realistic model water?

I have a model PT boat 109 ( in 1/72 scale) and the propellers are broken. I figure the best way to do this is to just throw the boat in a diorama scene, so it is at the waterline. Can anyone help, because I have no idea how to do the water, and i was wondering if there was any realistic water things that I can make at home, or buy for pretty cheap.

cod liver

Had a fine can of cod liver in its own oil. Found it to be quite nice and mild in taste and in texture. I spread it on crackers but it made me wonder if there were any other good ways of making snacks and or other foods using the liver. Does any one else know of other ways to use the cod liver and the oil? Thanks.

Strange format numbers in Illustratore CC "123 123 pt"? Answered

Given: Illustrator CC, worked fine, and suddenly crashed formats numbers in the input fields. It became something about 123 123 pt. i.e. there is a space instead of commas when entering numbers. The factory default settings had reset, in the regional settings like everything is in order, ID is operating normally. Only Illustrator behaves odd. Maybe i need to delete some configuration files? All advices are welcome...

Contest deadlines in official rules

Hi, As I recently have started participating and judging in contests, there's a little thing I noticed and would like to point out. More often than not, the deadline section of contests states something like this: ...no later than 11:59 p.m. PT on October 20, 2014 /7:59am GMT on October 20, 2014 What I'd like to point out, is that 11:59 PT is the next, not the same day in UTC, therefore it should be: ...no later than 11:59 p.m. PT on October 20, 2014 /7:59am GMT on October 21, 2014 Wouldn't even bother you with this, but it is recurring, so why not get it in tact? Also, fix the deadline dates in leatherworking contest rules, they're a bit mixed up. One more thing is the timer contests have. It obviously runs using local time of the person looking at it, it's ok for a person in PT, but for me it writes that the contest is closed 10 hours before it actually is. Not a big deal, since it's still possible to enter it during that period, just something to think about.

Advice on microcontroller selection

Hello I am a newbie to the world of microcontrollers and would be really grateful for some advice about choosing one. Basically, I’m doing a final year university engineering project that requires an MCU to take a number of analogue inputs, do some processing, and spit out an analogue output that will drive a loudspeaker. My supervisor has recommended looking at the Philips LPC2148 and associated development kits (http://www.olimex.com/dev/lpc-h2148.html) because it is cheap and looks able to fulfil the following requirements: I/O – three analogue inputs (so 3 ADCs), 3 digital inputs (two servos and a bus for programming the controller), and one analogue output (requiring a DAC either built into the development board, or one I could connect on an add-on board) Speed – a program size of about 500 floating pt operations, processing samples at a rate of up to 400/second, hence of the order 200,000 floating pt operations per second. I think the LPC2148 uses fixed pt arithmetic so would need to perform the equivalent of this in fixed pt. Support – in place debugging support would be desirable; ability to be run on Windows; overall hardware and software cost of £100 or less. Does this chip and its development tools look up to the job? If not, would you recommend an alternative? Are there any other major criteria I’m neglecting in the process of selecting a MCU? Many thanks, Sam

Paper Airplane Challenge 1 (Closed)

