Meat experiment

I don't have a fridge, so when I didn't eat this pound of minced beef for a bit too long I decided not to eat it at all. Then I didn't dispose of it, and then I became interested in not disposing of it. I'm not sure when I bought it, but it's probably 5 weeks ago. Apart from having seeped juice and reduced it's internal pressure it looks OK.Any ideas as to whether this might be safe to eat if cooked? I plan on keeping it longer to see what happens...17-MAY-2009 Panic! I lost the meat, after a while I found it under the grill which I rarely use. More than 2 months our of date and not much change (re-inflated a bit)

Swap Meat

I just ran across this thing:http://www.coudal.com/swapmeat/You send them something you made, and they send you something they made. I always have stuff I made that for various reasons I don't want to keep - it's not quite up to my tweaky-high quality standards, or I changed my mind about the color, or it doesn't fit and I don't feel like working on it any more.Normally I would try this first and report my experiences, but since the deadline is Aug 31, I might not have time to ship and receive AND write up! So there it is, not a recommendation but a Mere link. I'll comment here once I've sent them something and again if I get anything back. I plan to send them a Tribble.Has anyone heard of this? Did you send anything? Did you get anything back?

Eating Meat and Overpopulation

I'm not try to start a flame war just wanna bounce some Ideas around. If everyone stopped eating meat and animal products (total vegan). What would happen to the animal population. I think at first it would increase dramatically, then after humans started to consume more and more fruits and vegetables there would be a shortage of food ether for humans or animals (most likely animals). Which would cause a sharp decrees in animal population (possible extinction of species lower on the chain). Or if there is not enough fruits and vegies for humans, they will be forced to eat animals. What do you think?

Meat Free Mondays

San Francisco joins communities across the world in observing Meat-Free Mondays.  Too bad no one told us. Apparently back in April the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved legislation declaring the first day of the week meat-free Mondays, now known as Vegetarian Day or Veg Day. Supposedly, the legislation urges “all restaurants, grocery stores and schools to offer a greater variety of plant-based options to improve the health of San Francisco residents and visitors and to increase the awareness of the impact a green diet would be on our planet.” Consider awareness. . . unaffected. This seems like something that would be plastered all over San Francisco buses, sign posts, and veg-friendly shops.  Did I miss the flier at the co-op?  Probably.  Nonetheless, just as banning plastic bags took hold (uh, sort of), I'm sure the wave of Meat-Free Monday observers is sure to swell and sweep the city by storm.  I'll let you know when the falafel shop steals all the Monday business from the burger shop downstairs.  Actually. . .  it's the same shop.  So maybe they are onto something after all. via: the sf examiner

Meat Ship Sets Sail

If you're planning on eating several pounds of sausage and bacon you might as well get some friends over and make a boat out of it, right? Yeah, sure.We have an Instructable for making placemats out of bacon and bacon soap, but this is pretty epic in comparison. This is all great if you're into bacon. Which I'm not. It's one of my least favorite things to eat and I find this to be pretty disgusting, but I hear that I'm pretty much on my own for that opinion. Most everyone else finds it delicious. MeatShip

If you see tinned meat...

You may have noticed another rash of spam over the weekend. It seems "they" found a way around the filters, which the development team have not yet solved.  Generally, if you see spam, either in the forums or as actual instructables, the best thing to do is to hit the flag button and move on. If you leave a comment, the systems that quarantine spam get slowed down, and the spam remains visible for longer than we would like. If the spammers go beyond annoying, and actually become offensive, you should still not comment, even on their Orange Board. Instead, contact HQ via email at service@instructables.com, or PM a member of the Community Team, who can speed things up. Instructables is a special place, and it's you folk, reading this, that help keep it that way.

The World is a Complicated Place: "Eat whale and save the planet" - Norwegian lobby

This strikes me as laughable, but at least the issue is being properly framed. "Eat whale and save the planet" - Norwegian lobbyBy Alister Doyle, Environment CorrespondentOSLO (Reuters) - Eat a whale and save the planet, a Norwegian pro-whaling lobby said on Monday of a study showing that harpooning the giant mammals is less damaging to the climate than farming livestock.Environmental group Greenpeace dismissed the survey, saying almost every kind of food was more climate friendly than meat. The survey, focused on whale boats' fuel use, showed that a kilo (2.2 lbs) of whale meat represented just 1.9 kilo (4.2 lbs) of greenhouse gases against 15.8 for beef, 6.4 for pork and 4.6 for chicken."Basically it turns out that the best thing you can do for the planet is to eat whale meat compared to other types of meat," said Rune Froevik of the High North Alliance, which represents the interests of coastal communities in the Arctic."Greenhouse gas emissions caused by one meal of beef are the equivalent of eight meals of whale meat," the study said. The Norwegian-based Alliance said it was the first to measure the "carbon footprint" of whaling. Fish and seafood was comparable to whale meat with relatively low emissions.Norway and Japan, the two main whaling nations, are seeking new arguments to promote whale meat after years of condemnation from anti-whaling nations for breaking with a 1986 moratorium on all hunts meant to save many whale species from extinction.Oslo says, for instance, that the small minke whales it hunts are plentiful in the North Atlantic and that a 2008 Norwegian quota of 1,052 animals will not harm stocks. The meat is eaten mostly as steaks or in stews

How do you like your meats?

