How do I dub copyrighted VHS tapes to DVD's? Answered

I have educational VHS tapes that have copyright protection somehow encoded on the tapes. I want to dub these to DVDs to reduce my media storage for home resource use. I understand that the law allows one copy to be made if not selling it. But I don't know how to get past the encoded protection. I have a dubbing machine.

Torrenting a movie you own (Legality)? Answered

So, i have been wondering this for a while now, and thought to ask here before I did something stupid and got the feds at my door :) Is it legal to torrent a movie I own? For example, I have an old copy of the Incredibles, but since it was released in 2004, the movie has seen its fair share of use, and at the moment is too scratched to be played (Unfortunately I did not rip a backup...).  So under these circumstances, would it be legal to torrent the movie file, as I have the actual, physical disk of the movie? What about VHS tapes (got my fair share of those). Getting these on my computer would just be some $70 software/recording equipment... it would be faster and cheaper to download them instead of getting shoddy quality off of a 15 year old VHS.  What about for a disc that has been solen? We had our car broken into at one point, and got some 10 DVDs stolen out of it (around 8 of which didnt have a backup)... I would like to be able to get those back, legally, without having to spend $150 re-buying movies already purchased...

VHS Camcorder, Overhead projector, Boomboxes, and some other stuff.

Hey, I recently contacted my school (I'm in 9h grade) asking if they had any old equipment i could have, and they said yes. I have decided that i would *only* take 2 overhead projectors (you put a 'transparent sheet on, and projects) 3-4 boomboxes, and most importantly, a VHS camcorder. I just couldn't let that camcorder go to waste, so i decided i would take it, but now I'm wondering, what can i do with it? Also, for the overhead projectors, any ideas what i could use them for? I know, i can get the mirrors/lenses/bulbs, and fan and everything in them, but is there anything i could use them for (i know about LCD overhead projector, anything else?)

Should I get my tape classic movies on dvd, or get a vhs player?

I have a lot of classic movies: Mary Poppins, Old Yeller, etc. The only problem is... they're on tapes. I have an old tv that has a vhs player built-in, but the screen is tiny. I am getting a new tv and dvd player and I was wondering if you had any tips. Here are the options I have thought of: 1. Get a dvd/vhs player http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=vhs+player 2. Use my old tv 3. Get all the movies on dvd 4. Camcorder Restoration?

So I have this old VHS camcorder that is sitting around my house. I want to make it into a decent filmmaking camera. however, I think the imager is bad, and the industry has moved away from VHS. So what I want to do is replace the bad Imager with a HD Imager, maybe a 35mm digital Imager. I also want to replace the VHS deck with a removable portable hard drive, set up to record in an industry standard file format. How much do you think this would cost? Can I be directed to a store that has these parts? Any other thoughts?

My VCR has only RCA-composite video, but S-Video is possible through an old high-quality VHS camera. Would I need to get a new video card, or just a converter for RCA-USB? Low-budget recommendations would be appreciated.

Battery Wiring?

I have new Li-ion batteries for my mac but i wasn't completely sure on how to wire it up to the old circuitry. I know that "vg" is the ground and the "vp" is the positive. I am assuming "vl" goes to the wire "vl" i dont know what that is thought.  But there is a "vh" spot on the new battery but on the old circuitry there was no wire going to there? Do I solder that wire there? There is also two very thin wires labeled ntc, i can not find a spot on the old circuitry for that is it necessary?

Hello! I'm looking for something to recycle into a shoe rack I'm making, any ideas?

I love the idea of using material that would otherwise be thrown away, and it's cheaper :). I need a fairly rigid area of about 25x28cm for the "shelves". The material will be in view, so it would be awesome if it looked interesting. The actual structure of the rack will probably be MDF, so I know for sure it will not fall apart. Plan B is using VHS tapes for the "structure" (vertical parts) and wood for the shelves, but that would probably be harder to pull off :)

Half Inch CRT Monitror

I was tearing apart an old VHS camera and decided to rip the LCD out of the viewfinder. Much to my suprise I find a CRT monitor not a LCD! This screen is about 1/2 inch. It has a 5 pin connector that leads to the motherboard and a chip on the bottom that says A118121. Obviously two of the conections would be V+ and ground, but what about the other three? I would like to turn this into a composite or VGA compatible screen (maybe even a crazy tiny oscilloscope) but I need some help. Any suggestions or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Can I Repair These Video Cameras!

I've got a Magnavox Video Escort and a JVC Compact VHS. Both cameras are dumpster finds. Neither work and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest tests/repairs or whatnot to get them to work. I realize these cameras were tossed because they don't work but sometimes things get thrown away because the owners don't want to take the time to find out WHY they don't work. The Escort is utterly inert. I haven't got a way to recharge the battery, assuming that it would if I did and an adaptor I know works has no effect on this camera. The JVC works but the view finder remains black.