This contest has been specifically drawn up for contenders of my previous contests, whom expressed interest in participating in further competitions. (However, it is by no means exclusive to them, anyone can enter!) Having already broken from tradition in name, I have decided to specify point values for the individual requirements too. The aim of this challenge is to design a paper airplane or family of paper airplanes that can fulfill three tasks. Requirements: 1. Aircraft Requirements: • Ability to: (A) fly at least 30 feet; (B) perform at least one full loop, wingover and/or half Cuban eight and fly a further 15 feet; and (C) carry at least four 100mg toothpicks (20 pts each; 60 pts total) • Up to three differently configured variants can be submitted to fill the A, B and C capabilities. Between variants there must be at least 40% commonality in construction (2 of 5 steps are identical). (5 pts) • Durability in each airframe to fly at least 20 flights (5 pts) • Use of less than 15 inches (0.381 meters) of tape in the construction of all aircraft  (5 pts) • Use of less than 6 pieces of 8.5 by 11 inch (A4) paper in the construction of all aircraft (5 pts) • Aircraft must be named (if there are multiple variations, identify each distinctly with names and/or designations) (5 pts) (This totals to 85 points possible for the aircraft.) 2. Instructable Requirements: • 1 page (not the intro page) strictly devoted to materials required in construction (4 pts) • 1 page explaining how to fly the aircraft (if there are multiple variants, illustrate how to fly each if necessary) (4 pts) • The instructables’ license(s) must be: "Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike (by-nc-sa)". Entries not wholly original must honor licensing agreements associated with the original publisher(s). (4 pts) • This sentence and link must be displayed on your entry's intro page: "This instructable is an entry in Paper Airplane Challenge 1." (3 pts) (This totals to 15 points possible for the aircraft’s instructable; 100 points possible for the entry as a whole.) Prizes: For this contest I will award the publishers of the top 3 paper airplane instructables* one patch each. Each patch will feature its respective aircraft. The first place winner will also receive one 1 year Instructables.com Pro membership. The second place winner will also receive two 3-month Instructables.com Pro memberships. The third place winner will also receive one 3-month Instructables.com Pro membership. Prize Distribution: 1st Place: 1 Patch One Instructables 1 Year Pro Membership 2nd Place: 1 Patch 2 Instructables 3 Month Pro Memberships 3rd Place: 1 Patch 1 Instructables 3 Month Pro Membership Bonuses: An extra 3 month Pro membership will be awarded to the designer of the most original, successful design. This bonus prize is not subject to the distribution limit below, and therefore, the top 3 contenders remain eligible to win. *Multiple entries are allowed. To keep the distribution of patches wide however, each contender can only win one prize. How to Enter: To enter this contest, you must send me a private message entitled “Challenge Entry Airplane [Your Member Name Here]” with your instructables’ URL(s) included. I will then put the link and author's name onto a list on this topic below, under "Entries". Judging: I will judge entries based on aircraft performance and the quality and presentation of its instructable. Aircraft will be analysed and scored based on the requirements and whether or not they have been met. The contest begins Friday, June 8, 2012 and ends Friday, July 13, 2012 July 27, 2012. Entries must be published between these two dates. From July 13 27 to July 16 30, I will be judging all entries. I will announce the winners of the contest on Tuesday, July 17 , 2012 July 31, 2012 and issue them their prizes Wednesday, July 18, 2012 August 1, 2012. Entries: bramblebee100: The Daredevil papercrafter408: The Delta-Fighter Results: First Place (Tie): bramblebee100: The Daredevil papercrafter408: The Delta-Fighter

Laptop Cooling Question

I'm using a laptop-sized, vented, inverted vegetable tray to keep the laptop cool. It's quite effective even without any fans in this scorching heat. I added a CPU fan underneath ( 12 V, 0.42 A), and ran it off a USB cable from the laptop. The air is quite nice, but one thing I'm a bit worried is, when I touch the top of the laptop, it slightly vibrates constantly due to the fan underneath. Is that dangerous for the laptop? I'm planning to add another fan beneath the hard disk. The one I have now, is under the laptop's CPU fan. Another thing I would like to know is that, is it okay to run two fans of 042 A each, from two USB ports? Each USB port can supply 0.5 A max current. Running one fan off each port should be okay? But, today, the temperature was quite high in the afternoon, nearly 50 degrees! I'm thinking of buyin a readymade laptop cooler. Trying to construct a battery powered usb hub. Will this work??

