relatively easy to issue the command from an arduino, but I'm not very sure on which tags and readers to use for the right range. The idea would be for the computer to automatically sleep/lock when you leave the room. So what frequencies/types of tags and readers should I look into that will offer a decent range, that is close enough not to loose connection reaching across the desk or walking a few feet across the room, but won't work from a few rooms down the hall, and will interface well with an arduino.

OK so I would like to use a solenoid to unlock a box from the inside, problem is the electronic circuit I designed inside the box operates on 3 vdc and as far as I can tell most solenoids operate on a voltage of 6-24 vdc. Is there any way to make a simple driver circuit for a solenoid so it can operate on 3 vdc? Below is a copy of the box's circuit so far. I would like the solenoid to be in parallel with the "puzzle solved LED."

For days I have tried to bring up a PDF on any number of Instructables to no avail. The page seems to be attempting the download, but then nothing. However, in that process everything ... absolutely everything ... the mouse, keyboard commands, etc. ... nothing works ... FROZEN! Several days ago I went to Instructables for the first time in a couple weeks at least. As soon as I tried to connect, my virus protection came up and said there had been an attempted attack on my computer which had been averted. I see much prior discussion about "bugs" and expect there may be some connection. I have only been a member about three months, but I certainly hope this bug situation gets resolved. Had I read about the Instructables' website problem beforehand, I likely would not have shelled out the $ to join. Thanks for your immediate attention.

Hi Everyone, I've been searching for a small (20 to 30mm Dia) disc shaped EM lock for a project I'm working on but can't find any. This type of lock's function, where when the electrical power is turned on the magnet activates, attracting a pin or plate, is what I need it to do but I can't find them small and flat enough. I then found some 24V EM brakes for a "Duplicator" (copy machine?) on Ebay where the size may be ok but if they were flatter it would be better. From what I understand these work the opposite way. The brake pad is normally engaged ("locked") to the hub by a spring, then when electrical power is turned on, the brake pad separates from the hub allowing it to rotate. Is this correct? Would it be possible to convert the brake into a lock merely by reversing the wiring or would I need to reverse the direction of the winding? Would that work to then attract a plate when it is turned on? Also, how much could I reduce the voltage and have it still attract a metal plate with a decent strength - say from 1/4" away? Looking for some advice on wiring a car power door lock actuator and remote central locking keyless entry system to a 12volt power adapter. We've got a chicken coop that I would like to connect the actuator to so we can open the latch from inside the house. The items we have are a CfD Universal Car Power Door Lock Actuator 12-Volt Motor & a Docooler® Car Remote Central Lock Locking Keyless Entry System with Remote Controllers. The Remote has 10 wires coming from its harness. I know enough about electrical wiring to efficiently burn the house to the ground. Figured I would post a question here before that happens or I destroy the thing. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks
