What is this mystery electronic component? Answered

I bought an assortment of components: resistors, diodes, capacitors, all mixed together on about a meter of cut tape from a reel for an automatic PCB populating machine. The original reel was marked as surplus from DEC and looks to be about 20 years old. One of the components is this black cylinder, like a very fat resistor, about 5 mm long and 3mm diameter. No resistance or diode action. Brittle and crack off with a pliers like ferrite. They do not melt or burn with a candle flame. The wire lead goes straight through and out the other side. Can be picked up by a magnet, but are not themselves magnets. They have no markings of any kind, but have shiny flecks. Are they some kind of magnetic tape position marker to tell the insertion machine what component is next? Say like a binary code?

Why can't you post a response to the best answer? Answered

I always choose my best answer, then wan't to say thanks or something and I have to unmark, respond, then remark, why is this.

Should there be an automatic answer function? Answered

I get annoyed every time a see an answered question left unmarked, is there any way the computer could automatically mark the question as answered after a week? That would be helpful for sorting out people that need help from people that are lazy.

Bicycle accident is the frame okay? Answered

I struck basically struck a curb (an unmarked road island really) going 17 mph roughly and blew out my front rim. I broke a collar bone because of the accident. Anyways I was wondering if the frame is okay I looked at it and there was no visible cracks anywhere. Its a cheap Schwinn frame and it got me wondering if it would be safe to put a new rim on and go. BTW this is a gas powered motorized bicycle not the cheap ones as shown BEFORE the crash.

Wattage of speaker? Answered

Hello, I have a variety of speaker that I would like to use in a project that I am currently working on, but I have found that there is oftentimes no information about my speakers on the internet, mainly due to the fact that I stole them from broken electronics. This makes things hard because I need to know the wattage of the speakers, but would prefer not breaking them to find out, especially since most of the time I only have one of those speakers. Basically, how can I figure out the maximum amount of power that can go into an unmarked speaker.

Which Capacitance Meter Should I Buy?

I'm interested in testing some electrolytic capacitors I have, as well as some unmarked ceramic disc capacitors.  Which one of these would work best for me? Would this hvac one work? http://www.amazon.com/Elenco-CM1555-Digital-Capacitance-Meter/dp/B0002HDTDQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid;=1365901716&sr;=8-1&keywords;=capacitance+meter http://www.amazon.com/Capacitor-Capacitance-Meter-Tester-20mf--200pf/dp/B007MHBCFG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid;=1365901716&sr;=8-3&keywords;=capacitance+meter Thanks!

LED Board Control

Hi there.  I salvaged 2 boards of LEDs from an old LED can at work.  They were previously DMX, and have an array of red, green, and blue LEDs.  There are four leads coming from the board, +, -, a dashed line, and an unmarked line.  I am looking to integrate these with another project, but am unsure how to go about finding how to control them electrically.  I was thinking it might be digitally controlled right on the board, but I see no IC.   All I am looking to do is figure out where voltage needs to be applied in order to have different RGB levels.  If I helps, the number printed on the board is FT140PCB GS.  I am able to attach an image if that would be helpful. Any ideas of how to go about this?  Thanks a lot, anything would help!

Computer Circuit Board Identification request

Here are a few pictures of two boards I have (I am not sure how old they are, but they either came from my old 8088/8086, 286, 386, or my PS2 (all long gone now). What I need to know is what they are/were and are there any specs out there (I can't seem to locate any): one has a port on the side, one does not. The one without the port has a T.I. chip that looks like an IR programmable PROM with PGM=12.5 v on it. There is also a crystal with 24.000 stamped on it. The other one it probably an old video card but it has only 4 resistors on it and one resistor bank, plus four capacitors, and two ic's. One is labeled: 74LS245N ( Octal Bus Transmitter/Receiver designed for 8-line asynchronous 2-way data communication between data buses ), the larger IC is an unmarked 40 pin device. I tried for half an hour to get half decent pictures of them, sorry for the quality.

Understanding/Interpreting a firmware update

Hi, I'll try to break this down as simply as I can, because there are bits I barely understand myself. Here's what I've got physically: Orca electronic speed control (ESC) for my RC car (based on unknown, unmarked MCU) Orca USB Link for updating firmware on the ESC (USB link is based on Silabs F321) Here's what I've got electronically: I've got a .bin file in my iMac that is the latest update for the ESC and the Orca update software, that acts as the link between the devices Here's what I've already done: I already have a firm grasp on loading new firmware on to the ESC Here's what I want to do: I'd like to be able to toy around with the data in the .bin file, but I honestly have no idea of how to interpret the data contained therein. I've played with it in a few hex editing programs and got a few words to appear in something approaching English, but nothing concrete. I guess the basic problem is understanding what "language" this was written in. (I'm not even sure if it's 8 or 32 bit) I think after that's figured out, I can work backwards from there. Ultimately, I'd like to understand how all of this works and how the MCU interprets the information and signals it's being fed. Any thoughts you can offer on the subject would be appreciated. Here's a kink to the firmware update, should you choose to look at it. Thanks! http://www.orcarc.com/download/ORCAQ%20ver2.1%20111125A.BIN

rfid chip in food

I have had some problems with illegal rfid chipping by the avalon station los angeles county sheriffs. i have had to throw away alot of my belongings not knowing which item or items were chipped. this rfid frequency number was given to a motorcycle gang on the mainland ( i live on santa catalina island off the coast of southern california).........and this gang attacked and tried to murder me across state lines when i went on a trip to northern california/oregon.............these guys stalked and attempted to kill me at least 15-20 times during an eight month terrifying ordeal!  there are some "bad cops" on the force that did not want me to return to the island; as i was going to be a major figure in some lawsuits that are being prepared at this moment. gang officer david v mertens played hardball with a very innocent little resort town of avalon (google his name). he tried to tell the world that on the "misty" island of catalina that there were gangs here on the island.....which is hogwash as everybody in this little community knows everybody else; sometimes too much.......it is like having 3000 brothers and sisters! so after his little pr stunt........hey; there is a need for him on the island. he got kicked off of the island as he does not belong in a resort town. i am a person who has lived in the wilderness for the better part of 30 years; and am very hard to locate, capture or worse...........but they tried twice on the island using air assets (one a grey unmarked military helicopter and two days later a little blue and white private airplane)....but to no avail. they came "straight to me" in the canyons and forests of the island and in the forests of oregon and then back again in the forests of lake tahoe...........no one has ever found me like that........especially a bunch of city boys. when they don't capture me we all walk around town as if nothing happened!  my questions are how to detect these chips and destroy them on my backpack, other belongings and even chips that may very well have been inserted into some food i found on the backside of the island just after a sheriffs helicopter had taken off from the remote area. i thought the chopper was putting food in places just in case some of the survivors of a coastguard airplane/helicopter crash found their way to shore; but it might of been meant for me. since returning to the island i saw someone chip my day pack that i left unattended during a mountain run............so as an experiment i went out three days ago and hid the pack  in the local hills,  when i returned home i realized that i had lost my knife out of it's holster.  i go back 30 minutes later to look...........and guess what?........the pack was already gone!  then some sort of personnel folks came back for me; that i saw way down below me in that spot......looking directly at me! i always get hunches to get up and go before anything major is about to happen; which is how i got away from the motorcycle gang and the sheriffs that backed the gang cop. any suggestions you might give me in regards to these issues would be greatly appreciated.  thank you for your time. pack below