How do you prefer your meats cooked? I like any kind of meat, including fish well done, sometimes to the point of drying it out a little. It's not the taste to me that I don't like about not completely cooked food. It's not some worry about bacteria or anything either. I just don't like the texture that you get, especially with fish and eggs.

Talking Meat Thermometer - Circuit wizard help

Hi everyone  I am doing a project in university and i wanted to make a talking thermometer which told a blind person what temperature the meat was.  At the very best i wanted it to have different functions for chicken, beef and pork. (So they can cook a medium steak and then a safe temperature for chicken, although the temp for chicken and pork is above that of a beef so maybe i can fit it into one chip. i dunno) I have to make the PCB myself so i was just looking for any help on how i may do it (maybe a mix of a home made pcb and arduino) Any any tips or advice i may need  Thanks  Michael

Could someone give me information and advice on vegetarianism?

I would like some advice on vegetarianism. Could someone give me a pro and con on veg diet compared to a meat diet, with vegetarianism can one achieve the right amount of proteins and minerals for the body without vitamins or supplements? Is it healthy, or healthier then a meat diet? Can the same effect be caused on a "meatless Monday" diet of food. And does it fit for me; I'm 6 foot, 195 pounds, 15 years old, very active(running, basketball, swimming). Just interested on the health effects it could cause.

Halloweed-themed meatloafy bacony goodness, "The Hand of Mummy"

Hello folks. I just made my first food instructable and would love to have some input from the community. https://www.instructables.com/id/Halloween-Food-The-Hand-Of-Mummy/ Pictured below is the Hand in its uncooked and (failed)cooked state. Pic quality kind of sucks (Inebriation+photography seldom works very well), but I'm sure you'll understand what the name stands for. Even though the cooked hand looks more like a trilobite, it's still delicious. Further research has yielded better results with keeping the shape intact.

Do you cook mostly or all vegetarian food? What are your tips for staying balanced?

Was anyone else raised eating meat, then switched to mostly or all vegetarian cooking? Any tips for how to shop, filling meals, and how to avoid eating too much starch and sugar (pasta & fruit)? I'm thinking about limiting how much meat I eat, but I'm curious how to switch out of a meat-and-potatoes model I'm accustomed to from childhood. I love a good salad, have an enthusiastic passion for bean dishes, and have access to good vegetables. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

How do I interface to an old digital meat thermometer probe? It has a stem with a wire and a mini-plug on the end?

The stem is stuck into the meat and is left in the oven. The wire is then brought out of the oven and connected to the display. I would like to replace the display with an AVR micrprocessor, but I do not know, or how to find out, what kind of signal is at the end of the plug. Has anyone played around with these and can share their experience?

Extrusion plate in CAD

I have an idea that requires either machining abilities/tool access or CAD experience. A while ago, I found out something that was apparently common knowledge. Meat grinders with their blades removed can be used to extrude spaghetti. So I decided to look for additional pasta extruder plates for different noodles. There are no pasta extruder plates for standard meat grinders. You can, however, buy a glorified grinder and accessory plates or a dedicated pasta machine for top dollar. The marketted pasta makers at their very cores are the same as the meat grinders with the right plates installed. Obviously pasta dies/plates for meat grinders are intentionally not produced. The closest I could come was a garage sale extruder that looks like a plastic grinder with three dies. Big surprise, it doesnt work. But I modified a plate so it sort of works for a grinder. This worked as proof of concept. Would anyone be interested in helping to design CAD files to print pasta dies on Shapeways based on proper pasta dies? I don't know much about CAD, but it looks easier than the designs created by some folks on here. Basically disks with a dimple for alignment and specially shaped holes. admittedly, the hole depths would be the complicated part. Let me know what you think.

Does anyone know how to get the odor out of a freezer that had meat spoil in it during a power outage?

Our freezer was without power and we didn't realize it. When it was discovered all of the meat in it had spoiled. The freezer now has a foul odor that we can't get out. We have tried all purpose cleaners, baking soda and left it open for a long period of time. It still smells. Any suggestions?
