Check out this video on how an inkjet cartridge works. The print head is little more than a holder for the cartridge and a connection point for the data cable to the cartridge. All the signals are coming from the control boards in the printer. The wires to the head only tell which nozzle to fire and you have power going to the heating element in the cartridge.
