Programmable inline switch (or, how to help your houseguests turn off the lights)? Answered

So, after battling with houseguest after houseguest, I've hit my end. Beyond giving them flashlights and nothing more, is there a way to build an inline timer that can be variably set? Something to sit between the switch and light, and I can set it to 10 minutes for some, 20 for others, and always on?

They ALSO sell motion detector light switches that have a LOT of hysteresis leeway, 10-20 minutes or so after motion stops.

I know that in many motels (the less modern ones) they have a timer switch that is variable for turning on the warming lamp in the bathroom. Times can be adjusted between a minute and 2 hours, but it is set by the person turning ON the timer / switch.

You can buy light switches that only stay on for a couple of minutes - they install them in the hallways of blocks of rented flats so that people can find their way to their rooms and not cost the landlord too much. They're a sort of push-button affair - push for on, then it slowly pops out.
