Need arduino help with an idea i have but have no idea where to start? Answered

I'm trying to build a box mounted on a vehicle that will sense an impact and send a email or text message when the impact occurs over wifi and/or cellular. wifi is preferred and cellular is a last choice but both available if possible. I'm new to this so I kinda don't know where to start much less code. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks everyone for all of the responses. Computers by no means are new to me but the code for this I'm lost. I do have access to one wifi network the complete time for this project and during use once complete so arduino I think may be the way to go. To get started I will use a arduino yun with wifi and a two axis accelerometer. I need to sense front, rear or side crashes. I would like to give user specific buttons for changing the sensitivity of the device if possible. If I'm on the wrong track please let me know. Also if anyone could put me on the right start to write or get the code needed I would appreciate any help. Thanks again and hope I haven't taken on too much for a newbie to coding!

Steveastrouk is right though, everything you need is in a basic smartphone. Look into buying used smartphones and writing an app using something like the MIT App Inventor 2. You don't even need service as the wifi still works regardless.

Unless it's connected to one wifi network at all times an arduino is going to be tough to work with. Something like Raspberry Pi or Intel Edison are probably better bets.

As far as sensing you'll need an accelerometer for each axis you want to detect impact in. Unless drops are a concern then 2 axis should be fine. There should be chips with at least 2 axis built in or you can get separate single axis chips.

This chips will give a scaled readout based on the voltage they're running at. You'll need to calibrate the system to prevent false positives by findng the max in each axis while just driving around. Then give give your self a little margin for inconsequential minor impacts and you should be good to go (e.g. if the max x-axis readout was 450 (out of 1023 on arduino analog pins) then set the threashhold at 500 or a little higher and then you should only be capturing meaningful impacts).

For a better understanding and I have decided against cellular! I'm trying to build a box mounted on golf cart that will sense an impact and send a email or text message when the impact occurs over wifi. wifi acces points are everywhere! Thanks for your comments

Thanks

everything you need is in a cheap smartphone you don't need hardware, you need an app

If your unfamiliar with coding and electronics I would suggest starting with smaller projects and building your skill level.

trying to start at the top with something very complex is almost certainly bound to fail.

A couple of sensors namely acclelometer and GPS connected to the Arduino.

You would also need a celluler sheild. Make sure everything is bolted together tightly.

For all of the coding help i would use the Arduino forums.