Let me start of by saying that I suck at electronics and to tell me to build something from scratch would completely miss the point of why I am asking this :P What I want to do is use readymade components to combine into a portable usb hub. I want it to be highly customizable and powerful enough to power several usb devices at once. Such as powering several usb speakers, recharging a phone and so on for extended periods of time. And it has to be as energy efficient as possible without costing a gazillion bucks. If I was not at all worried about wasting power I would have solved it already :P Here are the parts I have picked out. 1. 12V Rechargeable Li-on Battery 9800mAH http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12V-Rechargeable-Li-on-Battery-9800mAH-Portable-4-CCTV-/280640849302?pt=US_Batteries&hash;=item41577f8596#ht_4008wt_804 2. Hobbywing UBEC-8A  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hobbywing-UBEC-8A-8A-UBEC-RC-model-/250806232080?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash;=item3a65376410#ht_2324wt_785  3. Powered 7-Port Usb hub http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-7-Port-HUB-Powered-AC-Adapter-Cable-High-Speed-/280620339173?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash;=item4156468fe5#ht_4224wt_804 I hope someone can help me out with confirming that my setup would work. What hardware can I use to program an AVR?

Is it possible to add a 3.5mm headphone jack to a pair of antique crystal radio headphones? Answered

I am looking to purchase a pair of antique headphones, and possibly fix them up to work like a new pair of headphones.  For example, would it be possible to manipulate these headphones, and add a 3.5mm headphone jack to them? http://cgi.ebay.com/Frost-Fones-162-1000-early-crystal-radio-headphones-/120647686331?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item1c172998bb Thanks for your help.

Green Electronics contest closing date/time clarification

Hello! I'd just appreciate some clarification on the entry submission closing date/time for the Green Electronics contest (hopefully I'm not missing something obvious). On the contests main page, it says "Closes Midnight May 31, 2014" but in the fine print in the contest (under "View Entries" and "Official Rules") it says "Contest closes for entries at 11:59pm PT, May 30, 2014." Shouldn't this be May 31 instead? For other contests, the close date is the same date as listed on the contests main page -- for example, the Made By Bees contest says it "Closes midnight June 30, 2014," and if you view the fine print in the contest it says "Contest closes for entries at 11:59pm PT, June 30, 2014." So, it looks like there may be a mistake for the listed closing date/time for the Green Electronics contest, but I could be just misunderstanding something, and I just want to make sure I know the exact closing date (since I may be cutting it close due to traveling). Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Food Science Challenge closed, even though it's not midnight on May 7th yet??

To whom it may concern: The official rules of the Food Science challenge state that "Entries for the Contest must be received by Sponsor by no later than 11:59 p.m. PT May 7". However, I am unable to enter my instructable even though it isn't midnight yet!! It is currently about 8:30 p.m. PT, so I should still have 3.5 hours left to submit my instructable. I've entered instructables last-minute for contests like this before and I haven't ever had any issues, so why is it different this time?  Could somebody please let me know if I'm missing something, and if not how should I go about rectifying this issue and getting my entry in on time? I'll also be sending this to info@instructables.com, but that email takes several days to be answered so does anyone have a better method of getting in contact with Instructables staff quickly and easily? Thanks in advance,  Chris

Enclosure for LED bar graph

I just bought an LED bar graph for my project. I'm looking for an enclosure that I can install this bar graph. Choosing an Arduino compatible board

Hey everyone. I'm very new to microcontrollers. I've never dealt with them but I do know how to program. I'm interested in creating a wall-avoiding RC truck on a tight budget. I'm mostly going to be following this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/RC-Car-to-Robot/ as well as this one https://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-RC-car-for-beginners-Android-control-over-/?ALLSTEPS I'm thinking about getting this arduino-compatible board.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tosduino-MEGA2560-R3-Board-Arduino-compatible-/330947766756?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash;=item4d0e0629e4 This is a motor module I'm looking at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/L298N-DC-Stepper-Motor-Driver-Controller-Module-Robot-Dual-H-Bridge-For-Arduino-/370966436323?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item565f5299e3 I'm wondering if anyone has experience with arduino-compatible boards or maybe even tosduino specifically. Are they fairly reliable? Is this motor module something that could work? Why is it only $4 while the motor shield for arduino is $20 - $30. I really have no idea as I would just be following tutorials to get my feet wet in the arduino world. Thanks, BlueShorts
