My 2cts on the new Featured Instructable system Answered

Hello everyone, it was suggested that I give my thoughts on the current (new) system when an Instructable is Featured.

Recently one of my Instructables was Featured (have a look at my Trebuchet I'ble). I received the standard 'We think your awesome' email... and then... nothing I waited for a snazzy little banner proclaiming to the world that I was featured... I also waited to see my Ible on the front page... After 24 hours I got worried and posted a bug report, where the new feature was explained to me

Where I have the problem is this new three teired system hasn't REALLY been explained in an email or a site update memo.. Perhaps It would be useful to have an opt-in site update email which explains the current features/updates of the website?

Another problem is the email I received says this:
Hi!

Your Instructable "Scout Project: How to build a Trebuchet" was just featured by one of our editors!

Being featured means we think you are awesome. Keep up the great work!

Look for your featured Instructable, within the next 30 minutes, here:

FEATURED

The old style email says:

Hi!

Your Instructable "How to make: Norbert the Cuddly Squid" was just featured by one of our editors!

Look for it on the Instructables homepage within the next 30 minutes. Being featured means we think you are awesome. Keep up the great work!

There isn't very much difference, and when you are unaware of the change, it is a little confusing... maybe the standardised email needs a little tweaking for the new Featured Instructable system?

Thanks alot

Jay

Please can you guys update the featured categories stuff please? I was most confused thismorning when two of my ibles were featured and they never showed up on the front page. Would be nice too if all ibles featured in a section not front page got a banner too (perhaps a slightly different design) to show that it's of good quality.

Hi, Jaye.  New I'bles which get featured at any level do get a banner attached.  But that fix was rolled out more than a week after the new three-level system started.  As a result, there are a few (dozen or so) I'bles that fell between the cracks.  I'm sure Staff will eventually go back and fix them, but there are probably higher priority issues to resolve.

So if mine were featured thismorning they should have banners? Odd. It was this one and this one.

Well, the first one (the paracord hose cleaner) does have a Featured banner, at least on the Browse-recent thumbnails (see page 53).  The second one was published in September 2009, so I'm going to have to go back a long way (24 days was an offset of 1040).  I can't find the older one at all.

I do see that in your member profile, neither of those thumbnails have the featured banner on them (yet?).  Do you recall when you received the "featured" e-mail, or when that e-mail was timestamped?  The servers do a lot of caching and batch-updates, so it may be that your profile page just hasn't been updated.

Both on April 29th. Could have sworn it was more than 4 days ago!

PS the quickest way to fix it would be to feature it properly ;)

The resent changes are much better then what it was. I see it is more organized with the sub categories and they even have a category for Linux (sweet. ) regardless what others think needs to be done this is a step in the right direction.

Personally my two cents are that you deserve a featured banner no matter where you are featured. Any of those three levels needs to ensure you get your banner.

I don't feel that awesome without a cool banner that explains my ible has been featured in the past.

Although I don't completely agree with the new level system of featuring (kelseymh explained it to me) I think we need to atleast have our feature banner!

See, I agree with you there, I think it would be nice to have something visual so  people can identify it as a great I'ble...

I know when I'm searching, if something has the banner, I know that chances are its going to be really easy to understand, with great pictures etc...

Its like a mark of quality in some respects.

I dont really mind one way or another about this new system... I just think it needed to be explained to people to stop confusion, I can't be the only person on the site who it has affected

It would be neat if they made distinguishing featured bars, maybe gold silver and bronze for the various levels of featuring.

Personally I think that would detract... I don't know about you but bronze silver and gold denotes quality... I think it would subtract from the content making it seem perhaps inferior to other Featured i'bles

Plus it would be more work for the guys in the office

Well once it's programmed, it's just a matter of which box the feature team member checks, but I have no idea how hard the programming would be, not my forte.

But I'll respectfully disagree with you on the gold silver bronze idea. ;-)

Why not banners that say "Great", "Featured" and "Front Page"?

That could work... I just wasn't particularily keen with something visual that (albeit io a subconcious level) denotes quality such as bronze silver and gold...

Well, now this is interesting.  Some time today, around lunchtime, a quick fix to the software was pushed out.  It is now the case that on the "Recent Instructables" page, the Featured banner is applied to every level of featuring (look at the Arduino project, for example).

However, when I go to those users' profiles, the I'bles in question do not have the Featured banner.  I suspect this means they are experimenting to make sure the code works properly before deploying the whole thing.

I don't know how Staff implemented this change.  It may be that the code they use to assign the "Featured" state was changed to set the flag for the banner; in that case, only newly Featured will see the effect.

That will mean that someone there has to go through and (probably by hand) reprocess those I'bles which got featured after the new three-state rollout, but before this mod.  Given that the whole site is run by less than a dozen people, that may not be as high a priority as some other things.

That would be very nice and it would solve the problem right away.

I like it, it's fair, it fits the new system perfectly and is easy to understand.

Thank you for putting this up, Biggsy!  I'm fairly confident Eric and the Staff will have read it.  There may or may not be a response right away (and if there isn't I might just ping 'em myself, since I'm the one who suggested you writ this).

Not a problem... I can understand the need for feedback... I just hope it helps...

As I said, it may be handy to have an opt in email, where members can choose if aswell as the general newsletter, they get an occasional website update email where new features or options are explained or are atleast pointed out... as, well I generally don't play arround on the forums and may miss something that is posted on here

A number of us have been asking about this.  About a month ago, they set up a "read-only" forum called "Site Updates" for exactly this purpose.  I think you can use the existing RSS feature to get updates when there are new postings.  I don't use RSS myself, so I don't know that for sure.

yes, but what I'm saying is... as someone who generally doesnt venture into the forums... it would be very easy to miss.. In an opt in email system people don't have an excuse if they don't know about an update because theywhere given a chance to know when the site was going to be updated, and what the updates are etc..

Sure.  My suggestion was that the existing subscription method (RSS) is an opt-in system.  Since the update announcements are kept contained in a dedicated and read-only forum (so you don't have to deal with random comments), it serves exactly the purpose you're suggesting.

You have a point there... regardless of my Idea... I still think that perhaps the emails need to be tweaked :)
