Becausewecan table for Penny Arcade

Our friends over at Becausewecan just built an awesome Twisp and Catsby conference table with wood and resin inlays for the folks at Penny Arcade. They did a great job - it even glows1 in the dark! Check out the making-of video here: 1 I'm totally taking credit for that one - last time we visited they were doing resin-pouring tests, and I passed along info on glow in the dark pigment powder. We got a sample from TAP plastics last Maker Faire, and this seemed an excellent use!

What happened to my penny?!

When I used my newly made wind shield/stand for my alcohol fuel penny stove, the penny was deformed. I was using denatured alcohol for fuel and it was burning well. After it completed my test (boiled a cup of water before it ran out of fuel and without blowing out in the wind) and I was taking it apart to see how well it stood up to the new conditions I noticed that the once shiny penny had been completely deformed. I was wondering if anyone knew how or why this happened.

Does heating a sodium hydroxide solution create fumes?

I want to do the chemistry trick where you turn pennies into a silver and gold color. I am looking to do this by heating a sodium hydroxide solution with zinc metal and then adding pennies. I just need to know if I can do this in my garage on my hotplate or if I should do it outside because of fumes. Thanks :)

Penny model paper planes

In years past I had some printable model paper airplanes that looked like real planes, were aerodynamically shaped, had a penny in the nose for weight, and glided quite well. I have lost the folder in moving classrooms, and I can't seem to find them using google. Has anyone ever heard of these, and have a possible source? My favorite one was an older MIG.

Why can't I get my voltaic pile (penny battery) to work? Answered

I've been attempting to make a battery using the various instructables (https://www.instructables.com/id/Penny-and-Nickel-Battery/), but I can't get anything to register on the multimeter. I purchased sheet aluminum from the hardware store, and that doesn't work. I even purchased CuSO4, to see if that would help, but it still doesn't work! I follow the directions exactly, is there something else that I've been missing?

What is the value of a coin that has been struck offcenter?

I have a number of pennys that have all been mis-struck. One is a coin blank, two have been hit almost half off the coin, and one has the reverse of another coin pressed into it's obverse side. I know that the exact value can't be determined without seeing the actual coin but I was wondering if they could be worth anything more than a dollar or two.

While doing electrolysis on some pennies, (Pence?) I noticed a copper coating on my + copper lead?

Is there something special about this? Also, Is this a form of electroplating? I doused some pennies in vinegar for about a week+ and tried this. On a thinner, magnet wire lead, (copper +) it had what I beleive is a dark green copper salt, that burned blue. Can anyone Identify this? Also, I changed the diameter of the lead, to about 1/16 - 1/8 (Copper lead, +) and It seemed like that lead was powder coated with copper. Is there a reason it would not be a copper salt? The other was coated with what I think is Zinc.

The sound of a bad penny - Finding counterfeit coins by sound

Acoustic method could quickly catch counterfeit coins. You might assume that counterfeiters only bother with high-value bank notes, but there is a chance that some of the coins jangling around in your pocket right now are fake. If Mototsugu Suzuki gets his way, it may be that jangling that gives them away.Suzuki, a researcher at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Criminal Investigation Laboratory in Japan, has developed a way of examining coins based on the sound they make.In Suzuki's method, coins slide down a slope and then fall onto a brass block. The sound they make on impact is relayed via a microphone to a computer.Although the human ear cannot usually tell the difference between real and fake, a computer can. Genuine 500-yen coins showed four distinctive peaks of natural resonance frequencies in the 5-20 kilohertz range. This was not the case for fakes; some fakes produced only three peaks, while others showed four but at different frequencies to genuine coins. In addition to helping detect counterfeits, the sound data could be used to build up a database of fake coins, suggests Suzuki. This might help law enforcement officers to prove how many coins one counterfeit operation is responsible for. This would make for an awesome Instructable! Start with these two Instructables and get dropping pennies! https://www.instructables.com/id/Build-a-dsPIC-Oscilloscope-and-Spectrum-Analyzer-/https://www.instructables.com/id/Low-speed-AVR-oscilloscope/

How do i keep my pretty polished pennies pristine from precipitation?