link to parts in 'ble for easier search and categorisation

Hello fab fun instructable people, I would like to see instructables linked to their basic ingredients. This way, when I englishly search for vhs and get 1.5 pages of hits that don't have anything to do with vhs's, and then search for vcr and get over 5 pages of hits, I can instead... go to a page, and 1) look at the main basic ingredients that instructables are based upon, 2) reading through them at my leisure, and 3) can think up a new 'ble that has not been done before. Lets say this another way. Looking up at the menu bar, I would like to click a link that says ingredients, that will take me to a page, that will list 50 items (configurable from user profile) which are said to be the main components of an instructable. Clicking on one of these items will take me to another page, which will show that item/component with instructables that have chosen to build with that item/component. So here there will be a list of recipes with said ingredient in. From this list I should be able to read up on all the 'bles marked as having the american vcr tag, which may or may not also have the european tag of vhs. Can I say it again? Let me try. The way to do it with drupal: So if each 'ble is marked with a tag (taxonomy = drupal) this tag is a new field that is attached to each instructable. Each 'ble can have many tags. So this tag can be seen as being a multiple field of parts or ingredients which may be added to an 'ble listing, if he author wanted to be thorough. Next, a 'view' could be created listing all the tags/ingredients/parts used. This view is the main content, and could show on a page a number of items. Each item comprises of a picture of a generic item, item description and item title. The picture can be 48x48pixels, thus allowing for a good pageful of items. Users could have options in their profile to show number of items per page, and to show icon size preference, and say have a small icon view with the 48px icon view, and a medium with 120px, and a large with 200px, maybe for each page of results. So the results page is different from the item/category page. On this item page as on the results page will be the previous and next links, plus also the usual panels that exist on the side and the footer, and of course the header. Essentially the content is what the view is. Clicking on one of these items, will take a user to a search page, listing all items tagged with that specific term, i.e. vhs or vcr or both (you could put a rule saying tag anything with a tag of vcr with the vhs tag, or you could keep them separate, and have both items in the 'view', adding that one is americanised and the other is anglocised with some kind of footnotes). This may open up instructables to be multilingual at some point in the future too, if that was ever something to look forward to the future for. Now, somehting irrelevant to the above idea from happening: if you think I raise a valid point, cool, I would like to be put forward for charity membership, and have myself seen as exempt from having to pay for pro membership. I do not expect this. IDEA* this is another great thing you can add to the site. If possible, tell me so - and then I can make an instructable based on doing charity work not necessary for any return favours, but as an altruistic form of behaviour, and gain credit towards another kind of mem'ship, maybe even community service. I do a lot of charity work, helping others in need, and for people who would like to give but haven't enough to support themselves, or believe that people in Africa or elsewhere have more of a need than themselves getting pro mem'ship, I think that allowing people to have the option may solve grey areas, for instance, where some people who do not fit the 'pro' mold could fit into. I love this site, and I love you guys and girls for doing such a fab job. I wish I was part of the team. Hal p.s. Pro Members should be able to change their nicknames, or have more than one that is hidden from others.

It is a JVC GR-AX280, it is old, the batteries arent discharged yet, however it uses small VHS tapes and those are expensive and old, and tend to not work as well as they should. The other thing is it still woks perfectly fine its just i want a DSLR and i thought mabey making a temporary one out of the lense and etc from it. I think my head is going to explode....minor UPDATE: tis my birthday

This week is just too much for me...first the laptop,  and now my wife gave me an early (by one day) birthday present.   An LED headlamp.  I mean, it isn't much, but she is starting to tune into that gifts for me should be "useful" (I didn't need last year's  entire collection of Star Trek movies on  VHS, etc).    Because it is useful and thought was taken into account to get it, it is one more precious thing happening this week..... And since it is,  I got to go out to a very small, but quite quaint, Italian style Café.  The food is always wonderful, and so I enjoyed a nice Almond crusted Trout meal.   Kind of tops off the week so far :-)

Is it possible to recharge old, long-dead, camcorder batteries? Answered

I am wondering of there is a method for revitalizing old camcorder batteries which refuse to charge. I know that certain camcorder battery chargers used to come with a "refresh" button. However, the chargers that came with my batteries lack this feature. I believe that most of the batteries are Ni-Cd's. However, one of them is lead-acid. The lead-acid battery is from a VERY old camera, one in which you placed the camera on your shoulder, and slung a VHS VCR from the other. When you were done recording, you would then take the VCR and plug it into the a matching TV tuner. This would charge the battery. Any ideas that would help me get some charge into these batteries would be appreciated. Thanks!

Like how could I use one if I would be able to get them out of the circuit? I heard they get programed to do something. How do i program one? Why do the circuit always so complicated?

(if the gear ratio is to high then the car wont accelerate fast enough to low then the car wont have a fast enough top end) so basicly im looking for that perfect med ground. if anyone here has had much experience with gears and help would be great thanks (PS the vehicle cant be any biger then a vhs case but can be as tall as i want it)

What items at an Ontario dollar store will get me 2 or even more SPDT switches? Answered

I'm working on a simple BEAM style robot to entertain my kittens and keep them from attacking each other, so after I have demolished a combo dvd/vhs player to which we had lost the remote (recycled for a reason) I found all needed motors (2 similar voltages) but am still lacking the sensors to give it enough 'brains' to navigate around the kitchen and not get cornered. If anyone has seen an item in the buck or 2, dollar giant, etc, stores that contains 2 or more SPDT switches (If its a dollar, i wouldn't expect greatest of quality) or any other nifty gadgets (bright led's, small voltage motors, etc), it would be a great hint for other bug-bot builders on a budget. I am out to search for such a device, even if I find SOMETHING thats useful in store before I receive an answer, I might just answer my own query as I'm sure someone out there has pondered the same stump, you all know you are a cheap recycling opportunist and instructabl-er at heart.