Heya, experts! Short version: freshly polished pennies need to be able to remain bright and shiny after being left out in the rain for one night. Explanation:  We celebrate virtually every holiday in our family, and tomorrow is St Patricks's Day.  It's become a tradition for the kids to "discover" a trail of brightly shined pennies that lead out to some freshly planted shamrocks and other new plants, with a few brightly polished gold dollars underneath.  It's nothing grand, but it's fun to sneak out to plant a little evidence in the garden. This year will see heavy rain and general unpleasantness (SF Bay Area), and every year the pennies that get some water exposure will have dark spots where the water sat.  Lately it seems that i've made some bad calls on impromptu fixes, so i'm putting my question out to the more knowledgeable community here.  Would a little WD40 likely keep tonight's heavy rains from spotting the coins?  Does anyone have any suggestions that would probably work better? Any thoughts our ideas would be appreciated, if just to keep silly little traditions going.  ;-) Cheers!  - A Dad Who's About To Get His Yearly Thumb Blister From Polishing Pennies With A Jewelry Cloth

Coin Collectors

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone here collected coins. My brother, and my dad, and I all collect coins as a side hobby. What coins do you collect? What types do you have, and the oldest ones? I have many books for nickels, dimes, and pennies. I just love the feeling when I can open up the book and find it full! My brother and I just bought some old Indian Head pennies, as well as some Steel Pennies from 1943. (During WWII) I have many foregin coins, as well as about 20 Susan B. Anthony's. I have about 10 Sacajawea coins, and a few Kennedy Half-Dollars. I just love the feeling of the profit that will be made in the future. Today I collected about 6 brand new 2007 Pennies, and took them out of circulation. Share your tips, tricks, and cool places to find your coins! As well as your coin collections!

BEEZID.COM...scam, or genius

Well, It's both. This is a new website that works like ebay, but all of the items are BRAND NEW and cost only pennies on the dollar. How the **** could this possibly work? Well the guy who made this website is probablly already a rich genius. Cars sold for a few hundred dollars, tv's for only $100, and brand new ipods for merely $50. Here's how it works. Items start at a penny and every bid brings it up another penny, but everybody that bids PAYS a dollar for their bid. so do the math. A car is sold for $500, which means 50,000 bids...so the guy gets $50,500 for a $20,000 car, but the winner only pays $500. This website is engenius for the creator, but be careful. You could be spending hundreds of dollars and never win anything...so keep in mind...all of the money has to come from somewhere. And in this case its coming from all the people who bid and lost the auction.

Lit bubble columns/bubble wall

I've been looking at these awesome bubble columns that are so wretchedly expensive and dying to get one for my office. Note, I am sure they are worth every penny, but I have few pennies. For the link-phobic, a bubble column is a clear tube several feet tall with an aerator making bubbles and multi-coloured lights from beneath the column. Some columns are interactive and others have plastic fishies or balls that sail around inside.  There is also a space-saving "bubble wall" that only runs 1L of water.  Anyone even have a clue as to where to start? No pics, sorry, I didn't want to pull them off the website.

coin modifying laws?

So my friends and I are planning to sell, well...things (I'm not going to give out any details as of now, later) that incorporate small round metal disks. now in all of our prototypes weve used coins for our purposes and they work great. but for what we make we need to cut and sand coins in different ways. and my friends always tell me "its illegal to change money in any way." But I've heard that its only illegal to modify money to change or duplicate the amount its worth - like making a penny into a dime is illegal but making a penny pac man figure isnt. can anyone clarify this for me? I'm fine doing illegal things like modifying coins for personal use but if were going to sell these I want to be a little more clear as to what is going on.

Today Has Been Strange...

Anyone else notice? It started small, then got huge. First, my friend's cell phone somehow got from his pocket to into his backpack, without being touched. My other friend (when changing for PE/weights) noticed he had been walking all day with an ipod cord in his shoe. I found a penny on the ground, put it in my pocket, then it somehow turned into seven pennies when I put my hand back in a minute later. The grand finally, I get a call from mom telling me my neighbor's lung collapsed and to get over there ASAP. Mazee was frantic, everyone was frantic, the door was locked, I stepped in dog poo, the fire truck came, couldn't make it up the long, steep, driveway. The ambulance came, was able to make it up, and took her to the hospital. There, my day all in a nutshell.
